Season 1: The Beginning of the Legacy
Chapter 8 — The Limits of Power
The morning breeze swept across the mountains as Prince, Maria, and Veylen gathered at the training ground.
After yesterday's practical exercise beyond the training ground, the three children were eager to discover what Master O had prepared for them next.
Prince arrived carrying his wooden sword, swinging it casually over his shoulder.
"I hope today's lesson is more challenging than yesterday's."
Maria glanced at him. "You nearly slipped on a rock yesterday."
"That was one time!"
"Twice," Veylen corrected.
Prince turned toward him in disbelief. "You're supposed to be on my side!"
"I'm on the side of the truth."
Before Prince could argue, Master O emerged from the base with his staff.
"You're all in a lively mood this morning."
"We're ready for today's lesson!" Prince declared.
"Good. Put your sword away, because today we're discussing something more important than how hard you can strike."
Prince reluctantly placed his wooden sword beside the training equipment.
Master O walked toward the center of the clearing.
"Tell me, what do you think happens when someone gains power they cannot control?"
"They might hurt themselves," Maria answered.
"They might hurt other people," Veylen added.
Prince thought for a moment. "Or they might waste their power by using it at the wrong time."
Master O nodded.
"All three answers are correct. Power is useful, but power without control can become a weakness."
He pointed toward three wooden targets arranged at different distances.
"Today, I want each of you to complete a simple exercise. Your goal is to strike your assigned target without disturbing the others."
Prince smiled confidently.
"That sounds easy."
Master O gave him a knowing look.
"Then you shouldn't have any trouble following the instructions."
Prince went first.
He stood several steps away from his target, gripping a small training weapon. He studied the distance, adjusted his stance, and prepared to strike.
Then he swung.
The wooden weapon struck the target, but the force sent it tumbling sideways into another target.
Prince stared at the result.
"That wasn't supposed to happen."
"What happened?" Maria asked.
"I hit the target."
"You also knocked over the other one."
"But I hit the target!"
Master O approached him.
"You focused entirely on striking your target. You didn't consider how much force you needed or what might happen afterward."
Prince frowned.
"So I should use less strength?"
"Not necessarily. You should use the amount of strength the situation requires."
Prince looked at the targets again.
He returned to his starting position and tried once more.
This time, he adjusted his stance and controlled his movement. His strike landed cleanly, and the target remained in place.
He turned toward Master O.
"Better?"
"Much better."
Prince smiled, satisfied with his progress.
Maria was next.
Her exercise required her to move a small wooden block from one marked position to another without disturbing the objects surrounding it.
She studied the arrangement carefully before beginning.
At first, she moved the block slowly, keeping it balanced as she guided it across the ground.
However, when she tried to move it faster, the block shifted sideways and knocked against another object.
Maria immediately stopped.
"I moved too quickly."
"Why do you think that happened?" Master O asked.
"I concentrated on reaching the destination instead of paying attention to the block's movement."
"Exactly. Speed is useful, but precision matters just as much."
Maria took a breath and tried again.
She focused on the block's position, making small adjustments instead of forcing it toward the destination.
This time, she completed the exercise successfully.
Master O nodded.
"Remember that patience doesn't mean doing nothing. Sometimes, it means making the right adjustment at the right moment."
Maria carefully returned the block to its original position.
"I understand."
Finally, it was Veylen's turn.
Master O placed several small markers around the training ground and instructed him to move between them using his natural agility and quick movements.
Veylen studied the arrangement.
"I need to reach every marker without losing my balance or colliding with anything."
"Correct," Master O replied. "Begin when you're ready."
Veylen moved toward the first marker, then changed direction toward the second.
His movements were cautious and controlled. He reached the third marker successfully, but hesitated when he noticed how quickly the remaining route turned around a large rock.
He stopped to reconsider his approach.
"You can take your time," Master O reminded him.
Veylen changed his route, choosing a wider turn instead of attempting a sharp maneuver.
He completed the remaining markers without difficulty.
When he returned, Prince gave him a thumbs-up.
"Nice work!"
Veylen smiled.
"I thought rushing would make me faster, but I would've made a mistake if I'd forced that turn."
Master O nodded.
"Knowing your limits is not the same as being weak. It allows you to understand what you can do safely and what you still need to improve."
---
After all three exercises were complete, Master O gathered the children together.
"You each approached your challenges differently. Prince relied on force, Maria concentrated on precision, and Veylen took time to consider his movements."
Prince folded his arms.
"Are you saying none of us did everything perfectly?"
"I'm saying that each of you has strengths, and each of you has something to learn."
Maria looked at the targets.
"Then we need to understand not only what we can do, but also when and how to do it."
"Precisely," Master O replied.
Veylen looked toward the mountains beyond the training ground.
"Will there be situations where controlling our abilities isn't enough?"
"There will always be challenges that require more than one skill," Master O said. "Sometimes, you will need strength. Sometimes, patience. And sometimes, the wisest decision will be to step back and reconsider."
Prince picked up his wooden sword.
"Then I'll keep training until I can control every movement."
"And I'll keep practicing until I can make better decisions," Maria added.
Veylen nodded.
"I'll work on trusting my judgment without hesitating too much."
Master O smiled at their determination.
"Good. But don't mistake today's lesson for the end of your training. Understanding a principle is only the beginning. Applying it consistently takes practice."
Prince raised his sword.
"Then let's practice!"
Maria laughed. "You really can't wait, can you?"
"Not when there's something new to learn!"
Veylen shook his head, smiling.
Master O watched them return to their exercises.
The children were still inexperienced, but they were beginning to recognize that becoming stronger required more than improving their physical abilities. They needed discipline, judgment, and the willingness to learn from their mistakes.
Those qualities would become increasingly important as their world grew larger beyond the mountains.
For now, their training continued under Master O's watchful eye.
And each day brought them another step closer to understanding the true limits of their abilities.
