Sonic's CEO talked about what went wrong with the network and what comes next

I watched Matt Visser's recent interview with Ran Neuner, and a few things stood out.

One of the biggest takeaways was that Sonic's problems weren't necessarily technical. According to Matt, the network had strong engineering but lacked proper management, a clear business strategy, and a sustainable revenue model.

Here are some of the more interesting points:

  • Financial situation: Matt says Sonic has enough resources to operate for at least another couple of years. The team has been cutting expenses, selling some assets, and trying to reduce its burn rate.
  • New direction: Sonic is focusing on payments, FX, AI agents, prediction markets, and tokenized real-world assets. The idea is to work with existing businesses rather than relying entirely on attracting crypto users.
  • Technology: Sonic's Carmen database technology could potentially be licensed to other projects, creating revenue beyond network fees.
  • Ecosystem: Some original Fantom developers have reportedly started discussions about returning with updated versions of their protocols.
  • Tokenomics: Matt criticized the previous approach of minting tokens to fund business development. The new direction is to avoid discretionary minting while maintaining validator rewards. An independent token audit has also been completed.
  • Performance: Interestingly, Matt said he doesn't personally hold $S. His argument is that management should be judged by business revenue rather than short-term token price movements.

He also mentioned that December should be an important checkpoint for evaluating commercial progress.

Of course, most of this is still a plan. Cutting expenses and changing strategy are one thing. Actually bringing in customers and generating sustainable revenue is another.

I'm curious what others think.

Can Sonic realistically transition from a DeFi-focused blockchain into infrastructure used by traditional businesses, or is the competition already too far ahead?

Sonic Labs is putting more emphasis on three areas that could make its progress easier to measure during quieter market conditions: user retention, business revenue, and greater transparency around $S supply.
