Support Need help with i3 timed screen lock (i3lock)

I've been using i3 for a long time. I absolutely love it, and have had very little issues with it.

However, one thing has always bothered me, so recently I decided to zero in and solve it once and for all.

I would say that I have a pretty minimal setup; for example I don't use anything like lightdm and use the "startx" command.

I can use this keyboard shortcut no problem to lock the screen:

bindsym Control+$mod+l exec --no-startup-id i3lock --nofork -c 000000

But for the life of me I can't figure out how to lock the screen after a few minutes of inactivity (say 5 minutes for example).

I've tried using the recommended xss-lock command:

exec_always --no-startup-id xss-lock --transfer-sleep-lock -- i3lock --nofork -c 000000

But that has never worked. I did a little more research, and correct me if I'm wrong but I presume the xss-lock command is more associated with systemd (and of course I'm using openrc)?

I tried using the xautolock package like many others have suggested:

exec_always "xautolock -detectsleep -time 5 -locker \"i3lock -c 000000\""

And while it "technically" works, it doesn't respect when video or audio is running. I've also read in places where people have suggested putting the mouse cursor in the corner to avoid this behavior, and if it's not that, it's some other equally annoying "solution" that in the end just doesn't seem worth it.

Like I mentioned earlier, I like to keep things pretty minimal so I'm also not using anything like sleep or suspend. So I'm wondering if there is some kind of simple and efficient solution that I'm not seeing?

Or maybe I should just give up and start getting into the habit more of using the keyboard shortcut whenever I move away from the computer? I've never really used any of the loginctl commands and I'm open to any new ideas (well at least new to me - I've used i3 longer than Gentoo)?

Of course any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Development Simple Linux: a Gentoo live ISO with its own installer and a binhost (early, looking for feedback)

Hi all. I've been building a small Gentoo-based live system with its own installer. It's still early, but it installs and runs, and I'd like feedback from people who know Gentoo better than I do.

What it is: Gentoo underneath (Portage, OpenRC, your own USE flags and overlays still work), but without the first day of the handbook:

Installer in two flavours (TUI and GTK), written in Rust. It handles partitioning, locale/timezone, user, desktop and GPU driver, and a failed install can be resumed.

Prebuilt kernels: the installer detects CPU generation, GPU vendor and laptop/desktop, and copies a matching kernel from a store. I build those with a fragment-based config matrix (kernel-matrix).

Binary install: packages come from Gentoo's binhost plus my own for what it doesn't build (niri, Noctalia, ghostty). A full install with desktop merged 263 packages in a VM with zero compiling (about 15 minutes).

Desktop: niri by default and (Sway , MangoWc , Hypr , dwl in option here) + Noctalia with colours following with the wallpaper, plus ustan (.deb/AppImage/Flatpak/.exe installer) and a Portage GUI/CLI store.

Every installer decision is committed to git in /etc/portage, so "undo" is just git revert.

ISOs are signed, Secure Boot capable (enrol my cert or disable SB), and boot via Ventoy.

What it is not: not a binary distro with its own repo of everything, no LUKS in the installer yet and no planning , no Microsoft-signed Secure Boot, and Secure Boot isn't set up on the installed system.

Honest status: tested in QEMU/KVM (BIOS/UEFI) and on my own hardware a few servers , laptos and desktop. Other machines are untested, so reports of what the verbose boot entry prints on a failing machine would help most. Also, some READMEs (especially gentoo-installer) are outdated. I'm rewriting them this week, so trust simple-linux's README over the others for now.

Repo: https://github.com/tarilka0gg/simple-linux

Installer source: https://github.com/tarilka0gg/gentoo-installer

Would love to hear what you'd change, especially on the binhost/kernel-store approach.

Other than the wiki what other sources would you recommend to learn about Gentoo?
Last night I tried installing Gentoo by following a youtube tutorial alongside the wiki and I have no OS on my system now :) I messed up.

Support Help me please

Hello! I currently have nixos on my laptop but i want to dual boot gentoo. I have the following questions:

1.Should I choose stage 3 hardened glibc sysyemd or stage 3 glibc sysyemd? Bc I think extra security is really something i never saw.

2.How should I configure dual boot and acces my steam games from both distros? I think i will have refind to manage gentoo and Nixos sysyemd boot bc nixos generations dosen t work natively with refind unfortunately. I will have 1 nixos Partition 1 games and files partition and 1 gentoo partition I think.

3.Does KDE plasma work good on Gentoo?

4.My compilation time will be good I think because i have a AMD Ryzen ai 9 hx CPU, right? Are Nvidia proprietary drivers available on gentoo?

5.systemd vs open rc?

I personally used void as my non systemd distro but KDE plasma didn t work and battery life was terrible.

Thank you in advance!

Story Goodbye, gentoo!

I have loved and used gentoo for months now. It was amazing, I loved every second of it. This whole summer I spend tuning and getting used to it, and I feel I learned a lot. But now, I don’t really have much time to tinker with school and all (my chem teacher has killed me 14 times) and I also lowkey somehow accidentally reset every config file to the default in vim (I pressed p) so for the time being I think I’ll try out fedora. I haven’t used a “user-friendly” distro before, as I’ve started with Arch before Gentoo, so I’ll be giving this a try.
This isn’t the end of me though, I will be dual-booting with LFS and slowly working on it when I’m able to. And I will in fact be doing blfs so that I can daily drive it instead, but for now I will just use good ol’ Fedora. Besides I’ve never used GNOME before so that’ll be cool

Support Gentoo not yet beginer.

Hello gentoo community, I am thinking to get into the gentoo Os, the idea of compiling my own software for my specific hardware fascinates me. I am a Linux user from kernel 2.6, I call my self a beginner still,I have only used Linux full time started with Ubuntu, then after fee years I moved to backtrack then archlinux which I have been using from 2007. I use it full time and I have never installed windows in my laptop or desktop PC since windows xp. I am not a gamer and I have never been. Arch real works well for me, I most admit I have also tried openbsd few times but arch is just arch :). Now enough of my history, and back to why gentoo. I have a mini laptop Sony vayo p from 2009, if anyone remember the times before tablets :) I want to try and compile gentoo for this specific hardware. What recommendation do you guys have?

Thanks.

Discussion First dip into Gentoo.

Installed Gentoo on my old steam deck as part of my dipping my toes into homelab/tech upcycling.

I've gotta say I am LOVING openrc. While I don't think systemd is awful or anything, I can kinda understand why openrc users glaze it so much.

I'm really tempted to main it. I think I might get a bit more experience before I take the plunge.

The handbook is really well written. Among the best documentation I've come across.

Discussion Question About eclean-kernel post-remove plugin

Hi all Larry's Fansclub here ,
Im new to Gentoo , and have been diving around the Handbook looking around the reference about Kernel Hooks or maybe call it plugin *.install for post-removing the kernel version. Only found the pre-install and post-install available , which the default available for dracut ugrd efistub uki ukify etc , But im using limine as bootloader and creating the .install plugin for when installing / upgrade kernel the plugin will then automatically install the new entry ( im using ukify to build efi image and put that automatically in the limine.conf ) as fallback i USE efistub in installkernel package.use. My Issue is when removing / delete / uninstall kernel using eclean-kernel it doesn't automatically delete the efistub entry & uki image ( which should be handled by default plugin availalble) or trigger to regenerate the limine.conf ( this part , im sure there's something lacking in my script ) and i want to know what else im missing so the removal can trigger the rebuilding limine.conf when doing kernel removal ( which according Handbook should be triggered by the eclean-kernel or kernel-install )?
Thanks in advance moo

Edit : found the issue why 95-efistub-kernel-bootcfg.install not working , im missing the  app-emulation/virt-firmware

Edit2 : Resolved : modified script/plugin behaviour, for eclean-kernel put the plugin to /etc/kernel/install.d directory

I installed also KDE since it’s what I’m most familiar with, and finally I don’t have bloat in a system. Only installed Firefox and konsole to have a terminal and it’s working fine. Really appreciate the help from yesterday. Maybe one day I’ll overcome the fear and install it as my main system as well.

Screenshot I kept dreaming of a world I thought I'd never see. And then, one day... I got in! First successful install 😎

Been tinkering with Linux since the early 2000s. Never as my main driver but always had at least one old laptop hanging around with one distro or another on it. Tried installing Gentoo a handful of times, but could never quite get it working.

With every big tech company in town soaking up as much of your personal data as they can, I decided enough was enough and the first step in extricating myself from their evil grasp was to get Bill’s ugly code off my daily driver and replace it with something better. And why not Gentoo?

A couple hours and a rockstar or two later and I now have a running system. A lot of things don’t work - no sound output, Bluetooth doesn’t work, etc. so all I’ve got is a GUI and a terminal app, but I couldn’t be happier to figure out how to fix these things and installing only the exact apps I want.

Once everything is up and running smoothly, the next step is to build my own local LLM. Because while I’m not ashamed to admit that ChatGPT is an incredibly powerful tool that I love using, I’m tired of letting Sam use every character I put in there for who knows what purpose. Not to mention the impact that these massive data centers have on the world we live in. And what better system to build that on then one running the big purple G? 😎

Excited to be one of the cool kids now, even if I’m not a kid anymore and not a soul that I know has a clue what Gentoo is 🤣

Support Gentoo / systemd-boot “ TPM extend operation occurred” on boot, system unbootable.

Hi, as above, upon selecting the systemd-boot entry for my Gentoo system from the UEFI, the message above floods the screen, rendering the system unbootable.

Selecting a bootloader on another partition works fine.

It looks like it’s coming from shim here: https://github.com/rhboot/shim/blob/main/tpm.c l112

I have a couple of questions:

1) how do I safely clear the TPM log if this is the issue?

2) how do I prevent this happening again? Is this something I’ve caused?

Thank you!

Tip Quick tip: Building GCC quicker

Normally, Gentoo will bootstrap GCC, which involves building GCC multiple times, incrementally using the previous stage's build to build the next, etc. This is not necessary in most cases for (stage3) end-users, so you can add EXTRA_ECONF+="--disable-bootstrap" for sys-devel/gcc to speed up compilation quite a bit.

On my laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 microprocessor, GCC went from taking over 12 hours to build with the default config, down to only a couple of hours with bootstrapping disabled.

Happy hacking! ~k

Support Can’t find out how to get around the localhost login

Post image
9 Upvotes

I have installed this system 4 times in the last 3 days following everything the wiki shows, and it even boots up without any problems until it gets to the localhost login. At first I didn’t change the name of the localhost in the file in the installation and just entered “localhost” the default one with the password I set up every single time it would prompt me incorrect even though I had used exactly the information I needed the next two installations I changed the localhost name and went with a longer password to see if anything changed. Same thing doesn’t let me login. Login incorrect. I went today and installed it for the last time, again no errors in the installation and the boot up was also flawless, with the only exception that I didn’t put any root password. And still it asked me for a localhost with a password. I am really at my end here, and the only discussion I found in this sub regarding this problem the person just did a mistake and it was explained to them how to fix it, not even in gentoo forums could I find this issue.

I choose openrc and have grub as the bootloader, again booting is perfectly fine and shows no errors starting up everything just that damn login

I really need help guys I’m gonna go insane if this keeps going on. Pls help

Support Not sure why I can't get Gentoo working

I've only been able to install Gentoo once in my time of using it. So far I'm on try number 5 to get a fully working system with XFCE. Last night I tried twice and first time root and user had no directories and other weird things with fs. I think fstab issues. Then second time last night I ended up not being able to do efi and mount correctly. I'm using an Lenovo from 2016 with a 1tb hdd, 8gb ram and a i5-6400. Does Gentoo just hate it and always finds a way to prevent me from getting a full install? The most I got is it to boot lol
