Discussion Lack of endurance in the playoffs
I haven't seen this mentioned too much, but I think a big part of the let-down in Game 7 vs. the Cavs last year was due to lack of endurance. I think this gets lumped in with "experience," but I recall greats like Isiah and Joe talking about conditioning yourself to not just playing 82 games, but 90, 100 games and what a big difference those extra games made, especially for a young team. Last year's squad had never made it that far in the playoffs before and each game you tack on to the end of the 82 game regular season is exponentially harder than the previous one. I think we'll see a better conditioned, more experienced, and more focused team in the postseason this year who are collectively ready to take that next step to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Discussion Grand Rapids Pistons fans are suffering
A lot of bars have DIRECTV and other cable networks that don’t carry scripp sports.
YouTube TV doesn’t cover it in Grand Rapids
Super lame to see bars not able to easily turn on a game. I thought this change was going to make things easier.
No one has basic antennas with only local channels which is the only way you can get the games for free out here
edit I paid for DAZN. I get that antennas get the game for free (which is great) at home. But cable and streaming services (aka YouTube TV) don’t carry the game in Grand Rapids like it does in metro Detroit which blows

Discussion How to watch?
I think I heard these games are going to be on channel 20. I have YouTube tv, and I guess they don't have it. I don't have an antenna right now. Do I need one you watch the pistons this year or is there some other way? I frankly wasn't worried about it until they resigned Duren, and now I think they'll be pretty good.
EDIT: play, thanks everyone. Did not realize there was another service that wants $20. Think I'll but a cheap antennae since I think channel 20 is pet easy to get that way.

Detroit Pistons (30.5)
It’s about the free throws. The Pistons fouled the bejesus out of everyone, ranking 30th in opponent free throw rate last season—with the gap between Detroit and the no. 29 team (Washington) about as large as that between Washington and league average.
It is the accepted cost of the Pistons’ identity, and at least they reap the benefits—tangible and not—that tilt the equation in their favor: forcing the most turnovers, ruling the glass, intimidating their opponents, and exacting a meaningful physical toll. It works on the other end, too: Detroit ranked fifth in free throw rate on offense.
But that means lots of breaks and voluminous complaining to the officials, which knocked Detroit down at least four spots.
A good chunk of Detroit’s fear factor—and the tingling possibility of a fight—left with Isaiah Stewart. (Ditto with its rim protection.) But Paul Reed is no shrinking violet, and he brings a funky offensive repertoire—soft flip shots, half hooks, the occasional malformed 3-pointer.
With Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren signed long-term, Detroit begins in earnest the journey of crafting a contender around two non-shooters—and a pick-and-roll conductor, Cade Cunningham, who could use more breathing space. Cunningham is the league’s closest facsimile of Luka Doncic—a burly, tall burrower who makes music in the dead of the paint with shoulder turns and eye fakes.
Winning big with two core non-shooters is hard—no path for cowards. Teams in the past 15 years have made the Finals that way, but in almost every case at least two of the following three criteria were emphatically true—and often all three:One of those non-shooters, if not both—think Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo—was the team’s on-ball fulcrum. The other was often his screening partner. Helping away from them was difficult, since they were on the ball;
The team featured one of the five best players in the NBA;
One of the non-shooters at least positioned himself as a shooter would, hanging in the corners or on the wing. (Think Derrick Jones Jr. or P.J. Tucker.)
Right now, Detroit is 0-for-3 but making progress on two items. Cunningham ranks somewhere in the back half of the league’s top 10 players. Duren is a fulcrum as a screen setter, but opponents took his paint game away in the playoffs. Some of that owed to Duren’s limitations, including an inability to exploit switches. Some was because Thompson lingered low, clogging the lane.
For this to work, both Thompson and Duren have to be more dangerous on the ball—Duren as a passing hub and face-up driver, Thompson as both screener and ball handler in the two-man game.
Detroit was right to pay both and give this a roll. Both are young, and improving. The trio of Cunningham, Duren, and Thompson soaks up “only” about 70 percent of the cap. The Pistons may not have room in the medium-term future—they took their last real free agency shot on Austin Reaves—but they still have flexibility. This is not a case of two players taking up 70 percent of the cap, or three accounting for 110 percent. Thompson’s deal should be tradable at plus value. The jury is out on Duren’s, but I’d bet on it being movable at neutral value. The Pistons still have all their picks and swaps.
Thompson teleports on defense, everywhere and nowhere at once. Duren dunks everything; the Pistons led the league in slams last season. He is getting meaner, cognizant of the pain he can inflict.
Ron Holland snags Stewart’s mantle as enforcer, and also might be playing for his future in Detroit. After wayward stops in Utah and with the Clippers, John Collins gets a chance to reassert himself as a winning role player—hitting 3s, rebounding, maybe playing some backup center.
The red-and-blue scheme is classic, and Detroit shows proper fealty to its simple words-on-ball logo—including in transposing the arcing edges of the ball on either sideline adjacent to the center circle.

That’s a chef’s kiss touch. More good Pistons art is coming.

Discussion Pistons Still Need to Make a Trade
The team is on the right trajectory and made some smart moves this offseason, albeit I still don’t understand why Beef Stew isn’t on this roster (big guys who can shoot and play elite rim defense don’t grow on trees) but I think they’re still fundamentally lacking offensive creation in a way that prevents them from being real contenders. Cade is beyond taxed as the only legitimate playmaker in the starting 5 and I think his horrendous turnover numbers are partially due to this offensive burden. I would love for Ausar to prove me wrong, but I don’t think he’s gonna be the guy who develops to fill that void and I don’t think Duren will threaten any defense enough to be effective at volume if he has the ball in his hands more than 12 feet from the basket. What they need is another creator but because of Ausar/Duren they have to be an elite or almost elite shooter, especially since the only real spot that can change in the starting lineup is Robinson at the 2. I have a list of targets, ranked in order of desirability from the Pistons POV, but I tried to keep it realistic. I focused on guards because any forward who can dribble, pass and shoot at the level that would make us a real contender is probably untouchable.
1. Darius Garland
I think he’s about to have a monster season. He would immediately become the best off the dribble shooter on the team. He’s too small to ever be even a good defender, but Robinson is already far from a stalwart and he was a part of great defensive lineups in Cleveland. This would relieve pressure from Cade bringing the ball up, which is when most of his turnovers seem to happen (at least off eye test). His availability depends on the Clippers‘ goals this season but we have contracts and picks and they need picks. If they want to maximize wins to pacify an irate fan base he’s probably off the table.
2. Ryan Rollins
The (prime) Nic Batum of Davion Mitchells. The Mugsy Bogues of Tayshaun Princes. The Al-Faruq Aminu of Dame Lillards? He’s probably the most underrated guard in the league by national conversation if you go by production versus name recognition. He‘s got length, defends AND rebounds at an above average level for his position. Capable catch and shoot threat, will occasionally pull up and has a lot more to his drive game than people think, can hit difficult layups, finish through contact and occasionally make a high level pass from deep in the paint. Fits our defensive identity and would theoretically be a very simple fit. Maybe not enough juice on his own to maintain a league average offense if playing without Cade on the floor too.
3. Zach Lavine
He can shoot. He can hunt his own shot. He can shoot. Good first step. He can shoot. Zach Lavine is the Michelob Golden Light of shooting guards. Hardly anyone’s first, second, or third choice and can’t give more than he’s got but is undeniably what you signed up for. Mich GL is a beer and Zach Lavine is a shooting guard. Pretty sure we tried to offer him a contract once or were in trade talks. He would undeniably boost the offense, he’s a bigger body than any of the two guys mentions before and he makes good passes when playing with pace. I didn’t check the contract math so I’m unsure if we could really make it work but I think he would prefer to contribute to some winning basketball at a high level before his career ends. Sacramento is unpredictable so who knows what his availability or price would be but he would provide Nos to these Pistons for sure.
4. Tyler Herro
Similar to Zach Lavine. Shooter with some off the dribble juice, proven in the playoffs would alleviate some Cade possessions but is not a guy who runs an offense or facilitates at a high level. His presence would still probably take the offensive from decent to very good, but he is also not on a small contract. Might be out to prove something after moving on from the only NBA home he’s ever known. I doubt the Bucks see him as a building block of the future so much as an asset to acquire the stone to shape said block but if he’s playing very well or is very hot from 3 for the first month and a half of the season his price in trade negotiations could reach beyond what the Pistons can realistically offer.
5. A Portland Bench Guy
Dame and Ja are starting in Portland (we’ll see how that goes) leaving Scoot Henderson and Jrue Holiday to split minutes off the bench. Neither is a perfect fit (Jrue would’ve been maybe 2 seasons ago but I think he’s lost a step) but if Portland is really feeling the minutes crunch at guard with Shaedon Sharpe’s return on the horizon either guy could be available for a relatively cheap price. Scoot acquitted himself nicely in his playoff debut and has a ton of ink spilled on his off court character and dedication to the game. If we traded for him I would see it almost as picking up where we left off with Jaden Ivey and I think people forgot how good Ivey was looking in Bickerstaff’s system before Cole Anthony ruined his career with a leg dive. Jrue just does Jrue shit, winning shit, he’ll guard anyone, initiate any kind of offense and can catch and shoot at a respectable clip.
Thoughts would be appreciated if you disagree or feel like I missed any obvious candidates or even think that we are already contenders as constructed and don’t need any additional help.

News This is a playoff matchup I would love to see. The Pacers try to tire you out by making you play fast like you’re in a track meet, and the Detroit Pistons suffocate offenses with their size and strength. I would really like to see which team imposes their will on the game.

Image Cade 5th best creator in the league 🤔
Is he ranked too high, too low, or right where he should be?
I feel like he’s right where he should be. Now he can take this season to ascend above those in front of him in real time while the world watches. It, to me, is a reason why Cade’s saying that we’re slept on

Discussion Anyone else buy an antenna for the first time in 20 years?
I can’t remember the last time I used an antenna. Maybe 2005?? But Pistons got me spending $20 to get a season of basketball. Is this an unselfish move by the team to put the games on local TV? Or was this the best financial move for the team? Either way I’m liking it.

Discussion [Patterson] Asked Jalen Duren if he agreed with Cade that the Pistons were being slept on: “They’re going to continue to sleep on us. They’re not going to believe in what happened last season and the success we’ve had. Like he said, it’s kind of like the city, an underdog type of city.”
