FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Aaron Sorkin weirdly sexualized Frances Haugen and Mikey Madison in ‘The Social Reckoning’

It’s a weird choice, but within the context of the film it’s nonsensical. Madison’s character is a shut-in who has to wear arm and leg warmers due to her celiac disease. She also is perpetually unable to find a date. Why would she even own these dresses?

And when she does go on a date, she dresses in a nicer version of what she wears to work, not this

Aaron Sorkin only understands women in relation to men's desire. It's a constant feature of his work. And I say that as someone who really loves some of his work.

Interesting. That's exactly i can't stand his work

It has worn thin, but I really loved the stuff he wrote when I was young.

I’m with you. I loved his work when I was young and I think you have to have lived through all that to sort of get it.

I enjoyed this movie more than most, but as someone from the same era -> all I could think watching was it really only "made sense" within the "Sorkin reality".
Throughout, I kept thinking of a variation on the Zach Woods Office season 8 line about South Korean soaps -> "Oh yeah, you're gonna want to have a [Sorkin] fetish. It'll be pretty upsetting if you don't."

She wasn’t “unable” to find a date, she specifically chose not to try to date in the movie aside from the one scene, where she was appalled by the guy and his super bro-ish ways (which was fair). But the decision to make the outfits part of her character felt very unnecessary to the story. Could’ve gone with wigs if it were about being recognized.

Casting a 26 year old to play a 39 year old was the first red flag. She doesn't look like her.

why can’t we cast people that are like marginally the approximate age of their role 😭 it’s either teenagers played by 25 y/os or 40 year olds played by 25 y/os. is there a shortage of actors outside of their mid-20s ??

Yes, exactly! I think Taylor Schilling would’ve been great in the role. She’s closer in age to Frances and looks a lot more like her imo!

I can't help but think of Rachel McAdams being cast to play journalist Sacha Pfeiffer in the movie Spotlight. In real life, Pfeiffer was around 30 yrs old during the time covered by the movie and McAdams was around 35 during filming. And they didn't sexualize her character at all in the film. Her wardrobe included the same unflattering khakis as the rest of the male journalists wore haha.

Hey can’t men directors be normal about Mikey Madison

I guess Anora set the stage for how Mikey is going to be boxed in and how she is going to be portrayed.

quentin tarantino set the stage by murdering her in one of the most violent ways ive seen on screen

three members of the mansen cult break into stuntman trained brad pitt's house and he and his dog kill them in cartoonishly evil ways. mikey madison gets mauled by a dog, shatters through a glass door, gets set on fire, and drowns in a pool while screaming bloody murder the whole time.

what… the fuck? Sorry I asked 😭

its like a three minute long scene set to her wails. she doesnt stop the whole time from what i remember, its been a while but i remember commenting on how long she was screaming for. pretty brutal for a character who had a handful of lines

After what happened to Sharon Tate and the others at Cielo Dr. I loved seeing an alt-universe where their murderers were brutally murdered instead.

Sorkin has always been a misogynist. Go back and watch The West Wing; the dude fucking despises women.

CJ works since Allison Janey is such a strong actor and doesn’t take shit. Every other woman is shown as varying degrees of idiots to serve the men in their lives, so they can be corrected by the end of the episode (even Stockard Channing as Abby Bartlet was treated horribly by the writers).

I fear for her career after Anora. She’s going to be fighting off that sexualization for a while. It’s hard to break out of that.

It's sad how per post-Oscar career is panning out. It was either Star Wars, or Social Reckoning which is turning out to be a "between a rock and a hard place" situation. It's looking rough.
Someone said somewhere that Inde Navarette has stolen Mikey's thunder after Obsession, which has provided me with A LOT of food for thought

It's a little strange how a few people are trying to create tension between these actresses when there is none. Mikey's Anora performance was phenomenal. I can't imagine a future where she *doesn't* have a long and successful acting career. And she is still so young and going to get better. And I'm really interested to see what Navarette does next. She has huge potential.

Aaron Sorkin writes women as props, exposition vectors, audience surrogates.
He wrote CJ Craig in The West Wing (whose character has a Masters from UC Berkeley) as unable to understand the census. He's a trash writer.

and Mikey Madison expressed in interviews that she was frustrated with Sorkin's vision for her character and felt she couldn't explore the role or collaborate. must've been a stark contrast after having worked with Sean Baker

Didn’t she even say Sorkin told her not to be authentic to the person? And she said she hopes to do a biography that’s authentic in the future?

Maybe it’s the lack of David Fincher, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, maybe it’s the lack of Jesse Eisenberg who I think was perfect as Zuck, maybe it’s my general feeling about Zuckerberg being a bin tier individual but my excitement for this movie is low despite being a HUGE fan of The Social Network.

Just here to say that Sorkin's hacky libwhiteguybullshit has long been plotted in the BillMaher-ChrisNolan sector of :fart noise:
