Please remember to forage responsibly!
Every year we have posts from old and new foragers who like to share pictures of their bounty! I get just as inspired as all of you to see these pictures. As we go out and find wild foods to eat, please be sure to treat these natural resources gently. But on the other side, please be gentle to other users in this community. Please do not pre-judge their harvests and assume they were irresponsible.
Side note: My moderation policy is mostly hands off and that works in community like this where most everyone is respectful, but what I do not tolerate is assholes and trolls. If you are unable to engage respectfully or the other user is not respectful, please hit the report button rather then engaging with them.
Here is a great article from the Sierra Club on Sustainable Foraging Techniques.
My take-a-ways are this:
- Make sure not to damage the plant or to take so much that it or the ecosystem can't recover.
- Consider that other foragers might come after you so if you take almost all of the edible and only leave a little, they might take the rest.
- Be aware if it is a edible that wild life depends on and only take as much as you can use responsibly.
- Eat the invasives!
Happy foraging everyone!

Cheeky nibble
Yew tree, super toxic sap / needles and eating / chewing the fruit pip is deadly.. but! The flesh on the berries is delightful. Tastes like Fuchsia nectar

Plants Ran out of coffee, Mesquite yo the rescue (kinda)
Like the title says, ran out of coffee and had to improvise. Roasted some mesquite pods in the oven at 350 for 30 mins. After they cooled, into the food processor they went. After being ground, they were sifted and then put into my pour over dripper just like any other real coffee.
No caffeine, so its like drinking a cup of really good decaf, but hey, at least I can still somewhat satisfy the morning ritual until I can get some real coffee later.
I prefer to use this as a coffee extender or to make pour quality coffee taste better, but it does good on its own.

Mushrooms So I heard y'all might enjoy this.
Working a field job and a co-worker pulls a Pippin (mushrooms!) so I headed over to check it out. This is after over half had been claimed. We left alone over 10 bunches just as big on nearby trees.
He made chicken tenders. I made spaghetti.

Mushrooms Super blessed today š
A very quick āspotā check and I was surprised with what I received from my area today. There were a couple of other little heads but I left those. I didnāt even get to the trees that I harvested from last year!! Gotta be at least 3lbs š

Mushrooms, good or bad?
These are coming up all over my front lawn. Is there something happening relative to these mushrooms I should know about? Are they poisonous? Big clusters have grown together and they are sizable individually.

Pull up or cut mushrooms? Turns out science has answered the question! I found this super interesting (and how cute is this "mini mycologist"?!)

Mushrooms Give me your best puffball recipes!!
Went out foraging with a friend today and we certainly found a haulā¦.
Biggest wins were a finding persimmon tree (didnāt get a ton but my friend is planning to make jam!) and a MASSIVE puffball. This is absurdly lucky for us, we donāt go out all that often and are definitely more ācasualā foragers.
After peeling the skin and cutting any bad bits (I was pretty generous with what I cut off, anything Iām not using goes straight to the garden for the critters, so nothing is wasted) I still have all of this. Iāve really never had this much mushroom at once so Iām sort of at a loss as to what to do with it.
Give me your best puffball recipes! Iāve got a ton and am eager to make use of it.

ID Request (country/state in post) First Time Finding Puffball? (Virginia)
Found alongside a walking trail in a park near(ish) a river. Strong mushroom scent upon cutting.
Someone else found some nearby and appears to have bisected them by hand and chosen to leave them, which of course makes me wonder if they noticed something I didn't.
-Can we confirm this is puffball?
-Does it look safe to try a small bit to see how I react?

Mushrooms my first foraged mushroom! a HUGE maitake
this is the first time Iāve been brave enough to eat a mushroom Iāve been 100% certain of the ID. I was 100% certain with some chicken of the woods and pink oysters before but was too scared to try them. this time I was brave and sautĆ©ed a little bit with olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic and served it on pesto! delicious!

Help! Why do my acorns look like this??
Out of over 50 acorns, almost every single one had a black spot, discoloration, or looked like they had had bugs in them despite no apparent holes on the outside of the shell. The last picture shows the ones I think are okay, but I would still like to make sure.

Pecan processing methods?
I just found a whole heap of tiny little pecauns, and I don't have enough patience to crack them by hand.
Does anyone have any faster processing methods than one at a time?
