Competition Masterpost 🇭🇺CS Budapest Trophy Master Post

It's the last challenger before the Grand Prix starts!! This week, we are traveling to Budapest. For the men, Kevin Aymoz is making his international season debut, Lukas Britschgi is in the mix, and Daniel Grassl gets in one last competition before the GP. The list of men is long and notable!

For Women, there are 37 competitors.... So it'll be a long, fun few days of watching. Notable competitors here are Maddie Schizas, Kimmy Repond, Julia Sauter, Sophie Jolie von Felton, and Olga Mikutina. There has been some movement with the AIN athletes, but currently Alina Gorbacheva is the only one listed on the official ISU website.

No pairs here this weekend, but the ice dance field is just as packed as the men and women with 23 entries. The Taschlers are getting in another competition and will be joined by Smart/Dieck and Bratti/Somerville.

Going to be a big week in Budapest! And that's without really detailing the juniors, of which there are several as well, with 29 entries for Women and 22 Ice Dance entries.

News Team Ukraine’s main rink has been damaged by Russian missiles

The Shalett ice rink located in Kyiv was badly damaged by a Russian attack last night. This is one of the few rinks in Ukraine that can support high level figure skating training. A smaller ice rink located in a mall was also damaged in the attack. Skaters that have used the Shalett rink include: Ivan Shmuratko, Anastasia Arkhipova, Ivan Khobta and Violetta Serova. I have included Shmuratko’s post about the attack. This is not the first time Ukrainian sports facilities have been used as a military target by Russians.

Russian Skating Kamila Valieva will fight for a neutral status

Participant of the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, European champion (2022) Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva will fight for neutral status after returning to the group to coach Eteri Tutberidze. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the source.

Today it became known that 20-year-old Valieva moved from the group of coach Svetlana Sokolovskaya back to Eteri Tutberidze, whose group she left in April 2025.

In September 2026, the International Skating Union (ISU) deprived Valieva of its neutral status, having received which, Russian figure skaters have the opportunity to perform at tournaments under the auspices of the organization in the 2026/2027 season. In October, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed that it had not received an appeal from Valieva against the ISU decision.

Sofia Muravieva had only been practicing her free skate a week before the GP Kazan

I have a new program to Sia. I've been practicing it for a week. We choreographed it a week and a half ago. My mom made me a costume in three days. It's now one of my favorite costumes. Nikita Mikhailov choreographed my free program. I'm really grateful he found the time to work with me. I skated it poorly, didn't show it in its entirety, but I really like it, and it's now one of my favorite programs, actually.

"My legs and arms were shaking in the short program. My suboptimal, even poor, form took its toll on me in the free skate. No matter how hard I tried, I felt tired, my legs sagged. I had no expectations, I just tried. It was so nice to feel the fans' support. It took me a long time to decide to continue competing, and my closest people helped me. It certainly wasn't me who helped myself, but my loved ones."

This interview is filled with gems!!!

His off-season including his advocacy at the ISU Congress, his health, his opinions regarding online harassment, fans and media, ISU rule changes, and of course on his new programs and choreography. He also mentions Diana Stellato-Dudek and Alysa Liu and talks a bit on the influences he’s received from each of them as well. There are more, but the best part for me is how he felt after the competition today.

Such a lovely interview by Tony Wheeler! "Everybody in the sport loves you," yes indeed!

Skating Advice Joined a club but I feel unwelcome

I (20F) recently joined a figure skating club at a local university in my city. Because I am a student at a neighboring university instead of the university the club is run through, I am kind of the odd one out in the club. I’ve at least made a friend there though and have had great conversations with a lot of fellow club members! However, the university is known for being pretty exclusive, as it’s an ivy league.

I knew the sign up process for the me might be different since I am from a different university whereas almost if not everyone else in the club is from the hosting university, so I showed up early on the first practice just in case. The president arrived soon after me and told me I wasn’t allowed to join the club because I am not a student at their university. I thought that sounded strange, as on the ice rink’s website as well as all the google registration forms it says there are members from other neighboring universities and list an option to check “student from neighboring university”. As I was taking my skates off to leave I met a person (who is now my friend) who was shocked when I told them I had just been rejected for going to a neighboring university. She said she also saw online that they accept other students and even sent me screenshots so I had proof after the fact.

I went home and did some digging myself into the rules and as far as I understood, I was only ineligible to be on the university’s competition team, but would be fine to skate with them recreationally, as many students from neighboring universities have in the past.

I came to the next meeting and the president unfortunately wasn’t there, however everyone else who was there told me that I’m definitely allowed to join and not to worry about it! So I went ahead and registered on the google form and paid my dues with no issues.

So the main issue is that I signed up to be a part of the club’s annual winter show (a recreational activity) and was casted in one of the group numbers. The group number I’m in has weekly off-ice rehearsals in one of the university’s gyms, which have strict access guidelines. Basically, you need an ID from that specific university to get in. When I emailed to ask how I can get into the gym and if someone could maybe make arrangements or give me a guest pass since I’m a club member from a neighboring university, they replied “We’re so sorry, you need to be a club member to participate in the show.” But I am a club member???

Additionally, I signed up to get lessons from fellow club members, and in the form it states “non-[university-name] emails will not be matched with a coach”. I put a note in the form explaining my situation as well as checking the box that says “student from neighboring university”. I have still not been matched with a coach and it’s been weeks. I’m worried it’s because I didn’t have a student email for their university.

The first winter show rehearsal is tomorrow night and I’m praying the university will let me in the gym, as the club hasn’t responded to me since the last email. I feel like the club is kind of shutting me out because I go to a different school. I’m nervous to contact the university campus recreation because the lines are sort of blurred between the competition team and recreational club, and the club is completely student run. What do I do???

TL;DR: I joined a college figure skating club as a student from a neighboring college and am being shut out. What do I do?

EDIT: I should also mention that I’ve been attending club ice/meetings at the rink every week for the past month with no issue. As an adult skater who has only been skating for a little less than a year, this whole situation has been really discouraging and frustrating.

Question Is there any point to having a single entry in the Grand Prix series?

I know that some skaters only get one entry, so it’s impossible for them to get into the Final. Is there any point to this beyond the obvious (prestige, competition experience, medals, visibility)? Like do points from a Grand Prix event count more towards world standings? Does doing well in a GP event make them more likely to get invited to 2 events next season?
