How much better did Deji need to be to actually beat Jake Paul August 25th 2018 in their match?
So obviously, this gets brought up from time to time, but Deji genuinely came pretty close to pulling off an upset against Jake Paul. It was entirely possible, and the general consensus seems to be that several things held Deji back from winning, many of which could have been prevented. Between undertraining, changing training camps, and, of course, his poor cardio during the fight, there were multiple factors that ultimately led to his corner throwing in the towel.
However, I think the reason people still talk about this fight is that they were genuinely shocked by how competitive Deji remained despite having so much working against him and, in many ways, letting himself down. Don’t get me wrong, his cardio especially let him down, but Jake’s cardio wasn’t exactly amazing either. For all we know, had Deji approached the fight differently, he might have been able to win with the skills he already had. That might be a stretch, though, because Jake would probably have needed to gas out first.
So I guess what I’m really asking is: How much would we need to buff Deji for him to beat Jake that night? Would giving him insane cardio alone be enough, or would he have needed better ring IQ as well? You could argue that Deji’s ring IQ was already relatively close to Jake’s, which is why I think stamina might have been the biggest deciding factor. Ultimately, though, I think the most important thing would have been improving his work ethic and taking his training more seriously. If Deji had done that, I honestly think he could have given Jake a serious beating that night, if not outright won.
Obviously, that would have changed a lot about the storyline we have today. I’m sure Jake would have been embarrassed, but we might have actually gotten the Soulja Boy and Chris Brown fights. Deji could have continued building himself up, eventually worked toward a rematch, and potentially ended up in a position similar to where he is now. But that’s a discussion for another time.
I’m pretty curious to hear everyone’s opinions on this. What do you think Deji needed to change to beat Jake Paul that night, and how much would that victory have changed the trajectory of both their careers?
