Estranged teenage daughter: how do you handle it?
My teenage daughter is living full-time with her mother right now because of reasons I’m not still 100% sure on. We’ve tried to do family therapy and I’ve tried to talk to my daughter about the divorce and also give her her space while trying to connect with her over her interests, such as music. Family therapy has been useless because she doesn’t want to participate and the family therapist didn’t do anything to actually dive into the issues. She’s OK going with her mom, but doesn’t want to do anything with me.
I can’t get anything from this kid and she is just outright ignoring me on any attempt I make to reach out. I’ve seen her maybe five times in the last three months because her mom controls access to her and then my daughter just doesn’t respond to my texts or my IG messages. I try not to send too many but I check in every week or so just to let her know that I’m thinking of her, but it’s now getting to the point where she’s lying to get out of hanging out with me.
I asked if she wanted to do lunch last week, and while she originally said yes, she then told me 30 minutes later that never mind she’s tired. I was a little taken back but didn’t push too much and then it turns out she lied to me 100% about that because she had to go to a funeral out of town. I don’t understand why she lied about it, but I didn’t get upset or angry at her.
I don’t know what to do anymore because she is cutting me out of her life at this point, and I don’t know what’s going on. Her mom seems to know what the issue is, but she won’t tell me. Her mom won’t help at all in the situation and I’m pretty confident that there’s been some parental alienation going on, but I don’t know how to overcome that if I never get to see her.
I don’t know how to prove that I just want what’s best for her and that I do love her if she won’t even respond to texts about her being sick or lying to me about funerals.
How do you guys have been through this handle this? How am I supposed to reconnect with her if I’m being shut out? i’ve only got a few years left until she’s 18 and I don’t wanna miss any more of her life. I’m 100% willing to take ownership of mistakes I’ve made in the past but I’m not going to just continue throwing things out to her that might be issues and then have her say “yes you suck for that but that’s not the issue. “ because that’s something she would 100% do.
