**READ THE RULES**
Things have been getting a bit out of control lately.
I definitely am somewhat to blame for that - I'm the only mod here, and I don't check out this sub as often as I should.
However, it's important to note, once again, that this is a PUBLIC FORUM. That means ANYBODY - the job, the media, civilians, kids looking for more information about becoming a firefighter, etc, can all see what is posted here.
This is not the kitchen table at the firehouse. Treat this subreddit like you would treat a civilian you're giving a tour of the firehouse to. The job has its issues, like every single other job out there - would you spend that tour badmouthing the department to that civilian? Would you insult that civilian if they asked what you thought was a "bad" question about the job, how to get on, or what is expected of a firefighter?
The majority of people in this sub are people on the list, waiting to be called. To everybody who is on the job now - we were ALL in their shoes at one point, and we were all itching to get as much information we could regarding when we could get on the greatest job on Earth and what we could expect. The jobs unwritten rules are not intuitive - you learn by messing up, and every single person on this job has messed up at some point. Remember that before you insult someone.
To everyone who is waiting to be called - the members that are on here are giving you advice on their own time, out of the goodness of their hearts, to help you out. Every person has had a different experience on this job, and so you're going to hear a lot of different advice, and it may not be the advice you were expecting or want to hear. Sometimes things don't translate well online - don't always assume the worst. Being rude and dismissive is not a trait that will serve you well in this department.
Please, utilize the "report" button for any post or comment that breaks the rules. If someone posts something insulting, demeaning, or degrading, do not feed the troll. Report, and move on. I will (eventually) get to it.
The FDNY is the GREATEST Fire Department in the world. You are ALWAYS representing the Fire Department, and this is unique to this job. Your friend who is an accountant doesn't always represent their accounting firm, your sister-in-law whose a librarian doesn't always represent her library, and your father-in-law whose a plumber doesn't always represent their plumbing business, but when you say you are a New York City firefighter, people will always associate you (and your actions) with the FDNY. We all knew this going in, and if you didn't, then here's your heads up. Be a member that people look up to, not a member that people shake their head at.
Stay safe.

New FDNY website ot track incidents
Good evening, folks,
I've been working on a project for quite a bit! It's like NYC Firewire but 100% automatic/automated, and it takes in community feedback with the up/downvotes. Good way to see who has what going on.
The website is free, makes no money, no ad revenue, etc... just a buff website.
Would like to get feedback on it!
It's an LLM that is currently learning transcription and FDNY houses/procedures too so it becomes "smart".

Firefighter Mental Health Documentary
tickets.docnyc.netHello! A documentary I helped make is premiering in New York on November 12th, and I wanted to share it with this community. Two of my good friends are FDNY, who were both a big source of inspiration for making the film.
Synopsis: Fire Capt. Rob Christensen has spent decades saving lives, fighting blazes, and losing colleagues as he valiantly serves his Idaho community. Under immense mental strain, he undergoes experimental ketamine-assisted therapy to treat his post-traumatic stress disorder, assuage his spirit, and connect with his teenage daughter.
We made this film for the people who do this work, and we'd love to have firefighters and first responders in the room. After the screening, the filmmaker and film's participants, including Capt. Rob Christensen and Cpl. Kevin Holtry, will hold a moderated panel at a nearby venue open for all attendees.
We'd love to see you there.

Videos to learn basics?
Was curious if anyone has any good videos to help learn the basics instead of reading? Think it works better for my learning type to just have on while working, let me know if anyone has any good youtube channels to check out etc!

Balancing Higher Education With a Fire Service Career
Hi all,
I’d like to hear from FDNY members who've pursued a degree while on the job, whether a BA/BS, MA/MS, JD, PhD, or something else.
•When did you decide to go for it? As a probie, or later in your career?
•Did you find scholarships or other funding? Did your department or another organization help cover tuition?
•What did your schedule look like, and how did you balance classes with shifts, overtime, and life at home?
Thanks in advance. I appreciate any stories (or tips) you're willing to share.

What happens if I don’t go to a deposition as a former employee?
No longer working for the city, but 4 years ago while an EMT a patient fell while walking into the ambulance and is suing. I knew this already but now they are asking me to attend a virtual deposition and saying if I’m not free I have to take off work. What kind of power do I have here? This is all pretty frustrating but I don’t want to get into any kind of legal trouble.
Is it over for me?
27 years old, turning 29 in early 2028. I scored 92 on exam 4044, didn’t establish residency. Assuming that’s a wash.
Is it possible that EMS does a promote exam in 2027?
Not planning to join the military.
If it’s over I can accept that, I’m curious over people’s opinions of rewarding careers similar to FDNY. I’m interested in Nursing and am almost finished with the prerequisites to go into nursing school.

Son of FDNY hero who died on 9/11 sues city after age cutoff keeps him from following dad’s footsteps
What's everyone's thoughts on this, do you think his lawsuit will be successful?
Adhd meds
I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Vyvanse. Before I start taking the meds, does anyone know what the process with BHS is and if it could cause any issues.

Fire Patrol
Hey everyone, I’ve recently been looking into the history of the New York Fire Patrol, and one question that came up for me was about their relationship with the FDNY. Were Fire Patrol members respected the same way as FDNY firefighters, or were they sometimes looked down on?
Also currently, do you think there would still be a need or purpose for something like the Fire Patrol, or has that role become outdated?

Place for patches from other departments/agencies
I’m a wildland firefighter who recently moved to NYC. Unsure if the structure world has the same customs, but in wildland it’s common practice to leave a sticker/patch/memento of your crew when you visit a fatality fire site as a way of honoring the fallen and committing to learn from their sacrifice.
Is there a place in NYC where other departments leave patches in a commemorative space? Feel like just leaving my patch on the WTC would be frowned upon and I want to do this respectfully

Approaching the 25th anniversary of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor – looking for stories/perspectives from the floor
Hey everyone,
With us having just passed the 25th anniversary of 9/11, it got me thinking about another anniversary coming up. This November marks 25 years since the crash of American Airlines Flight 587.
For a quick refresher, Flight 587 was an Airbus A300—roughly the same size as the 767s from the WTC attacks—departing JFK for Santo Domingo on November 12, 2001. It went down in Belle Harbor, Queens, killing all 260 people on board and 5 people on the ground in their homes.
Even though it was determined to be an accident rather than terrorism, I can only imagine how heavy and raw it must have felt for the city for a widebody jet to crash into a neighborhood just two months after 9/11.
I know the firehouse in Elmhurst, Queens, had already lost two members at the WTC, and they ended up being the first responders to the scene in Belle Harbor.
If anyone here was on the job back then, or has stories passed down about responding to that incident, I'd be interested to hear what it was like working through that period.
Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts, and stay safe.

Historical Archives, Photos, Etc
Good evening everyone, looking for some insight on how I could look into finding some historical info on a family member who was FDNY in the 60s-80s I reached out to the museum last year but didn’t get anywhere unfortunately.
They were involved with the telephone exchange fire, E33, and just looking to find out more about their time on the force and maybe some other info.
I would love to ask them but unfortunately they passed away about 20 years ago.
Thanks for any and all insight

My kid loves fire trucks and firefighter stuff. If the station doors are open is it ok to pop our heads in and say hi, or would that be interfering too much? He’s a very excitable kid and quite a ham. Not sure if this matters but the stations nearest us are around 3rd and E 101st and 2nd and 112th

Immediate Post 9/11 state of FDNY
UK Firefighter here.
The recent anniversary of 9/11 got me thinking about the 343 FDNY FFs lost on 9/11 and I guess I’m just trying to wrap my head around how the FDNY continued to operate in the days/weeks after the attack?
Like I appreciate a lot of the city was paralysed for a few days, but surely people still burn food and crash cars, smell gas etc, so how did the FDNY operate post attack and with a huge loss of personnel?
No disrespect meant, no angle or story to twist. Just genuinely curious.

Changes to FDNY Z-51 written exam for Refrigeration License post July 1st
Hey everyone, I'm a Local 94 Helper here in NYC and was wondering if anyone took the new Z-51 written exam after July 1 for the Refrigeration license, wanted to know how much of a difference if at all it is from the past exam.
