Community moved from CachyOS to Debian

im a simple guy from iran with limited and resticted internet and restricted money and everything, so when windows was abusing my laptop for no reason and i heard linux makes your hardware live for longer i decided no more windows and switched.

long story short cachyos is Super Duper hyped and everyone says to download it. but its so bad and unstable with its updates, literally everysingle one of them broke my laptop and i have a diploma in computer software and hardware and i am the most tech savy guy i know so if my skills are not enough idk who's is?

so i searched for a more stable distro and found out debian is considered the best by literally everyone next to ARCH. so i downloaded debian and the first big difference is that debian lets you to have as many WM as you want witch is super amazing cuz if one of them breaks down you can just use another one and also you can just use your desktop however you want, witch is great to have this freedom, but i use kde plasma everyday anyways. also it just easily lets you use kde and gnome apps in eatch others workflow no problem

its also so light that i downloaded it on my sisters old laptop and even that garbage works now awsome!

and i have yet to see if there is any difference between gaming on debian and cachyos other than that it toke me 1 week to install steam on debian witch was also true for cachyos since i first tried hypraland (worst mistake ever)

now these are the things i learned thus far

ricing is BS.

while downloading linux i was obsessed with ricing and making my own desktop. but after using linux for 1 month or 2 now io can say it honestly base kde or cosmos or gnome all look good enough for me and anything more than that is just a waste if time so dont even think a out ricing.

second is that arch isnt that difference from debian for a noobie like me other than the fact that its gonna break down more and worse

third: please dont accidentaly format your external drives 😭 that shet toke me so long to recover i nearly lost my childhood photos and all my documents and so much more that im not sure if i even got them back or not

forth: instead of watching youtube go and learn how to use your distro cuz youtubers just make you feel like a imbecile.

anyways thx for all of you that created debian and kde plasma and gnome and linux and firefox and all of you'll honestly you guys are the real heros.

Debian Stable Question Everything is slow

Help! I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E14 Gen 2 (CPU: Intel i7-1165G7) with 32 GB of ram instead of the 16 GB it came with. The laptop came with Windows 11 but in the past few days I installed Debian 13.7 GNOME on it because I hate Windows.

After I booted up into Debian for the first time all of GNOME's animations were laggy and Firefox was very slow. I did not expect this because on some other older computers I have Debian ran faster than Windows. The boot times were also slower than Windows but not by much. In fact I would say than it is barely usable because of the lag.

The strange part is that this morning I turned on my laptop and everything was smooth and not lagging. I think it took less than 15 seconds to boot too.

Could someone please explain why this is happening and provide a solution. Also if you have any questions about the situation feel free to ask.

Hey everyone! I just got Debian Trixie with KDE Plasma on my Dell Latitude 7280 (coming from Ubuntu) and I just love it so much. I have a small issue though: if you look close, there is a line on the top left corner of the screen that seems to be a window. It disappears when I fullscreen another app and I've rebooted many times but it wouldn't go. Can anyone help me? Thanks so much!

Switching from trixie backports to forky lts

Hello! I am gonna get a laptop that uses a panther lake processor and needs a kernel above 6.19
I currently use debian trixie LTS, and I am wondering if it would be advisable/possible to use backports until forky comes out (at which point I'd just swith to forky lts.)
All I need is the kernel, and I know how to make the .pref file to filter out everything except the kernel but I don't know if my eventual migration would be safe to do

Debian Stable Question Problems with Setting NIC configurations

I have a Minisforum NAB9 (2 RJ45 and WiFi) and loaded Debian 13 (trixie) with Cinnamon yesterday to get started building a docker host.

Everything was going fine and it found the 2 wired NIC and the WiFi.

Using the Settings > Network app, it shows the 2 wired devices (enp2s0 & enp3s0) and each has a different MAC address. The WiFi is listed and shows the Visible Networks.

But it seemed like it was treating the 2 wired connections as 1. If I changed the name of the 1st, the 2nd had the same name. If I used DHCP on the 1st, the 2nd had DHCP even though I wanted it "Manual".

The plan was to have NIC 1 (enp2s0) in the native LAN using DHCP and NIC 2 (enp3s0) in a private LAN (for CCTV with no access to the Internet) using a fixed IP address, no DNS and no router.

Yesterday, despite some of the weirdness with the Setup > Network app, it was all working as I expected. NIC 1 had full access to the Internet and NIC 2 could ping a device on the private LAN.

Today, there was a Debian update alert and I let it update. Now there is zero network access on either NIC. Nothing.

NIC 1 still gets a DHCP assigned address, but the "nmcli device show" displays that there is no IP4.GATEWAY and no IP4.DNS[1] or [2], those fields are --.

And enp3s0 had no IP4.?? details listed with nmcli. With the RJ45 unplugged the flag "GENERAL.STATE:" is "20 (disconnected) and with it plugged in, it is "30 (disconnected). In the Settings > Network,

If I set NIC 1 to "Manual", I can plug in all the details, and it starts working fine and nmcli shows all the correct details. But, DHCP doesn't work. It gets 1/2 the details and none of the DNS or GW.

The enp3s0 had no connection. The "enp3s0" was there, but nothing under it. I clicked the + to add a new profile and selected the MAC address of enp3s0 and filled in the IP address. But it won't ping any of the devices it would ping yesterday.

I may have FUBARed something yesterday. How can I get networking sorted (short of reinstalling from scratch)?

FWIW: I use CentOS / Redhat and now using Rocky. Maybe that should help, but usually, I'm a CLI kind of admin, and the Setting GUI seem to get in the way. I went to Debian because it was recommended for Frigate and Home Assistant.

Debian Stable Question Preparación para nueva instalación.

Saludos cordiales!

Dash to Panel issues

Post image
13 Upvotes

Having some visual issues with Dash to Panel ver. 74.

  1. The left side of the panel is not showing the web window as on the right side. I want the left side of the panel also show the window.

  2. when running fullscreen windows, they only reaches the top edge of the panel, not the bottom of the screen, so I have to adjust the size manually. How to make the window reach the bottom of the screen, behind the panel? Automatically that is, not resizing manually as i do now.

Any advice highly appreciated!

What does installing a blend actually do?

Does a Debian blend install all the software under all its metapackages? If so, that sounds extremely wasteful, since the blends have thousands of packages.

Assuming no, what does a blend actually do? Does it make some metapackages more accessible somehow? If so, that's sounds awesome.

Afaik the documentation never answers this basic question.

Can't find a graphical NFC reader, writer.

I've managed to get pcsc_scan to work. Unfortunately it's output is in Klingon and there is no man page.

I'm a bit of a retard. I can't find a graphical reader, writer in synaptic. What search term do I use to get it.

Why does it feel so good when you search for a package you need, that it's in the deb repos so you dont have to use flatpak or something else

Debian Stable Question Help! Youtube video playback has color banding?

Been struggling with this for a few months now. Despite backport updates, latest firefox-esr, still doens't fix it. Notes:

1) Color banding appears and disappears regularly.

2) It moves. Sometimes it's in thirds, as seen in the screenshot. Sometimes it's in fourths. But usually vertical.

3) Rarely ever see square blotches or horizontal banding.

System is perfectly fine under intensive games and W11 dual boot.

PSA for people affected by the bug where the latest kernel update broke keyboards on certain ASUS laptops. Fix is on the way

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1149499

I have this problem and saw other people were having it too. The bandaid is to boot into the older kernel. Another workaround is the use of `modprobe.blacklist=hid_asus` mentioned in the bug.

I think you can technically figure out how to patch that specific fix into your kernel, but I already know that can be a pain.

Anyway I guess it will be shipped in some future update, hopefully soon. Just posting here because I don't think everyone else also is following the bug

Boot TTY mode only

Hey Team,

I just completed a fresh install on a refurbished Lenovo tiny desktop, i7 gen 8, intel UHD graphic.

im booting into TTY mode only, any suggestions ? is this a graphics issue, I can see watchdog will not close upon reboot hinting to a kernel error.
