🦓 Senior Dog Care How much further can I go? Does she have long quicks? or am I just being nervous

We adopted her about 2 months ago, I’ve been avoiding nail trims to keep her heart rate low since she is in the middle of heartworm treatment but surprisingly she doesn’t mind nail trims.
How much more can I trim? It seems like she has really long quicks?? She was surrendered with really long nails so I don’t think she’s ever had routine care done, I don’t want to hit her quick and make this a negative experience.
screenshot and draw where I can trim to please!

🩺 Symptom Check Desperate for my German Shepherd!

Thumbnail gallery
23 Upvotes

We are running out of ideas with our German Shepherd "Whiskey" and her skin condition. We are going to her 6th Vet visit tomorrow and 3rd vet, and no real resolution yet. Each vet visit has been followed by a round of antibiotics, changing her diet to prescribed anti-allergy food, using skin cleansers, and medicated shampoos, keeping her indoor more and away from allergens, and after we got back yesterday from a 2 vacation, she developed this new infection & this is the worse skin infection yet! She now has greenish liquid, which is coming out of her infected skin, nor the red bump. We have no clue what this could be, we are paying a lot of money on prescription food, antibiotics, allergy meds, vet visits. We don't know what the heck else to do. Hoping someone on here has gone through the same thing? Before we go to the vet in the morning, hoping someone is able to shed some light on the questions to ask or suggestions for our vet? Any help would be appreciated- we just want her to be happy! For additional context, she sleeps on an elevated cot so her skin can breathe. We brush her often, she doesn't eat any other food/treats. Help 😭 she's 3 years old and weighs 98 lbs.

My dog has these black splotchs. Seems like he has it on back of his front legs and back legs where he rest on them, but also near base of tail. I thought it was normal but realized could be a sign of something else

Update- Thanks for replies everyone. I do have tile floors, they never looked bad but after vicious heat wave the last couple months looked extra dry and crackly but no bleeding. Ill try some balm.

🧠 Behavior & Health Should I be worried about my dog?

So yesterday (10/21), I was at school when my mom texted me that her friend was going to pick me up because she had to bring our dog to emergencies. She told me she couldn't stop shaking and her eyes were really stretched out. She's been better since yesterday, but she keeps being a little bit nervous. They gave her medicine, it's like a type of liquid, I haven't checked it out yet. That seemed to work.

This is a little bit about her. She is an Italian greyhound mixed with a chihuahua, she's 2 years old, and she's pretty small, a little bit bigger than a chihuahua.

Can someone tell me if I should be worried about her and do something about it?

🩺 Symptom Check High ALKP, low RETIC-HBG and Excessive thirst/urine

Hi all,

Need your advice on this matter or just anything really. My 14 year old female dog is going through some health issues for the past month and I am so worried that she may have Cushing, diabetes, cancer or other. Although, the doctor ruled out some stuff but I am unsure.

Here is a timeline, sorry it’s a lot I know. But it’s the best way I can explain what’s going on.

ER visit on 9/06/26-Lily was vomiting in the morning, didn’t eat and then had a massive diarrhea with blood. The ER vet stated she had ā€œGastroenteritisā€ and gave her probiotic ā€œVisbiomeā€ for 7 days(2 caps a day). I only did 3 days because I noticed she was wanting to poop more and thought she felt better after 2 days.

VET visit on 9/16/26- lily started having a UTI. Her first morning pee kinda smelled and she wanted to frequently pee. She wasn’t peeing much either. She was drinking a lot of water. The doctor did a urinalysis and ruled UTI. He gave her ā€œEnrofloxinā€ for 14 days. She completed the full doses and was feeling a lot better after like 6-7 days. No frequent urination or excessive water drinking.

VET visit on 10/17/26-lily started drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot around 10/14/26 and pooped semi hard with some blood. I only saw blood on 2 poop walks and then it went away. Her pee didn’t smell, just very diluted. Took her to the doctor for bloodwork and follow up urinalysis. No UTI detected but pee was very diluted. Her ALKP was high at 342 and RETIC-HBG low at 21.5. Per dr no diabetes, kidney issues. It could be stress. He gave her probiotic for 14 days. I changed her food to Hills Physician Sensitive stomach on 10/18/26 and started giving the probiotics on 10/21/26.

10/22/26- she’s still drinking a lot of water and peeing a lot. This morning she seemed a bit sad. Still eating, walking and everything else is normal….

Any advice please :(

šŸ’¬ Discussion My rescue dog, originally from Spain, has recently been diagnosed with leishmaniasis, Stage II, substage A

My rescue dog, originally from Spain, has recently been diagnosed with leishmaniasis, Stage II,
substage A. Thankfully, the vet says his kidney profile is currently normal, with no kidney changes.

His symptoms have mainly been skin problems, scabbing, hair loss and some reduced stamina on walks. We’ve been told he’ll need treatment with miltefosine and long-term allopurinol, alongside regular blood and urine monitoring.

I’m feeling quite overwhelmed and scared about what this means for his future. I understand it’s a chronic condition and relapses are possible, but I’d really appreciate hearing from people whose dogs have lived well with it.

How have your dogs responded to treatment? Have they been able to enjoy a good quality of life for years?

I’d especially love to hear positive experiences from owners of dogs diagnosed at Stage II.

Thank you ā¤ļø

🩺 Symptom Check Redness around carpal pads? šŸ˜”

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everybody, reaching out about my dogs carpal pads. He is new to me as of about a month ago and is an overall super sweet boy. I noticed that he occasionally has a little limp and wasn’t sure if it was from an old injury or new.

As I was looking at his paws this evening and noticed the area around his carpal pads looks slightly red and a little raw? Not really any active blood but just looks a little sensitive in general. When touching by it, he didn’t seem in too much pain but I could definitely tell he was slightly uncomfortable.

He is a year and three months old, 39lb, and I am pretty sure that he is a pitty/red heeler mix but overall loves to run hard, be active, play fetch etc leading me to believe that may be the cause of the redness and maybe some over play? tough because he definitely needs to get that physical energy out but i definitely don’t want him to be hurting.

Any advice on what to do or anyone seen this before with their dogs?

🩺 Symptom Check Will my dog’s chest hair grow back?

My boy Finn is a ~5yo male we think border collie and English setter mix. He weighs about 65-70lbs. He has always had a very thick floofy ā€œruffā€ or ā€œmaneā€ on his lower neck extending down his chest. For the past few weeks that hair has been thinning and now you can even see his pink skin peeking through.

He has a harness but hardly ever wears it. He is post heartworm treatment but otherwise seems perfectly healthy. He has no other symptoms at all and no recent changes.

The skin beneath the hair appears healthy. There’s no flaking, scale, redness etc.

Our vet is stumped and so are we.

Will my dog’s chest hair grow back? Poor thing is almost chest bald.

Still trying to figure out how to upload photos, standby

I've always used Frontline, but have had to spend hundreds on this new rescue (in just 3 weeks!) and need to save $ where I can.

Not interested in the Seresto collar after researching it.

What do you all think of the Advantix?

Anything else you'd recommend? I plan to ask my Vet, but want to get a consensus here first.

Thank you!

Groaning sound from toy poodle

My 6 year old neutered toy poodle has been making groaning sounds lately and yelping when I touch his chest, I can still pick him up but occasionally he will yelp so loud in pain.

When we went to the vet they said he was completely fine and couldn’t find anything wrong with him. He still eats and drinks normally just can’t jump on anything. They have prescribed him pamol.

🦓 Senior Dog Care Post care senior THR

Hi there my 7.5 year old retired service pup. just had his R THR(picking him up tonight) , he’s an XL in height not weight. Initially they were telling us 4 week recovery timeline, now they called today to tell us 8-12 weeks.
They also told us there is no need to be concerned that we have marble and wood floors if we are walking with him…..
I’m a little skeptical as I have seen him (pre) often slip on the floors(dislocating his hips, and then hopping till it slid back in) I purchased some foam gym mats and it’s not enough coverage
Should I be concerned or trust that he ā€œshould be fineā€ (I dont love that)
Additionally any useful advice and time frames from owners who have gone through this what was helpful what they wish they would have know etc healing

šŸ’¬ Discussion White pitbull mix allergy help

Hey guys, this is my first Reddit post so bear with me, I’m sorry if I miss anything or if it is all over the place.

My dogs breed is: 42.6% American pitbull terrier, 28.5% chihuahua, 13% rat terrier, 8.2% super mutt, 7.7% American bulldog. He is all white with one brown spot.

I adopted a dog from the shelter a year and a half ago. I immediately noticed the itchiness and asked about it. They gave him cytopoint and it helped at first, then when it wore off the second injection did nothing. I have not tried apoquel because my thought process is that I would rather find the cause and source than mask the issue, but if that isn’t correct then please let me know and I will try it. Since then, over the last year and a half we have tried so much. We cut chicken out of his diet as well as grains. He eats Kirkland Salmon and Sweet Potato kibble. In the morning he gets 2 droppers full of Healthy Petz liquid collagen and 1.5 Zyrtec (recommended by a vet friend). Recently stopped Zyrtec when I ran out of it. At night, he gets 1 pump of Native Pet omega oil and 2 Finn allergy and itch chewables. We bathe him every other week with Duoxo S3 and apply duoxo s3 foam after he dries. We try to wipe him down almost daily with pet friendly wipes. We rinse his ears with an ear wash after bathing. I’m not sure any of this really helps, sometimes it seems better for a bit then goes back to normal.

Overall, it’s not as bad as it could be. But his problem areas are always his rear end. He doesn’t lick his paws as much as other dogs with allergies, but he hates when his paws are touched, and his ears sometimes bother him. It’s mostly his skin is so itchy all over. It seems like he licks his behind raw to the point it’s bald, but is very itchy anytime we scratch him anywhere. He’ll get scabs sometimes from licking and we apply topical antibiotic ointment from the vet when that happens.

His Embark DNA and allergy test said his biggest allergen is environmental and I believe it, but it is a problem year round. When we take him to the in-laws house, they have a yard and he always comes home super inflammed to the point it takes weeks to calm down. We live in an apartment and our dog park is turf but our morning walks involve grassy areas too.

What can I do next? I’m so lost and feel so bad for him he seems so uncomfortable. Thank you in advance for any tips!

🄩 Diet & Nutrition 7 yr old dog has consistent diarrhea & looks dangerously low weight!

hi! i have a 7 year old Rottweiler/beagle mix. i have been dealing with my 7 yr old dogs health for quite some time now. in the past, she has always struggled food wise. typically it’s hard to get her to eat a full meal. however for the past 6 months or so, she has dealt with massive amounts diarrhea, from fully wet to a consistent ā€˜soft serve’ stool. she’s been to the vet numerous times, has taken many tests that have all came back negative. (no parasites or anything of that nature). we have tried boiled chicken and rice, prescription food, GI blends, you name it— we have more than likely tried it. her weight looks increasingly low, although her vet says she hasn’t lost that much weight. probably mainly muscle mass? i can see her ribs clear as day!! she is not keeping in the nutrition she needs, as she poops upwards of 3/4 times a day. she literally cannot keep it in.

her behavior has changed, she acts as though she is starving (i mean, climbing on the coffee table, pulling things off of the counter, and knocking over our trashcan to get scraps which she has NEVER done before). she has grown more temperamental and has even acted as if she was lunging at me before a few times.

i am at a complete loss as to what to do. if the tests aren’t coming back with anything, but nothing is working, what can i do? i feel so bad for her, literally crying every single night for her. i love her more than anything in the world, she’s my baby, i don’t want to see her go through this any longer.

should i just try a completely wet diet? it’s the only thing i haven’t tried due to always hearing it doesn’t have enough nutrients. please if you can think of anything, please help! i’ll spend all the money in the world on her if necessary, but unfortunately i don’t have it. with all the vet bills already and the amount of ā€˜trials and errors’ i’ve done, it’s definitely taken a toll.

🐶 Puppy Health Puppy has recurring diarrhea and constipation despite normal test results — looking for advice!

We got our puppy at the end of June, and his stomach was perfectly fine until his most recent round of vaccinations. Shortly afterward, he started having bouts of bad diarrhea and constipation, and it’s been an ongoing, on-and-off issue ever since.
We’ve taken him to the vet numerous times and have done parasite testing, fecal testing, and other testing, but everything has come back normal.
He was originally on chicken-based puppy food, so we switched him to a sensitive stomach salmon-based puppy food. After the switch, his stool finally seemed to regulate, and we thought we had figured it out. Unfortunately, the diarrhea randomly returned late last week.
The confusing thing is that he otherwise seems completely fine. He has plenty of energy, is eating and drinking normally, and has no vomiting or signs of lethargy. We also don’t give him any human food.
I’m starting to feel really discouraged because we keep trying to figure out what’s wrong, but nothing seems to give us a lasting answer.
Has anyone else dealt with something similar with their puppy? Did you eventually figure out the cause or find something that helped? I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if your puppy had recurring GI issues despite normal test results. Thank you :,)

🩺 Symptom Check My Chihuahua is sick and I'm really worried

Hi, I hope you're doing well!

I’d like to share my situation. In March of this year, my 10-year-old Chihuahua developed an intestinal infection caused by bacteria—likely contracted from pigeon droppings near the park where she goes for walks. When she first got sick, she began vomiting and passing blood (literally); her stool turned into an orange-colored, foul-smelling liquid that she couldn't control. We took her to the vet, and she received treatment. What could be the cause of this? Since yesterday, she has been showing similar symptoms—though without the bloody stool or bloody vomit. She is vomiting, but the vomit has a very strong, fecal-like odor. We are quite worried, especially since we are going through a difficult financial period, and I am reaching out for your help to figure out what to do. She vomited all day yesterday.

Today, after I gave her the anti-nausea medication she was prescribed previously, she seemed fine—until about half an hour ago, when she vomited twice, and the vomit again had that strong, fecal odor. She is currently stable; she’s playing, she ate this morning, and her urine appears normal. She hasn’t had a bowel movement in two days, though everything was normal the day before that. An AI tool suggested it might be an obstruction—which would explain the odor—but she hasn’t been outside, nor has she eaten anything from outside the house. I’m not sure if it’s a recurrence of the previous infection; however, her blood tests were fine back then, which makes me even more concerned. A year ago, I lost another dog to respiratory failure caused by a congenital condition, and I am terrified of going through that again. My mother is currently giving her painkillers, medication for gastritis, and an anti-nausea drug while we wait for her to be seen by a veterinarian.

Last night and this morning she didn't vomit but she didn't sleep.

What do you think this could be?
