# In Praise of Halt and Catch Fire (reflections after my 6th re-watch)

Spoiler Alert: This essay have some references to all four seasons, including the ending, so my apologies in advance!

For me, Halt and Catch Fire is the most remarkable television series ever made! That is a big statement, but after watching it six times, I still mean it. Few stories have made me feel so understood, or said so much about what really matters: people, relationships, friendship, life’s struggles, failure, and success (however we choose to define it). It is a brilliant reflection of how people truly behave in real life, teaching us a great deal about human nature, ourselves, and how to navigate family, friends, failure, and triumph.

I first discovered the show while its fourth and final season was airing. Since then, returning to it has become almost a ritual. The series is so layered, rich with symbolism, and full of hidden gems that every single time I watch it, I notice something I missed before: a small gesture, a line of dialogue, or a connection between moments that once seemed unrelated. Sometimes a character makes more sense to me simply because something in my own life has changed. That is why my strongest recommendation is to watch it more than once, and at different stages of your life. There is so much here to uncover, and what you recognize in it may change as you do.

It has made me smile and cry, sometimes within the same episode. I am continually amazed by the care in its writing, performances, and direction, as well as the incredible attention to detail and the patience with which its story unfolds. It is truly a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience that offers a depth I find missing in much of today’s television. These characters are difficult, contradictory, gifted, and vulnerable. I recognize something of myself in them, and something of the people around me.

My connection to the show is also deeply personal. I have spent the past 19 years developing various technologies, and the past five as the founder and CEO of a VC-backed robotics startup (which we started well before today's wave of excitement around robotics). From that perspective, I am continually struck by how accurately the writers captured the reality of startup life and the experience of trying to build something.

The personal drama. The excitement when something finally works. The disappointment when it does not. The burning ambition to keep going, and the constant feeling of standing on the edge of whatever comes next. The isolating difficulty of making others understand what you see, or why it matters so much to you (especially the unique weight that founders carry).

All of this rings completely true. I imagine many founders recognize these exact feelings, though you do not have to build a company to understand them. Anyone who has cared deeply about an idea, struggled with failure, or tried to hold a relationship together while pursuing something demanding can find themselves in this story. What amazes me is how extraordinary creators Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers were at distilling that entire experience into five central characters: Joe, Cameron, Gordon, Donna, and John Bosworth ("Boz"). Their ambitions draw them together, create opportunities, and sometimes hurt the very relationships that make their work possible.

Every season offers something fresh and distinct, anchored by how the characters change through their work, their friendships, their mistakes, and their losses. It can be hard to see the full picture on a first viewing, but everything comes together in Season 4 in what is, for me, the most beautiful ending in television. By then, we have spent enough time with these people to understand what it has cost them to become who they are. Their maturity feels earned after living through so many hardships, failures, and successes, both individually and together. You can truly feel what it took to survive that journey and who you might become after walking that path yourself. Above all, it becomes evident that there are no ultimate winners or losers in the game of life. We all go through similar struggles, and we should never despair, because we can always have a fresh start!

Some fans feel a bit sad that the show never achieved mass popularity, and its creators and cast certainly deserved a massive spotlight. Yet I would argue that this is precisely what makes the show so precious. Like any true hidden treasure of the world, it feels special to discover it for yourself and tell others where to look. And like all hidden treasures, it remained unspoiled by outside commercial pressures. I often wonder if the creators and writers could have preserved such rich character development and artistic storytelling if they had felt the pressure of mainstream popularity, forced to simply "feed the beast" (as I once read they call it at big studios like Disney) just to drive high profits. Perhaps it is for the best that it remains a hidden gem. Even so, following the community here and on Discord, it is heartening to see more people finding the show and forming that same deep attachment.

It is rare to find television of this caliber anymore, and I truly hope we keep seeing work with this much patience and humanity in the future. I especially hope to see more from its creators and head writers, Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers, and its phenomenal main cast: Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Mackenzie Davis, Kerry Bishé, and Toby Huss.

I have one dream as a fan: a massive gathering somewhere in the world for everyone who loves this show, bringing the fans together with the creators and the cast (much like the real-life gathering Mutiny organized for its users in the show!). I don't know if such an event exists (or if one already happened and I missed it), but if anyone is ever planning to organize something like that, please notify the community, and count me in. Perhaps that wish is simply part of what the series leaves us with: a desire to connect with people who have shared something meaningful.

For me, the emotional culmination of the entire series (in Season 4) comes near the end, when Joe MacMillan looks at Cameron Howe and says: "The thing that gets you to the thing. It was you. It was always you."

That moment, paired with Donna’s incredible final speech (which reflects on her own journey while delivering a profound message about failure, success, and the people who were part of it), still gives me goosebumps. It is a masterpiece of writing, and Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers nailed it completely. As someone who spends so much of his life thinking about what comes next, I find that ending deeply moving. It makes me think about the people beside me now, and what we might overlook while we are trying to get somewhere.

To the creators of the show and the whole cast: please continue to create and leave us with such great labors of love! This world needs much more of it. You inspired me (at least), and helped me in ways you cannot imagine. Please do not give up. Just like in your story, we can all have a fresh start! Do not despair if the show didn't reach the level of mainstream popularity you hoped for at the time, because it remains a precious gift to the world, waiting there for us to discover.

In the end, that is what Halt and Catch Fire teaches us about both technology and life. It is all about the people. People are the thing that gets us to the thing.

Watching for the first time -- did anyone think the quality declined significantly in Season 2? Did it recover?

I'm halfway through the second season and it's felt totally off from the start. I'm not talking about how the main cast is scattered and pursuing new things instead of all together at Cardiff; I usually like when shows reconfigure themselves like that!

I mean that the writers' and directors' understanding of each of the characters felt much more coherent and specific in the first season and it felt like the story was being driven by the characters and their respective natures, where this season the situations from which drama is derived feel consistently more contrived, with the characters just broadly reacting to them instead of driving them.

In general when I say the situations feel contrived I don't mean the big stuff like their business pursuits, though Cameron's slowness to see the potential of the chat feature does seem completely against her established philosophies and Donna's championing it feels arbitrary, with no attempt to tie it to her character or larger story as far as I can see. It is part of her larger story simply by virtue of being assigned to her, whereas in the first season everything about her job at TI and dealings with Cardiff was deeply entwined with her navigating her feelings of stifled potential and stagnancy in her marriage.

But every episode now is just full of little conflicts, misunderstandings etc that just feel like [thing that would be upsetting] with characters responding like [person who is upset]. It's like the writers are doing their best after only reading a one page plot summary of the first season, but it's many of the same people! Is this just a 'me' thing, or are there others who felt this way at this point and stuck with it? If it never gets better then I assume the only people subscribing to this sub are people who didn't have this experience, but I'm hoping there are people who can tell me they know what I'm talking about and they do bounce back. fingers crossed

Why is Bos acting like that? S3E4

I'm on my fifth rewatch and I've never been entirely able to put my finger on what's going on with Bos in S3E4. I'm curious what everyone thinks about two instances of how subdued or disenchanted Bos acts in two scenes in this episode.

The first is when he talks to Diane at the party he says he's lost his taste for all of it, despite seeming to enjoy himself before. Is it because he's done putting on a performance? Was it seeing Joe that tripped him up? Was it because Diane was talking about her ex husband and it brought up bad memories with his wife?

Later, I think I'm a little bit even more confused when Bos talks to Gordon. Gordon says he must like no longer being the big boss who is feared. Bos seems to take this personally, but why? Isn't that who he signed up to be when he decided to move to California at the end of season 2? He was disenchanted with the good ol' corporate boys. Why does this seem to sour Bos' mood to the point where everyone is asking him to play laser tag he gets angry? Was it because of the earlier conversation with Diane as well?

Hi everyone, I search the different physical releases for HACF just for fun. I learn a few things so I thought it would be cool to shared !

The most unexpected thing is the Japanese DVD releases—they are the only ones to have released all four seasons; I was convinced that only the first two had physical releases!

I was also convinced that there was no Blu-ray for Season 2, but it turns out Germany actually did get a Blu-ray release for it.

The rest are just local variations.

For those who are interested you have the reference to find each version when I found it.

PS : The country names are in French; I forgot to change them—sorry!

Let’s see who take the bait

I joined a dating app (not Communities) for 30 days with the profile name Cameron Howe and decided if anybody sends me a message from Joe McMillan they will 100% get a date, no matter what.

EDIT: Day 2. This is why I’m single. So far lots of “Hi Cameron”s. 1794 likes and nary a Joe.

EDIT: it’s been a week. My conclusion is that anyone in the “know” is so very cool that they are already in a relationship. Because NO ONE on this dating app has a clue.

I can't believe it took me 12 whole years to find this masterpiece. From start to finish, I absolutely loved it all.

Now I need to scratch that itch. Do you guys know of any other hidden gems like this?

I've watched Silicon Valley, devs, Mr. Robot, super pumped, tetris, it crowd.

I've got Betas and Valley of the Boom lined up.

Why 'Halt and Catch Fire' Left Me Feeling Both Full and Empty"

Why "Halt and Catch Fire" Left Me Feeling Both Full and Empty

This is my first review of anything, and English is not my first language. So please be patient!

No AI was harmed while writing this review (just slightly bruised by my appalling grammar errors).

(There is a TLDR for the lazy ones near the bottom)

SPOILER ALERT (I wonder if it’s really needed here)

1) It’s beautifully written

The character development was extraordinary, especially for Joe, Donna, and John—less so for Gordon. Being often at the center of some drama, there is little development in Cameron’s character. Her marriage was “like a dream” (her own words). She doesn’t know what she really wants most of the time, and when she does, it’s really a matter of time before something comes up and screws things up for her (and others). John encourages her not to give up on people; it’s not entirely her fault that she keeps ending up alone. This hints, perhaps, that her personal growth only truly begins after the end of the show—after all, she is the youngest of the leads. She is the wild “thing” that Joe is fatally attracted to. Tragically so, because in the end, he only succeeds in fooling himself by overlooking the deal-breaking incompatibilities between them. She, on the contrary, is well aware of them and ends things whenever they get too complicated or awkward.

Joe, in the beginning, is a deeply insecure man who has adopted this fearless business persona (for which Steve Jobs was obviously an inspiration) to prove his worth to himself and to his father. His development is mainly the acknowledgment, after some successes followed by phenomenal failures, that he does not need that mask to succeed, just valuable people and ideas. He wants to matter, to bring about change, but mostly to be right. To be able to tell people, “I told you so, didn’t I?”. He does concede defeat, but only when he is ready to spring in a different direction to achieve success. He is immortal as long as his will to matter is alive.

Donna’s character development seems initially like an afterthought, but it works wonderfully once she gets rid of her insecurities as well and accepts her being sometimes a worse person than she thought she was to fulfill her goals.

Gordon is the glue that keeps everything and everyone together; he’s a great father and friend but not so great a husband. He is very confident in the things he fully comprehends, but he is not a risk-taker, not as much as the others. Being the best at being a friend, his death hits everyone the hardest, and more so because it is not so utterly unexpected. He’s the only one whose destiny we get to see in full; he is the most accomplished of them all where it matters: as a father, friend, and companion. This is probably a consequence of knowing he has limited time, leaving him unbothered by anything beyond the things that matter.

John is as old-school as you can get, and yet capable of embracing innovation once his trust in the people driving it is established. He is confident as long as he is successful; then, needing to prove to himself and to Diane that he is still his own man, he makes a blunder that puts everyone in a difficult position. Fortunately for him, he’s so endearing and honest about owning it that everyone forgives him.

The four leads are special, or rather, exceptional people: Cameron is a genius coder, Gordon and Donna are hardware wizards, and Joe is a charismatic techno-salesman and fortune teller. Each has flaws that keep them real and also prevent them from reaching their goals too early, or at all.

2) The acting is wonderful

Superior even to the writing in quality, but slightly less important.

3) No filler episodes

No “skip forward” moments (on my first run at least).

4) This show captures the early IT era brilliantly, despite an ever-tightening budget.

TL;DR
No other show, and I’ve seen a few, left me so full and empty at the same time.

  • Full because there were no loose ends; everything ended in the most natural way, and no further knowledge of their lives was really needed.
  • Empty because when it ended, I lost some friends—people I cared for, admired, or at least understood.

I'm rewatching again and I realized in episode 1, they are using actual brand name cola, Dr. Pepper. Everything from then on out is Ranger soda. I guess someone must have put up the money for Dr. Pepper in episode 1 and didn't feel like it needed to continue.

Gordon has that look like he's listening when his brain is somewhere else

Post image
142 Upvotes

There's a thing Gordon does in conversations where he'll stare at whoever's talking and barely react, but you can tell his brain has already gone somewhere completely different. Then they finish talking and Gordon suddenly responds with something that proves he heard every word. It's especially funny in the early seasons when Joe and Cameron are talking at him and he's clearly processing about five other things at the same time.

What are everyone's feelings on Cam and Joe?

Personally, I was glad that they didn't end up together. I'm not a fan of rewarding adulterers. The Comdex thing when Cam cheated on Tom with Joe never sat well with me, so in S4 E9 when they break up I was actually happy.

If Tom was never in the picture I would have been fine with it. But once she married Tom I think Joe should have been off limits.

I once read Kerry wasn’t a good choice for playing Donna. This is like saying Jesus Christ wasn’t the right choice to play God’s son

Rewatching with my dad, who's new to the show and really loves it. What do you know, Donna sings this to Joanie while she's recovering from her abortion, right after Gordon's brother kicks him and the girls out of the house on their trip.

I've never had to jump up to do something in another room faster in my life. 😭
