Discussion Finished your internship/studies and still struggling to land that first role? Read this.

Everyone always talks about landing that first internship, but nobody really prepares you for what happens when the internship wraps up and there’s still no full-time offer on the table.

What are you supposed to do next?

Spend another six months building hypothetical demo apps nobody ever clicks on? Retouch stock photos? Cut dummy video ads that just sit on an external drive collecting digital dust?

Theory, tutorials, and mock projects only carry you so far. Real career traction comes from showing you can deliver under real constraints for real people.

That is exactly why r/FreeForPortfolio exists.

It does not matter if your foundation comes from an internship, self-teaching late at night, or formal school: what matters are the skills you can actually execute right now.

There are countless individuals, small businesses, and community projects out there that genuinely need help:

  • A small business needing a clean landing page or simple website
  • Someone looking for help retouching wedding or event photos
  • A local brand needing a short promotional video ad cut
  • A creator looking for branding, copywriting, or UI design

By stepping in and delivering real-world work for free, you bypass the "need experience to get a job" paradox. You gain live links, concrete case studies, hands-on collaboration experience, and genuine testimonials to put directly on your resume.

Drop an [Offering] post, share what you can do, and let’s grow this community together.

What skill are you looking to sharpen or turn into a real case study right now?

Discussion How to get real hands on experience when nobody is hiring juniors

Building clone projects and tutorial apps will only get you so far on a resume. Employers want to see how you deal with real clients, scope requirements, and deploy live products.

Offering pro bono work to a real business or non profit gives you:

  1. A live link to showcase in interviews
  2. Real world problem solving experience
  3. A reference or testimonial to put on your CV

If you want to bridge the gap between learning and your first paid role, drop a post here offering your skills!

Building free websites for 2-3 organizations/businesses in exchange for portfolio use

Hey everyone,

I am currently getting a web agency off the ground and want to stack my portfolio with a few solid projects. Because of that, I am offering to build websites for 2 to 3 small businesses or non profits in the EU or NA completely free of charge.

I will take care of the design, build, and basic SEO. You only cover your own domain and hosting directly with whatever provider you prefer, so my work will not cost you a dime.

Also, genuinely no pressure or commitment. If we finish and you feel like the end result just is not for you, no hard feelings at all, you do not have to use it. All I am looking for in return is being able to show the work in my portfolio.

Drop me a DM if you are interested or want to bounce an idea
