Scope: A research framework for studying how a structured musical work, its lyrics, and listener context relate to momentary experience, physiology, and neural dynamics. The Wonderland narrative remains an artistic and hypotheses-generating layer; it is not treated as evidence of neurochemical or clinical effects.
Upgrade: 48 advanced approaches organized into six modules, with core equations, measurements, tests, and failure conditions. “Novel” here means an original integration and research agenda for this framework, not a claim that every component is unprecedented in the wider literature.
1. Scientific reset
The original 52-equation architecture contains useful metaphors—prediction error, coherence, catharsis, agency, memory, and social connection—but its mathematical form does not establish biological activity. Version 4.0 applies four corrections:
- Latent does not mean measured. The Wonderland State is a latent construct inferred from observations, not a physical unified field.
- Proxy does not mean mechanism. EEG, HRV, skin conductance, self-report, and behavior measure different constructs. None is a universal readout of dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, cortisol, BDNF, epigenetics, or neurogenesis.
- Parameters are estimated, not ordained. Values such as
τ = 1.5, r = 1, and 1/φ may be tested as hypotheses but are not assumed to be universal optima.
- Falsifiability outranks elegance. Every mechanism must have a measurement model, a comparison condition, uncertainty, and a result that would count against it.
Evidence labels
- E0 — Artistic: metaphor, lyric, narrative, or aesthetic intention.
- E1 — Operational: a defined variable that can be computed or measured.
- E2 — Associational: a preregistered relationship observed in data.
- E3 — Causal: an effect supported by randomized or otherwise credible causal identification.
- E4 — Replicated mechanism: a causal result replicated across samples with convergent mechanistic evidence.
No claim may be presented at a higher tier than its evidence supports.
2. Core architecture
For listener i, define:
u_i(t): time-aligned stimulus features—loudness, auditory envelope, onset strength, spectral flux, harmony, rhythm, model-based surprisal, and lyric features.
z_i(t) ∈ R^d: low-dimensional latent experiential/physiological state.
s_i(t): discrete regime such as anticipation, drop, silence, narrative processing, or recovery.
y_i^(m)(t): observation from modality m, such as EEG, ECG, respiration, EDA, pupil, movement, or self-report.
a_i(t): optional adaptive audio action.
c_i: stable listener covariates, including baseline hearing, musical sophistication, sleep, and context.
The general model is:
text
s_i(t) ~ P(s_i(t) | s_i(t-1), z_i(t-1), u_i(t))
z_i(t+1) = f_θ(z_i(t), u_i(t), a_i(t), c_i, s_i(t)) + ε_i(t)
y_i^(m)(t) ~ p_m(y_i^(m)(t) | g_m(z_i(t)), u_i(t), nuisance_i^(m)(t))
f_θ may be linear, nonlinear, stochastic, or neural. Each g_m is an explicit observation model. Stimulus features remain in the observation equations where needed so that direct auditory responses are not mislabeled as changes in the latent Wonderland State.
Operational target
Replace maximal utility with a multi-objective, participant-specific outcome vector:
text
J_i = w_i^T q_i - λ_risk R_i
Here q_i can include self-reported agency, enjoyment, calm, meaning, or recall, while R_i includes hearing dose, discomfort, adverse events, and loss of control. Weights are elicited rather than assumed. No latent-state score is treated as intrinsically good without validation.
Module I — Identifiable dynamical foundations
1. Dimensional analysis and dimensionless state variables
Upgrade: Every equation receives units and admissible ranges. Observed variables are normalized within a prespecified reference population or within-person baseline; dimensionless combinations are formed deliberately.
text
x̃_j = (x_j - μ_j,ref) / σ_j,ref
Π_k = Π_j x_j^(p_kj), with [Π_k] = 1
Test: Automated unit propagation rejects invalid additions, exponentials, and logarithms.
Falsifier: A model cannot be calibrated, transfers poorly across recording scales, or its predictions change under harmless unit conversions.
2. Bayesian latent state-space estimation
Upgrade: Replace the directly asserted W(t) with a posterior distribution over a latent state.
text
p(z_0:T, θ | y_0:T, u_0:T) ∝ p(θ)p(z_0)
Π_t p(z_t | z_t-1, u_t, θ) p(y_t | z_t, u_t, θ)
Test: Posterior predictive checks and held-out modality prediction.
Falsifier: The latent state is unstable across reasonable priors, fails posterior predictive checks, or predicts no observed outcome better than baseline features.
3. Switching linear dynamical systems
Upgrade: Model verses, bridges, drops, and silences as discovered regimes rather than imposing one stationary equation.
text
z_t = A_(s_t) z_t-1 + B_(s_t) u_t + η_t
P(s_t=j | s_t-1=k) = H_kj
Test: Compare discovered transitions with annotated musical events and held-out likelihood.
Falsifier: Regimes do not recur, align only by circular labeling, or add no predictive value over a non-switching model.
4. Hierarchical Bayesian personalization
Upgrade: Estimate population structure and individual deviations simultaneously, avoiding both one-size-fits-all claims and noisy per-person models.
text
θ_i ~ N(μ_group + Γc_i, Σ_group)
y_i,t ~ p(y_i,t | θ_i, z_i,t, u_i,t)
Test: Leave-one-listener-out prediction and shrinkage diagnostics.
Falsifier: Apparent individual effects vanish under partial pooling or do not replicate in later sessions.
5. Continuous-time neural stochastic differential equations
Upgrade: Represent responses between irregular samples and distinguish deterministic drift from diffusion.
text
dz_t = f_θ(z_t, u_t, c_i)dt + L_θ(z_t)dW_t
Test: Forecast at unseen sampling times; compare against discrete-time and Gaussian-process baselines.
Falsifier: Estimated diffusion absorbs systematic model error, or forecasts do not improve out of sample.
6. Controlled Koopman operator learning
Upgrade: Lift nonlinear neural/physiological dynamics into a space where their evolution and response to audio actions are approximately linear.
text
g(z_t+1) ≈ K_z g(z_t) + K_u a_t
ẑ_t = h(g(z_t))
Test: Multi-step prediction, eigenfunction stability, and control-aware cross-validation.
Falsifier: The learned operator is non-identifiable, unstable, or no better than a direct nonlinear baseline.
7. Sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics
Upgrade: Use sparse regression to discover a small interpretable equation library instead of proliferating named equations.
text
ż = Ξ(z,u,a)ξ
ξ* = argmin_ξ ||ż - Ξξ||²_2 + λ||ξ||_1
Test: Noise sensitivity, bootstrap term selection, and simulation-based recovery.
Falsifier: Selected terms change under tiny perturbations or fail to reproduce held-out trajectories.
8. Physiology-informed constraints and conservation budgets
Upgrade: Penalize impossible trajectories and encode known bounds without pretending that audio determines neurochemistry.
text
L = L_fit + λ_1 L_bounds + λ_2 L_smooth + λ_3 L_phys
L_phys = ||C(z,u,a)||²
Examples include non-negative rates, bounded heart rate, finite signal energy, and plausible respiratory coupling.
Test: Constraint violation rate and external physiological validity.
Falsifier: Constraints merely hide misspecification or worsen every held-out metric.
Module II — Stimulus representations and neural measurement
9. Self-supervised audio foundation representations
Upgrade: Add learned audio embeddings to hand-engineered features, while preserving interpretable acoustic controls.
text
e_t = Encoder_SSL(audio_≤t)
y_neural(t) = Σ_l β_l^T e_t-l + γ^T a_t + ε_t
Causal encoders are used for real-time work; bidirectional encoders are allowed only offline.
Test: Nested comparison against envelope, loudness, spectral, and onset baselines.
Falsifier: Embeddings add no out-of-sample neural prediction or exploit future-audio leakage.
10. Dual musical surprisal and uncertainty
Upgrade: Separate unexpectedness from model uncertainty and control for sensory adaptation.
text
S_t = -log p(x_t | x_<t)
H_t = -Σ_x p(x | x_<t) log p(x | x_<t)
R_neural = β_0 + β_S S_t + β_H H_t + β_A A_t + ε_t
A_t contains acoustic and repetition controls.
Test: Independent stimulus sets and crossed comparisons of multiple expectation models.
Falsifier: Surprise effects disappear after acoustic/adaptation controls or fail to generalize to new pieces.
11. Multiscale temporal response functions
Upgrade: Estimate distinct neural response kernels for acoustic, rhythmic, semantic, and expectation features.
text
y_c(t) = Σ_m Σ_l w_c,m(l)x_m(t-l) + ε_c(t)
Regularization and basis kernels handle correlated features and multiple lags.
Test: Time-blocked cross-validation and channel/cluster correction.
Falsifier: Kernels are irreproducible or effects are explained by a simpler onset-only model.
12. Cross-validated encoding–decoding duality
Upgrade: Require convergent evidence: stimulus features predict neural data, and neural data decode only the claimed stimulus properties.
text
R²_enc = 1 - ||y - ŷ||²/||y - ȳ||²
AUC_dec = P(s(x_pos) > s(x_neg))
Test: Disjoint stimuli, participants, and preprocessing folds; compare both directions.
Falsifier: High decoding arises from temporal autocorrelation, artifacts, or information unavailable at test time.
13. Source-resolved EEG/MEG forward modeling
Upgrade: Replace region names inferred from scalp maps with forward models, source priors, and spatial uncertainty.
text
Y_sensor = L J_source + N
p(J | Y) ∝ p(Y | LJ)p(J)
Test: Resolution matrices, leakage assessment, and simulation-based source recovery.
Falsifier: A claimed regional effect changes location across reasonable head models or cannot be distinguished from volume conduction.
14. Aperiodic-aware oscillatory decomposition
Upgrade: Separate periodic power from the aperiodic 1/f background before claiming band-specific entrainment.
text
P(f) = Aperiodic(f; offset, exponent) + Σ_k Gaussian_k(f; μ_k,σ_k,A_k)
Test: Compare raw band power, residual periodic power, and aperiodic parameters.
Falsifier: An alleged theta/alpha/gamma effect is entirely explained by broadband or aperiodic shifts.
15. Surrogate-controlled cross-frequency coupling
Upgrade: Test theta–gamma or other coupling against stationary and nonstationary nulls, with event-related power controlled.
text
MI_obs = ModulationIndex(φ_low(t), A_high(t))
MI_null = {MI^(b)}_b=1^B from phase/time-shift/AR surrogates
Test: Multiple estimators, equal epoch lengths, and evoked-response controls.
Falsifier: Coupling disappears under appropriate surrogates or is driven by waveform shape and transients.
16. Time-varying, state-conditional connectivity
Upgrade: Model connectivity as a function of regime and stimulus, not as a single correlation over an entire track.
text
Σ_t = Σ_0 + Σ_k q_k(z_t,s_t)Ω_k
Δ_t = Connectivity_t(active) - Connectivity_t(sham)
Test: Source leakage correction, split-half reliability, and out-of-sample regime prediction.
Falsifier: Connectivity is unreliable, identical across conditions, or reducible to shared acoustic drive.
Module III — Nonlinear dynamics, information, and geometry
17. Recurrence quantification analysis
Upgrade: Quantify repeated trajectories, determinism, and laminarity without imposing a golden-ratio attractor.
text
R_tj = Θ(ε - ||z_t - z_j||)
DET = Σ_l=l_min lP(l) / Σ_l=1 lP(l)
Test: Embedding sensitivity and surrogate recurrence distributions.
Falsifier: Results reverse across plausible embeddings or match shuffled/stationary surrogates.
18. Reservoir-computing response models
Upgrade: Use a fixed high-dimensional recurrent reservoir to capture transient nonlinear responses with comparatively simple readout training.
text
r_t = (1-α)r_t-1 + α tanh(W_r r_t-1 + W_u u_t)
ŷ_t = W_out r_t
Test: Compare against linear TRF and recurrent neural baselines under identical splits.
Falsifier: Apparent gains depend on test leakage or fail across reservoir initializations.
19. Neural controlled differential equations
Upgrade: Model irregularly sampled wearable data as a response to the continuous path of observations.
text
dh_t = f_θ(h_t)dX_t, h_0 = g_θ(x_0)
X_t is an interpolated path containing audio and sensor timestamps.
Test: Missing-data stress tests and asynchronous-sampling benchmarks.
Falsifier: Performance collapses under realistic missingness or is no better than imputation plus a simpler model.
20. Gaussian-process latent-force models
Upgrade: Infer smooth hidden influences and uncertainty without naming unmeasured neurochemical causes.
text
f(t) ~ GP(m(t),k(t,t'))
ż(t) = Az(t) + Bf(t) + Cu(t)
Test: Posterior calibration and recovery of synthetic latent forces.
Falsifier: Latent forces are non-identifiable or merely duplicate measured stimulus features.
21. Bayesian online change-point detection
Upgrade: Detect transitions in listener state without presuming that every drop or 300 ms silence has the same effect.
text
P(r_t | y_1:t) ∝ Σ_r_t-1 P(r_t|r_t-1)
P(y_t | y_t-r_t:t-1) P(r_t-1 | y_1:t-1)
Test: Event-aligned probability changes and comparison with randomized event times.
Falsifier: Change points occur no more often near musical events than at control times.
22. Dynamic causal modeling and active inference
Upgrade: Compare explicit generative models of top-down expectation and bottom-up sensory input.
text
F = E_q[log p(y,z | m)] - E_q[log q(z)]
Model evidence is adjusted for complexity. Active-inference constructs remain hypotheses, not direct metabolic measurements.
Test: Bayesian model comparison and parameter recovery.
Falsifier: A non-hierarchical or purely acoustic model explains the data better.
23. Partial information decomposition
Upgrade: Separate unique, redundant, and synergistic information carried by audio, lyrics, and listener state.
text
I({Audio,Lyrics};Y) = Unique_A + Unique_L + Redundant + Synergy
Test: Estimator-specific bias correction and independently manipulated feature sets.
Falsifier: Claimed synergy is unstable across estimators or absent under factorial stimulus manipulations.
24. Topological data analysis of state trajectories
Upgrade: Measure loops, voids, and multiscale geometry in latent trajectories rather than calling utility a strange attractor by metaphor.
text
PH_k = {(b_j,d_j)} for H_k(VR_ε(Z))
Persistence_j = d_j - b_j
Test: Compare persistence landscapes with geometry-preserving nulls.
Falsifier: Topological features are sampling artifacts or do not predict any held-out experience or behavior.
Module IV — Multimodal and causal identification
25. Multimodal contrastive alignment
Upgrade: Align synchronized audio, neural, physiological, and experiential representations while retaining modality-specific information.
text
L_NCE = -log exp(sim(v_a,v_y)/T) /
Σ_k exp(sim(v_a,v_y^k)/T)
Test: Cross-modal retrieval on held-out sessions and hard-negative controls.
Falsifier: Alignment relies on session identity, timestamps, or artifacts rather than shared content.
26. Physiological sensor-fusion state model
Upgrade: Combine ECG-derived interbeat intervals, measured respiration, EDA, pupil, and movement with modality-specific noise models.
text
z_t+1 = Fz_t + Bu_t + η_t
y_t^(m) = H_m z_t + D_m n_t^(m) + ν_t^(m)
HRV metrics are computed only with adequate signal quality and respiratory context; HF/LF ratio is not treated as a direct vagal-state meter.
Test: Leave-one-modality-out prediction and signal-quality stratification.
Falsifier: Effects vanish after movement, respiration, or artifact control.
27. Intersubject correlation and representational similarity
Upgrade: Test whether the same stimulus produces shared temporal responses and shared relational structure across listeners.
text
ISC_c = corr_t(y_c^(i)(t), mean_j≠i y_c^(j)(t))
RSA = corr(vec(RDM_neural), vec(RDM_model))
Test: Circular time-shift nulls and cross-validated model RDMs.
Falsifier: Synchrony is driven by generic envelopes or disappears after correcting cross-listener leakage and common acoustic responses.
28. Dyadic and group hyperscanning
Upgrade: Extend social resonance from a metaphor to measurable listener–listener or performer–listener coupling.
text
y_i(t) = β_0 + β_1 u_t + β_2 y_-i(t-l) + b_i + ε_i(t)
Estimate within-dyad dependence with directionality and common-stimulus controls.
Test: Real dyads versus recomputed pseudo-dyads and shuffled partners.
Falsifier: Apparent coupling is fully explained by simultaneous exposure to the same audio.
29. Randomized N-of-1 microtrials
Upgrade: Randomize short audio segments or parameter variations within each listener across repeated sessions.
text
Y_i,b = α_i + τ_i A_i,b + β_i X_i,b + ε_i,b
A_i,b ∈ {active, matched control}, randomized by block
Test: Preregistered carryover model, washout sensitivity, and individual posterior effects.
Falsifier: Individual benefits do not replicate across blocks or are indistinguishable from time trends.
30. Active-sham and expectancy factorial design
Upgrade: Distinguish specific acoustic mechanisms from preference, suggestion, attention, and demand characteristics.
text
Design: stimulation (active/control) × expectancy (high/neutral)
Y = β_0 + β_1 Active + β_2 Expectancy + β_3 Active×Expectancy + ...
Controls should preserve loudness, rhythm, aesthetic quality, and task demands as closely as possible.
Test: Blinding-index assessment and expectancy ratings before outcomes.
Falsifier: Effects track expectancy only, or participants reliably detect the intended condition in a way that explains outcomes.
31. Time-lagged causal mediation
Upgrade: Test proposed chains such as silence → prediction error → reported agency instead of asserting neurochemical cascades.
text
A_t → M_t+Δ → Y_t+2Δ
Indirect effect = E[Y(a,M(a')) - Y(a,M(a))]
Use randomized mediators where feasible and state sequential ignorability assumptions otherwise.
Test: Mediation sensitivity analysis and alternative temporal orderings.
Falsifier: The mediator changes after the outcome, or the indirect effect is fragile to plausible unmeasured confounding.
32. Longitudinal target-trial emulation and heterogeneous effects
Upgrade: Specify eligibility, assignment, time zero, follow-up, outcomes, and estimand for repeated listening; then estimate who benefits or is harmed.
text
CATE(x) = E[Y(1)-Y(0) | X=x]
Use causal forests or other learners only after defining the causal estimand and preventing immortal-time/confounding biases.
Test: Calibration of heterogeneity and prospective validation in a new cohort.
Falsifier: Apparent responder groups fail prospective validation or are artifacts of multiple testing.
Module V — Adaptive, personalized, and agency-preserving control
33. Phase-specific closed-loop auditory stimulation
Upgrade: Trigger or modify sound using measured phase/state estimates, with causal delays and artifact handling made explicit.
text
a_t = π(φ̂_t, ẑ_t), t_action ≥ t_estimate + δ_system
Test: Compare phase-locked, phase-random, open-loop, and yoked-control conditions.
Falsifier: Phase-specific effects do not exceed yoked stimulation or are contaminated by stimulation artifacts.
34. Model predictive control
Upgrade: Optimize a short sequence of audio actions while forecasting their consequences and respecting limits.
text
a_t:t+H* = argmin Σ_k=1^H
||q_t+k - q_target||_Q² + ||a_t+k||_R²
subject to z_t+k+1 = f(z_t+k,u_t+k,a_t+k), a ∈ A_safe
Test: Receding-horizon simulation followed by randomized controller comparison.
Falsifier: The controller is unstable, exploits model errors, or performs worse than fixed audio.
35. Constrained contextual bandits
Upgrade: Personalize bounded choices among prescreened audio variants while balancing exploration and exploitation.
text
a_t = argmax_a UCB(a | x_t)
subject to E[R_risk(a,x_t)] ≤ ρ_max
Test: Off-policy evaluation before deployment and randomized comparison afterward.
Falsifier: Reward hacking, excessive exposure, or no improvement over random assignment among safe variants.
36. Offline safe reinforcement learning
Upgrade: Learn sequential policies only from logged data with behavior-policy support and explicit pessimism.
text
Q̂ = argmin_Q L_Bellman(Q) + λ UncertaintyPenalty(Q)
π* = argmax_π E[Q̂(x,π(x))], π ∈ Π_safe
Test: Support diagnostics, conservative off-policy intervals, and simulator stress tests.
Falsifier: The learned policy chooses out-of-support actions or its estimated advantage disappears under conservative evaluation.
37. Bayesian optimization of dose and timing
Upgrade: Optimize a small number of interpretable parameters—duration, modulation depth, spacing—without exhaustive exposure.
text
f(x) ~ GP(μ(x),k(x,x'))
x_next = argmax_x Acquisition(x) - λ Risk(x)
Test: Safe candidate sets, replicated optimum validation, and simple-dose baselines.
Falsifier: The optimum shifts randomly across repeats or produces no gain over a prespecified default.
38. Individual spectral-peak adaptation
Upgrade: Replace universal frequency prescriptions with each listener’s measured spectral peaks and response function, estimated in a separate baseline.
text
f_i* = argmax_f PeriodicPower_i(f), f ∈ F_band
f_stim,i = h(f_i*, session_context)
Test: Compare individualized and fixed frequencies with identical carriers and loudness.
Falsifier: Individualization does not improve target engagement or outcomes, or peak estimates are unreliable.
39. Participant-specific digital twins
Upgrade: Fit a generative simulator to each participant for counterfactual planning, with explicit model discrepancy.
text
y_i,t+1 = f_i(z_i,t,u_i,t,a_i,t) + δ_i,t + ε_i,t
δ_i ~ GP(0,k_discrepancy)
Test: Prospective multi-step prediction and counterfactual validation against randomized actions.
Falsifier: The twin reproduces training data but fails prospective action-response prediction.
40. Human-in-the-loop preference and agency constraints
Upgrade: Treat opt-out, preference, and perceived control as first-class variables rather than resistance to be suppressed.
text
max_π E[J_agency + J_wellbeing]
subject to P(override available)=1,
P(discomfort > d_max) ≤ α,
exposure ≤ D_max
Test: Measure override use, understanding, regret, and perceived pressure.
Falsifier: Objective reward improves while agency, comprehension, or willingness to continue declines.
Module VI — Validation, reproducibility, uncertainty, and safety
41. Preregistered multiverse and specification-curve analysis
Upgrade: Separate confirmatory tests from exploration and reveal dependence on reasonable analytical choices.
text
Specification s = (preprocess_s, estimator_s, covariates_s, outcome_s)
Curve = {effect_s, SE_s} over defensible s
Test: Preregister primary choices and report the full defensible curve.
Falsifier: The claimed conclusion exists only in a narrow, post hoc region of specifications.
42. Nested, group-aware validation and leakage audits
Upgrade: Keep preprocessing, feature selection, tuning, and testing separate; split by participant and session where generalization requires it.
text
Outer: train/test participants or sessions
Inner: model selection on training folds only
Score = mean_outer Metric(test_outer)
Test: Automated provenance of every transformation and timestamp.
Falsifier: Performance collapses after removing future information, repeated-sample leakage, or participant identity cues.
43. Bayesian model comparison and posterior predictive adequacy
Upgrade: Compare models by predictive adequacy and calibration, not equation count or narrative appeal.
text
ELPD = Σ_t log p(y_t | y_-t)
y_t^rep ~ p(y_t | y_training, m)
Use exact or approximate leave-one-out methods with diagnostics.
Test: Model stacking, calibration, and posterior predictive checks on meaningful statistics.
Falsifier: A simpler model wins, or replicated data differ systematically from observed data.
44. Synthetic ground truth and parameter recovery
Upgrade: Generate data with known mechanisms, artifacts, missingness, and effect sizes before interpreting real fits.
text
θ_true → Simulator → y_synth → Pipeline → θ̂
Recovery error = d(θ̂,θ_true)
Test: Coverage, bias, false-positive rate, and detection power across plausible regimes.
Falsifier: The pipeline recovers spurious mechanisms or cannot recover effects of the claimed magnitude.
45. Mechanism-specific surrogate ensembles
Upgrade: Match the null to the hypothesis rather than relying on one generic shuffle.
text
Null library = {circular shift, IAAFT, AR, block shuffle,
event-time randomization, pseudo-dyad}
p_combined = combination of prespecified null tests
Test: Null calibration on synthetic data and equal-preprocessing comparisons.
Falsifier: The effect persists only under an inappropriate null or fails the mechanism-matched surrogate.
46. Distribution-shift detection and calibrated prediction intervals
Upgrade: Detect new devices, populations, and contexts, and provide uncertainty for individual predictions.
text
C(x) = {y : s(x,y) ≤ q_1-α}
OOD score = D(p_train(x),p_current(x))
Use split conformal or another valid method matched to the dependence structure.
Test: Coverage under site/device/session shift and abstention performance.
Falsifier: Empirical coverage is materially below nominal coverage, especially in new groups.
47. Reproducible data standards and computational provenance
Upgrade: Use modality-appropriate BIDS structures, raw-data preservation, versioned stimulus files, event timestamps, environment capture, and immutable analysis identifiers.
text
Artifact hash = H(raw data + stimuli + events + code + environment + seed)
Test: Independent rerun reproduces figures and primary estimates within declared numerical tolerance.
Falsifier: Results cannot be regenerated, event timing cannot be audited, or manual steps alter outcomes without records.
48. Safety-constrained governance and stopping rules
Upgrade: Treat listening dose, adverse effects, privacy, and clinical boundaries as design constraints.
text
Dose = energy-equivalent sound exposure over time
Stop if: calibrated exposure exceeds protocol limit,
serious/persistent discomfort occurs,
participant withdraws,
data quality makes closed-loop control unreliable,
or preregistered harm boundary is crossed.
Include volume calibration, conservative default levels, no use while driving or performing safety-critical tasks, accessible opt-out, privacy-preserving governance for biometric data, and ethics review for intervention research. Photosensitivity/seizure risk, hearing status, pregnancy where relevant to concurrent measurements, medications, and psychiatric/neurological history require protocol-specific screening rather than universal claims.
Test: Independent safety review, adverse-event capture, exposure logs, and stopping-rule simulations.
Falsifier: The system cannot enforce limits, underreports harms, or continues adapting under unreliable sensing.

4. Minimum decisive experiment
Research question
Does the structured anthem produce a specific, reproducible effect on momentary agency/calm beyond acoustically matched music and expectancy?
Design
- Preregister one primary outcome, one primary neural or physiological target, the estimand, exclusions, and analysis code.
- Use a randomized, double-blind where feasible, within-participant crossover with at least: original anthem, acoustically matched active control, parameter-modified anthem, and expectancy-control condition.
- Calibrate playback and log sound exposure, device, environment, timestamps, and all adaptive actions.
- Extract time-aligned audio envelope, onset, spectral flux, loudness, surprisal, and lyric features before outcome analysis.
- Record the minimum modality set justified by the hypothesis; do not collect modalities merely to decorate the model.
- Fit a hierarchical switching state-space model with held-out listeners/sessions and a simpler TRF/mixed-model baseline.
- Include active-sham, event-time, and aperiodic/spectral surrogates where relevant.
- Report effect sizes, uncertainty, adverse events, blinding, missingness, and null results.
- Replicate the primary result prospectively before proposing closed-loop optimization.
Decision rules
- Target engagement without outcome benefit: retain only the physiological finding; reject the wellbeing claim.
- Outcome benefit without target engagement: retain the behavioral result; reject the proposed mechanism.
- Benefit only under high expectancy: classify expectancy as a principal mechanism or moderator.
- No advantage over matched control: retain the work as art, not as a neurotechnology.
- Heterogeneous harm or benefit: stop universal deployment and investigate prospectively.
5. Implementation order
Phase A — Validity: Approaches 1–4, 9–11, 14, 29–30, 41–48.
Phase B — Dynamics: Approaches 5–8, 12–24, 25–28.
Phase C — Causal mechanism: Approaches 31–32 and targeted replications.
Phase D — Adaptation: Approaches 33–40 only after safe target engagement and prospective validation.
This ordering prevents a sophisticated controller from optimizing an invalid or harmful proxy.
