Medical Marijuana Program Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade desperately need more competition in the cannabis market.
I feel like South Florida has some of the most frustrating options in the state when it comes to finding consistently good flower. We have plenty of dispensaries, but having a bunch of locations owned by the same major companies isn’t the same thing as having real competition.
Florida’s vertical integration (VI) system is a huge part of the problem. The same companies control cultivation, processing, and retail, and patients are largely stuck shopping within a market dominated by these vertically integrated operators. More dispensaries don’t necessarily mean better medicine when the market lacks enough independent competition.
I’m tired of seeing people argue over THC percentages, terpene percentages, genetics, and expensive branded drops while the actual quality of the flower is all over the place. Properly grown, harvested, dried, and cured cannabis should be the bare minimum, not something patients have to hunt for.
There are patients who need consistent, effective medicine, but too much of what I’ve tried in this program has been disappointing. Flower can look amazing on the outside and still lack the flavor, effects, and overall quality you’d expect. Meanwhile, patients are paying premium prices for products that don’t always deliver.
We need more independent operators, smaller craft cultivators, and a market where companies actually have to compete on quality instead of branding. Give smaller growers a legitimate path into the market. Make it easier for new businesses to compete. Let patients choose from genuinely different cultivation styles instead of watching the same major players dominate the shelves.
I’m not saying every small grower automatically produces better cannabis or that every MSO puts out bad flower. I’m saying the current structure doesn’t give patients enough meaningful choices, and adding more locations for existing operators isn’t going to fix that by itself.
Look at the cannabis markets where independent growers and smaller craft operations have a chance to compete. Patients deserve access to that kind of diversity and quality, too.
What do you guys think? Would opening up Florida’s market to more independent cultivators actually improve the quality of medicine available in Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade? Or are we just going to keep getting more dispensaries without seeing meaningful improvements in the flower?
