Teaching myself Freecad to access ancient knowledge
Over the past week I have been teaching myself to use Freecad, and coming from Software like Blender, the leap in logic is substantial.
Why though? A friend of mine, who is an avid Magic the Gathering player and father of three boys, was talking about how he had seen some of his competitors having bespoke deck boxes, and thought they looked awesome.
We talked a bit back and forth about which specs such a box would need to have, so that it could be standing in a living room without risking the cards, and an idea formed.
Having a 3d printer and the wishlist of specs in hand, I checked out the standard platforms to get stl's from, but none of the ones I found matched what we were looking for. Then I realised, this was a great opportunity to get some CAD-chops and started drawing sketches.
This is the result: a fully functional grimoire, that opens on the two hinges of the spine, and is locked by the clasp. It includes a shadow well, so you can see which commander deck is in the grimoire. In the two drawers (that are hidden when looking directly at it from the top) one is a fully functional dice tower and the other one is a card bay for tokens. There is also a shelf for dice on top of the deck, that is designed to lock standard dice in place, when the grimoire is closed.
Pretty stoked about actually managing to finish the design phase of a project like this, and next is on to printing it. Which pit falls do I need to be aware of when exporting it to print?
Also, how did I do?
