My friend from work keeps begging me to buy Escape from Tarkov with the PvE expansion and swears it's one of the best games ever lol. I know Tarkov helped pave the way for games like ARC Raiders, Arena Breakout Infinite, Active Matter, Gray Zone Warfare and Marathon, but I'm curious what makes it stand out so much because it clearly has to be doing something right.
Marathon is the extraction shooter I've played the most. I love the visuals, gunplay and contracts that give me reasons to keep coming back, while I put around 12 hours into ARC Raiders before getting bored. I'm honestly not great at these games either and probably get destroyed 90% of the time in Marathon 😂
I'm especially curious about Tarkov's PvE mode. Is it genuinely fun to play solo for hundreds of hours, progressing through quests, collecting gear and upgrading your hideout, or does it eventually get repetitive? What keeps you coming back to Tarkov over other extraction shooters?
The biggest thing holding me back is the price. Around $80 for the base game and PvE expansion is a lot when I could end up getting bored after five hours. For those who've spent the money, what makes it worth it?
Also, with Halloween coming up, how good are Tarkov's events? Do they actually change the atmosphere, with spooky map decorations, Halloween-themed bosses, unique encounters or anything that makes the maps feel different? Or is it mostly cosmetics and extra rewards? And do they do anything memorable for Christmas, too?
Lastly, are there any free extraction shooters with a similar feel to Tarkov, preferably with PvE, that you'd recommend trying first without spending the $80?
My friend makes this game sound like nothing else compares, so I really want to understand what I'm missing lol.
