General Discussion Questions about my Gemeinhard Flute

Hi there. I'm trying to find out more about my Gemeinhard flute. I'm not having much luck. I've had it for a few years. I found the flute at an estate sale and bought it on a whim. I'm a sax & clarinet player usually. A couple years ago I sent it in for a COA and asked the shop if they could identify the model for me but the repair tech who did the work was out the day I picked it up and the counter person had no answers.

I've been on the Gemeinhardt website and my serial number doesn't fit into any of serial number ranges they have listed. Are they generally stamped or engraved with a model number anywhere???

Here's what I do know about the flute:

  • I'm a terrible flute player but it plays easily and with good intonation. The pads & mechanisms are in good shape.
  • open hole
  • Inline G
  • B foot, gizmo key
  • Solid silver headjoint
  • headjoint engraved with
    • On the lip plate side:
      • Gemeinhardt (cursive logo)
      • KGG (cursive script, like a monogram)
      • Elkhart IN USA
      • Custom (in cursive script)
      • near the tenon it's engraved: "SOLID SILVER"
    • On the opposite/back side,
      • just under the crown it's engraved SY51

On the barrel of the flute it has the some of the same engraving as the headjoint, just slightly larger:

  • Gemeinhardt (cursive logo)
  • KGG (cursive script, like a monogram)
  • Elkhart IN USA
  • then a large Roman numeral V
  • then the serial number: 70197x

As far as I can see, there is no other engraving on the flute.

It has a stock Gemeinhardt hard case with nylon zipper cover. When I got the flute it was in very, very clean condition. Both the hard case and cover had nearly no wear. The lining of the case was perfectly clean. The flute does need a good polish now.

Given that I paid next to nothing for it, I'm assuming I got a deal on the flute. I would like to know the model name or number so that when someone asks what kind of flute I have, I can give a simple answer instead of sounding like an idiot and saying that I don't know.

I could post pics but everything is in the description. And you know how hard it is to take decent pictures of shiny things up close.

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Beginning Flute Questions A 40-something Korean guy takes up the flute! #6 | The Moldau

Hi all. I'm a Korean guy in my 40s who picked up the flute as a hobby, and I film my practice sessions as a little diary.

This week was the main theme from Smetana's The Moldau (Vltava). It's only two lines of music, but it took me 23 tries to get through it once, and that only happened at the very end of the session.

A couple of questions:

  1. I almost always fall apart at the same spot: where the melody comes back down to the low E to start the second phrase. Is that more likely a breath problem, a low-register problem, or just focus? How would you practice that transition?

  2. Just out of curiosity: when there's a repeat inside another repeat, how do you tell which starting point to go back to?

Any feedback on tone or posture is welcome too.

(Heads up: the video is edited for fun, with a silly "meditation" effect in the middle and an AI voiceover. The playing is all real.)

Beginning Flute Questions switching student to royal conservatory of music method books- any tips?

(flair isnt super accurate but it was what fit best lol)

hey everyone,

i've at a beginner flute student for about a year and a half now. he's 8, and after about a year and a half of working out of a different beginner method book, his parents and i decided to switch him over to the royal conservatory of music books (at the preparatory level), since its more standardized and its what we're used to. i took rcm piano lessons and exams as a kid, and i worked from the rcm flute books from grades 8-ARCT while preparing for university.

its been a while, and i am no longer doing a flute-focused music degree (i switched from performance to musicology 2 years ago, but i still play!) so i havent taken a lesson (especially an rcm-focused one haha) in a hot second. are there any focus points or teaching methods that are important? is it a good idea to start adding in ear-training/sightreading/musicianship skills? thanks in advance! :)

World Flutes [Bamboo, Bansuri, Celtic, Dizi, Ney, Quena, Xiao] (Xiao) I am unable to play high registers

I have an F xiao. The low-middle registers are okay. But the moment I try to play the high registers, it begins to sound squeaky and airy. Sometimes the sounds from it's middle register also bleeds in so it doesn't sound too clean. I'm completely lost on whether or not I gotta blow harder or how I should position my tongue. Any tips?

My teacher told me to roll out more and put my flute lower and project my sound better, also getting a better tone color

But after i have done so i dont really think my sound has improved and i couldnt reach high notes easily

Also i feel like many of the air didnt go in the flute thus wasting a lot of air and producing air sounds

First clip is my normal playing, second clip is im trying to do what my teacher says

Beginning Flute Questions Flute type recommendation to an amateur

I want to learn a song that is played on a Shinobue Uta 7 holes, but for now i just need to learn the finger positioning, i don't need to have good quality music.

To just learn the finger positioning and the breathing, do i need to have the same type of flute or i can just use a normal flute (a recorder if it's called that way, the one it's used in school)

Buying an Instrument Advice Buying a new flute for beginner

I started playing in January with a Stagg 77-FE I purchased on gumtree for £20. Now moving into the 3rd octave (D above the stave) and it's quite a lot of effort to get the note out so was wondering if it's the flute or me? If I were to upgrade to a better flute, which one should I get as I don't have a massive budget so would be buying used. Thanks

General Discussion Any Toronto people? 🇨🇦t

Any adult flutists with a day job in the Toronto/GTA area looking to make music casually?

I’ve been having a hard time finding people interested in starting casual ensemble work where practice schedules can be flexible and performances can be arranged to match everybody’s schedule for low pressure audiences. Casual, pop up public performances. ? you’d think more people would want to do this as a social thing.

It would be nice to see more working adult or retired adult woodwind players joining this site and connecting: Associated Chamber Music Players (https://acmp.net).

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for the flute sheet music for Cantus - Caravaggio 1. I don't have the knack for transcribing notes myself, but I love the piece so much and wanted to play it with my flute. Unfortunately, I couldn't find it anywhere. Does anyone happen to have the sheet music for this piece?

Beginning Flute Questions Tone

I’m not necessarily a beginner but this is very important to me, I’ve been playing flute for just over a year now and I do well at many things, but I don’t have a very good tone & my notes seem to sound very airy whenever I record myself play.

What are some exercises or just overall tips to achieve a better tone on flute?

Flute & Health Gallbladder surgery recovery as a flute player?

Hi everyone,
My younger sister is 21 years old and has recently been diagnosed with gallstones. Her doctor advised that she may need to have her gallbladder removed because there is a risk of inflammation if it is left untreated.
The timing is a bit difficult because she is a flute player and has an important exam in about two months.
We are trying to understand what recovery is actually like after laparoscopic gallbladder removal, especially for someone who plays a wind instrument.
For those who have had the surgery:
How long did it take until you felt physically normal again?
How long until you were able to do activities that require a lot of breath support / abdominal pressure?
When were you able to play your instrument normally again, especially for longer practice sessions?
Did you experience any problems with breathing deeply or using your abdominal muscles after surgery?
If you are a musician or play a wind instrument, how long did it take before you could perform or practice normally again?
If you had an important exam/performance coming up, how far in advance would you ideally have scheduled the surgery?
The doctors will obviously make the final decision based on her individual situation. We are mainly looking for personal experiences so we can get an idea of what recovery might realistically look like.

Thanks in advance!

Buying an Instrument Advice How much is my flute holding me back?

Hi, I have a Yamaha fl 282, it's my first flute that I got around 4 years ago.
My teacher is saying that an upgrade to a pro model is worth it if I want to participate in auditions and competitions this year, but they're expensive.
How much of a difference would a pro model make?

Meme Pain

I bought a b foot joint open hole key flute 2 days ago as my first flute and had the hopes of self teaching like every other instrument ive touched. I learned the basic chromatic scale so far but this is the most torture ive ever endured in my entire life and ive imagined child birth before (i have a very good imagination). Is a teacher really worth it if I was able to learn the scale my self? Or should I keep practicing alone?
