Well, I never thought I’d be making this post, but as I’m rapidly approaching my 30th in the next few months I figure let’s see what happens!
The TL;DR is: I have many acquaintances I’m polite with and on friendly terms with, but no real “close/best” friends and I’m actively looking to change that, the sort of people you hang out with multiple times a week, do activities together with etc. Ideally around my age and in central Fife, but you know what I’m open minded.
Longer version:
Really I’m looking for someone who we can say hey “let’s make an effort with each other” and see what happens. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I’m desperately “lonely” because I’ve always been quite weird in that I like my time alone, but at the same time definitely some close friends/human connection would be nice as I leave my 20s. I always feel like I’m imposing asking people if they’d like to hang out.
I’ve tried in the past to go to various clubs, groups etc and although I enjoy them, and build up more acquaintances I’m far too awkward to jump to the “let’s be friends” and meet outside this scheduled weekly interaction, I don’t do ambiguity, or new introductions well so I’d rather just cut the crap and make intentions clear from the outset and try to make sure someone is on the same page kinda.
In terms of what I’m in to, honestly I’m a homebody, I like board games, watching TV, playing games on my computer (occasionally the ps5), I like going to see films but I’m very much not a film critic, I’m one of those people who will watch a film everyone says was rubbish and say “yeah that was ok, entertaining way to spend a few hours” rather than critique the directors intention. I am into DIY, making things, programming, solving puzzles - anything that requires me to engage my brain is always fun - probably my programmer career that has done that to me!
I am absolutely not a fitness freak, I can be convinced for the occasional walk or hike, but running, jogging, gyms, rock climbing, parkrun etc - all the usual stuff people recommend I do not have the fitness or patience for. I wouldn’t be opposed to taking part with someone but not immediately for sure. Board game clubs and societies too, I'd definitely like to take part in some, but I really don't like starting new activities, meeting loads of people etc, so I'd rather go with someone once we already get on, if that makes sense? Hopefully something that transcends a fixed weekly activity.
If you can’t tell by the immensely detailed wall of text, I’m both autistic (vaguely maskable) and ADHD (absolutely not maskable).
If you’re wondering how I got into this situation, of having absolutely 0 close friends or a best friend, or if you’re trying to gauge if I’m a massive red flag of a human, honestly who knows! I’ll leave my thoughts on it here so you can decide yourself.
I went to uni 10 years ago, made a lot of friends with those I lived with and went to societies with, but elected to drop out and pursue a career instead, I was really career focussed, moved away, had a mild break down stress wise and honestly probably wasn’t the best at keeping in touch with people. Time moved on and my friendship circle got smaller and smaller until after COVID destroyed any remaining social life I had, only a few remained, and I ended up making the decision to step away from those for reasons that were tricky, but I’m comfortable I made the right decision. I have tried to reach out to uni friends etc, old friends but I can’t help but feel everyone has moved on, has new friendship groups etc and isn’t really in the mood to widen the circle, which hurts - but I get it!
If any of that sounds like you, even if you're 50/50, please, feel free to drop me a DM - happy to start chatting and to just figure something out to see if it leads anywhere
