Pictty: a free GPL-3.0 image viewer for Mac with Lanczos redraw, RAW/HDR, pixel loupe and clipping warnings
If you check your photos on a Mac, you've probably seen this. You zoom in to judge sharpness or noise, and you can't tell whether the softness is in the file or comes from the viewer's scaling. Then you open another app to see the histogram, and a third one to compare two exports.
Pictty is a native image viewer for the Mac that tries to handle all of that in one place. It's free and open source under GPL-3.0. Version 1.0 needs macOS 15 or later.
On scaling: it uses the GPU while you pinch and pan. When you stop, it redraws the picture with Lanczos, one picture pixel to one screen pixel. Shrinking is done in linear light, and enlarging up to 300% also uses Lanczos. Pictures are colour-managed for your display's profile.
On formats: it opens anything macOS can read. That includes camera RAW from hundreds of cameras, developed with Apple's RAW engine, and HDR (gain maps, PQ, HLG). It also opens JPEG, HEIC, AVIF, JPEG XL, WebP, PNG, TIFF, GIF, OpenEXR, PSD and SVG. Panoramas wider than the GPU's 16,384-pixel limit still show every real pixel at 100% and beyond.
For inspecting:
- Hold Option for a loupe with exact pixel values and the hex colour. Option-click copies it.
- Press I for the information panel: histogram, camera and exposure data, size, colour profile and where the file came from.
- Press J for clipping warnings. Blown highlights show in red and crushed shadows in blue.
For comparing: you can put up to four pictures side by side, stacked or in a grid, with pan and zoom kept in sync. For two pictures there are also wipe and blink modes.
You can set it as the app that opens pictures when you double-click them in Finder. It's only a viewer, so it doesn't edit or organize photos.

A question for people here who use FOSS tools: when you compare edits or check RAW files, what do you still have to switch apps for? And which formats or inspection tools would you want a viewer like this to handle better?
