How can I become a Freemason?

First of all, welcome to r/freemasonry! This is a weekly thread for you to ask questions. Being one of the largest online communities on the topic of Freemasonry, we hope that you won't find difficulty getting information you need to decide if you would like to join your local lodge.

General Information:

  1. Requirements for membership vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but generally if you're a man 21 or over (18 or 19 in some states), believe in a Supreme Being, are of good character and reputation, and ask to join, you're eligible.
  2. To get started, email or call a local lodge. They would love to hear from you, every lodge welcomes new candidates. They'll set up a meeting to get to know you a bit (we're careful about who we admit as members). Also to tell you a bit about the fraternity, the lodge, etc.
  3. To find your local lodges, first, find the Grand Lodge website for your state, province, or country. This is a good resource for the US: bessel.org, or just use Google. They should have a way to find out what lodges meet near you. Then check out your local lodge's websites. If you have a choice of lodges, try to pick one that meets on a weeknight that would be convenient for you, and that appears to be active.
  4. Nothing happens quickly in Freemasonry, so it might take awhile to hear back from a lodge after you make contact. Every step takes quite a bit of time.

Have something you want to ask?

My mind is still reeling from the experience, but it was a great one and I'm so glad to have gone through it. I was initiated back in January so I was an EA longer than a lot of brothers (was slacking on my catechism) but I'm really motivated to make it across the finish line now.

Question Help Sourcing a Buddhist VOSL (Ontario,Canada)

• Upvotes

Greetings Brethren,

This December I will be installed into the chair of King Solomon for my lodge. I am looking for assistance in sourcing a leather bound copy of the Dhammapadda that I may take my obligation on. I’ve been looking online but haven’t been able to find anything suitable. I would appreciate any help possible in this matter.

Hi there, just recently acquired this pretty awesome Gonk. Is any able to shed some further light on this thing?

From the limited information I can find, it seems that this may have been made by the late John Whyte.

Thank you!

What's it like to be non-Christian in Freemasonry?

I've applied, had my background check, interviews on the way, vote soon after, looking forward to my journey.

But I am anxious. As I do not follow what would be considered a standard faith. I do believe in God, but beyond that it gets complicated.

If anyone here who has gone down this road and is Pagan, or Muslim, or really any religion that isn't Christian, maybe hearing your experience would help calm my nerves. Or if you have any advice or guidance in navigating this it would be greatly appreciated.

I know this is what I want, I know this is my path, I've been a friend to several local lodges for the last few years and have had many masons ask me when I'll apply so they can finally call me brother. I've been holding back due to this anxiety, but I want to give back. The love and friendship, the enlightenment I've gained from these men has changed me for the better and I want to put into Freemasonry what I've received. So I took the leap.

Please, if you're open to it, share your experience.

Question Changing countries

I was a new MM before I moved from the US to South Korea i had hoped to continue attendance but found the journey to the nearest lodge quite difficult, now I’m in Australia and no longer in good standing as I haven’t paid my dues to my original lodge in little under a years time but wish to start attending my local lodge once I am financially stable again, do any of you have tips on how I can do better next time I move and how best to pay internationally to my old lodge who usually only took check or cash?

Of course it will take some time before I can start paying as moving international is a mission all of its own.

I’am happy to know what difference the craft made in your personal life. I encourage everyone to answer if they want to themselves.

With this I hope we can inspire each other, and inspire new people or members.

Ps: i’am no mason myself, but I have a huge interest in it.

Question Birthday cards?

Is it normal for lodge secretaries to send out birthday cards once a month to those who have birthdays in that month? Or is that just something that happens in my Lodge?

Masons who are heavily involved in appendant bodies, what do you enjoy about your specific organization?

Maybe there is a better way to phrase this, but I became curious after seeing the post for a Shriner discord. Shriners are one example, but I’ve seen plenty of masons who only attend Shrine, Scottish Rite, York Rite (or even just Knights Templar) functions and aren’t involved with their blue lodge at all. I’m not here to shame those brethren in anyway, I’m just curious as to what makes you enjoy those organizations specifically instead of being lightly involved in multiple bodies. I’ve known brethren whose “goal” from the start was to join the Shrine or become a Knight Templar, but reddit is a wider place to poll folks, so I figured I’d get some more varied answers!

Discussion Is this man messaging me claiming to be a Freemason who he says he is?

So, about a month ago this guy claiming to be a Freemason (right hand of the grandmaster specifically) contacted me via WhatsApp trying to recruit me. He had personal information about me (My legal name, my mother's name, etc.) I have contacted the London great lodge to verify this man's identity but I got no reply. I do not know much about Freemasonry, so I decided to post here for help. I will add images in the comments if asked.

Couldn’t find a flair for advice

Help on picking the holy book I will use for initiation

Hello, I frequently look through the subredit I am petitioning to join the fraternity and my belief in god doesn't seem to fit neatly into any specific religion i wad call myself a deist. I was raised catholic through 3rd grade but moved away from Christianity and recently have been studying philosophy and landed on the idea similar to Marcus Aurelius's thoughts on a god like his "logos" but more in the way that I belive that god created the universe but also that in some way he is the universe and life in particular that the creator is the embodiment of order and in my views the ultimate order in the universe is life but that leaves me at a cross roads when joining masonry is that I know I'm allowed to join and have spoken to the secretary and the worshipful master of the lodge (they recommended me and I am on to the investigative body) and they told me that my beliefs qualify to join but I'm left at a crossroads where I don't know what holy book I should use for my initiation and where I should start in looking any help from any brothers who are deists and share similar beliefs and my apologies for any incorrect terminology or anything I am new to masonry and am trying to learn all I can (except anything about the initiation because my uncle who is a masson said to not look into it and just experience it in the moment all I know is that you have to awnser the question "in whom do you place your trust" while blindfolded and to have something prepared because being blindfolded in a place you don't know surrounded by people most of whom you don't know it can be flustering) any help would be appreciated thank you in advance

FAQ Question for Freemasons: Is it appropriate to add an LGBTQ+ symbol to a Masonic jacket?

Hi everyone,

My name is Haider Ali Bajwa, and I'm from Pakistan. I own a small custom clothing business called AshlarCo On Etsy, where we make personalized clothing, including Masonic jackets, blazers, and other embroidered items.

I'm not a Freemason myself, but over time, working on Masonic clothing has made me appreciate the history, meaning, and importance of the symbols used by the fraternity.

Today, I received a message from a customer asking if I could add an LGBTQ+ symbol to a custom Masonic jacket alongside the traditional Masonic emblems.

I have absolutely no problem with the customer's request or personal identity. I believe everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

However, since I'm not a Mason, I'm honestly not sure whether combining these symbols on the same jacket would be considered appropriate within Masonic traditions.

That's why I wanted to ask here before making the jacket.

My questions are:

  • Would you personally see any issue with a Masonic jacket featuring both traditional Masonic emblems and an LGBTQ+ symbol?
  • Is this generally considered a matter of personal choice, or are there particular Masonic customs or guidelines I should be aware of?
  • As a non-Masonic manufacturer, is there anything specific I should avoid when creating personalized Masonic clothing?

I understand that Freemasonry differs between jurisdictions, and I'm not expecting everyone to have the same opinion.

I just want to make sure I'm being respectful to both my customer and the Masonic fraternity.

For me, these aren't just random logos to put on clothing. I understand that Masonic emblems carry meaning for the people who wear them, and I don't want to misuse something I may not fully understand.

I'm not here to advertise my business or start a debate about anyone's identity. I'm genuinely looking for advice from people who understand these traditions better than I do.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts, especially from Masons who have experience with custom lodge clothing or embroidered regalia.

Thank you for your time and guidance.

Cool Masonic Movember!

Post image
45 Upvotes

My brothers! Hope everyone is doing well!

This year, I am the president of my District and had the opportunity to lead our district in a charitable effort.

With the support of the brothers, we agreed to have a Movember campaign which will begin November 1st!

Fundraising for Movember is important because men's health matters. The brothers of the Second Westchester-Putnam District are proud to support an organization that raises awareness and funds for critical issues affecting men, including mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer.

As we know, Freemasonry is a space for men to support men, and this is one meaningful way we can make a difference in the lives of others.

As part of the campaign , I wanted to find additional opportunities to fundraise, so I got some commemorative coins made for our Masonic Movember!

We will also be "double dipping" and having a luncheon at the end of November celebrating those who grew their Mo and fundraise money to sponsor a child to attend Camp Turk next summer!

If anyone is interested in supporting our Masonic Movember, click the link below! https://movember.com/t/2nd-westchester-putnam-district?mc=81
