Mod Approved Moderator Edits to Sub Wiki

Good evening, all!

Your moderator team is currently engaged in a lengthy process of fairly substantially revising, expanding, and improving our Sub's Wiki (which currently contains many pages that have gone without updates for a decade). We've undertaken this task with several goals in mind, including: improving accuracy; enhancing organization & readability; offering higher quality and expanded information to those new to the hobby; and more.

There's a great deal more work to be done, and we've just started. As examples of our current progress, please see several wholly new pages here, here, and here, and an updated/expanded page here.

As I'm sure you can imagine, this is an incredibly substantial task. We'd love to have input, feedback, and help as we trudge onward. So, for those of you that have any sort of stake in our Wiki:

  1. What would you like to see from our Wiki?
  2. Do you have any feedback concerning our new/revised content?
  3. What advice do you have for structuring and organizing our Wiki?
  4. What currently missing information should we include?
  5. Is there anything else at all you'd like to share, or contribute?

You may have noticed one page linked above includes a pen manufacturer index (similar pages for ink makers, nibmeisters, and terminology are in the works). If you'd like to contribue information to that page—or to any other page—please share your proposed contribution down below, or send us a Modmail. We'd love to hear from you!

All help, including from those of you who'd like to become frequent contributors, is more than welcome (of course, we'll credit you for any content you've created that makes it into the Wiki). We're absolutely trying to make our Wiki a place where high-quality, well-vetted information can flourish.

Thanks, everyone!

ink-of-the-year [VOTES NEEDED] Diamine Ink of the Year Color

Hello everyone,

We've heard quite a wide range of thoughtful feedback regarding the ink swatches posted by u/Nick-Stewart. After reading through much of that feedback -- both positive and critical -- we've decided to conduct a proper poll of the community so we can be sure to produce an ink that gets you excited. Please complete this poll to let us know what ink color you prefer (or, if you don't particularly appreciate any option, and would like to see a bit more from Diamine before making a final call).

Be sure to vote! The decision is very far from finalized, and we're more than willing to work with Diamine to produce some more samples, if the community wills. Thanks everyone!

EDIT: 1,000 responses stats update for the curious: - Don't love any of them: 46.6% - Most prefer option #1: 30% - Most prefer option #3: 10.2% - Most prefer option #2: 8.2%

Pssst -- for the sharp & inquisitive minds among you, take a gander at my message in the comments.

After three decades in the classroom and countless pens and pencils spent in the service, I will now proudly grade dodgy prose in style. The nib is FM (my first) and writes like a dream, excellent feel and feedback.

My first Platinum pen! So happy to have this beauty in my collection ❤️

Just arrived from Japan. Purchased from a lovely seller on Instagram shiba_fountain.pen

This might be one of the most beautiful pens I own. It’s gorgeous, and very elegant, even with the bold pink nib house.

I was actually in Japan last month but I didn’t have any special edition pens in mind at the time. This was announced the day after I left. So happy I was able to secure one.

New Pen Day My first fountain pen as an adult

Post image

I used to write with fountain pens in school but moved to more digital media in the last 10+ years working as a Software Developer. Recently got interested into fountain pens and just bought my first Lamy Safari! Unfortunately got one of those scratchy nibs and almost returned it. Decided to look deeper into it and after a good flush and gently bending the misaligned tines it started working extremely well!

Question This might sound silly, but what do people even write about or use their pens for?

Hear me out, I used to have a job where I was able to frequently use my pens for paperwork, but I'm now in a job where almost everything I do is digital, and I miss being able to use my pens all the time. I tried thinking of something at home or some other way, but I'm not someone writing a book or journals or anything, the most that comes to mind is writing a grocery list or something, but that isn't much use. So, what do y'all actually use your pens for outside of work? Thanks for any ideas y'all can give, appreciate it!

Edit: holy cow y'all, i never thought this post would Garner so many comments, much less pretty much everyone being nice about a question that apparently gets asked somewhat regularly (I'm new to this sub so I didn't know, but everyone being nice instead of snarky about it like some subs can be made a very good first impression of the kind of people that are in here. I thank each and every one of you for giving your personal use cases, definitely has brought up a bunch of uses i hadn't even thought of! I can't keep up with the flow of comments but consider this a blanket thank you, again, for everyone that's participated and commented 🥰

New Ink Day NID

Have been wanting to get my hands on this Pinky Elephant exclusive. I am a little annoyed that I am receiving a glass bottle mailed in a bubble envelope though. The box was pretty smashed & I do like to keep exclusives in their boxes since usually they are decorated different. Thankfully the glass wasn’t broken & my ink was fine, but Pinky Elephant please stop sending inks in bubble mailers!!!

Art I keep coming back to drawing with fountain pens

The friction of my Lamy Safari M nib on the page is a big part of how the drawing comes together. It’s my favourite coffee companion!

State of the Collection I'm sitting here staring at a Montblanc Meisterstuck and an Asvine P100 on my desk. And I cannot help but wish I had $940 cash and the P100 on my desk instead.

This P100 is a really, really nice pen. It writes incredibly well. Its robust. It is VERY well made. The piston system is A1.

I have been using the P100 for 2 weeks now, and it's just a joy to write with. My Montblanc is really nice, but I've had it for 3 years now, and it feels very much like a symbol. I was very proud of myself when I bought it, but I'm at a stage in my life where a pen on my desk that works incredibly well, like the P100, is far more useful and enjoyable to have than the Montblanc.

With the Montblanc, I always had a niggling anxiety about the fact that it never really felt as expensive or nice as the amount I paid for it would suggest it was. But I've never found something that could easily replace it. I have a couple of Pilots, an823 and a 743, which feel like to me like they are worth what I paid for them, but they feel like they occupy a different space for some reason. like... I guess I never thought to compare them to the montblanc because I was stuck in "oh, it's expensive, and the best..." mode when I bought the Meisterstuck.

But this Asvine has just ruined my feelings towards the Montblanc. I know they aren't the same pen... I don't even know if they are competitors, but for me the P100 over the past several days has just immediately made me dislike the Montblanc because it really just shows me how good a $60 pen can be.

Anyways, probably not the worst problem to have, but I thought I would share.

Drawn with a Platinum Balance <EF> and Robert Oster Hemp ink. I haven’t used this one in a while, but was immediately reminded why I love it so much. It makes the most crisp, super fine lines and is incredibly “well balanced”, it feels like an extension of my hand

I got a Rickshaw 6 pen roll. It's now where I keep my favorites except for my Hongdian M2 as that is my EDC pen that I really do not care if it gets scratched and dinged.

Arrived today. Forgive the poor lighting. Not bad for a pen that folks here say is hung up somewhere in customs. Yes, it’s so light it feels like it could float away. Will be using it exclusively for travel, throwing it and an M2 and maybe a rose 3062 in the satchel.

After ordering a faulty Asvine C80S from Amazon, I returned it and decided to buy 2 just to make sure at least one would work. Fortunately both of them write very well ! I have the Blue Glitter in M nib and Purple Swirl in a 1.1 stub.

I also received some Diamine inks from a different order I placed from a local stationery store. All 4 inks are beautiful !

The ink running down the pen over my fingers and the mat. 😂 Inking my Leo with The Raven and I thought or I know I’ll turn it upside down, c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y move the piston up to expel air and then fill some more. I thought it was going splendidly until ink ran over my ringer and I turned the hand holding the pen to see it running down lmao. I told my husband ai was going to be so careful, that way I don’t see patients all day looking like I broke my fingers or something. Oh well. Whatever stays after I showered in the AM just means I have to make up a good story.

Pic is after panic cleaning everything I could, the other hand looks about the same and the back of my fingers and hand is worse haha

Paper! Fountain pens on handmade paper — an unexpectedly beautiful experience.

Recently, I tried writing with my fountain pens on handmade paper, and honestly, I wasn't prepared for how beautiful it would look.

The way the paper absorbs the ink, the little variations in the strokes, and the overall texture make the writing feel completely different.

I tried my PLP (B), Jinhao X159 (M), Endless retractable (M), TWSBI Eco (M), Pilot Metropolitan (M), and Beena (B).

What's fascinating is how each pen seems to express itself differently on the same paper. The broad nibs look especially lovely, and the ink seems to become part of the paper rather than simply sitting on top of it.

It's one of those experiences that reminds you why writing with fountain pens is so special.

Now I'm curious — what papers have surprised you the most with your fountain pens?

New Pen Day Gorgeous new pens and ink!

New pen and ink day! Three gorgeous new pens and a brand new ink I am in love with.

Pictures do not do any of these pens justice. Details in the pictures. Paper is clairefontaine.

I told myself I was skipping the Kaweco Marble Ocean because my luck with marbled pens is atrocious but I took a chance and I am loving the marbling I got on mine!

Neat detail on the Perkeo Iridescent Pearl is the feed is clear! I didn't notice that when I bought it.

BENU continues to have my wallet in a choke hold and I am okay with this. The White Lily is one I've been eying for months and I worked a ton of overtime to get it finally. I think its the prettiest pen I own now.

My obsession with Wearingeul ink is increasing as well. Saw this newly released ink and had to get it for my BENU and Kaweco pen. It's so pretty but so light when it goes down. Thankfully it darkens up a little after it dries. It shows up darker on my cheapo paper too. Which is nice because that's the paper I always take to work.

Thank you for listening to me ramble. I can't wait to ramble at everyone at work tonight!

New Pen Day Visited Amsterdam and fell in love

Post image
149 Upvotes

So I was in Amsterdam this week and visited P. W. Akkerman, a premium stationery store I've been seeing mentioned in Reddit for years. They had pretty much everything I've been seeing in Reddit / Instagram. Paper Republic journals and refills, Travelers Notebooks, all kinds of pens and inks, limited editions of all kind of products, etc... I live in Spain and while I can order most of these things online, I don't have any local stores that have them in stock.

While going through the store I saw this beautiful Kaweco Marbled Ocean and had to buy it. I had seen many pictures of it on this sub and others, but it is just mesmerizing in person.

I'm sooo happy with it!! I've put Diamine Macassar ink in it and use it for sketching in my pocket notebook.

New Pen Day Bought a pen while walking around a department store in Kumamoto, Japan

Had already bought 2 pens on my trip. Wasn’t expecting to get another one. Was walking around the home goods section of a department store. Saw some pens in the lacquer ware section. They were a good price, and decided to get one. They say Maki-e, but I am sure it is silk screened. The pen has a German Schmidt nib on it. Writes nicely. Thought it’d be a good one to add to the collection. The brand is Maejyu which makes standard Japanese lacquer ware.

Accessories Cartridge organization on a budget

Post image
126 Upvotes

I am slowly ‘dipping’ into using bottled inks as I can no longer justify the cost of cartridges but I dislike the converters I’ve tried and have a number of pens I’m fond of, all with travel cases that have a spot for a pen and an extra cartridge. As I continue to clean out the cartridges I’ve saved, I’m sorting the stoppers and the cartridges along with some rubber stoppers repurposed from 510 thread vape pens that fit for a secondary seal. I was thinking about how to organize everything, and found some little boxes that I was able to also able to repurpose and color code with washi tapes.

I have a single pen coming that will be my first piston filler and while I’m looking forward to a new pen I don’t have the money for a much larger ‘collection’ of pens beyond the ones I have. I also like that my pilots con40 sized carts can experience some new ink without additional expense.

This is a slow process, but I’m being very intentional about everything. I really am not interested in anything I can’t easily see inside or clean. These serve me well.

Anyone else that re-uses cartridges, how do you organize them?

Also, are there other people who prefer cartridges to converters for some pens?

Still new to the subreddit but I do believe my very kind and supportive partner is a bit sick of hearing my excited chatter about pens and ink. So.. here I am, hopefully writing in a place where there might be people who are happy to indulge me in my little journey.

New Pen Day Opus 88 Mini & Pilot Kakuno

Thumbnail

Both of my new pens arrived at the same time!! I love a medium nib if you couldn’t tell, haha. I love the weight and feel of the Opus 88 mini; it’s very similar in size to my Uni-ball one. The design of the pen is just breathtaking too, so unbelievably adorable, definitely my cutest pen by far. I HAD to pick up the Kakuno in a medium nib; my first fountain pen was a Kakuno in a fine, and I fell in love, so once I saw the blue glass, I was completely sold; it reminds me a lot of the blue seaglass I used to find on rare occasions when I lived near the beach. Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Budo is the ink used, it looks like I’ll have to hunt down a pretty blue to fully ink them with! If anyone has suggestions, please let me know. ᵕ̈

Paper! Surprising notebook

I was looking for a cheap notebook to do journal and put some thoughts on paper, when I check on this beauty on Tiktok shop. The paper is so good (100 gsm) the ink don't smudge and stain the back of the page.

It came in a 3 piece pack, all for $88.00 MXN , like $5.00 USD.
