đ«A New Life for Donkeys and Mules!âïž
We did it!
We officially moved to our new sanctuary on January 11th!
It took 3 years of planning and building, 8 team members, 14 hours, and 8 trips back and forth, but all the donkeys are now enjoying their forever home at Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary.
Moving day from the old sanctuary was filled with a mix of emotions. As we loaded each donkey, memories of their difficult pasts surfaced, reminding us of how far theyâd come. Seeing them step onto the trailer, headed towards a life of peace and freedom at Rancho Burro, brought tears to our eyes. It was a powerful moment for everyone on the team, a testament to the resilience of these gentle animals and the love that makes their new life possible.
Our team and the donkeys watched the sunrise together at the old sanctuary and the sunset at the new one...together the family we all have come to be.
They now have rolling hills to explore, spacious pastures to roam, unlimited enrichment, a comfy new barn, and a covered arena to keep those hooves dry in the winter (which will also double as an event space!).
We even welcomed a new resident, Ginger the mule! She didnât have a good future ahead of her before her owners reached out to us, but we are so grateful they didd and for her place in our family.
This sanctuary is a safe haven for our current donkeys and mules, and a refuge for those who need us in the future. Part of our mission is to share the goodness of donkeys with the out community!
None of this would be possible without YOU! Every donation has helped us build this special place.
Exciting things are happening at The New Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary! Stay tuned for updates on our new programs, workshops, and classes.
Weâll sharing ongoing inspiring case studies highlighting our new dedicated medical room, rescue journeys and rehabilitation efforts.
We are incredibly grateful for your support. Every donation makes a difference!

New Mexican Donkeys (Part 2)
I met this donkey at El Rancho de Las Golondrinas (Ranch of the Swallows) near Santa Fe, New Mexico. It is a large Living History Museum. I was fortunate enough to meet two donkeys there. This one was the leader of the herd. They were both very rugged and muscular.

5 year old mini jack suddenly aggressive towards mini gelding
We have 4 mini donkeys; 1 jack, 1 gelding and 2 jennys. The gelding and jack are only a few months apart in age (the gelding is a few months older). We got the gelding in March of 2021 and the jack in November of 2021, both were around 6 months old when we got them so they have been raised together. They have always gotten along wonderfully and been inseparable best friends. We added the jennys in March of 2023 (one was around 6ish years old or so and the other about 3 years old when we brought them home) and all 4 of them have lived together with zero issues until about a month ago. Now our Jack has attacked our gelding twice in the past month. Since the jack was around 3ish years old when we brought the girls home and the girls were already breeding age (the older one had already had 2 foals before we got her, the younger one hadn't been bred yet), I expected if we were going to have problems it would have already happened. Neither of our jennys have had foals since we've had them despite them all 4 being together all the time. Is this typical for our jack to have such a sudden change in behavior towards our gelding at 5 years old? Especially when they've been together pretty much their whole lives? They're all minis but our gelding is the smallest of the 4. I just hate it because our jack is so sweet towards people! He's halter broke, lead broke, loads in the trailer wonderfully, you can love on him in the pasture, he eats gently out of your hand, hasn't tried to kick or bite a person. He's just had an awful turn in behavior towards our gelding.

Donkey Pair- Jenny is mean and Jack is nice
Hi! I recently got two donkeys to live with my two cows. The jenny came over and at first she was timid, but over the past two weeks of being here she has gotten mean. She kicks the cows when they get near her and kicks her Jack companion. Has anyone ever seen this? I canât have her kicking the cows but it doesnât look like you can separate a bonded pair.

Can donkeys have orchard grass?
Considering switching from mixed grass round bales to orchard grass ones. My donkeys are pastured with a horse who could benefit from orchard vs our high nsc straw like hay.

Micro donkey
Have seen several vids with them. Having a hard time convincing the wife that we neeeeeed (no we donât) another 4 legged animal around here. Have to ask what the donkey community thinks of them. Info on line is sparse.

Willie got his hooves trimmed today and was a very good boy, as he always is. Heâs such a sweet old boy â€ïž

How much feed?
Iâm getting different answers in my search so Iâll ask the experts!
I have a seven month old, 100 pound mini donkey. How much Essential K with fly control feed should she get in a day? She pasture feeds during the day and has hay at night.
