General Discussion You may be eligible for Slovak CBD or SLA

Hi everyone, my name is Wendy, and I'm a mod over on r/SlovakCBD. Your group mod has kindly invited us to share our subreddit with you. Many of whom are eligible for citizenship in Slovakia are also eligible for citizenship in Hungary, and vice versa. And many descendants who were once not eligible for SK CBD due to the year of immigration or naturalization, may now be eligible under the newest MOI interpretation of the 2022 law. Under this new interpretation, those years are no longer relevant.

There is no language requirement with Slovak CBD or SLA.

We hope to see you over on r/SlovakCBD :-) !

Useful information Voting by mail in the Hungarian Parliamentary Elections

Hi everyone!

As you may have noticed, the delivery of postal voting packages began on March 18, and many of them have already reached your addresses.

The voting procedure is quite simple (as also explained step by step on the official website of the hungarian National Election Office: https://vtr.valasztas.hu/ogy2026/valasztopolgaroknak/levelszavazas?tab=hogyan-szavazhatok):

  1. The identification declaration must be carefully completed using data that matches your valid official identification document issued by the Hungarian authorities. Important: On the declaration, you must provide either your 11-digit personal identification number (whose middle digits also indicate your date of birth), or the number of a valid Hungarian identity card, passport, or driving licence. If none of these are available, you may provide the number of your certificate of naturalisation. It is also essential that you sign the declaration by hand.
  2. Fill out the ballot paper included in the postal voting package.
  3. Place the completed ballot paper into the inner (small) envelope and seal it.
  4. Place the sealed inner envelope together with the completed declaration into the return envelope, and seal it as well.
  5. You can return the envelope in the following ways:

By mail:

  • Using the return envelope provided in the postal voting package, sent to the National Election Office (free of charge from any country), or
  • By placing the return envelope into an additional outer envelope (not included in the package), sealing it, and sending it to a Hungarian diplomatic mission (address indicated on the envelope), usually for a fee.

In person or by proxy:

  • At any Hungarian diplomatic mission abroad, or
  • At any single-member constituency election office in Hungary.

Since postal votes may not reach the NVI (National Election Office) by April 12, I recommend sending your envelope to your nearest consulate or embassy (Which does come with the extra cost of sending the envelope like regular internal mail), especially if you live overseas:
https://vtr.valasztas.hu/ogy2026/valasztopolgaroknak/levelszavazas?tab=kulfoldi-atvevohelyek

Examples:

  • USA: Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C.
  • Canada: Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver
  • Brazil: Brasília, São Paulo
  • Australia: Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney

Here is also a more visual guide to the voting procedure (in Hungarian – you can enable automatic subtitles):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJVRr4WGqY4

Good luck!

P.S. You can check if your vote has arrived to the NVI in 2022 via this website, if you have an Ugyfelkapu+ or a DAP (Digitalis Allampolgarsagi Program) app: https://mo.hu/szuf_ugyleiras?id=00098d5e-4fae-444d-8cf1-19641030e739&_n=tajekoztatas_a_valasztasi_informatikai_rendszerben_nyilvantartott_adatokrol -You'll notice that your registration is valid until april 2032.

You'll also be able to check sometime in may if your vote in this year's election has reached the NVI.

Required records?

Sziasztok!

I’ve been collecting records for my simplified naturalization for a lil while now and have found a lot of what I need. However, there’s some missing information. I would be using my GG Grandfather’s line since that would likely be the easiest.

What I have of his:

• Possible birth certificate (GG Grandfather)
• Death certificate (mother’s name not listed)
• Naturalization papers

What I don’t have:

• His marriage certificate
• Ship Manifest

So, my question is, do I need the marriage certificate since his mother’s name isn’t listed on the death certificate? I haven’t seen anything else with his parents’ info listed. I’m worried that they wont accept my documents for that reason.

Filling out Verification of citizenship forms

Szia! I am applying for a verified citizenship at the Los Angeles consulate. They told me all the forms I needed to fill out, but they specifically mentioned that the forms need to be done in Hungarian.

How have people who done this successfully, who do not speak Hungarian filled out their forms? ChatGPT? Google translate? Did you have someone help you with your forms? I am curious how you navigated that

Do documents need embassy-certified translations, or is an authorized translator enough?

Hi everyone! Is it sufficient to have the required documents translated by an authorized translator, or must they be validated by the Hungarian embassy or forwarded by post to a translation office in Hungary? I have encountered different answers and opinions online and feel somewhat uncertain right now. We have an authorized Hungarian translator in our city, but he is not affiliated with the embassy or consulate. I'd appreciate every opinion and advice. Thank you!

How long does simplified naturalization usually take?

Would it be foolish to schedule my appointment today without first learning Hungarian? Will I have many months to prepare?

How Long After Choosing the Location Did You Receive a Date?

Hi everyone!
My husband’s simplified naturalization application was approved in early June.
He recently received an email asking where exactly in Budapest he would prefer to take his citizenship oath.
For those who have already been contacted with the same question, how many weeks did it take after replying to receive a confirmed date for the oath ceremony?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thank you!

Ancestor may have lost citizenship due to a 10-year absence, but his marriage register treats him as a citizen after he returned 11 years later

Hello! I am working on claiming Hungarian citizenship by descent. I started taking language lessons, but I hope to obtain citizenship through verification rather than simplified naturalization so I can relocate sooner. My ancestor first immigrated to the USA in 1902. He returned to the Austro-Hungarian Empire many times, but I am unsure if he returned during the first ten years after he left. I have submitted multiple requests to different archives and authorities to see whether they have any documentation of him returning before the 10-year clock ran out (or any other documentation that would reset the clock). However, I know for certain that he returned in 1912 when his wife passed away, but it was a few months after the 10-year clock ran out. His first wife immigrated to the USA shortly after my ancestor, but she returned to Billed, Romania, at an unknown date before 1912 and gave birth to another child there. I am unsure if my ancestor returned with her. I have located the child’s birth record and am waiting for the archive to provide a copy to see who reported the birth. He stayed for approximately a year and remarried before returning to the U.S. I have his marriage record, and it treats him as a citizen. Please correct me if I am wrong (this is just based on my internet research), but it seems that if a citizen married someone considered a foreigner in the Hungarian Empire, a Certificate of No Impediment was required. My ancestor does not have one for his second marriage, and his marriage record lists his residence in Billed. I also read that official Hungarian documents, like the marriage register treating him as a citizen, would take precedence over the 10-year absence (if he was indeed absent for 10 years). I am unsure whether this is true because I'm finding so much conflicting information. Does anyone here know whether this is true? I plan to meet with an immigration lawyer, but I'm waiting until I receive all the documents I ordered from the archives. Thank you in advance to anyone with insight!

Handwritten or typed honosítási kérelem?

I've come to the point where I should start filling out the Honosítási kérelem and the other docs (birth registration forms, marriage registration form, and SZIG forms). I've seen different and contradictory info online - some say it's ok to have it typed out on a computer, others say it's required to have it handwritten (specifically, all in capital letters?). I don't know how to approach this, and I wouldn't want this technicality to make any sort of difference.

How did you do it?

Certified vs. exemplified copies?

Apologies if this has already been answered, I did a search but didn't see anything - I am about to order a copy of a marriage record from the State of Pennsylvania and they offer the options for certified or exemplified copies. They state exemplified is necessary for international use like dual citizenship, but I wanted to see if this was necessary for the simplified naturalization process, or if a certified copy is sufficient. Thanks!

Any Advice on How to Get a Court Order to Amend an Ancestor's Birth Record?

Sziasztok! To make a long story short, I need to get my great-grandmother's birth certificate amended. For some reason on her birth record, her given name is wildly different than the name she went by her entire life (think like Mary vs Prudence). No idea why it's like that, but I of course need to get it changed. NJ DOH will not do it without a court order. I'm not sure how to go about that, I'd try to do it by myself but I went through hell in Maryland's legal system to obtain my grandmother's certificate and I'd rather just fork up the cash to legal professionals. Does anyone have advice or maybe has gone through a similar situation and have recommendations as to who I can turn to for help? Thank you in advance!

Translator Recommendations (not offi) from people who have completed the simplified process

Hey I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations for people who can do english to Hungarian translation services. My plan is to get the translations over certified at the actual interview. I got one quote from a woman in NYC that was absurdly high for 3 one page documents (over 200 USD). So if anyone has a better rec for someone who I can send the documents to digitally, that would be great. Thank you for your help!

However, one additional question, the embassy I was contacting with said that they accept documents if they are in English? So idk what that is about if anyone has any idea? Thank ya

Genealogy - help

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to trace and reconnect the branches of my family tree on my maternal grandfather’s side. I know that my grandfather was from Hungary, but unfortunately, his name is not listed on my mother’s birth certificate, which has made it difficult to trace this side of my family.
I’m looking for help from someone with experience in Hungarian genealogy, historical records, and family research who could help me piece together the missing information and hopefully identify my grandfather’s family and ancestors.

This is something that means a lot to me, and I would really appreciate any guidance, recommendations, or connections to someone who has the knowledge and experience to help bring this search to completion.

If you know a professional genealogist, a Hungarian family history researcher, or someone who has experience with cases like this, please get in touch or leave a comment.

Speak Hungarian app got an upgrade!

Hi all,

I've been building Speak Hungarian since February. It's an AI tutor that teaches Hungarian through short lessons. Until now it only worked as a Telegram bot, and many people gave up at "install Telegram first". So this week I moved everything to the web:

- Sign in with Google or email, answer one question about your level, and the first lesson starts right away.

- Answer by typing (there are buttons for á, é, ő, ű) or by speaking. The tutor corrects you, explains why and plays the correct pronunciation.

- If something is unclear, tap "Ask more".

- New words go into spaced repetition cards, and the Today page tells you what to review.

- If you close the tab mid-lesson, it picks up where you left off.

The first 5 lessons are free, with every feature and no card needed. After that it's 1 € a month.

Try it: https://www.pricajmadjarski.com/en/login?mode=register&utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=web_launch

I'm especially interested in where the tutor gets Hungarian wrong. Every lesson has a "Report a tutor mistake" button, and I read every report.

Has anyone heard back recently about Simplified Naturalization?

I applied in January and haven’t heard anything since. I’m wondering if anyone has heard back recently or if they have slowed down on approvals recently.

How good is good enough?

I'm stuck in the loop of learning the language and feeling that it's still not good enogh. The documents are (almost) ready, and the lineage package is as clear as it can be.

However, I simply don't know how much longer or harder to prepare for the interview. I'm at the point where I can communicate simply about all of my docs, I can explain the lineage, the papers, introduce myself, my family, my work, hobbies, some interests, you know, the regular stuff they tell you the topics usually are.

However, I most certainly cannot speak about, IDK, fixing broken washing machines, arts and crafts, music minutiae, and whatnot. You get the point, I think I'm conversational on the very basic levels, but there are so so so many topics that would completely stump me. I simply don't have the necessary vocabulary.

So my question for all of you who successfully passed the interview - how good is good enough? The "intermediate" label means very little. I'm also fully aware that the consul, at their discretion, can move the conversation in whichever direction, but does that realistically happen? Also, I understand they don't just let anyone pass, but there's got to be a cutoff point somewhere and I'm just asking if someone has managed to gauge where it is.

Thanks for any tips.

Hello all,

My grandfather was Hungarian, born 1933 in Pecs and immigrated to Canada in his early teens while his parents remained in Hungary. His father (my great grandfather) was born 1903 in Villany, Baranya.

Because of these circumstances, it is my understanding that I qualify for citizenship by blood (granted my ancestors were citizens) and I have started the process of obtaining the documents and starting conversations with the Hungarian consulate in Canada.

They directed me to their website which has the information needed, however at the bottom of the page there are links to download the Application form for a verification of citizenship and English language-aid version. For some reason I cannot access these documents, I’ve tried multiple browsers and devices but to no avail. In my correspondence with the consulate, they sent several documents so I might already have the Application form for a verification of citizenship but because they are in the native language, I am unsure.

The documents I have are:
- áp. kérelem
- háza. akvi-box nyilv. vétel
- Házasság hazai anyakönyvezése
- Szül. anyak
- szül-hez adatlap külföldön élõ nyilv.tart

Based on translating to English, my understanding is the only form I need to complete is áp. kérelem.

Does anyone have any experience completing this form and can help provide guidance on my application? I do not speak or read any Hungarian and I understand that the submitted documents must be in the official language.

Here is a link to the document

Update October 8, 2026
I joined a few Facebook groups and managed to get the English aid document. However, I am still having a lot of trouble figuring out how to fill in the information. Can anyone assist with this?

I also learned that my grandpa was a 2nd lieutenant during the Hungarian Revolution and had fled to Canada between 1956-1958.

Ukrainian to Hungarian Document Apostile translation for Hungarian Consulate abroad question (Canada/USA)

I have messaged the consulates I was looking to get my documents approved for the Hungarian Simplified Naturalization process. At the moment I am stuck at the step of translation. I believe the Treaty between Ukraine and Hungary on Legal Assistance in Civil Matters signed in 2001 allows me to submit the translations for use at a Hungarian consulate abroad in the USA or Canada.

For documents originating in Ukraine, is a translation of the apostille or further legalization of the original documents before being translated to Hungarian necessary?

Provider/ researcher

Hi all!

Considering starting the simplified naturalization process and starting to learn the language (I know it is difficult and will take some time) but want to make sure I meet all the other requirements

A few questions:

Context: my GGF (Moms paternal grandfather) came to the US in 1898 (as a very young child) according to census, my GGM (moms paternal grandmother) came to the US in 1911. In various censuses they list their birthplace as either Austria or Hungary. We know that they considered themselves ethnically Hungarian, my GGM only ever spoke Hungarian and my GGF last name was Cservenyak prior to changing it later in the US. They were also Cathloic

1) name change: my GGF changed his name at some point in the US. It looks like he changed it after serving in WW1. Is this a potential issue or will an affidavit suffice? I can’t seem to find any documents that list both names.

2) Hungarian docs: I understand we would need to find my GGFs or GGMs baptism/ birth certificate - are there providers/ researchers people would recommend? Do we also need to get copies of arrival/ naturalization docs etc?

Anything else that would be helpful to know?

Obtaining a national card In Hungary

Hello everyone, I am a refugee from Ukraine who received temporary protection in Hungary. I am currently officially unemployed. I recently decided to switch to a national card to get the opportunity to stay in Hungary for two years. In connection with which I apologize to those who are not indifferent who have gone through this stage of the story
