Analyzing The Rainbow Room

In this scene many viewers wonder what LeeLee's character whispers to Tom's, but I wonder why the interior door to the room the asian businessmen were in had 2 locks that lock from inside the main room. It looks like a separate wig-fitting lounge of some sort, but if someone managed to break into the Rainbow Room, they would be able to unlock this lounge. It could be a simple plot device to keep the businessmen locked up until the police arrive, but I can't see Kubrick being that simple. If the businessmen could exit out of an unseen exit in that little room, then burglars could enter that room the same way. Some people would overanalyze the scene and ask why the taxi driver didn't signal his right-turn at the beginning of the scene, so I don't feel too bad asking this question.

A little weird but hey..might be?

The color of the strippers clothing which bill Harford sees first is violet

VIBGYOR? From the rainbow

And then maybe we can trace the color progression throughout the film?

Nick Nightingale Spoiler

I’ve always watched Kubrick’s films. Great fan. Today, after years of knowing I needed to watch it, I finally watched ‘Eyes Wide Shut.’ Watched it all the way through and won’t rewatch until a couple more days but wow. What a film. What stood at the forefront of my mind, among other things, throughout the entire film was how much of a “bro” Nick seemed like. All things considered I know I sound naive and more than a bit oblivious to the whole film but I can’t help but think he was good. He presented a novel avenue for Bill, which he wanted, and at the end of the day it was Bill’s choice to do so.

I just want to focus on Nick’s presence at the moment, nothing else. Bill hadn’t seen him for years after a concrete life style career choice they both chose. He ran into him in such a coincidental manner. I know this is the crux of Bill’s issues. However, I like to think Nick opened up an avenue for Bill to get to see what he had never seen. In this manner that’s what a “friend” could do. It’s your choice to go down that path or not. He highlighted an opportunity to open Bill’s eyes and unfortunately Bill went full steam ahead. But I don’t know though. *shrug*

Nick’s presence is proper enigmatic. Was he the catalyst to Bill’s choices? Was Bill always like that? What happened to Nick and why was he in NY? Out of all places…

First party, NeoEpstein, Alice walks through the door and ...

Long time watcher, long time reader, long time poster here ...

The previous post's insight into the first party had me rewatch it.

In particular, I was looking at the blackground actors in the first part. Yes, obviously, there is the whole theory with the guys who (maybe) take Helena at the end, but also there is another theory that the first party itself starts with old guys dancing with old ladies, then there is a transition, and old guys are dancing with younger girls. I wanted to check it. And, of course, there is the epstein-looking guy, which I take with a grain of salt, as the movie came out in 1999, and the guy looks more like Epstein in 2018. (There is a picture of Epstein in a tux from 1999 at the top of this article - https://news.sky.com/story/all-you-need-to-know-about-jeffrey-epstein-court-documents-being-unsealed-from-today-13040790 - there is some resemblance)

ANYHOW

What I found really interesting is what happens after the musicians announce a break. Everyone is going to the right - like everyone. A couple of women in the middle foreground are being, apparently, pushed or guided by the men behind them, all in the same direction. Alice suddenly announces she needs to go to the bathroom. NeoEpstein is with a woman, sometimes called a young woman, though zooming in and looking carefully I'd say early 30's. While Bill and Alice talk, the camera is looking straight at them. When NeoEpstein passes, youngWoman looks back, and Alice looks at her (first image). It could be a look of recognition, or of fear (second image). Bill doesn't notice and is off to talk to his buddy; Alice moves to the right and the camera suddenly moves with them, quickly.

When the scene ends we next see Alice walking through double doors, with NeoEpstein behind and someone who might be called NeoMaxwell in the middle on the right. (Picture 3) Alice has one glass of wine. The next time we see her, she is already drunk.

Many people here have pointed out it is odd, where did YoungWoman go, was Kubrik trying to signal something?

I wonder.

The entire first party is 17:07 of running time. Given that for most of hat time we are following two different stories (bill is here, alice there), that means 10 to 12 minutes of time at the party.

Of course they stayed longer than 12 minutes. Simple politeness would have them stay more like an hour, much more if they were actually enjoying themselves. Unless we say party number one is a dream (there is some weird freudian lighting), we need the alcohol to have time to get into Alice's system and get her drunk. I think she's proper enough to not be drinking in the car on the way over.

EWS came out in 1999. Pulp Fiction came out in 1994, and did both Temporal Ellipsis (skipping time, where the runtime is shorter than the elapsed time of the characters) but also non-linear chronology - actually putting scenes in the movie out of order of how they occurred for the character in Diegentic time (the time the characters would have experienced if it were the real world.)

This is what I am wondering: What appears to us as a simple scene transition, with Alice walking through a doorway then appearing on the other side - what if it isn't? What if she recognizes the woman and it is some sort of sex scene? There would have been members of the cult here -- she drinks to forget it.

One indicator that time passed, and this is a real weak one - but when bill is talking to nick nightingale, and we have the "how are you buddy" / "you haven't changed a bit" dialogue, toward the end, you'll see NeoEpstein at right. If he just walked through the door, he can't be there. Unless the time-splicing for the cast is experienced differently than the audience. Of course that is weak, he might just be an extra, they did a million takes, etc, etc.

Still ...

I'm getting a lot out of watching backgrounds at the first party.

That said, I'm wondering -

WHERE DID THIS GUY AND HIS LADY GO? (At Left)

They dance into the door and just disappear.

One interpretation is the first party is a dream.

Is there a better one?

The party scene (first time watcher)

I've been hearing for many years that EWS was great, or that it was garbage. Finally started watching it last night.

Early in the movie, at the party, both spouses are flirted with by other partygoers. What I couldn't understand was the characters' bizarre body language. The two models flirting with Bill are absolutely WRITHING--it is so weird and exaggerated--no one moves like that. Meanwhile Alice, dancing with the Hungarian, is making faces like a porn star in a third-rate sex scene. Every time he speaks to her, there is a long pause when she makes an I'm-pretending-to-have-an-orgasm face before answering. She's also doing weird, unnatural body movement.

I've read many reviews and never seen anyone comment on this. I found it very unpleasant to watch. I thought it must mean something, but I had no idea what.

HI? First post

Hi. I just finished watching Eyes Wide Shut and I've been thinking about a specific scene where Alice was sleeping and Bill's mask was on the pillow beside her. I noticed the shadow of the mask changed visibily: in the first picture it almost looks demonic while in the second one it resembles a human's shadow. Do you think it was just the light or it was on purpose? :)

I can't seem to understand the whole concept of Eyes Wide Shut.

I watched the entire movie and I just don't know why it has the hype, it basically looks like a blue film, also I'm sure that there is a completely different context that I'm missing here, but the more I read about it, the more I don't understand it.

Some say the reason Bill got caught by those elites is because- it was basically a dream and in the dream he knows the truth that he doesn't belong there, was it all a dream?

I don't understand why his wife tells him about the fantasies she had about another guy, like was she soo much into the drug effect that she lost control, or why did she say it on purpose?

I've also read that the husband basically wanted to cheat on his wife but he couldn't bring himself to do that. But he literally had changes to cheat, and he kind of pulls away, it shows that he is loyal so why did he get that name?

Also ALSo ALSO, why does Bill keep seeing some sights of his wife with the naval guy? Like he has these sudden flashes of a sex scene in bits and pieces right, is it because now he doesn't see his wife as a pure and sacred being or smtg else?

Then when he goes to a store to buy the costume, there's this girl who is in a room with 2 Japanese men - what does that have to do with the story? I understand that her father lets her daughter have sex with these guys for money, but what is the girl's role here? some say that she knows what costume to wear because she knows those customers who come to the store before the ritual.

And then there is this girl in the very beginning of the film who kind of passes out and Bill is called for help by an old guy(Who ), I can't understand what that scene is trying to convey.

And then there is this same old guy in the last scenes who tells Bill that he knows what happened at the ritual coz he was there too, why was he in the ritual, and what so they get out of it?

Also, what exactly are they doing in that ritual?

How did the girl in the mask (girl in the ritual who selects this guy) know that he doesn't belong there? And even if she knew for some reason, why was she soo concered about him?

Also, how did that mask show up on the bed beside his wife? And why does he just start telling her the truth right after seeing the mask? After telling her everything, even the wife cries, but bro I'm crying now.

And then even the wife says that she had a bad dream, why was this guy feeling soo sad about it, I feel like a kid for not understanding anything, but really, this movie has the name that it the OG, but like fr I don't get it..😭

I know that some of the scenes were deleted from this movie, so maybe I'm missing a few connections but I really wanna know the whole concept of this movie..

Pls enlighten me..

"KNOCK, KNOCK"

The Matrix Revolutions": "Is it over?" "Y, game over!")

Torna a casa!!"

References to other films

While Kubrick draws parallels with various films, I will focus on those whose plots involve themes of power, high society, cults, secret societies, and dishonesty within relationships.

Some interesting examples include:

True Lies (1994), in which an agent from a top-secret agency hides his true profession from his wife, leading her to believe he is a computer salesman. Their lives change when he discovers she is also seeking excitement, and both end up involved in a mission against nuclear terrorists. Both films feature dance scenes that include the exchange: "Do you like the period? I adore it."

In The Ninth Gate (1999), the protagonist is an unscrupulous rare-book expert hired to examine copies of a book supposedly co-authored by the Devil; he discovers a high-society congregation of devotees awaiting the Devil's manifestation. Many scenes set at St. Martin's Castle are reminiscent of Somerton. Interestingly, the French pronunciation of "St. Martin" sounds similar to "Somerton." Both films feature a scene where a car arrives at a location marked by a sign in the woods bearing the name of the respective mansion. In The Ninth Gate, the red car turns into the lane and then drives away. In Eyes Wide Shut, when Bill arrives by car during the day, a red car is seen passing him, heading in the opposite direction and driving away.

In Half Moon Street (1986), a brilliant intellectual begins leading a double life, working secretly for a high-end escort agency, and finds herself trapped in a dangerous game of conspiracy and international tension. There is a scene where she meets with a client and a waiter; the two Japanese actors involved are the same ones who appear in the scene with Milich's daughter in Eyes Wide Shut.

In Rosemary's Baby, a couple moves into a mysterious New York City building, and the young woman becomes pregnant amidst a dark Satanic conspiracy. The car featured in the film's poster bears a striking resemblance to the one that catches Helena's eye at the end of Eyes Wide Shut—a car Alice dismisses as "too old-fashioned."

Has anyone else spotted references or similarities to other films in Eyes Wide Shut?

Cheap Bill Harford mask online?

Trying to do Bill Harford for Halloween this year and properly. I got the cloak. I need the mask but they're all $200 - anyone aware of cheap knockoffs either online or in NYC?

Was Alice like Milich’s daughter as a youth? Exposed to way too much, and aware of the underbelly of high society?

Symbolism in original book

I’m reading the book that “Eyes Wide Shut” was based on, and I’m paying close attention to the many symbols, patterns and historical contexts that suggest deeper meanings in the story.

I’m 75 percent through the book, and so far, the author has slyly condemned: (1) Roman Catholic anti-Semitism; (2) former Russian, French, German and English aristocrats who supported that anti-Semitism; and (3) related conspiracies that would support the Nazis during World War II.

Yes, the book is also about marital pressures, the supposedly blurry line between sexual fantasy and sexual behavior, and a husband’s moral collapse. That collapse is hinted at with symbolic wordplay throughout the story. For instance, the husband in the book has a name that means “Gentle Protector,” but he consistently fails to protect people who take risks for him, and he specifically takes an increasingly harsh, non-gentle attitude toward his wife.

(Also, after he spends a night bumbling through attempts at adultery, he goes to his job at a hospital, and receives the news, “The journeyman locksmith, Karl Rodel, … passed away during the night.” That line seems symbolic because the name “Karl” means “husband”; “Rodel” can mean “wolf,” a metaphor for a sexual predator; a “journeyman” is a reliable day worker; and “locks”and “keys” are frequent sexual symbols.

(So, the line can be decoded to mean that the book’s husband, who was sexually reliable the day before, had spiritually died overnight, and had become an unfaithful “wolf.”)

But instead of focusing on the book’s sexuality, I’m going to focus on its subtle political commentary and related religious issues.

For folks who don’t know, “Eyes Wide Shut” is based on the 1926 novella “Dream Story” (“Traumnovelle”) by the Austrian author Arthur Schnitzler. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1972807269

His book came out only a year after Schnitzler’s fellow Austrian writer Adolf Hitler (the soon-to-be dictator of Nazi Germany) published “Mein Kampf.” That other book by Hitler popularized anti-Jewish hatred throughout both Germany and Austria.

Schnitzler was a Jewish physician, and the son of a Jewish physician. https://www.sdjewishworld.com/2024/09/16/jewish-biography-arthur-schnitzler-the-great-diagnostician/ So, anyone knowledgeable about history would expect Schnitzler to have been troubled by Hitler’s rise and by the spread of Hitler’s false conspiracy theory that greedy, perverted “Jewish bankers” were responsible for destroying the working-class economy.

Thus, it’s initially shocking that Schnitzler’s “Dream Story” involves a powerful conspiracy of sex cultists who are introduced to readers through a piano player who explicitly worked for a Jewish banker. That fact might lead readers to wrongly assume that Schnitzler was dangerously supporting anti-Semitic stereotypes, but close attention to details reveals that the author was planting a red herring — a decoy — to distract attention from the actual targets of his satire and criticism.

The decoy passage says this of the piano player, Nachtigall: “Once, while playing at a dance in the home of a wealthy banker, he embarrassed several couples with flattering but improper remarks … The host reprimanded him severely, but Nachtigall—cheerfully drunk—stood up and embraced him. The banker, furious (though himself Jewish), hurled a crude insult. Nachtigall immediately responded with a hard slap across the face, and that decisively ended his career in the city’s fashionable homes.” (The parenthetical remark in that quote is in the original text.)

So, the piano player, Nachtigall, only used to work for a Jewish banker, but no longer works for him or presumably for any of his professional associates. Thus, Jewish bankers are NOT part of the sex-cult conspiracy, and — in fact — the author portrays the Jewish banker as deeply offended by Nachtigall’s sexually harassing behavior. Therefore, the Jewish author Schnitzler likely included these details in his book as a direct response against Hitler’s anti-Jewish book from a year earlier.

Schnitzler’s book goes on to portray the cultists as masked monks and nuns in an edifice where the pianist and other musicians play sacred music. That raises the question of whether any of the cultists might be literal members of the Roman Catholic clergy, which — both then and recently — was often racked by sex scandals involving priests who were pedophiles, rapists and/or seducers.

During Schnitzler’s day, open anti-Semitism among Catholic priests was common, and the soon-to-be Pope Pius XII (Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli) was a political ally of Italy’s Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and eventually of Hitler. (Please see the book “The Pope at War: The Secret History of Pius XII, Mussolini, and Hitler,” by Pulitzer Prize winner David I. Kertzer, at https://www.amazon.com/dp/0812989945.)

The cultists have an orgy in a room draped in black, which raises the possibility that they are having a Satanic “Black Mass,” a mere parody of Catholic worship, but the cultists also dress as “cavaliers” — aristocratic knights, possibly including the Cavaliers who supported England’s King Charles I as he asserted the “divine right of kings” and got into constant religious skirmishes against the Protestant Puritans.

So, actual clergy and aristocrats from multiple nationalities may have been members of the cult.

For instance, the neighborhood where the orgy occurs is near “Galitzinberg,” which sounds like a reference to the “Golitsyn” family of Russian aristocrats, who included the late Czar/Emperor Peter the Great. Russian czarists infamously published an anti-Jewish tract known as “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” which falsely claimed to disclose a Jewish-led plot for world domination. So, such Russian anti-Semites might have attended the cult gathering.

Also, before the book’s protagonist attends that perverse event, he has to rent a costume from a man who seems aware of what will happen there, and that costumer apparently serves as the host of two molesters who are dressed as “vehmic judges,” officers of the (largely Germanic) Holy Roman Empire who sentenced people to death.

Thus, German aristocrats and clergy might have also attended the cult gathering.

The author Schnitzler mentions in passing that this profane orgy starts around 2 a.m. on or right after the Christian holy day Ash Wednesday. So, any Catholics present were supposed to be observing Lent, a 40-day period of repentance and reflection. But instead, the author says that attendees were still celebrating the prior holiday “Carnival,” a debauched pagan festival whose name means “farewell to the flesh.”

On Catholic calendars, Carnival (including Mardi Gras) and Lent both fall before Easter, the day that officially celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ after His Crucifixion.

Ironically, however, the book includes a bizarre dream sequence in which the husband’s failed attempts at adultery are indirectly compared to Christ’s Crucifixion. I can’t quite tell whether that scene is intended to mock Christianity itself or only to mock the husband’s pompous view of himself and/or his wife’s resentment of his sexual inadequacies.

Either way, on the topic of Easter: Although the Bible and many ancient historians (like Josephus, Tacitus and Suetonius) confirm that Jesus is a historical person who was literally crucified, many modern Easter traditions come from the pre-Christian worship of the Babylonian goddess Ishtar, a sex goddess for whom eggs and rabbits are fertility symbols.

Likewise, many modern Christmas traditions come from a winter celebration of Ishtar’s mythical lover, Tammuz. (That might be why the film director Stanley Kubrick moved the date of this story to Christmastime in “Eyes Wide Shut,” and this fact may be why he decorated a party scene with a Babylonian star that symbolizes Ishtar.)

Thus, “Dream Story” implies that many of the leaders of so-called “Christian” high society were actually pagans at heart, and were secretly behind the social and economic decay that they unfairly blamed on Jews.

“Dream Story” seems — in part — to be a rebuttal to conspiracy theories about Jewish bankers, and an assertion that the aristocrats and clergy of multiple nations were engaged in depraved conspiracies of their own that supported authoritarians and Hitler in particular.

I will think more on this theory when I’m done reading the book. I’m only about two dozen pages from the end. Then, I will ponder how all this relates to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the book and how to evaluate it during this Epstein era of Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and post-#MeToo activism.

Mr Milich's "Daughter"

Mr. Milich (the costume shop owner) has a "daughter" that appears twice.

The first time, she is with two men, presumably engaging in sexual activities. Mr. Milich is angry at her and the two men.

The second time that the daughter enters the scene (with the same two men), Mr. Milich is not upset, and not-so-subtly offers her to Bill.

What changed? Is the second encounter a hallucination? The fuck?

The movie is both a psychological journey that strips them of their marital innocence, and a literal experience where they lose their daughter.

The Stanley Kubrick Archives book NSFW

It finally came. Taschen had a sale on all books and this baby was half off. I thought about getting the Shining edition by the Two Gents, but this one was brought together by the Kubrick Estate along with Alison Castle and it's such a delight because it has all the movies and not just The Shining.

There were two editions, the other being small like the shining edition which is 7.9x8.7. I would rather wait until I find the XL edition of the shining on sale from a second party, the same with the second edition of this book which was 5.5x7.7 at 704 pages. That book is too small and thick for my old eyes. BIGGER is better and it glows as you can see. I love the two part segment. The first is full of pictures for each movie and the second part goes deep into each movie. 544 pages. It's $100.00 at the moment which is still a good price.

Happy I bought it and they sent the book wrapped in a large box so no injury came to it. Just wonderful. I recommend it to anyone, it should sit right next to the Criterion Collection if you own that.
