Jobs/Careers I'm scared to specialise/ choose between hardware electronics or electromechanical (18 year old in UK)
So there are two Airbus degree apprenticeships (apprenticeship where company pays for your degree) one is electro-mechanical engineering (BEng in electro-mech) and one is electronics hardware engineering (Bsc in hardware engineering)
I find electronics interesting and could be good to have a career in it (or atleast start there). I made a DIY guitar pedal (soldered stuff together floating mid-air) and I like the challenging nature of electronics and electricL engineering.
But also I'm worried in the future I will be stuck or the pay won't be as good as other roles. Or I will be bored. I'd enjoy designing and making stuff and getting creative.
So could anyone recommend or give some advice as to which to choose, or some things to think about before choosing?
Or am I Deeping it?
PS electromechanical says I would be on placements such as:
aircraft architecture and integration, design, simulation, stress and fatigue, systems installation safety analysis, research and technology, certification, ground and flight test, I service support, digital (e.g. coding, AI, machine learning, data analytics)
Hardware says skills taught include:
Construction of complex low volume communication products, maintenance of product assembly and test capabilities, repair and test products, design and repair PCB to IPC standards, requirements capture skills, soldering to approved standards, schematic capture, CAD for sim and design, performing in house electronics design, documenting the design

Project Help How do i go onto designing audio hardware ?
So brief context, i am en EE undergraduate who already took all my electronics classes and i (should) know how to project a generic amp.
I am not experienced at all with audio and djing but i find it very interesting and wanted to try (as a sideproject) to design and build an audio FX processor (like the dj decks to add reverb and whatever) but i dont know how to jump from my classes amps to those things, so any tips on materials and/or where or how to learn about this more specific stuff?

Jobs/Careers what do you think ee is going to look like in next 5-10 years?
just a random thought that came to my mind. kinda tired of seeing all this stuff about ai and was just wondering what could ee look like in the future in terms of work, projects or maybe jobs as well. is ee gonna end up like cs as well?

Research Wasted my EE degree
Haven’t worked on anything EE related in 5 years since my graduation. Looking to get back into it. Is there any way i can be an independent researcher?

Education Is an EE degree worth it?
I’m currently getting my butt kicked in my classes, and am starting to wonder if this degree is worth all the trouble. What is the experience after university like?

Freshman Rejected from every design team/club
So long story short
EE freshman at a large public and I got rejected from FSAE, BAJA and Solar. Idk what they expect from a freshman but I prob spent 5 hrs on every app and some gave projects I did. Js sad 😢 I didnt get anything when my friend got into FSAE with no interview cause he is ME and another got into Firmware straight away cause he cracked af.
I was wondering what to do. I was thinking abt making a Lunar Rover Team or Robosub as it seems cool tho idk if ppl would join or how we would get funding and comp sign up for this yr was like 2 weeks ago and I have no skills as I am a freshman so idk.
Do I go all in on club try personal project or smth else?

Retired EE
My dad is a retired EE. He's the type to try to fix something as long as he has the schematic. My mom passed recently and my dad has been lonely. I'd like to find a project he could work on that suits his EE interests. He's refurbished an old electro-mechanical pinball machine, we've built a reprap, he's refurbished old health kits.
I'm asking this community what might be some cool to build that's similar to these things I mentioned above. I'm not sure he'd go for something as big as a pinball machine. But something smaller. I was kinda thinking of something like a nixie clock. But does this community have any suggestions?

Equipment/Software First oscilloscope recommendation
I’m an embedded firmware engineer and have been doing more PCB design lately. I’m at a point where I need to debug a board and for now I want to detect and record transient voltage spikes.
What oscilloscope would someone recommend as a first. Ideally at least 2 channels with trigger and save functions. I’ve even looked at handheld ones. There is so much it’s hard to focus on one. Ideally don’t want to break the bank. (200usd)
Thank you

Jobs/Careers Spend time learning or applying?
I think I have an interesting question:
For someone like me who graduated 6 months ago with no interships or club experience working a non eng job full time = limited free time.
If I want a technical engineering job of any kind, do you think it would be better spending my free time researching companies and applying or learning skills for months then apply?
I really cannot decide and it stopping from
doing anything productive after work:(

Jobs/Careers Job search after graduating with no experience
(In nj/ny/pa area) Do i have a good chance at acquiring an ee related job/internship after graduating even though i didnt do any internships, any clubs, nor research/projects to boast about and my gpa isn’t great but i have good people/team skills and know the basics like pcb, cad, soldering, etc.
If anyone has had similar experiences how was the job search post graduation?

Army Veteran Pursuing Electrical Engineering — Looking for Advice
Hey everyone, getting out of the Army soon and planning to start working toward a bachelor's degree in EE next fall.
I am 28 years old and married. My existing bachelor's degree makes me ineligible for a few schools. I've already applied to UMass Lowell, Northeastern, Wentworth, UNH, UVM and CU Boulder.
The list is very New England heavy because I'd love to live there after graduation.
I would love to get some insight/advice from engineers who are already in the field. I have two questions;
1- I have absolutely zero drive to play corporate/office politics. I am not very ambitious in that sense. My top priorities are; low stress, work/life balance and job security. Which EE subfields should I explore during my studies/internships? I don't mind technical challenges; I'm primarily trying to avoid excessive overtime, unpredictable schedules, and workplace politics. Also, please keep in mind the rise of AI.
2- Are there any particular schools I should look into as a married, nontraditional student?
Thank you, everyone!

Planet Labs: Electrical Engineer Technical Interview
Hi! I have a technical interview coming up with Planet. I'm worried that I'm gonna get rejected because I've been through a few technical interviews with other companies already and also got rejected because I didn't know the answer to questions that are apparently standard in the industry. Questions like "why would you use a decoupling capacitor for an ABC input?". What should I do to prepare? Any advice would be appreciated!

Jobs/Careers Is getting my journeyman license and then transferring to electrical engineering worth it?
Hello, I am currently 21 and I have been having a bit of a career crisis as I get paid dirt at 2 years in my company even though I work my ass off and do better than most.
I really enjoy hands on work with industrial and commercial installations but it lacks the deeper knowledge I wish I could have on electricity. I remember when I was newer I would ask my foreman questions and would get a “we’re installers we don’t need to know that.”
I was wondering if I got my journeyman license and then went and got a EE degree would that give me a stronger resume in an engineering role?
I don’t think it would help me with college, of course, because some classes tend to have nothing to do with anything I’m trying to study or they’re purely theoretical. Which is, the reason I only had a year in college majoring in biomedical engineering, but I failed and dropped out and became an electrician. Especially since, I came from a college preparatory school and had already been pounded down with hard classes my whole life so I was burnt on academics and didn’t care. Well, they weren’t hard per se, just being undiagnosed adhd till 19 and having an excessive work load of class work and homework made it all hard.
If I do go this route, I will be sad to not have the actual hands on work and more of sitting at a desk all the time. But, if it’s the only way I can get to understand electricity at a deeper level, rather than only thinking “Man my coworkers can’t tap at all no wonder I just felt my arm go jelly from 277v and also saw a j-box explode.”, I guess it’s the route I have to go.
I have passion for it, it’s just schooling is blegh and I’m wondering if I should just stick with electrical work, maybe even get into distribution, instead of engineering since if my experience won’t apply then I’ve kind of wasted time and it would cost me a good amount of money.

Need help with this part DC Contactor GV242 MAX
Basically I am working on an IGVC robot and am trying to diagnose the issue and work with this part. I’ve tried testing it with dc power supply’s for 12v limit and 3.6 A limit for the coil wires. But ever time I attatch the clamps to the coil wires I do not hear a click and the dc power supply only reads 12 v no amps. I need some help

Jobs/Careers How are you guys getting entry level jobs?
Hi all, I’m new here so forgive me if not allowed or this is previously covered somewhere else. My boyfriend has a bachelors degree and is currently pursuing a masters in ECE but taking time off from school before he finishes his degree. He has been applying to jobs since well before he graduated with his bachelors. Many professionals he has with LinkedIn told him that his résumé looks great and offered a referral, but he is still facing rejections every single day before even getting to speak to a recruiter and and has not found even a single opportunity. I feel terrible for him and am wondering if why this might be? Are their companies that aren’t so cutthroat I could look into for him? Does anyone have any advice? It’s literally every single place he applies, and he has a solid education, experience and background through school.

I need guidance for my senior project idea (Small Scale Hybrid Generator)
I'm a third-year student in my second semester, and I've had the idea of a hybrid generator for a while. But every natural resource I put into it, with what little constraints I have, breaks the laws of physics. Constraint: portable (30lbs max), 750-1Kw. At first it was for sure going to be a hybrid solar generator but for it to be portable, it'd need to be a rating of 80-100w which is a joke for the battery capacity I'm going for. It would take two days approx which isnt an efficient generator, this device is supposed to serve more as a doomsday device and because i love solar cell in my semiconductors class it seemed like the definitive choice but even with God himself i cant make an mppt give me more power than its inputting, wind energy is extremely unreliable and im still new to engineering projects so Im scared and hydro energy doesn't seem conducive given that the emergency device should work wherever not just in proximity to natural water supplies. Which leaves me with an permanent magnetic alternator with a wind turbine, and through research I haven't seen that be applied as an enclosed generator for anything outside cars, so I'm stumped. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, I know this idea is turning out to be highly unrealistic after more research, but I'm not as educated as senior power system engineers; if there are more specifications to consider beyond the general converter and inverter, please let me know. P.S. The generator has a lot of other components and specifications, but I figure if I can't get my main idea working, why share its siblings. Also, I'd love to hear from anyone who has built a small-scale generator. I'd love any experience or advice you can give
