Content Cross-Pollination Basics
Here is a detailed, step-by-step breakdown of how to cross-pollinate dragon fruit flowers using a small brush and a battery-operated hand vacuum.
### Step 1: Prepare Your Supplies (At Dusk)
* **Timing:** Dragon fruit flowers bloom at night and typically open fully late in the evening, remaining receptive until the early morning hours. Plan to start your work once the blooms begin opening.
* **Setup:** Ready your materials on a tray or in a portable kit. You will need a clean, soft-bristled brush, a small collection container (like a glass jar), and a battery-operated hand vacuum fitted with a clean, fine-filter cup or specialized collection tip to catch the fine pollen dust without losing it into the motor.
### Step 2: Collect Pollen from the Donor Flower
* **Vacuum the Dust:** Turn on your battery-operated vacuum and carefully hover the tip right over the brushed anthers. The vacuum will quickly suck up the loose, golden pollen dust into its collection cup, preventing it from falling or blowing away in the night air.
### Step 3: Mix and Prepare Your Pollen Blend
* **Empty the Vacuum:** Carefully remove the filter cup or collection tip from the hand vacuum and empty the gathered pollen into your small container.
* **Combine Varieties:** For optimal hybridization and fruit set, repeat the collection process with other varieties blooming that night. Combine the pollen from blooming varieties in your container and use the brush to gently mix them together.
### Step 4: Apply Pollen to the Receptive Flower
* **Locate the Target:** Find the receptive flower you wish to pollinate. Identify its **stigma**, which is the large, star-like receptive organ extending past the stamens in the center of the bloom.
* **Coat the Stigma:** Dip your soft brush into the mixed pollen container, heavily coating the bristles. Brush a generous amount of the pollen mixture onto the entire surface of the receptive stigma lobes, ensuring comprehensive contact.
### Step 5: After Care & Monitoring Success
* **Flower Wither:** Within 2 to 3 days after a successful pollination session, the large white petals of the flower will naturally begin to wither and dry up.
* **Watch for Swelling:** Keep a close eye on the **ovary** at the absolute base of the flower. If cross-pollination was successful, the ovary will begin to swell and stay green while the flower parts start to yellow and wither. The ovary will eventually develop into a mature, seed-bearing hybrid dragon fruit.

Our 1st two dragons 🐉 even though we thought the flower wasn't pollinated.
What is the hole? Did we pick them to early? Why are they so small? Growing in a pot is there something we can do next time to make the fruit bigger?

Anyone grow to maturity in 5gal buckets?
I just whipped up these 5 gallon buckets to test out different builds. Its getting harder and harder to wheel my 20gal buckets around and have new varieties coming.
If these are unwieldy to carry i have a rolling hydraulic lift table that would be perfect to move these in and out as seasons change.
Only thing I worry about is being topheavy. Anyone grow in something similar? Are they top heavy?

Soil for indoor DF
I have many indoor rooted cuttings from an old dragonfruit cactus and I just got Bonsai Jacks Gritty Mix for cacti and succulents. I wanted to know if I mixed Jack’s with 50% miracle grow cactus soil if my dragon fruit would like it. Everybody’s saying amend the soil with pumice and perlite and orchid bark. But I could never find pumice so right now they are in cactus soil with perlite and orchid bark and they are doing well.
TLDR; I want to know if my DF like a more well draining mix like cactus soil mixed with Jacks Gritty Soil Mix.
Thanks!

Update
Should I keep going or cut the thick portion, dry out and replant to start new with a bigger base?

Looking for Palora dragonfruit
Good morning!
I'm seriously at my wit's end trying to find an Ecuador Palora dragonfruit plant. I've contacted multiple sellers, but every time I try to set up a time to pick one up, they stop responding.
My daughter loves this variety, and I've been trying to get my hands on a plant so we can grow our own at home.
Does anyone know where I can find one in San Diego? I'd really appreciate any leads. Thank you!
Update: Thank you everyone! I was able to connect to a local and picked one up today.

Season ends before some fruits ripen.
Temps dip into the 30s tonight here and into the weekend. Wheeled the plants inside. Some fruit were just a couple weeks from being ripe.
Anyone dealt with this before? Will they ripen indoors without the sun?

Where can I get a yellow dragon fruit cutting in Los Angeles/SGV area?
I have the red/white dragon fruit and I have been trying to grow the yellow variety, but it seems to be much more difficult by watching a few YouTube videos and bought yellow ones with green stems attached. And trying to grow from the stems. A few tries have not yielded the result.
I was wondering if the community here knows where to get a cutting to grow? Local nursery does not seem to have the yellow one and Esty, I don’t know how reliable it is via shipping. Thanks.

Propping a Brud
Just wanted to share and see if others have tried the same. I had a really thick bud turned vegetative branch on my Vietnamese White. I chopped it and rooted it. Rooted very easily and it has developed a great root system. About 90 days in and no new growth yet. Hormones are already confused, but I wanted to experiment on how long it would take to throw new vegetative growth.
Curious if anyone else has tried this and what your experience was! I am SW FL zone 10a

American Beauty, Now I get the hype!!!
Been growing dragonfruit in central Illinois for 3 years now. Finally this year got my first fruit.
9 Natural Mystic
3 American Beauties
3 Vietnam Whites
Harvested my first American Beauty today. It was a solid 1.3 lbs at 54 days.
The brix score of 20% blew my mind because its been alot cooler here the past few weeks and all the natural mystic fruits ive harvested had only been 15 to 17% brix.
But the flavor.... Wow!!!! Like a super sweet pineapple with hints of red raspberries. The center was super sweet and the outer edges had a great tangy sour sweetness.
This is the first year ive tasted any dragon fruit other than store bought and holy crap homegrown df flavor is on another planet!
Cant wait untill next year when all my plants start putting out fruit.
Well worth the years of work it took, and its possible to do in colder northern climates like here solong as you plan your pots and overwintering area.
Such an amazing plant!!!
