Question Purple Flowering Christmas Cactus

• Upvotes

Is there any store in Edmonton that sells Christmas Cacti with true purple flowers? We have had a pink flowering cactus for over 40 years (propagated from my Mom's which was propagated from my Grandmother's). We have had a white flowering cactus for 2 years now, and would like to add purple to our collection of plants.

Question Loud throbbing noise downtown

• Upvotes

I'm by the Save On at Jasper & 109. For the past hour, there has been deep, throbbing noise - it sounds like some kind of generator or something, but it's extremely loud: I'm inside, many floors up, and can hear it with windows closed. (It's much louder from my balcony.) I can't see the source. Anyone know what it is?

Question Trading card store that sells bulk 'junk' pokemon cards?

• Upvotes

Are there any TCG stores in Edmonton that sell bulk 'junk' cards? I've contacted a bunch of stores and all seem to only sell cards as singles, offloading the 'junk' cards to bulk sellers who repackage them and sell elsewhere.

I'm just looking for cards for a 6 year old so he can bring them to school, trade them, etc. I could buy them online but it would be a more fun experience for him to go into a store to get them.

Question KLM flight to Amsterdam from Edmonton

Looking for people who have done this flight as I’ve seen it comes and goes pretty regularly. I have never flown internationally (nothing more than 5 hours ever) and I have extreme flight anxiety. I am planning to do this flight in January on my own. Just looking for some experience of how this route is such as the level of turbulence, the service provided and how the aircraft itself feels! Really anything at all may help! Thanks in advance!

Edit: I can’t reply to everyone but oh my gosh this has been the most helpful response I’ve ever gotten on here!! Thank you to everyone who replied I already feel so much more confident about taking this flight :)

Edit 2: this is seriously the nicest comment section I have ever had on a reddit post😭😭 Thank you so much again everyone. I truly hope every commenter as a wonderful life :)

Question Fresh Candy Apples?

Hi fellow Edmontonians. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on where I can buy good quality red hard candy and caramel apples for Halloween in the city. Hoping for something fresh, where the coating isn’t so thick you can’t even bit into it. I’ve tried to make them before and they’ve always been a mess with the coatings sliding off the apple. I could be convinced to try again if anyone has a fast and true easy method…but I would rather skip it and buy them.

All suggestions welcome!

Question Flooring Company Recommendations

This subreddit has been super helpful for me in navigating my mom’s basement renovation since the flood this past summer, so I was hoping to get some first hand recommendations for flooring companies, that offer quality work at a reasonable price and can install relatively soon.

I was thinking sheet vinyl in the main open area/laundry area, and vinyl planking on other half where the den is?

- 1,100sq ft basement
- all flooring/baseboards removed down to cement
- need stairs and landing done as well

Thank you all so much!

Artist / Local Culture Looking for a Ceramic Artist. I want a cookie jar!

As the title says, I want a fun cookie jar and I'd really like it to be made by a local artist. I've been to a few art markets now, on the lookout for one, but none of the ceramic artists I've seen have had one or been the kind of style I'm looking for to make it worth a request. A fun style could be colour, shape- I'm just looking for something with some character in it! Something that will make me smile and want to bake cookies for it! Not really feeling the neutral earth tone clayware look. Please let me know if you have reccomendations on artists or where to look next. Thanks!

Question Vet Recommendations - Small Dog

I live on the west end of Edmonton and I am looking for recommendations for a great vet clinic. Specifically places that you have had good experiences with your small dogs.

I have a small young chihuahua and she is pretty nervous with new people and a little spicy. But when she clicks with someone she is pretty great, but very particular I would say. And needs someone who takes the time and has patience to deal with her in a positive manner.

She really likes one vet at my current clinic. Another time she was seen by someone else and was not a fan the minute they walked into the exam room. But unfortunately I have been having some not so great experiences with my animals at this clinic. I have been having to do a lot of my own research and suggesting things or asking a billion questions.. Having to go back numerous times on certain issues. My dog that passed away last year was misdiagnosed and I brought him in with concerns numerous times. And I actually pushed for further testing and that’s how we discovered a mass. There have been other instances since with our other pets and I feel I have become a bit distrusting. And I think it’s time I try somewhere else.

I also have a larger breed senior dog and a senior cat. But they are pretty good with people and not high maintenance like my chi.

Spotted this poster at the Kokoriko Fried Chicken counter in the food court at Lucky Supermarket’s Southside location on Calgary Trail yesterday. 🇰🇷

Looks like Korean Culture Day is happening today, October 24! Sharing in case anyone in Edmonton is interested in checking it out.

I had to repost this again because there was an incorrect mistake with the date in the title.

General Alberta Ballet - Peer Gynt

Alright. I was on here a month ago bemoaning that the Alberta Ballet didn’t have much for substance these days. Tonight they proved to me that they do (and I hope they find a way to keep this going all season long).

The show was everything you’d want.. Costumes & set? Whimsical. Choreography? Bold, brilliant and at times bizarre. Dancers? Hilarious and left everything on the stage. Perfect show for the spooky season.

Will be going again tomorrow and hope you’ll consider joining me! They have two shows in Edmonton on Saturday and then in Calgary next weekend.

Congrats to the dancers and Edward!

Discussion Halloween Themed Things In The City

I’m off work for a couple weeks starting today. From now until November 1st, what are some fun Halloween events going on? I’ve been to Deadmonton and that’s about it so far. Would love a mix of shows, events, other scary haunted houses, things for couples to go to with my lady. Shoot me all your suggestions!

Discussion Why don't more women and younger people drive for ETS (and work for the city/province in general), given the pay and benefits?

ETS operators have one of the better entry-level packages in the city: $29.74–$37.18/hr, a 30% premium on Sundays, 3 weeks paid vacation, comprehensive benefits, strong union protections, and up to 85 paid sick days at 100% of wage.

With the job market the way it is, I'd expect a lot of people, including younger folks, to be lining up for this. But I don't see many female drivers, and most operators seem to be in an older age range and skew towards a few racial demographics that do not reflect the population and transit riders in Edmonton today.

Edit: Saying young people "don't want these jobs" ignores the fact that many are working two or three retail jobs just to cover rent, in an economy where owning a home feels out of reach based on the wages they earn. A lot of retail jobs don't come with good benefits either. If ETS widened its applicant pool, I think it could potentially ease some of the ETS operator issues brought up on reddit recently

Outdoor Spaces/Recreation Long off Leash Trail.

I'm looking for a change of scenery for my nerds. We do a 4.5km loop every day at Hermitage. With winter creeping up, I thought a change of scenery would do us all good.

Is there any off leash trails that you recommend? 50 km radius from the city limits works for us.

We have been to Deer Mound, Terwilliger, and Buena Vista.

Question Rhinoplasty/plastic surgeon/septum piercing

Many items in my title and I will explain it all here:
I had a paediatric rhinoplasty around 14 years ago to correct a deviated septum.
I now would like to have my septum pierced, but have been reading up on the possible structural dangers if it is not approved by a surgeon/experienced medical professional before getting it pierced.

That being said, I am no longer a patient of my surgeon, nor am I in the paediatric age range to become his patient again. My question is, before I email every plastic surgeon in the city, is there anyone who has encountered a similar situation and was able to go a surgeon (other than the one who completed original surgery) with medical records/have an exam done, that would be willing to lend their expertise if a septum piercing is safe or not?

I am absolutely crushed by the idea of not being able to get my septum pierced, as I hate my nose and was hoping it would make me like my face a little bit more, but this major road block feels like I won’t be able to overcome it and get the piercing.

Any and all info is appreciated, even if you are just recommending your rhinoplasty surgeon in yeg if you had a good experience with them!
TIA and please be kind 💜

Discussion Smart car rollover 91 street 23 ave.

I’m trying to find out some more information on this rollover that happened on Tuesday night at 9 o’clock . a smart car driver was driving down the shoulder of 91st St. going south on 23rd Ave. and hit the curb and flipped his car and was ejected. I have a neighbour that drives a smart car and I haven’t seen much of him all week. I’m thinking it could be the same guy.

Discussion What the heck is up with ETS drivers lately?

I’m actually still in shock as I write this post so please bear with me.

What the actual hell is going on with bus drivers in this city? Speeding, bumper riding, constantly honking horns, yelling/swearing at other drivers and riders, not stopping at designated stops, not waiting for passengers clearly running for the bus, not waiting for elderly people to find their seats before driving off, not letting people out from the back doors that are asking to be let off.

Ive watched all of these things happen multiple times in the last few months. I’ve been taking transit for years, morning and evening, rush hours and slow hours. Across all routes. Never have I witnessed behaviour like this before. I saw an elderly person desperately trying to rush to bus stop in the rain, waving his hands only to be driven past. He was only a couple of feet away from the stop. I’ve seen an elderly person thrown to floor because the driver couldn't be bothered to wait 5 seconds for them to sit. Dont even get me started in all the near accidents that have almost happened, not because of other drivers but because of the impatience and entitlement of the transit drivers! Today was what prompted me to finally make this post. I witnessed a child, struggling to remove his arc card from his backpack to tap off and panicking, beg the driver to wait a moment who was activity trying to drive away only for the driver to scream (yes scream!) at them to hurry up and stop wasting everyones time. The child was tears! I couldn’t believe it. How disgusting to treat anyone in such a manner let alone a little kid.

The complete lack of professionalism is staggering. If any other public servants behaved like this there be mass retraining programs and public apologies. This isn’t one particular driver or one particular route. Its EVERYWHERE. ETS needs to do something. This is getting downright dangerous! I can empathize with the strain of dealing with the public. I can appreciate the stress that comes with navigating the city all day but we have to do better. People are being hurt and dare I say victimized by our transit staff. How can this be let to continue? Am I the only one noticing this disturbing trend?
