**SAFETY**
This subreddit strongly advises AGAINST doing prolonged (3+ days) dry fasts if your only source of information or experience comes from what is discussed on this subreddit. If you are an experienced faster and are receiving outside help/medical check-ups, then your knowledge obviously extends beyond what is discussed here. You are otherwise putting yourself at risk of potentially worsening your health as the scientific literature is extremely limited on this subject. Please remember to fast responsibly.
If you begin to feel uncomfortable or unwell, you should stop fasting immediately. Other worrying signs may include high protein in the urine, high fever, and fainting.
**HUMAN STUDIES**
* The dehydration treatment of epilepsy
**ANIMAL STUDIES**
* Increased fat catabolism sustains water balance during fasting in zebra finches
* Intermittent drinking, oxytocin and human health
* The ‘selfish brain’ is regulated by aquaporins and autophagy under nutrient deprivation
* When less means more: Dehydration improves innate immunity in rattlesnakes
**BIOLOGICAL STUDIES/THEORETICAL PAPERS**
* Unmasking the secrets of cancer
* Cell hydration and mTOR-dependent signaling
* Effects of acute and chronic hypohydration on kidney health and function
Please note that we probably will not add studies that have loose/indirect associations between "dehydration" and physiological mechanisms of action. From the most reliable human study we have, they state that "on day 4 and 5, all participants had a controllable feeling of thirst, but none showed any signs of dehydration." I think it's best we avoid words that have negative implications (i.e. "dehydration) when discussing dry fasting, and unless the study is extremely valuable or shows very large effect results, it's probably best to avoid adding these studies that will clutter the list and make the whole thing look more extreme than it already is. You can still post the studies for discussion, they may just not be added to the list.
Feel free to post additional links in the comments as you find them and I will add them to the list.

If I do 7 days of dry fasting, followed by 7 days of water fasting, then repeat this cycle—7 days of dry fasting, 7 days of water fasting, and another 7 days of dry fasting—while also walking 10,000 steps daily, how many kilograms could I potentially lose in total?
Please, I don’t want lectures about how dry fasting and water fasting for so many days are harmful. I’ve done dry fasting before, and my body is used to it. I’ve also seen positive results from it. However, I haven’t fasted for a year, and now I desperately want to lose the weight I’ve gained!!!!!!

guys will my metabolism be permanently fucked up if i start eating normally/everyday again? I currently do like a 4-5 day dry fast every week. It makes me feel better. But im afraid if i start eating normally again, even healthily, I’ll just start gaining uncontrollable weight or never be able to lose weight without dry fasting again. What do yall think? I’ve already lost like 15 kg since last month through dry fasting. Won’t I eventually stop losing weight when i dry fast? Idk pls be nice im a noob. ❤️

Does anyone do this? I have done 2 or 3 36-hour dry fasts in the past; they were surprisingly not that difficult except for maybe the first few hours of the day. I work 12 hour shifts in a nursing home. I sweat and it can be physically demanding at times. I want to do my first 2 or 3 days of a 7 day fast dry. Any experience or insight would be appreciated. Also, I usually just do water with no added electrolytes to break a dry fast. When should I add the electrolytes?

My main goal is gut healing and mental health and I’m wondering if intermittent dry fasting is advised/recommended even if my weight is normal? I do primarily carnivore diet and have CIRS. Any thoughts?

I plan on doing a weekly 3 day soft dry fast for weight loss. Was wondering if anyone has done this themselves and what the results were? I will give an update on my progress for those interested.

I want to try dry fasting. But I am worried that I may develop kidney stones because of the absence of water. I am also not in my most healthiest form. Are there any people with dry fasting experience for a couple days? Did you get kidney stones or was it not that bad. And should you only start dry fasting when you are already quite healthy or can I start now if I am not quite healthy? Would love to hear your tips and tricks regarding this.
Thank you!

Never done it like that but is it different from a straight dry fast? What benefits does it have?

I'm on a dry fast and my lip skin flakes off (falling off)

Do you think this is because I used to drink soda while playing games.

Hi, i completed a first dry fast, a 84hdry fast.
I tried to be as careful as possible to break the fast but I find there is alot of conflicting information. I took a few sips of plain water over a few hours. Then, a few sips of kefir (less than 200ml) over 2 hours. I now hear my heart pounding, but no racing, and have weird sensations in my leg. They are not swollen, just aching and cold. I have took a few sips of water with table salt and am now slowly eating bok choy, mushrooms in chicken broth.
Any tips to help?

Hello. I have a lot of experience water fasting. I used to do 3 days a month, then some longer quarterly fasts, and have done multiple 8-10 day water fasts.
I am relatively new to dry fasting.
I decided to do a weekly 40-48 hour fast over the summer and have been doing that maybe since August. Today is my fourth “dry fast” Monday.
The first time was the most difficult because of the coffee withdrawal, but now my body has gotten used to it.
I guess I am just wondering if anyone has thoughts about the long term sustainability of a weekly dry fast? Is this something I can do indefinitely? Or should I maybe do it in cycles? 6 weeks on a few weeks off?
I plan on eventually working my way up to like a yearly Phoenix protocol, which I believe is a 7 day dry fast, I have the book.
One of my other questions is: does a multiple day dry fast do more harm than good if you do them too regularly, let’s say I wanted to push to 72 hours? Does this start to interfere w stem cell regeneration.
Anyways, I’d appreciate any thoughts or potential concerns maybe I’m not aware of. Thanks.

Has anyone experienced a really bad headache after you broke the dry fast? I dry fasted for about 64 hours and then I drank a bottle of water and some salt. I have a headache now 8 hours later. I don’t know how to get it to go away

After my desire for soda and water started going away my body is fighting back sending me signals of cravings I didn't have for a long time like Kombucha and cherry licorice.

When I was younger I didn't drink water often. When I started hitting the gym I developed a habit to drink lots of water. That is what makes me yearn for water more.

My dry fasts have always been when I am off work and in bed or resting, but I do want to push myself for the next 10 days (currently 18 hours in). Do you see more fat loss when you're walking, getting your steps in.. etc? Or does that make it difficult to sustain your enthusiasm?

That's just what I know and have to vent. So not eating until my body fat had depleted a bit.
