Off-Topic catch me up

I haven’t tuned in to a Destiny stream since Nov 24’ (I got a job).
BESIDES THE LAWSUIT,
what interpersonal drama slop have I missed? So far I’ve noticed the Aba and Pisco bridges have gone kaput, anything else?

Bonus: any particularly interesting debates or appearances that would be worth a watch? Thanks guys

Non-Political News/Discussion No, we shouldn't call them stalkers

The term stalker is way too insufficient.

Most stalkers act alone, they don't form entire networks of people reinforcing and rewarding each other's fixation.

They also typically do not expand their targets to friends, family members, romantic partners, or anyone who's remotely interacted with the main target.

They also don't usually shift from just obsessing over their targets into very deliberately trying to destroy their reputation, career, or relationships.

And finally they don't usually escalate into doxxing, swatting, contacting relatives, dragging their children into the harassment, sending someone's location to a hostile military, or mailing human skulls.

These people are more like a part of unhinged harassment communities.

Off-Topic How do you have motivation to do anything when at max-level dooming about everything?

I feel like I have no motivation for anything because it feels like the world is on its last gasping breaths. I have never felt more depressed.

Global warming is so fucked it's irreversible and unstoppable, we're already on a runaway event that will kill everyone, most likely in my lifetime.

If that doesn't happen, AI will either turn the world into a Minority Report-tier monarchistic police state or just end up killing everyone. Even people like Sam Altman are saying we most likely have less than 10 years left.

If that doesn't happen, then we'll have WW3 level oil wars as countries become more and more radicalized and isolated, EU migrant crises x10 happen everywhere in the world, and prices for everything spiral out of control for everyone because the price of everything is connected to the price of oil.

I feel like it's all just over, I'm not even talking about the next election or whatever. I mean just life in general.

How do you all manage to get through life without feeling like it's all pointless? Like you missed the bus?

Off-Topic I wrote some fiction and Im looking for feedback.

Im fairly certain a lot of us like dark fantasy stuff and so I figured maybe you guys might be interested in helping me.

This is the first creative project I've been able to finish in, like, forever and I feel motivated to continue. Its just one chapter and its short. You might remember me from the Insomnia post a week or so ago. This is what I've been working on. I get no money from this (Yet(hopefully)).

Just so you know, I swap past and preset tense a bunch. It's on my to do list.

https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/198422/the-rake

I'm trying to find the line, so question: Everything in this writing is my own creation. The concepts, the scenes, the events. Is using Google search (and thus, AI) as a thesaurus acceptable? I have a pantheon that hasn't been incorporated into the story yet. Its derived from my understanding of modern physics, but I did use AI to confirm my understanding of those concepts. The imagery and portfolios and lore of these gods are entirely my own. Is this too far? The farthest I've considered going is to be presented with suggestions to get an idea, but not to use them. merely spark my own idea from them. Not rip right from it. This might be a bit too far for me, but i want a second opinion on how and where to draw the line. As it stands, I just use it to confirm facts.

Thank you for your help.

Geopolitics News/Discussion Why Humanity Might Have to Declare War on AI

Thumbnail
youtube.com

New William Spaniel video takes a break from his usual analysis of the Ukraine-Russia war, NATO, and human-on-human violence in general to address the other most pressing topic at the forefront of our cultural zeitgeist: artificial intelligence-induced existential threat to humanity by way of a monomaniacal paperclip-maximizing superintelligence.

Despite the potential for the title and above description to trigger just about everyone on all sides of the debate, he takes a relatively novel and lighthearted approach while remaining largely agnostic on the debate itself. He frames the scenario through the lens of geopolitics to use as a jumping-off point in order to informally model and analyze a hypothetical human-machine war through the framework of crisis bargaining theory. The result is about as inoffensive as can be expected from the topic and should be relevant to anyone with an interest in game theory, geopolitics, crisis bargaining theory, artificial intelligence, and existential risk.

Description from the video:

Thanks to the Center for AI Safety for supporting this video with a grant: https://slowdown.ai/

There is a growing concern about a forthcoming conflict between AI and humanity. Today, we explore that possibility, extending what we know about conflict generally to the realm of robots. Just like wars between humans, wars between humans and AI are costly. Therefore, settlements exist in principle that ought to leave both parties better off. This video examines the implications of that claim, what might actually cause an AI war, and why the fascination with war may hide the real problem.

Political News/Discussion If you’re an independent or leftist withholding your vote from Democrats to make a point about your own purity, read this slowly:

Everyone on the left is aware of the harm caused to people around the world, from Palestine to Sudan, Congo to Myanmar, Ukraine to Tigray. We vote for the people most likely to do something about it. The UN has gone soft, and America, under Trump, has forgotten it was one of the founders. The world has agreed to international law and leaders should be held accountable for the harm they cause.

Withholding your vote over a slow-moving single issue ends up clearing the runway for the very authoritarian regime you claim to oppose. The Trump administration has made its peace with hate and has no intention of bettering the world. Preach abstention as moral purity and you have delivered the election to the conservative as surely as the voter who checked the box.

Non-Political News/Discussion The Russian Bot Apocalypse

Thumbnail
youtube.com
4 Upvotes

New video by Patrick Boyle about Ukraine's drone strikes on the Yandex server infrastructure and the supposed decrease in bot activity. I thought dgg might appreciate some additional context and perspective.

Some key points from the video:

  • Evidence for decrease in disinformation malicious bot activity is largely exaggerated or made up
  • most of the decreased bot activity is mundane, like search engine crawlers, not disinformation or outrage campaigns
  • the strikes are still very effective at damaging Russia's digital infrastructure
  • state-driven misinformation is only one piece of the bot-created outrage campaign. Another large piece is political rage-bait posting from citizen's from third world countries to create ad-revenue
  • bots themselves have a hard time creating the reach to make posts go viral; most posts that reach millions of views are shared by a relatively small group of super engaged authentic sharers

The key points are just from the top of my head after watching the video. I might have gotten things wrong, so feel free to correct me.

Political News/Discussion Liberal beats MAGA, Liberal beats Leftists...

...MAGA beats Leftists?

I've been slowly introducing showing my friend to addiction of the world of political debates. I've started with Jubilee's SurroundedTM videos and CheckMateTM videos and she loves them - which is is actually changing my mind about the value of this kinda slop tbf.

My friend now asked if there's debates where conservative/MAGA have humilated liberals or leftists. WITH FACTS. I can't think of any because Liberals always have the most correct positions.

Anyone know of debates where a MAGAt wins against a far lefty at least? Tryna add some variety to the constant Lib winning.

Drama Stalkers and Harassers

Hearing this topic for a year of Snarkers. I hear all these “solutions” of blacklists, whitelists, content nukes, advisers warnings. At what point do you gather victims of the harassers and go to lawmakers with this? It is obvious that regulations have not caught up to social media and streaming. Internet stalker is also an issue that extends beyond the parasocial snarkers of streamers.

Talking to lawmakers can get the ball rolling for laws that target directly to internet harassment and stalking. Either laws need to be made to protect of the anonymity of the internet, and make doxing illegal, or fully take the vail off and have social media accounts required for personal locations. With laws being stuck in limbo, makes a weird middle where stalking and harassing is overlooked due to the effort that would be required to investigate.

A sheriff in volusia county, Mike Chitwood, went on the spree and got several of his personal snarks nabbed and extradited to Daytona. Than you have others on the internet who will be victims of the same harassment be ignored because they don’t have the resources that a sheriff does. Something has to give.
