Meta Want to Talk German With Me? R/German's one (and only!) official language exchange thread

Instead of the many "looking for speaking partner" posts that have been cluttering the sub, here's the brand new official "I am looking for people to talk in German with" thread!

It will from now on be mandatory to put all language exchange requests here. Individual posts will be deleted.

Things to include in your comment:

• Native/main language
• German language level
• Means of communication
• Expectations from potential learning partners (optional)

Make it nice and KISS (keep it simple & stupid). This is NOT a dating platform, anything in this sense will get you banned.

You are free to comment with a new request once a week.

Discussion Noah's Arsch instead of Arche Noah

So, one time I accidentally said “Noah’s Arch (but sounded like Arsch”) instead of “Arche Noah”. The person looked like they were trying to figure out what on earth I was talking about, and I could tell they were about to burst out laughing. But I kept a straight face and corrected myself like nothing had happened. 😂

Have you ever had a similar experience?

Question Series/Filme/Media um Wortspiele, Wortwitze, Flachwitze und/oder Kalauer zu lernen?

Hallo zusammen!

Vielen Dank vorab!

Question Question on german literature

Hey, I am learning German and i found out from previous experience that I learn much better by reading good literature than listening to podcasts and videos on the internet (not saying that one learns better by doing it, but for me it works, because I am generally more invested). I wanted to know if any of you german natives could say to me, whether the following text is useful for modern German speaking. I am interested in this, because my English greatly improved after I read extensively a ancient greek author in English. My hope would be that reading in German a great German speaking author, whose books I read in English, I could naturally absorb German more easily and, in addition, acquire the level of refinement contained in his writing style (which, at least, in English, I am particularly fond of). In this way, I could have like an ideal way of speaking and strive for it, while knowing that it is not too formal and antique. Anyways, this is the text from one of my favourite german speaking authors, Max Nordau:

Worauf läuft all das hinaus?

By the way, I am right now in C1, but no matter how hard it is, I would like to improve my German. So, reading should never be a problem.

Thanks!

Request Books and shows

Hello,

I am learning German primarily through self-study and I have been trying to step up my efforts but have trouble with motivation sometimes. I’ve been wanting to incorporate it into my leisure time more and I like to read but I don‘t want to read books for small children. It might be too much for me at my current level but something around B1 or maybe even B2 level if books are even categorized in this way? I think reading something above my level would be good for growth if I study the vocabulary in it enough to understand the plot. Any recommendations on books or resources for finding books like this?

Also are there any free websites where I can watch shows in german with german subtitles? I figured that would be a good way to help with listening.

Any relevant resources are appreciated. Thanks a bunch

I’m slowly learning German and I just learned “she fell/she fell down” but the app I’m using taught me it as “Sie ist hingefallen”

I’m not understanding why it’s using ist instead of hat for she has fallen?

Beispiele:
Der See
Die See

Discussion Funny memorable German word (for me)

I am just curious, do you guys have any made up german word(s) that made sense to you but actually doesn’t exist?

I had a small Vokabeln practice with my German Teacher and I always Translate Connection to Konnekterien. Why ? I don’t know! Although now I know its Verbindung but my German Teacher at that time was really confused why I kept using this non-existent word in all our classes.

I just need a little laugh while learning this language because I still need my sanity 😭

Question Clothing colour question

Thanks for the help on my past 2 questions.

I have been able to figure out how to talk about other articles of clothing but I am struggling with trainers/sneakers.

In my sentence below, I understand well that I need to use the accusative case when referring to the trainers (being plural) so my guess is that the sentence would go as so (if talking about white trainers/sneakers):

Ich trage eine weißen Turnschuhe

Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for any help

Request Self-taught to B2 in German, but I haven't been able to study for months. Has anyone else been here?

Honestly, I think I'm writing this partly for some moral support.
I've been learning German since 2024. Completely self-taught, starting from zero with no outside help, I've made it to B2. Because of that, my listening and reading are far stronger than my speaking and writing. I can follow native-level podcasts without pausing. Learning a language from scratch while working 9 to 6 has been one of the biggest challenges I've ever taken on.
But since August, between things in my personal life and at work, I just haven't been able to find the energy to study. While I'm trying to get through what's happening in my personal life, I also feel like I'm betraying myself. I've been feeling a bit lonely with all this, so I wanted to post here.
I'm not even sure what my goal is anymore. I used to want to move to Germany, but right now things like visa processes and finding a job feel overwhelming. Still, I want to get the Goethe C1 certificate. Achieving that would mean a lot to me, and it would feel like a really important accomplishment.
Have any of you gone through something like this? If so, how did you get out of it? Any advice would mean a lot.

Question Need advice on taking up courses for b2 exam

So I want to write the the telc b2 exam.

I have stuided by myself these past 5 to 6 months. I feel and I am at b1 level. I feel I need to take up a course to get b2 level.

Can anyone recommend any such courses online/offline free/paid.

Should I take these courses or do I try hard and self study bymyself?

Will it just be all grammar? And what is meant by 'intensive course'?

Request App for fast case spotting?

i’m trying to learn declension and my issue is not as much learning by them heart, but more about spotting rapidly what the case is.

Is there like an app that shows you a sentence and asks you the role (case) of random words in that sentence so I can get better at it?

thanks

Discussion Passed Goethe C1 Schreiben with 79/100 🥹

I decided to start with just one module because I’d had a few setbacks with tutors and honestly wanted to see where my German actually stood before committing to the full exam.
For preparation, I mainly used ChatGPT and the Projekt C1 book. ChatGPT helped me a lot with correcting my texts, improving grammar and sentence structure, practicing formal emails, and getting comfortable with useful C1-style phrases and connectors. With Projekt C1, I focused on exam-style tasks and getting used to the structure.
What helped me most was honestly repetition. I practiced the same formats again and again until the structure started feeling automatic, instead of trying to memorize overly complicated vocabulary.
My next goal is Sprechen, and after that I’ll work through the other modules step by step.
I’m still learning and definitely have a lot to improve, but this result gave me a really nice confidence boost 🥹
