Experience Ghosts in Edinburgh

• Upvotes

I was fortunate enough to travel to Scotland when I was younger and my family decided to take the haunted tour through the old underground city and vaults. I remember vividly hearing footsteps that were off in the distance when no one was moving. I felt weird sensations as if someone was brushing past me. Also saw a handful of shadows and it wasn't caused by anyone on the tour. I definitely want to go back and see if I experience anything similar.

Has anyone ever done this tour in Edinburgh?

Experience Haunted House Story

I rented a house with my bf in 2011-2012 and I still think about it. I’ll list all the weird happenings in chronological order and lmk what you think.

  1. About a month after we moved in, we were watching TV in the living room and the power went out and then came back on. A few seconds later it happened again…and then again and again. We eventually realized it was alternating with the power in the kitchen two rooms over bc we would hear the TV make a noise when it would come back on and then we would hear the microwave make a noise when it would come back on. It would happen at alternating times. It lasted for maybe 30-45 seconds and stopped. We continued watching TV even though we thought that was very odd. About 23 minutes later (according to the time flashing on the oven), I got up from the couch and walked to the kitchen to get a drink or snack. I thought my boyfriend had gotten up and followed me bc I felt someone was behind me. I got to the kitchen, saw the oven clock blinking 00:23, and turned around expecting to see my bf but no one was there. It freaked me out bc I could’ve sworn he had followed me. As I was starting to feel panicky, all the lights in the whole house went out. I ran back into the living room and jumped on the couch with my bf. The lights stayed off for about 10-15 minutes. There were no storms or wind or anything going on this night by the way.

  2. I saw a partial indentation of a right hand print in the carpet in the halfway near our bedroom door upstairs. I thought it was odd so I bent down to see if it was similar in size as mine. I thought maybe I just didn’t remember putting my hand down. Well the fingers were about the same size as mine but there were splayed wider than mine naturally splayed out. It was a strange location. I was suspicious of my bf honestly.

  3. We got a Labrador puppy early on in this lease. When she was about 4 months old, she was laying near the couch with me. We were home alone. She starts growling and staring at the bottom of the stairs. She was very focused on one spot and would take a few steps forward growling and then walk back. I made her stop bc she was freaking me out but she kept staring. She eventually went back to napping but every time she would stir or readjust, she would immediately check the stairs.

  4. By this point, I’ve told my bf that it was freaky and scared me. He was a major skeptic and minimized everything. There would also be times of walk into a room and after I’d pass under a light fixture and have my back to it, it would dim and brighten. I’d turn around to see if it would do it again and it wouldn’t. Then I’d turn my back to it again and it would do it. It would never fallen when he was in the room. Well one night we are all in the living room and my bf gets up to walk to the kitchen. As soon as he’s gone, me and my puppy hear a noise close by that sounds like paper rattling in the wind. We both look around in the same direction at the same time and there’s nothing there.

  5. I’m about to vacuum one day and I go to grab the vacuum out of the coat closet in the living room near the stairs. Now the coat closet has a shelf high up towards the ceiling and then a closet bar for hangers under it. We didn’t have anything hanging in there and hadn’t put anything on the shelf, but we kept brooms, swiffer, vacuum, etc on the floor of the closet. So, I’m going to get the vacuum. I open the closet door and there’s a picture in mid air about chest level right above the vacuum, falling to the floor. It didn’t look right bc it was in mid air as soon as I opened the door. It was well below the shelf. The picture was of a black young girl and it looked like it may be from the 80s or 90s. The tenants who were in the house when we toured it were white.

  6. I’m at home one night by myself doing laundry. I get clothes out of the dryer and take them upstairs in a basket. The whole house is quiet. While I’m folding clothes in my bedroom, I hear the dryer (downstairs in the kitchen) come back on. This is the most scared I’ve been at this point. I grab a bat and go downstairs to investigate. I slowly make my way to the dryer, freaked out asf, and reach over to open the door and stop it. I look at the turn knob and it had moved into the next timer setting section from where I had set it previously. So if the knob had gotten stuck and continued to turn, still the question remains how did it trigger to start without someone hitting the button? Btw the kitchen had the creepiest vibes in the house. Like hair raising sometimes. If I ever went to the kitchen at night, I’d end up running back to the stairs.

  7. We’ve probably been there 5 months or so by now and my bf has invited several of his friends from high school over. He hasn’t seen them in years so I help him clean the whole house top to bottom. The whole house is freshly vacuumed. His friends arrive and they have plans to play video games in the living room. I have to run to the vet for my puppies vaccines. I come back and everyone is still downstairs playing. We are all downstairs till late at night. One of his friends starts falling asleep so he goes upstairs to the guest room (opposite side of hall than master bedroom). About 15 minutes later, I go too our bedroom and guess what’s in the floor of the hallway in the exact same spot! Except this time it’s a perfect full indentation of two hands in the freaky vacuumed carpet. The right fingers are in the same exact spot as before. I bend down and again they are similar in size to my hand but the fingers are more splayed out. My bf comes up after me and also sees them. He sees I’m freaked out but tries to play out of like I did it. But, his face looks like he’s just as baffled and trying not to get weirded out by it.

  8. The lights still do the weird dimming thing occasionally. They did it this particular night while I was getting ready for bed. I layed down and had my eyes closed. I felt like someone had entered the room and I heard a light footstep on the carpet. I looked to see if my bf had come in and no one was there.

  9. my bfs best friend starts with us for a few months while he’s in between rentals. He randomly one night says “yall know y’all’s house is haunted right?” My bf just looks at him and says nothing. I ask what makes him say that and he said “I was just watching something spooky and felt creeped tf out. I’m just playing”

  10. After said friend has moved out, me and my bf were standing in the kitchen. The counter was L shaped and from right to left has a dishwasher, sink, microwave in corner, and then oven on the short side of the L. The dishwasher was blinking PF (power failure) when we walked into the kitchen which was not uncommon. While we are standing in the kitchen, the light above the sink goes off. We flip the switch in and off several times and it’s doesn’t come back on. Then the microwave makes the noise of coming back on after power has been off to it (it would make this noise when you plugged it in also). We look at each other like that’s weird. Then the light above the oven turns off and comes back on. We were like wtf. The light over the sink worked fine the next morning.

I once had my mom and brother sleep in a pull out sofa in the living room and they both had trouble sleeping. My mom was freaked out and said she kept looking towards the kitchen. She said if my brother hasn’t been there with her she would have been framed or enough to leave. My brother also said it was creepy. One of my friends also stayed on the sofa bed and found it creepy.

I got used to the creepy heavy feeling and after we moved, it was such a relief to not feel it. Several years later after not living in that house for 4 years, I went travel nursing. I was working in a part of a hospital that was originally built in 1850s. I had stayed over until 11pm bc I had come in late that morning for a doctors appt. I didn’t know when I got in the elevator that you had to use your badge to make it work after hours. So I got out and went to take the stairs. I entered the stairwell, made it up two stairs before I froze in mid motion. I was completely overcome with that heavy creepy feeling that I remembered from my creepy house. I turned around and ran out of the stairwell as fast as I could. My heart was racing as I caught my breath on the outside of the stairwell door. I later heard that the stairwells in that section of the hospital are haunted. Supposedly ppl saw apparitions of patients in them. Supposedly patients would also report a nurse wearing all white and an old fashioned nursing cap coming into their room at night. There was also a door that would shut by itself. Even when propped open with a trashcan, it supposedly slammed and the trashcan was knocked over. I never witnessed any of those, it was just stories from other nurses.

Experience Lord Baltimore Hotel Experience

I stayed in the Lord Baltimore Hotel for a couple of nights this week. I heard the rumors the hotel was haunted, especially the 19th floor, but I was on the 18th floor and didn’t feel anything sinister, so I didn’t really think much about it.

However, last night, I had an extremely vivid dream (which I wasn’t sure was a dream until later) that someone was sitting on my legs on the bed while I was lying there sleeping. I think it was a woman but I didn’t see her beyond knowing and feeling she was on my legs. I had to yell at her to stop and to get off me, but in my dream, I kept having to yell “stop” at the top of my lungs, but after that first time, it was less “stop sitting on my legs” and more that I knew that to get her to stop bothering me, I had to yell stop and that would get the ghost to go away.

This morning, I asked my roommate if she heard me yelling in the night. She said no, but that she’s a really deep sleeper. It felt so real but also like the entire thing occurred in a weird dream/ghost realm.

Has anything like this happened to anyone else, especially at the Lord Baltimore? I’ve now read about the resident ghosts, but can’t connect this experience to anyone in particular.

Experience Toddlers and ghosts

Hi Reddit community!

My 3 year old son Hugo has always been very accurate with picking up on thoughts. I won't go in to specifics, but I am usually based in hard evidence and the amount of times he has specified exact thoughts/numbers has been enough to convince me something is happening beyond what current science on consciousness can explain.

Anyway, onto the insane day I had. I work at home alone some days. And on this particular day, I kept having really weird experiences like my moisturiser being flung off the shelf, a lid being pushed off a glass container, headphones moving on their own etc. I wasn't super creeped out, just thought maybe I was being overdramatic and things do fall.

After I picked my son up from daycare however, he finished brushing his teeth and just turns to the shower and says matter-of-factly 'Look mummy, there's a ghost in the shower' then proceeds to walk out of the bathroom like he had just pointed out a cat or something.

Has anyone else had experiences like this? I'm a bit dumbfounded and don't know what to think.

I tried to get more information on the ghost and he said it was a boy with brown hair, but wouldn't say anything else.

So in 3rd grade I was sitting on the floor and my teacher was reading to us a chapter of a long book and then my friend was tearing up claiming she saw a eye and I said "lies" and looked at the door and saw nothing and I looked away for 3 seconds and looked a second time and I saw a pointy shadow figure hand wave one time and I said "did you see that?" And my friends said "yes I saw it" then after that we went back to our seats and I saw my other friend coming back witha scratch but nobody or him scratched his leg so I went to the restroom and used it fast and I was scared badly that I didnt wash my hands.

The building I bought is haunted!

So I bought a four storey building with nine apartments in peshawar Pakistan for rental value. And apparently the big apartment of 5 rooms is haunted. The first tenants spent about 7 to 8 months and then started complaining about strange things like money and jewelery went missing, and at the end things started to get on fire, like clothes in box, and bed sponge etc. I didn't believe them and they left. Now new tenants moved in and it's not even been like 15 days and he complained about his wife getting slapped on the backside of the neck, but when she looked behind there was no one. And says that now she is ill too after that incident and is very scared, so they are also moving out. What am I supposed to do now? Currently it's only limited to this one apartment on the second floor, what if it spreads to the other flats? That's gonna be costly to me. Not only will I lose rental value but no one's gonna buy it if I decide to sell it. Any suggestions, recommendations?

Lived in a haunted house for 20 years.

I have had many experiences over those years I could write about. Obviously not all at one time. The experiences of explain more as cycles or phases. Maybe they are all connected maybe they aren’t. I’m far from an expert but I’m happy to answer questions or break down specific experiences.

Started when I lived on my own with noises then voices then apparitions.

A trip to St Augustine had something I believe follow us back

My son saw apparitions in his room at night right after the death of his grandfather

We had a series of regular noises in the home at the exact same time for many months

During the full solar eclipse an apparition appeared as a young boy and a dog walking beside my younger son in a picture

Then poltergeist like activity ramped up the last couple of years that actually made us decide it was time to move.

So for information reasons I lived on a large tract of family land and was always told their was indigenous burial ground there and artifacts found but no historical records to back it up. On the far side of the family land is a Methodist church cemetery. A large area where quartz stone is on top of the ground. I’ve heard that could conduct some residual energy.

Also maybe looking for help to explain the later experience and how to prevent further issues at our new house

Haunted Public Restroom?

This is quite a strange random story and possibly easily explained but it intrigued me and even made me laugh a little bit at the time. I was on vacation this week with my family in a small town near the sea. There's a playpark near to where we were staying that beach goers and dog walkers use and it has a public restroom next to it. My daughter wanted to go to the playpark one afternoon so myself and my wife walked with her to it. After 10 minutes or so I needed to use the restroom so I excused myself and walked the short distance across the car park. The restroom was empty so I did what I needed to do and went to wash my hands. As I finished washing them the hand dryer on the wall about 10 foot away from me came on by itself for a few seconds then stopped again. I froze for a minute and thought that's a bit odd. Then it came on again briefly and off again. After a slight pause it came on again for a bit longer then off again. I moved closer to it and said out loud for some reason 'can I use the dryer now please?' I waited and it didn't come on. So I dried my hands. I stepped back after it had stopped when I was using it and it came on again. I got my phone out of my pocket and thought I have to film this! But then another person came in to use the restroom and it stopped immediately. I waited for a while but it didn't come back on. I didn't really want to hang around in a public convenience with my phone out while someone else was there so I left. A weird experience and I left me thinking what the hell is going on here? Is it a short circuit that keeps it activating by itself? It's one of those with no button to activate it manually but comes on automatically when you put your hands under it so I guess it has a motion sensor? I found it quite funny and left the restroom laughing to myself and shaking my head. A haunted restroom with a ghost that washes its hands... Probably not but pretty funny nonetheless. As an update I went back the next day and stood next to the washbasins to see if it would come on again and it didn't. Thanks for reading and if any electricians can advise if it's possible for hand dryers to come on by themselves then I would be grateful!

Haunting Creepy & Chilling real horror story from my life.

I am not someone who gets scared of ghosts or anything. But what happened that night was unexplainable. Even till today, I don’t know what was it? And How it makes sense?

I live in the UK alone in an apartment. Jumping to the story directly. So, one night, I was on a call with my friend , which I usually do before sleeping. SHe is not from the UK by the way. Well, it was a normal night as every nights. I was on a call with her for about more than an hour. Because I was talking by laying on my bed on a phone’s speaker because I never talk sticking the phone with my ear. That’s how I am anyway.

Because I was lying on bed, I was slowly falling sleep. But I was not totally asleep. How I know I was not in a sleep? Because I was responding to what she was asking me on call. You know it’s that situation where you are half sleep and half awake. Yeah, exactly like that.

My room was on first floor near the staircase. And there were two more rooms on first floor. One in my left side and other on my right side of the room. Only two rooms’ door located exactly near the staircase end. And one room was mine. The third room was at the other side of the staircase. And because in the UK, rooms are usually made of wood, you can hear the foot steps when someone go to washroom or kitchen or someone walking on the staircase. You can literally hear the sound as well as can feel the foot steps if you are lying on bed.

Anyway, coming to that night. I was half sleep and half awake. Let me clear one thing before you guys make any assumptions. I was not fully sleeping.

Then, I heard that the guy from the third room, he opened his gate. How I know it? As I told, you can hear the sound. And it usually go down to the kitchen for smoking. It usual.

So, he opened his gate, walked the corridor, went near the staircase and instead of going down (which he supposed to do), he just turned towards my room. When I didn’t heard the foot steps on staircase and felt that he just turned towards my room, I was confused and upset, thinking why is he turning towards my room?

To inform everyone, my door was locked. So as everyone will expect, i was expecting that maybe he needs something and I was waiting him to knock the door. But surprisingly, he didn’t knocked the door. I felt, he just came through the locked door. Which was unbelievable for me. I was shocked and scared. I didn’t know how to react.

He came inside my room, walked all the way from my right side to my bed. And he slipped inside my blanket from bed-head side. I was so scared and frightened that I couldn’t comprehend what is happening. When he was inside my blanket. I was trying to shout at him that “how dare he can just enter my room like this and come on my bed”? This is unacceptable.

No matter how hard, I tried, I couldn’t move my body. Even my hand or anything. I was like froze. I know there’s a term for this, it’s called “Sleep paralysis”. But the surprising part is that it never ever happened to me before or even after that night in my life, till today. Any how I tried to move my left hand to touch him. I was only being able to touch his fingers. And believe me, I literally touched someone’s finger. I know how it feels. That touch was so real that I can never forget it.

The moment, I touched his fingers, everything came to normal. I woke up with frightened and heavy breathing and touched my bed, there was no one. Then I turned my phone’s flashlight and saw the door. It was still locked.

And now, I was sweating with a heavy breath and scare. I don’t know what was that. But then it never happened to me again. And one more thing, my friend was still on call with me. It took me some time to process everything. Later, I slept.

P. S: Share your opinion.

My family's "Shadow man"

on my mother's side of my family me, my brother, my mother, all my aunts on her side, and my grandmother all talk about seeing a shadow man in the corner of our eye for a spit second then he's gone. I haven't seen him since about 2024 during October my family thinks it has something to do with the urn my grandmother has brought with her from house to house for decades since she was given it by her mother and we don't know whose ashes they are. Back when she was a kid my mother would see him in my grandmothers room back when they lived in a trailer park and always felt unwell and scared in there

I can still vividly remember how he looked tall in a suit with a tail coat big hat and broad shoulders

every time I bring him up we all mainly remember his hat since it kinda had the same silhouette as Abraham Lincoln's hat if that makes sense I've never felt afraid of him though ( sorry if this has bad grammar I'm just dumb )

Edit: the ashes are mixed with the cement of the urn :/

Encounter One of the Scariest things I’ve experienced that I still can’t explain HOW it happened 😱

I decided last week to share a little bit about my family’s history and the Demonic Presence it brought forth. One certain situation stands out so prevalently that I must share. It was 1985 we had already been knee deep into trusting the Ouija Board Entity that had come through and was “Guiding" us through damn near every decision we made. There was a friend who started to come around, little tiny girl about 4’11 90 lbs soaking wet, she talked with an accent because she wasn’t born here, so some of us had a hard time understanding what she said at first. She started coming with my cousin everytime they would ditch school and come to my house to hang out. She was quiet but nice but she always was saying things like “We were lying, the Ouija board isn’t real, we were pushing the planchette etc..” One day in early December they all came over and once again she’s talking shit to us as we are using the board and the board starts to spell out her name over and over again. Then it starts to spell DIE DIE over and over again, now is being to good little Catholic girls we were always kept a Rosary right next to the board every time we used it just in case. Well obviously this thing is spelling her name and Die so we laid the Rosary on the board , and I Promise you on God the Planchette went flying straight across the room directly at the girls head, even turned as she went to leave the room, we ALL ran like Forest Gump straight outside into the snow no shoes no coats NOTHING!!! . My Grandfather was home with us but had no clue whatsoever what we were doing (His Mother was the Psychic Medium) I talked about in my first story, so he didn’t like anything to do with Witchcraft as he called it. He’s yelling at me to get our butts inside right now, it’s freezing and snowing etc..BUT he has no idea what just happened in my room he was to busy watching was on his War pictures as he called them. We came in and I’m literally petrified to tell him that I’m to afraid to go to my room (4 girls are with me too) so I begged him to go open my bedroom door, I had no choice but to tell him just a little bit of why we were afraid 😳. He did and we followed and what we seen till this day I will NEVER forget, when he opened my door the Ouija Board was standing up on my bed and the planchette was standing up right next to it. I Promise you it was that moment when we realized that whatever we released was Strong and Evil. The next week became pure hell for the friend. My other friends too her to a local church because after that day she was making strange noises, her eyes looked weird. She was scratching herself badly too. I didn’t go to the church with them I had to go to a Doctor appointment with my Mom, but I’ll never forget what they told me happened. They said they took her in and she was growling as they were walking her down the hallway towards the alter to talk to the Priest that was up at the front, then she started to jerk her body and scream. They had said the Priest told them to get out they were playing games, the girl them took off her clothes and ran outside into the street ( it was snowing that day) the Priest called the Police and she got arrested. They had her in the hospital under psych evaluation for about a week. Her parents never allowed us to talk to her again after that , I’m not sure what she told them happened and why her parents hated us so much? Yes I do, Because my DUMB ASS had the Ouija Board there and even though I didn’t tell her to say the things she said to it to anger it, I still had it. I Thank God everyday that I was able to get away from it and never allow my children to be influenced by it. There are so many more Evil twisted things I went through before I finally broke FREE.. I’m friends with that girl on social media and I’ve never had to nerve to bring it up. I’ve thought for years to share my experiences to finally break mentally free from what I went through, Thank you Reddit for listening 🫶🏼

Haunting I Was Driving on an Empty Road at 2 AM When I Saw Someone Standing in the Dark

I was coming back from a city outside my town a little after 2 AM when I saw someone standing on the side of the road.

I remember the time because I checked my dashboard right after I passed him. It was 2:07 AM.

I had gone out that evening to meet an old friend. We ended up talking longer than I expected, and by the time I finally left, most of the shops along the main road were already closed. I was tired and just wanted to get home, so I decided to take the old road instead of going all the way around through the highway.

I'd driven that route a few times before, but never that late at night.

For the first twenty minutes, everything was normal. There were a few trucks near the main road, but once I passed the last petrol station, the traffic disappeared. There were fields on both sides, a few scattered trees, and no streetlights. My headlights were the only thing lighting up the road ahead.

I had the radio on, but the signal kept cutting out, so I turned it off. After that, the only sounds were the engine and the tires on the road.

That's when I noticed the man.

He was standing on the left side of the road, maybe ten or fifteen feet from the edge. He was wearing dark clothes, and his head was slightly lowered. At first, I thought he was waiting for someone or maybe his car had broken down nearby.

I slowed down a little as I approached him.

There was no car parked nearby. No motorcycle, no phone light, nothing. Just him standing there in the dark.

I glanced at him as I passed, expecting him to look up or wave at me.

He didn't move.

I kept driving.

For some reason, I checked my rearview mirror a few seconds later. I could still see him in the distance, standing in exactly the same spot. Then the road curved, and he disappeared behind the trees.

I told myself it was none of my business. Maybe he lived nearby. Maybe he was waiting for someone who hadn't arrived yet.

Still, something about the way he stood there bothered me.

A few minutes later, I came across a small side road that connected to the main one. I remember thinking I was getting close to the next village when I noticed a figure standing near the bend.

My first thought was that it was another person.

Then I got closer.

It was the same man.

I recognized the clothes immediately. Same dark jacket, same trousers, same lowered head.

I actually lifted my foot off the accelerator without realizing it.

There was no way he could have reached that spot before me. I'd been driving at a steady speed, and the road between those two points was mostly open fields. Even if there was some shortcut I didn't know about, he would have needed to run, and I hadn't seen any movement in my mirrors.

I didn't stop to investigate. I pressed the accelerator and drove past him.

This time, I looked at him for a little longer.

His face was turned toward the road, but I couldn't make out any features. The headlights passed over him, and for a split second, I thought he was looking directly at me.

Then he was behind me again.

I locked the doors.

I know that sounds like an obvious thing to do, but I hadn't even thought about locking them the first time. My hands were starting to feel cold, and I kept checking the mirrors even though I knew I shouldn't.

I called my friend because I didn't want to be alone with my thoughts anymore. He answered after several rings, sounding half asleep.

I told him what had happened.

He laughed at first and asked if I'd been watching too many horror movies. I probably would have laughed too if someone had told me the same thing.

Then I told him I'd seen the same man twice, miles apart, on a road with almost no traffic.

My friend stopped laughing.

He asked me where I was and told me to stay on the main road. I said I was already doing that, but he made me promise not to take any more shortcuts. We stayed on the phone for a few minutes until the signal started breaking up.

Before the call dropped, he said something that I still remember.

"If you see him again, don't stop. Just keep driving."

I told him I wasn't planning to.

The call ended.

I put the phone in the passenger seat and concentrated on the road. I was beginning to feel embarrassed about how frightened I'd become. There was probably a normal explanation for everything. Maybe the man had a motorcycle parked somewhere out of sight. Maybe I'd mistaken someone else for him the second time.

I was trying to convince myself of that when I saw a pair of headlights in my rearview mirror.

A car was coming up behind me.

At first, I felt relieved. Seeing another vehicle on that empty road made me feel less alone. It was an old white sedan, and it seemed to be traveling at roughly the same speed as me.

I moved slightly to the left to give it room to pass.

It didn't.

I slowed down a little.

The car slowed down too.

I sped up again, telling myself the driver probably wasn't in a hurry. But after another minute, the distance between us remained almost exactly the same.

I couldn't see the driver's face because the headlights were too bright.

Then I noticed something that made my stomach tighten.

The car's headlights were illuminating the road behind me, but I couldn't see its front grille or even the outline of its hood properly. It was as if the lights were floating in the darkness.

I blinked and looked again.

It was an ordinary car. I could see the roof and windshield now.

I was tired. That was all.

I decided to stop at the next populated area and get something to drink. I didn't want to admit it, but I needed a few minutes to calm down.

A couple of minutes later, I saw a small roadside shop ahead. It was closed, but there was enough space beside it to pull over.

I slowed down, switched on my indicator, and turned into the gravel area.

The white car continued past me.

I watched its taillights disappear down the road and felt stupid for being so nervous. I got out, stretched my legs, and walked around the car. The night was completely quiet. Somewhere in the distance, I could hear dogs barking.

I checked my tires even though I had no reason to think anything was wrong.

Then I heard a sound from the other side of the shop.

Footsteps.

Slow, steady footsteps on gravel.

I stood still and listened.

They stopped.

I called out, asking if anyone was there.

Nobody answered.

I got back into my car, locked the doors, and started the engine. I didn't even bother checking my phone. I just wanted to get moving.

As I pulled back onto the road, my headlights swept across the shop's front wall.

For one brief moment, I saw a person standing beside the building.

Dark jacket. Dark trousers. Head lowered.

I nearly hit the curb.

I looked in the side mirror, but by the time I corrected the car, the shop was already behind me.

I didn't stop.

I drove faster than I should have, gripping the steering wheel so tightly that my fingers started to hurt. I kept expecting to see the white car again, but the road behind me remained empty.

After about fifteen minutes, I reached a small village. A few houses had lights on, and there was a security guard sitting outside a building near the entrance. Seeing other people around made me feel a little better.

I pulled over near him and got out.

He looked annoyed at first, probably wondering why a stranger was stopping in the middle of the night. I asked him if there was another road leading to my town because I didn't want to continue on the empty stretch I'd just driven through.

He pointed toward the main road and said that was the quickest route.

Then he asked why I looked so shaken.

I hesitated before telling him about the man.

I expected him to laugh, just like my friend had. Instead, he asked me what the man was wearing.

I described the dark jacket and trousers.

The guard looked toward the road I'd come from.

"Did he try to stop your car?" he asked.

"No. He just stood there."

"Did you stop anywhere?"

I told him about the closed shop.

He went quiet for a moment, then told me to stay on the main road and not take the old route again at night.

I asked him if he knew the man.

He shook his head.

"People sometimes walk around here at night," he said. "You never know who's out there."

It wasn't much of an explanation, but I didn't press him. I thanked him, got back into my car, and followed the main road home.

I didn't see anyone else that night.

When I finally reached home, it was almost 3:30 AM. I parked inside the gate, went straight to my room, and tried to sleep. I kept replaying everything in my head, especially the way the man had appeared in two different places without any obvious explanation.

By morning, I was already coming up with reasons why it might have happened.

I could have confused two different people. The man at the shop might have been someone else entirely. The car behind me could have belonged to a driver who simply didn't want to pass on a narrow road.

None of those explanations was impossible.

A few days later, I went to visit the same friend again. I told him I'd made it home safely and that the whole thing was probably nothing.

He asked me to send him the route I'd taken.

I did.

He called me a few minutes later.

"Did you say the shop was beside the old road, just before the village?" he asked.

I said yes.

He told me he'd asked his uncle about that road because his uncle used to work in the area. Apparently, there had been an accident near that stretch several years earlier. A man had been hit by a vehicle while standing near the roadside at night.

I asked him if he knew what the man had been wearing.

He said he didn't know, and neither did his uncle remember any details about the clothes.

That was the end of the conversation. We didn't have any proof that the accident had anything to do with what I'd seen, and I didn't want to turn a frightening night into some story about ghosts.

I still drive at night when I need to. I just don't use that road anymore.

The part I can't explain isn't that I saw a man standing in the dark. People walk along roads at night. Strange things happen, especially in places where there are no streetlights.

It's the second time I saw him.

The first spot was miles behind me, and there was no obvious way for him to have reached the next one before I did.

Maybe I got the distance wrong. Maybe I was more tired than I realized.

I honestly don't know.

But there's one thing I haven't told my friend, because I know how it sounds.

When I was getting ready to leave that roadside shop, I checked the back seat before starting the car. I always do that out of habit.

It was empty.

I remember it clearly because I had switched on the interior light and looked directly at the seat.

When I got home, though, there was a muddy handprint on the inside of my rear passenger window.

It was low down, near the seat.

I hadn't noticed it during the drive.

I cleaned it off the next morning and never took a picture of it. I wish I had, because sometimes I wonder whether it was really there or whether my memory has changed that detail over time.

I haven't seen the man again.

But whenever I'm driving on an empty road late at night, I check the rearview mirror a little more often than I used to.

And I never stop just because I see someone standing in the dark.

Discussion We heard a blood-curdling scream inside an old school in Doncaster. The EVP recording still gives me chills

Around 15 years ago, when I was dating a girl, I had an experience that I still think about to this day.

Her mum was the caretaker of a school in Doncaster that had apparently once been an old nunnery. Her family were massively into the paranormal and ghost hunting, and we'd been on quite a few investigations together.

One night, her mum decided to take a group of us around the school because she'd experienced some strange things there herself.

There were five of us. We took an EVP recorder, went inside at around 11 pm and locked the doors behind us.

Initially, everything felt eerie, but nothing particularly unusual happened. We walked around for about 30 minutes, checking different rooms and corridors.

Then we headed down one particular corridor. There was a set of doors at the far end, with the female toilets off to the right.

As we approached the end, her mum suddenly noticed that the outside gates were open.

This was strange because she always made sure they were locked.

We checked the doors throughout the building. Everything was locked.

Then, as soon as we'd finished checking, three things happened almost simultaneously.

The outside security lights came on.

The lights inside the toilets switched on.

And then we heard it.

A blood-curdling, female-sounding scream coming from the toilets.

I'm not talking about a little noise or something you could easily mistake for the wind. It was a scream that made every single one of us lose our minds.

We all started screaming over each other. Yes, including me!

We didn't investigate. We didn't try to be brave. We got the hell out of that school, locked the doors behind us and went home.

But here's where things get really strange.

When we got back, we decided to listen to the EVP recording.

We were absolutely stunned.

On the recording, just after her mum says, "Why are the gates open?", there's what sounds like a man's voice quietly saying:

"Wait..."

About five seconds later, the scream happens.

Immediately afterwards, you can hear all five of us screaming in absolute terror.

What makes this even stranger is that I was the only man in the group that night, and I was nowhere near the EVP recorder when that voice was captured.

I've tried to make sense of what happened over the years. Could there have been a perfectly rational explanation? Absolutely. Could the voice have been interference, or something we simply didn't notice at the time? Possibly.

But the timing of that voice, followed by the scream we all heard in person, is what gets me.

I genuinely didn't sleep properly for a week afterwards, and even now, roughly 15 years later, the memory still gives me chills.

I've uploaded the audio recording for anyone who wants to listen. I'd genuinely love to hear what people think.

Can anyone make out the voice saying "wait"? Does the scream sound human, or could there be another explanation?

I'm not claiming we definitely encountered a ghost. I just know what happened that night, what we heard, and what was captured on that recording.

And honestly, I've never forgotten it.

Demonic orb??

To begin this story I think I need to set up a little bit of context. I am a 24 y/o female who has experienced many paranormal experiences for as long as I can remember. I have memories of seeing a door handle twist and then the door opening at the age of 3 at my great grandmas home. I’ve also seen black shadows in her basement, little girl figures who I played with in her spare bedrooms, and a strong feeling of being watched while we sat on the couch, watching Judge Judy or Wheel of Fortune. When I was a baby, my mom said she had heard and witnessed me interacting with my deceased older brother through a baby monitor even though nobody else was around/in my nursery. There was even one vivid memory of seeing a dark shadow figure with bright red eyes inches away from my face staring at me as I tried to fall asleep when I was around the age of 5-6.

My whole life has consisted of seeing/sensing paranormal activity but as I’ve gotten older, the vividness has faded. I still sense and see spirits. They are usually always in shadow form. When I am able to sense spirits I can feel emotions, gender, and where they may be located in a room, but cannot always see them. I frequently have the feeling of being watched and knowing that something is off in a room I’ve just walked into. I’ve even felt a ghost cat brush up against me a few times while I was doing dishes. But with that all being said, this is the scariest encounter I have had with the paranormal.

My boyfriend (23) and I (at the time 22) were sitting in our single bedroom apartment living room around 10 PM talking about life and reminiscing on our past while watching a movie. While we were in mid conversation, I had noticed a small light in the right hand corner of our ceiling which caused me to stop mid sentence. At this time, we were used to seeing the occasional car headlight stream across our ceiling as we had been living there for about 3 years. I’m still not sure what had caught my attention initially but I do know that what I was seeing wasn’t a casual car headlight stream. My boyfriend had also gone still and silent at the same time I noticed this orb. We both froze and watched as it floated slowly, from the right side of our living room all the way to the left and into the apartment next to us. It’s important to note that around this same time, I had been questioning my christian religion and began experimenting. I just purchased a set of tarot cards that gave me an extremely realistic and scary prediction regarding my future. I was actively trying to contact the spirit realm to help guide me as I knew I had some sort of connection with them/their world.

Going back, as soon as I saw the orb, I felt instant despair that I have never experienced in my life. I also began uncontrollably shaking. All I remember is having an unexplainable sadness and began to sob like I have never cried before. After we both watched it float into the apartment next to us, we sat, not saying a word to each other. Just staring at the wall for a solid 2 minutes before my partner asked, “Did you just see that?” Which I had replied, “Don’t talk about it. It’s time to go to bed.” I don’t know why I knew that’s what I needed to say at the time, but I knew we absolutely could not speak about what we just saw and we needed to pretend like we didn’t see anything at all.

We both stood up and went straight into our bedroom where we both, again, sat in silence for multiple minutes before he began questioning me about what we both saw. For more context, I had told my boyfriend about my interactions with the paranormal and how I could see shadow figures/sense when something or someone was in the same room as I was. After multiple attempts of him asking me about the orb, he ran to the bathroom and began to vomit.

The next day we sat down and when I was comfortable enough, we talked about what we had seen. He began to ask me, “What the fuck was that?” And I told him exactly what I had felt. I told him that whatever that red orb was, it was evil and I had felt a sadness that I have never felt before. I explained that was why I was so adamant about not speaking about what we had seen the previous night. He began to tell me that whatever he saw was completely different and he felt sick to his stomach instead of the dread that I sensed. He explained that he saw a bright white/blue light where I had clearly seen a red. Shortly after our conversation, I purchased holy oil and blessed every door and window in the shape of the cross while reciting Psalm 91. Since then, we have moved out of that apartment but we did not sense anything after while we still lived there.

Even though it is a year later, no matter how many times we tell this story, we both ask each other “What the fuck did we see that night.” Even if people don’t believe us, we both know what we saw and felt. We knew what car lights looked like as they flashed across our ceiling from the street below and this was not car headlights.

My question is, what did we actually see? I felt darkness and despair and in my gut, think it may have been something demonic but I have no way to say for sure. My second question is, has anyone else seen something similar that has made them feel a similar way?

Basements

This is a true story! I grew up in a haunted house. There was a man who lived across the street from us and I think he was psychic. He told us that our whole neighborhood was on some sort of negative vortex that let spirits in. He said that everybody who lived on this street and the surrounding ones would have a tragedy happen to them. My family had death after death. Our next door neighbors had awful luck. Another house directly across from us ( not the psychic guy ) was always being sold and rebought. Nobody wanted to stay there for some reason. I believe two of the men died of sudden and random heart attacks. Another person burned themselves alive in their garage. Another house in my neighborhood was redoing their basement and they found satanic things written on the walls and some sort of relics. My house specifically though I believe had the most activity. Mostly in the basements. Lights would go on and off by themselves. Things would slam and break on their own. A picture of Jesus flew across the room by itself and dented our dryer. Our family or friends who stayed over said they would hear somebody saying “get out” and everybody would see dark figures, including me. I used to hear people calling my name when nobody was home or my Mom was sleeping. We would always hear loud bangs. It got so bad we had to have our house blessed. We used to hear scratching all over the walls and random old music. When my grandfather died me, my Mom, my grandma, and my friend said they saw him. My friend said that he was up in the trees. Every year a bunch of squirrels would jump into our pool and die. There was a lamp in the basement that if we asked a ghost to turn it on they would. My aunt and my Mom played an Ouija Board when they were younger. I think maybe that’s why these things were happening, on top of the whole neighborhood being haunted. We ended up selling our house and moving out. We sometimes check up on the lady who owns the house now. She posts all the time how the house is haunted. She also had a lot of tragedies. My Mom also babysat for one of the houses in our neighborhood, she said that the little girl woke up in the middle of the night and opened the front door. My Mom asked her what she was doing and she said that the people in her pillow told her to open the door. That was the same house where the two men had heart attacks. Ever since I lived in that house I have felt like I’m sensitive to ghosts.

Weird stuff at my dad's old house

I always had strange encounters at my dad's house. It was a very active place with activity. As a teenager, I remember I saw my dad walk through the living room, into the kitchen, and then in the laundry room. I was walking behind him trying to get his attention, but he wasn't answering me. As soon as I turned the corner to the laundry room, he wasn't there. The laundry room was empty. I was very confused and walked toward his bedroom. He was sitting on his bed watching TV. I felt super creeped out by this because I sometimes saw random looking people in the house too, but they would also disappear. I used to hear sobbing in the house as well. Usually it was kind of quiet, but on one particular night, I laid on the bed with my sister reading the Bible out loud. The sobbing was really really loud. I was so confused because my sister wasn't reacting at all. I went out to the living room where the rest of my family were and still hearing the sobbing. No one was reacting, and I asked if anyone has been crying, and everyone said no. I told my dad that I have been hearing it, and he told me to keep reading it out loud and to walk around the house while I do it. It did stop after I did this. I went to every room and closet with this. I just wanted to share this creepiness with a community. I've been dying to tell my stories lol

The elevator from hell

few years ago I was living in Wellington City in New Zealand, right in the middle of the city as a student at university, sharing an apartment with my best friends. One of my friends had a gym membership to a gym down the road, and because we were students, we would sometimes all sneak in using her key card.

One night at around 1:00am, the three of us decided to walk to the gym for a late workout. The gym was on the second floor of a high rise business building, and to access it you had to scan a key card in the elevator because the building only allowed access to certain floors for security reasons.

We got into the elevator, pressed floor 2, scanned the key card, and the doors closed, but instead of going to level 2, floor 9 lit up on the numbers screen.

Immediately we knew something was wrong because floor 9 should not have been accessible without separate key card authorization, and we definitely had not selected it. We tried to stop the elevator, but it kept going up.

When the doors opened on floor 9, it revealed a huge completely empty room. There was nothing inside except one single chair placed in the middle of the room. The lights were off, it was clear when the doors opened that the entire room was exposed, no nooks to hide in etc, just one big room.

All three of us screamed and backed into the corner of the elevator, completely terrified.

Then the doors closed again by themselves and reopened on the exact same floor, except this time the lights were on.

I looked around carefully to see if someone had been there, but there was nobody. The room was still empty. At the far end I could see a hallway behind glass, but there was no one there either.

What made it even stranger was that it would have been almost impossible for someone to prank us because the elevator required key card access and nobody should have been able to send it to that floor or be waiting there. I also want to note the room was dirty, abandoned looking, no cleaners ever on site after hours.

The doors then shut much faster than before, and without us pressing anything, the elevator took us straight down to floor 2.

The whole time we stayed pressed into the corner, terrified, until we got to the level 2 gym.

To this day I still think about it and wonder what actually happened, this kind of thing never happened again also, no floors allowed us without a keycard, we never got sent to other floors again etc.

Experience Haunted trail investigation part 1

So this happened a few weeks ago, cause I was on the trail for an investigation (during the summer) and going again with a friend to investigate more.

This happened on a fun moon after a rain/thunder storm happened with a tornado not far from where I live at in my hometown. I was investigating with my spirit box and I asked if Becca (the little girl who was murdered on the trail when it was a railroad) is here with me and to speak through the spirit box.

The voice that came through was a males voice calling me a bitch. I was shocked as I looked around and tried to see if I can see where this male spirit might be but didn't find it. So I said that they have a few minutes to say anything before heading home.

Nothing else came through after I said that and said bye and got a little girl saying I'm here and bye one after the other. I knew it was Becca and head back home. Before leaving the trail I told the spirits to stay on the trail except for Becca and her protectors can come because of the good energy they have.

The Last Round

A few years ago, I rented an Airbnb in Sackville, New Brunswick, inside an old schoolhouse that had been converted into apartments and small businesses.

I arrived around sunset, and the place immediately gave me chills. It was a big old yellow-and-white wooden building at the end of a quiet road, and by the time I went inside, it was almost dark.

The moment I entered, I had this very strong feeling that I wasn’t alone.

There were no other cars outside, the other Airbnb unit was empty, and all the businesses downstairs were closed. Still, I felt like someone was watching me.

For some reason, I also had the very specific impression that the presence was female.

So I did something a little strange. I spoke out loud and basically said:

“Thank you for letting me stay here. I’m only here for a few days. I’ll respect your space, and I hope we can peacefully coexist.”

Oddly enough, I immediately felt calmer.

That night, I woke up to footsteps.

Not random creaks. Actual rhythmic footsteps moving through the building. Sometimes they sounded farther away, sometimes closer, like someone was walking through the old school.

I got up and checked outside.

My car was still the only one there.

I opened my apartment door to check the hallway and the other unit.

Dark. Empty.

And the second I opened the door, the footsteps stopped.

I went back to bed.

A few minutes later, they started again.

At that point I basically thought, Okay. Do your rounds.

I didn’t hear them much after that, although I continued to feel like there was a presence in the building.

A few days later, I mentioned the experience to a local guy I had met.

His reaction immediately caught my attention.

He told me that one of the last teachers who worked in that school had died there from a heart attack, reportedly in front of her students.

That stopped me in my tracks.

A female presence.

Footsteps through the school.

Someone seemingly walking around at night.

A teacher still doing her rounds.

I later looked into the history and confirmed that a teacher had indeed died at the school during its final years of operation.

The strange part is that I never felt threatened by her.

If anything, she felt protective.

I actually returned to the same Airbnb the following year. This time, I didn’t hear footsteps at all.

But the atmosphere felt completely different.

Warm. Gentle. Familiar.

I had this very strange feeling that she recognized me.

Before leaving, I even told the Airbnb owners what I had experienced. I said something like:

“I think you may have a spirit here. But don’t worry. She’s kind.”

So yeah.

I think I once stayed in a haunted school.

Except “haunted” doesn’t really feel like the right word.

It felt more like someone never stopped watching over the place.

Unknown Unknown fused figure just ran past me

Ok so our house has small instances of unexplainable things happening but in very very spaced out time frames. Lights randomly turning on, walking in parts of the home no one is in, and much more. This activity usually takes place at night but never during the day so this is what makes what happened today so much more interesting.

Its the middle of the day at the moment and I had went into the bathroom to get ready for work. I was looking at the mirror and brushing my hair when a figure shot right by me. I felt the presence of a person and there was even the walk by wind (all windows in this house are closed). But i also saw a figure that looked like a person but with their legs and upper body fused together. The figure looked caucasian but not like a traditional ghost.

I tried thinking of explainable theories as to what it was.. but walk by wind and a fast moving figure? It was so weird..

Discussion My boyfriend heard a girl crying outside our hotel room in Ghandruk, and I experienced sleep paralysis that same night

So, my boyfriend and I went on a trip to Ghandruk, Nepal. We hadn’t booked a hotel in advance because we were pretty sure we wanted to stay at Gurung Hotel. Unfortunately, all the rooms were already booked, so we decided to stay at another hotel nearby.

We were exhausted from travelling that day, so we spent most of the afternoon taking a nap. In the evening, after dinner, we decided to play PUBG in our room.

In the middle of the game, my boyfriend got up to use the bathroom. When he came back, I immediately noticed something was off. His face looked genuinely terrified. I had never seen that expression on him before.

Obviously, I asked him what happened, but he just said, “Nothing, let’s keep playing.”

I knew something was wrong, but I didn’t push him.

Eventually, we went to sleep.

That night, I experienced sleep paralysis. I’ve had it a few times before, so I knew what was happening, but this episode felt much scarier than the others. I felt like I couldn’t breathe or move, and it felt as though someone was pressing down hard on my chest.

It was terrifying, but eventually, I managed to snap out of it. I flinched, settled down, and somehow went back to sleep.

The next day, we returned to Pokhara. That was when my boyfriend finally told me what had happened in the bathroom.

While he was washing his hands, he heard a girl crying right outside our hotel room door.

Now, here’s the thing: there was no room directly opposite ours. There was just a passage leading outside, with a garden or farm area beyond it. There were no guests staying in the rooms next to us either.

He said the crying sounded like it was coming from just outside our door.He deliberately didn’t tell me what he had heard because he knew I would get scared, and he didn’t want both of us to spend the entire night freaking out instead of sleeping.

I still can't explain what he heard that night. Maybe there was a perfectly normal explanation, but the fact that I experienced such terrifying sleep paralysis on the very same night makes the whole thing feel unsettling.

I know sleep paralysis can cause incredibly vivid sensations, and I'm not saying that proves anything paranormal happened. But the timing of everything still creeps me out.

So, Reddit, what do you think? Has anyone experienced something similar while staying in a hotel in the mountains? And if you've visited Ghandruk, have you ever heard any strange stories about places there?
