After three years of me telling my family grandma has dementia, my mom finally agrees she has it
I moved in with my husband about 3 years ago, he lives 15 minutes from my grandma. So being a housewife, i was able to go over to her house weekly as she as i are very close which was nice since I use to live 50 miles from her. While in our visits I noticed things like her forgetfulness, misplacing things, getting overwhelmed, losing her train of thought, thinking we're in a different time period, believing I was somebody else. This started about a year into the visits. Then, she started accusing me of stealing from her on multiple occasions. I did not steal from her, and she often accused me of stealing things that I would never want to steal, like, cheap jewelry that didnt fit me, and everyday kitchen utensils. Eventually all the stuff was found. And I never got an apology. I kept telling my family that she had dementia. As I had been a caregiver in my profession and have seen it many times with family and professionally. My mom insisted it was a protein deficiency, and that's why she was acting that way. My mom was in denial. But in the last six months, things have really taken a turn for the worst. She sleeps a lot during the day. She's falling way more than she used to. She can't cook, clean, or take care of herself. She is only eating soup. She's losing weight, and she was already at a 107 lbs and now she's down to 101 lbs. Which is not good. My parents are remodeling their home so they couldn't have my birthday party at their house. So we had it at hers, but we told her, do not do anything for it, mom would take care of everything. What does she do? She decides to make devil eggs. She throws out her back and then she's out sick in pain for a week, she's gone to urgent care and she is currently in the er. She will most likely be admitted and will have to do impatient rehab. She's incredibly stubborn and doesn't think she's as sick as she is. She's not drinking enough fluids. She's not eating enough of the right foods. The only person who was caring for her daily is my disabled aunt who can barely take care of herself, let alone my grandma. We are currently trying to work to get her in a facility but that takes time. We're trying to get my aunt in a facility as well. My dad still doesn't believe she has dementia. Because his mother had it and it was very hard on him to deal with that especially towards the end of her life. My other grandma passed in 2024 and my father's finally feeling like himself again. I know, losing my grandma is going to be a big grief for my family for everyone in it, including myself. But I feel like we're already losing her as she's alive. And we've been losing her for the past three years. But no one but me wants to admit that. As we've been dealing with this for the past 3 years, I feel like im losing my mind. I thought we were going to lose her to the stomach cancer 5 years ago that came back twice but she beat that. You can't beat this.
