I saw it today, and just... Wow. What in the actual fucking fuck?!? Also, for some strange reason, you'll see a full frontal... courtesy of her husband 😵‍💫

It is ~3 hours long, and I left the theater with a massive headache. 🤯

Edit: the MOVIE is 3 hours, not the appendage 😂 but.... 🤔 go measure it, yourself!

u/LawsPolarTang 8h ago

I never saw anyone measure a weiner in hours before.

😂😂😂😂 good one. Leave me alone, I'm tired. The comment stays.

u/_-4twenty-_ 8h ago

The ride is measured in minutes.

You’re welcome for that mental image.

u/SpiffyNrfHrdr 8h ago

Measure in seconds and hope for triple digits.

I haven’t laughed this hard in a while, thank you!

u/maverick4002 8h ago

How was the frontal? Lol

At some points during the movie, you're definitely going to find yourself saying "Oh wow, what a dick!" Sooo, good foreshadowing, on the director's part. 🤭🫣

u/up_scumbag who the fuck is Bill Maher 7h ago

Meh.

u/Fantastic-Ad-5486 8h ago

Why did you get a headache?

You'll start to question yourself, and it becomes evident how she was able to trick those people. It starts as one thing, and completely transforms into something else. You may even find yourself rooting for Elizabeth at one point.

You could see the toll it took on Nathan, and how draining the entire process became. You feel like you're right there, going though this whole thing with him.

Not looking forward to the backlash to this. I'm seeing way way way too many posts on various pop culture/movie related subreddits about how it is so highly rated and everything. It's going to have a huge pushback because of it, the discourse is gonna get so annoying. In particular I think the narrative will be that it is too kind to Holmes (which imo isn't true, but it trusts the audience to understand how manipulative she is, which I think a lot of the general population won't get). I hope I'm wrong though

u/PaleontologistNo5420 8h ago

I’ve enjoyed the discourse I’ve seen so far!! I walked out of that theater really grappling with the human capacity to lie. How often do we lie to others? To ourselves? Fascinating stuff. One of the greatest films I’ve ever seen

u/picklethefreak chris pine’s flip phone 8h ago

I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm wondering if it requires the media literacy similarly needed to understand why Fielder including fMRI in Rehearsal S2 and the quack lady from CARD who helped him w/quid pro quo were not people who were helping him learn more about autism or himself

35

u/alexgst 7h ago

Two things can be true at once.

  • He included them to highlight the immensely cynical transactional nature of these sorts of situations.
  • It’s more interesting to the overall story for this to be present. It helps build the character.

Media literacy isn’t just about understanding the motivations behind the author/writer/etc. It’s also understanding that a story can be multi-faceted - having multiple complex meanings and motivations. Nothing is ever truly a binary.

hey I agree with you - not sure how you took away from my comment I do not understand this lol

Movie of the year. Endlessly fascinating. Try to avoid learning anything about it before seeing it.

u/Fungo Peter Thiel’s Antichrist 9h ago

I am going to cringe my way right into another dimension. I will be in absolute physical and mental agony. And I cannot fucking wait for this

57

u/zero-if-west 8h ago

The awkward was 11/10. I loved it.

28

u/ratta_tat1 where was slutzilla when the Westfold fell? 8h ago

I saw it last night. Believe the hype! I audibly gasped several times which is rare for me.

110

u/gerardolsd 8h ago

I love Letterboxd and Boeing Pilot Captain Nathan Fielder but as an elder millennial it’s crazy all these gen-z kids have not rated anything above 4.7 in the entire history of cinema available on that site lol

28

u/lareinevert unspeakable ineligible imprisoned coup plotter 8h ago

It’ll settle.

97

u/laureng0423 women’s wrongs activist 9h ago

God I can’t freaking wait to watch this

92

u/zero-if-west 8h ago

I saw it last night and loved it. Recommend seeing it in a packed theater and DO NOT read any reviews/spoilers.

25

u/bam__margiela 8h ago

Would spoilers really ruin it? Given we pretty much know what happens to Holmes in the end

39

u/zero-if-west 8h ago

The movie has some big surprises. I wouldn't read any reviews/spoilers if you can avoid them.

22

u/IngmarHerzog They tell me to turn my weird movies off 7h ago

You should absolutely go in knowing as little as possible so you can be surprised at all the unexpected directions it goes in. I suspect it will still play great knowing the stuff that happens but you should preserve the chance to have that “holy shit! Fucking WHAT?!” experience for yourself.

19

u/29kk 7h ago

if by "in the end" you mean you know she goes to prison...maybe a spoiler but that is not the end of the film

2

u/lareinevert unspeakable ineligible imprisoned coup plotter 8h ago

Unfortunately scrolling through Twitter I briefly saw a name who I think may be [redacted]. At least I don’t know what their role is in the movie yet.

34

u/Cutthroatchorus 8h ago

Seeing it tonight and feeling a level of almost unbearable, vibrating excitement akin to being six years old on Christmas eve.

19

u/up_scumbag who the fuck is Bill Maher 7h ago

Just got home from seeing it and I'm excited for you! Try not to hydrate too much, it's worth it not having to get up for the 3 hours.

6

u/Cutthroatchorus 4h ago

That is absolutely the plan 🤝 you get me

1

u/considerlilies 6m ago

I went when the actress and nathan entered the beach house and my background knowledge of the rehearsal meant that I didn't miss any very important context for the subsequent scenes. sad that I had to miss anything but it's a long ass movie and I was about to explode

1

u/up_scumbag who the fuck is Bill Maher 1m ago

Sometimes you gotta go! I tried to be strategic this time and it worked out.

One of my jobs has been at a single-screen movie theater and they would run the sound from the movie in the bathrooms sometimes. It was a nice touch.

1

u/chase_what_matters 4m ago

“Vibrating”

Interesting word choice.

34

u/decline_inline 7h ago

Just back from seeing and, it cannot be repeated, but if you can go into this movie as cold as possible DO SO.

When [REDACTED] shows up it goes into the stratosphere

4

u/scout-finch 5h ago

Do I have know much about her story? I only know the very high level info that she lied about the blood tests to get a huge amount of funding for a project that didn’t exist.

9

u/Anywhere-Due 4h ago

That’s all you really need to know for context

2

u/zozo1099 4h ago

I would recommend watching the hbo documentary or 60 minutes episode, then also watching the dropout, but you will still enjoy it even if you don’t watch those and just have the basic info.

1

u/SadavirofRivia (derogatory) 24m ago

That’s fair enough, for people who like those twists and surprises! As a weirdo who hates suspense and likes spoilers so I can actually engage with the movie (or book), I couldn’t bear it 😭 (edit, I mean, even the idea of being that tense means I can’t bear to see the movie)

1

u/chase_what_matters 2m ago

I went in knowing the bare minimum about EH, never having seen a doc or the Hulu show. Redacted was so good I was left wondering if all of that was scripted. It was like high drama mixed with reality tv messiness. I couldn’t believe what was happening.

31

u/Final-Read-3589 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 8h ago

We in the UK ain’t getting it for over a month 😢

Edit: also have NEVER seen a theater this packed for a documentary film

It’s that good

12

u/SuperCrappyFuntime 8h ago

I want to see this so bad, but it's not playing anywhere near me.

11

u/up_scumbag who the fuck is Bill Maher 7h ago

Time to move! 🩷

8

u/_thiccems 7h ago

I’m not surprised, Nathan Fielder is a fucking genius. Confirmed after watching the second season of the Rehearsal. I can’t wait to see it!

8

u/orcas_eating_cookies 7h ago

It only has 23k reviews so far. The numbers could shift a bit if another order of magnitude of viewers add ratings. Exciting though!!

8

u/snailhelper 7h ago

I can’t wait to see this. I just adore the gall of Elizabeth Holmes, I’ve watched and listened to every journalistic piece on her. I enjoy the artifice of the low voice and the Steve Jobs outfit and the green juice. She’s a fascinating curio. Adding Nathan Fielder to the mix is going to go hard.

8

u/Majestic_Click_8524 6h ago

It might win Oscar's for best doc, best film, and best actress.

6

u/terracottatown OPEN THE SCHOOLS 7h ago

My husband and I have been counting down the days till we see this and we are finally seeing it tonight. We are too seated.

6

u/booksncoffeeplease 6h ago

I saw the HBO documentary when it first came out, but I've pretty much forgotten everything. I also never got around to seeing The Dropout. Should I watch them before I see the movie?

8

u/Anywhere-Due 4h ago

You don’t need anything more than a basic background on Holmes going into this. If you’d like to prep to watch the doc, The Dropout is a good reference point

3

u/yuefairchild if you add testicles, that's extra 6h ago

Just The Dropout.

4

u/sjwise 6h ago

It’s the best thing I’ve ever watched

2

u/Pelican_Hook my bandwidth for cowardly grown men grows thinner with each day 2h ago

RELEASE MOVIES ON THE SAME DATE IN THE UK AS YOU DO IN THE US YOU COWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2

u/missdanielleloves 3h ago

Saw it this morning, I genuinely think the reviews are downplaying it, it is so hard to believe that was all real.

2

u/lacepersimmon 3h ago

I watched it last night and pregamed before it. It is LONG.

2

u/Hmlaa 1h ago

Just got home from my local showing!! I was sat the entire 3 hours. Bursting from the large icee I guzzled during the first 1/3.

1

u/azphodelle 8h ago

Damn idk if I've ever seen a movie rated above 3.5 on letterboxd

15

u/lareinevert unspeakable ineligible imprisoned coup plotter 8h ago

What really? There are tons of movies above a 4.0.

6

u/azphodelle 8h ago

I guess I'm looking at trash lol

1

u/Doxxxxxxxxxxx 7h ago

I bought tickets but my theater is closed 🫩

1

u/impeccabletim how would i know? i can’t legally tell you 😏 6h ago

It was so good. I need to watch it again.

1

u/chowonies Thanks, u frog build looking bitch 4h ago

deserved, the movie was absolutely fantastic

1

u/Low_Kitchen_9995 19m ago

Drove an hour to the closest showing today. It was PACKED. We were all so enthralled. It’s an incredible experience with the fellow movie goers.

You will be like that meme were the cartoon dude leans forward in his chair at least 4Xs. Minimum.

Strangers in the crowd were turning to each other like “oh my god!”

People laughing, gasping. Everyone was talking after and out to the lobby.

It is so well done.

1

u/BigSur15 17m ago

Did anyone else think it was too much like The Rehearsal? And/or frustrated by the lack of conclusions?
