POLITICS Students from North Carolina A&T can be seen marching back to their HBCU after voting on the first day of early voting in the state. The Guilford County Board of Elections voted to remove the school’s on-campus polling site. (video via Todd Simmons)

Yep the gop has tried really hard to take away voting from college students. Glad to see this!

Being told you can't do something that's your right is basically the ultimate motivation. Especially for young people.

In Florida students won't be able to vote with a student ID starting January 2027.

In Florida, everyone needs to request vote-by-mail. Gives you time to research your specific ballot. And no need to show ID. If the signature on the envelope is in question, then the voter receives a phone call to confirm the votes.

My daughter is a freshman at UNC but spending her first semester abroad (Global Launch). We went and visited her last weekend and her biggest request was that we brought her vote-by-mail ballot (she's a Florida resident). After researching each candidate/judge/amendment she filled that bad boy out and there isn't a hint of red on her ballot. Sealed, signed by her and soon to be personally be delivered by me to the early voting station (Oct 19). She personally voted in the primaries before she left as well. 18yrs old. So proud of her. And pretty proud of myself for instilling the importance of voting to her and her friends.

NC's Republicans are so afraid of their gerrymander falling apart they took authority over elections away from the governor (Democrat) and gave it to the state auditor (Republican) and then it came out that someone in the state board of elections office was texting Republican county board of elections people telling them how to vote and what to say in meetings. A&T lost their polling site, but another university managed to retain theirs when they "compromised" and put two early voting sites less than a mile apart - one on campus and one at the remote county rec center that has no sidewalk access from campus down four lane highway.

u/kyrimasan 2h ago
NC State University also lost their voting site at Talley Student Union. It's disgusting how badly their are trying to screw college students.
47
u/nomnomsquirrel 2h ago
I think WCU only got theirs back because the leaked texts were specifically about their Health Sciences Center polling site, with Dallas Woodhouse feeding some county board member BS about parking and accessibility being inadequate despite the fact it was the county COVID vaccination site and ran completely smoothly.
11
u/kyrimasan 2h ago
The reasoning they gave to remove the NCSU site was also the parking and accessibility bullshit.
1
u/liminalgrocerystores 42m ago
Yeah parking near Tally sucks but let's totally forget the thousands of kids that live walking distance and the completely free bus system
8
u/Madame_Jarvary 2h ago
Knowing WCU, the admin was also behind that shitty idea. I say that as an alumni,

New Hampshire Republicans have also tried to make it harder for students to vote for years now. New Hampshire House Speaker William O'Brien admitted in a campaign event that the reason was because of "kids coming out of the schools and basically doing what I did when I was a kid, which is voting as a liberal": https://truthout.org/articles/new-hampshire-gop-speaker-discourages-students-from-voting-because-they-ll-vote-liberal/

Edit: whoops, I thought I was commenting on r/NorthCarolina. I stand by my comment and hope voters consider the special needs population
Y’all please go if you can and let your voices be heard and raise your concerns! I have been to many protests but unfortunately I cannot attend tomorrow because of my job working to support people with special needs.
And even if you don’t go to a protest, please keep people with special needs in mind when voting. The GOP does not want to support them and consistently cuts funding for them. Most people with special needs do not have access to voting as a way to advocate for themselves.

HEY, HOLY SHIT, that’s my town!!! And to boot— NC At&T is celebrating their centennial homecoming later this month and it is going to be absolutely amazing. For the uninitiated: it’s called GHOE (Greatest Homecoming On Earth) and that’s an absolute FACT. Google that shit and watch celebrities weigh in it you don’t believe me. I’m a [UNC-CH] Tar Heel born and bred, but our homecoming ain’t got SHIT on our Aggies.
To add on another layer of how fucked up this situation is: I check the PO Box for my job 5 days a week, just up the fucking road from A&T (I work downtown). And they removed the (outside) Mail Drop boxes last year maybe, and everyone threw a fit because that particular location ALSO locks the damned doors around 7pm most days and weekends and blames it on the homeless population. As in, if I go into work on a Sunday, I am physically unable to stop by and check the PO Box or o have to circle the block to figure out where they put the damned drop boxes for my check runs. They DID put SOME of the external drop boxes back very recently, but moved them to another location on the other side of the building and there are only TWO now.
Why is this relevant? I’ll tell you!! Because my JOB depends on how quickly the mail travels and it is all but impossible to even guess… or find a fucking mailbox? at this point. (Mail in voting only works if you can find a mailbox)
Also a fun fact: Louis DeJoy (the ex postmaster general) is FROM GREENSBORO.
And yet another fun fact, but very likely NOT A COINCIDENCE: The International Civil Rights Museum is located in Greensboro as well— hard stop, read: Woolworth’s Sit In, Feb 1, 1960.
This is not an accident. THIS IS A CRIME.
Edit— xoxo, signed: a middle aged white lady who does NOT have the patience for bad faith arguments. Come at me if you feel like it, but I promise I’ll light your ass on fire for shits and giggles.

I opened Reddit and saw this and just assumed I was looking at the gso or northcarolina subreddit, was stoked to see it was Fauxmoi! I'm glad you pointed out the Civil Rights museum - the sit-in in Feb 1, 1960 was A&T students!

No need, my love. Spend it on a local business that needs it instead, or the time to encourage people to vote. I wish I could say “we’re all in this together” but if that were the case, this wouldn’t be a headline. It’s up to us to do what we can even if it might fall on deaf ears— we still have to TRY. But then again, who am I to talk? I’m commenting from my bed 35 minutes away and it’s easy to talk shit from your bed.

6
u/Musical_Xena 2h ago
It feels so shortsighted as a strategy for the GOP to make it hard for the youth to vote. The youth don't remain youthful forever, and college is such a formative time. They're making a cohort of people who are pissed about restrictions to voting access, want to vote, and are likely to vote against the party that tried to prevent their vote.
Like, maaaaaybe they win one more election because of this. Or they even lose this one, because they energized a base that might not have cared as much before. A base of people who can peer pressure their friends into voting as part of a whole social event.
6
u/Trans__Scientist 2h ago
Every single one of them should be awarded with a scholarship. Send a message to college students around the country that this is how it's done. Literally. Seriously. Right now.

A friend voted early today in NC and said the last time they did early voting there was only one other car, today the lot was so full there was a line to take the next available parking spot.
This is typically a very strong indicator of the house’s opposition having a strong turnout. For midterms, this is exceptional.
