Should I transfer from a chill sortation center to a fulfillment center for full-time hours?
I currently work at an Amazon sortation center where I recently got my blue badge and make around $24.50/hour, working roughly 25–30 hours a week depending on how much they flex us up or down. The job itself is honestly super easy and laid-back. I work inbound almost exclusively, unloading trailers, loading packages onto the belt, and occasionally handling non-conveyable items. There’s a decent amount of downtime, the environment is social, and overall it’s a pretty chill place to work. It’s so chill here I can disappear and go to the bathroom for 30 minutes to an hour even without getting in trouble (do this often). The downside is that full-time opportunities here are extremely rare, and I’d really like to get 40 hours a week consistently. I recently became eligible to transfer to a fulfillment center that’s only about 7 miles from my house, compared to the 17 miles I currently drive, and they’re offering full-time hours. The position would be ship dock at what I’ve heard is a robotic facility. My biggest concern is that the workload could be significantly harder and more physically demanding than what I’m doing now. I’m trying to figure out whether the guaranteed hours and shorter commute are worth potentially giving up a much easier work environment. There are also a few minor reasons I’d consider leaving, including some awkwardness with a couple of coworkers, but that’s not really the main factor. For anyone who’s worked ship dock at a robotic fulfillment center, how physically demanding is it compared to inbound at a sortation center? Would you make the switch for full-time hours, or would you stay at the easier building and wait for a full-time opportunity?
