TRIGGER WARNING Ms. Rachel: "My heart is with the children, families and everyone who works at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. This is an unimaginable nightmare.
Grown ups argue about what to do to keep kids safe at school - stricter gun control or better mental health services - we need to stop arguing & do both - people say it might not work but what if it does? Why not try everything possible to keep our precious kids safe? We owe it to our children.
It’s our responsibility to keep kids safe. 💔 How can we just keep continuing to fail them?"

People joke about her running for president. I don’t want her to but I would love someone as brave as her. As intelligent as her. Someone who understands children and humanity as much as she does.

I don’t see any issue with it, so long as she could pick competent people to lead the various departments under her.
People also love the “for the kids” messaging

I mean really that’s the most important part of any leader. Being able to put the right people in charge of things. You don’t have to be the best at everything.

It's good she's talking about school shootings because I feel like it barely makes the US news anymore.

Mainstream news is incentivized to frame these events as “mental health issues” as if it somehow is more palatable for the public to believe while we continue to deny mass swaths of Americans access to health care.

This one got a tiny bit of bonus press because it had the youngest school shooting death in American history (one of the victims was five years old) but unfortunately it still hasn't been a very big story. Americans don't even seem to care anymore.

Ms. Rachel has acknowledged and spoken about more tragedies than the orange dimwit has in both terms thus far

Got downvoted into oblivion by gun nuts because I pointed out their rambo fantasies aren't worth the lives of children, and that every other country has gun control and is jsut fine.

My frustration with the "It's a mental health problem, not a gun problem" crowd is that they consistently vote for a political party that also guts mental health services/spending. At least let us put the mental health hypothesis to the test.

In 1998, Kip Kinkle shot up Thurston high school in Oregon, killing 2 people and injuring 25 more. I remember sitting in my 6th grade class, with my teacher who had just left the Thurston school system and moved to my middle school. I vividly remember her sitting on a stool at the front of the class, openly weeping. She talked about how she knew the students involved, and how if any of us ever felt like we were in a bad situation, that she would help us. It was so impactful. Back in 1998, we thought it was a one off...and then the next year Columbine happened.
How many fucking kids have to die? How many families have to be forever changed? I live an hour outside of Bend, and the way the community is taking care of these families is beautiful, but it shouldn't have to happen in the first place. Three minutes inside of a school with a gun, and so many lives are forever changed.

i always wonder why we don't try both. the concern is that something bad will happen if we have stricter gun laws and more mental health services... but something bad is already happening. why don't we try new-to-us strategies and see if anything improves?

Progressives that demand disarmament in the face of an authoritarian takeover are interesting folks.
