Nice overly slow fake radar sweep they've added to the map. 😂

u/Tentings 16h ago

All these years I always thought that line was the actual radar..damn

1.9k

u/vawlk 16h ago

it used to be, but now its just something they add so you don't think you are looking at a static screen. No news program uses an actual live feed from the radar anymore as the processed images look much better.

u/teraflop 15h ago edited 14h ago

Yep. This is the first video I could find showing what the live updating radar used to look like, back in the day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2G067FPHTU&t=39s

You can see the "Az" number updating in the top-right corner, showing the radar antenna's azimuth (number of degrees from north).

This was driving me crazy during some recent storms. Waiting for that sweep to cross my neighborhood, only for nothing to happen

If you look closely, the sweep does update the screen.... every five minutes or so. Pay attention during your next severe weather event and you'll see it.

I would have also guessed it was because they're getting information from multiple sources which aren't going to all update at the same time. Is that also an issue or have I missed the mark?

https://www.wsmv.com/2026/10/14/explosion-leads-large-structure-fire-gallatin-police-say/

Why does no one seem to care about the actual explosion!?? Is this it?

32

u/Emb3rF0x 7h ago

“No injuries were reported. The Gallatin Fire Chief said the homeowner had medical equipment on the property where the fire started, and several oxygen cylinders exploded from the flames.”

Yep, that’ll do it 😬

Some radars still "sweep" the sky, but they rotate much faster than this. And obviously the update of the image should happen along the line of the sweep. So this one is obviously fake.

Edit: A bit more context: All radars can only look at one part of the sky at once. It used to be that they could only look straight forward, so you had to rotate the the radar to see the entire sky. Modern radars can do tricks to look at at angle. They can change the angle they look at many times per second, effectively looking at large part of the sky all at once (on a human timeframe). But the angle is still limited, so if you want to see the entire sky you still need to either rotate the radar, or build multiple radars and put them in a circle. The latter is very expensive, so you obviously wouldn't do that for a simple weather radar.

That was really confusing me why the radar updated the image without the sweep being nearby

8

u/GLIBG10B 14h ago

Plot twist: It only looks slow due to the stroboscopic effect, but it actually updates the whole screen more than 24 times per second

I live near that area. Gallatin (just northeast of Nashville) had a garage catch fire and "stuff" inside of it blew up. They don't know what caused the fire, and they don't quite know what stuff blew up yet. The fire chief basically said it was "normal household stuff that would explode when exposed to a fire." Who knows if it was propane tanks, fuel cans, etc. Still investigating.

But Gallatin also had a house under construction blow up from a natural gas leak last year, so now they've basically started an annual trend of a home blowing up once a year or so.

360

u/EvaTheE 14h ago

Me as a gardening enthusiast with a fleet of tractors, I often store about 1 200 barrels of fuel oil in my garage, which is over my cellar in which I keep a few kilotons of ammonium fertilizer. These little explosions do sometimes happen when there is a fire or something.

118

u/whowatchestv 13h ago

My dad used to work with plants and said he’s probably on a list after the Oklahoma City bombing.

56

u/EvaTheE 13h ago edited 13h ago

Well, both that type of fertilizer and fuel are why the human population can survive at levels where we are. Before the haber-bosch process we were scraping the barrel for fertilizer and there is no way we could feed as many people we do today. And that fuel is also the only realistic way we can do all of the logistics required to do that. It's why we have had those big explosions, like Texas City and Beirut. Those two things are both needed.

That's a hug pressure wave, I would think that would be a BLEVE but the tank would have to be large to do that imo. Like the sideways tanks they have at fuel depots not the 100 gallon tanks that feed a home heating system.

20

u/wolffetti 13h ago

Right? Thats a huge response on the radar for what seems to be a pretty casual type of fire/"explosion".

I was thinking it was related to a TVA Plant or something considering what the scale appeared to be.

10

u/PXranger 13h ago

More likely a FAE, same as any normal gas leak. Proper fuel air mix in a large house can cause a massive explosion.

→ More replies (1)

47

u/Wonderful_Sock_6651 15h ago

It's entirely possible it was a propane tank.

Where my parents live there was a family who went on Vacation and had a fire at their house and it blew up their propane tank. The explosion was so severe the school across the road literally had some of its windows shattered and the front doors that were facing towards the house were smashed open from the air pressure. The house was basically deleted/levelled.

People 20 miles away heard the explosion.

It was later found out it was arson for insurance fraud but that's besides the point.

18

u/jcpham 14h ago

Back when I was a firefighter one of the first things you always check is for a propane tank and a shutoff valve. Then the power company gets called to disconnect electricity depending on where the fire is and how involved the fire is.

You learn a lot about the utility services feeding the house or you put yourself in a lot of danger by not knowing the difference between high voltage and communication wires. Not knowing there’s a huge propane tank feeding gas into the home. That kind of stuff. A lot of things can explode once fire is involved.

Pure oxygen is reasonably easy to handle safely, but it is a fucking menace.

Wow I've never seen A gun commercial in my life. But I guess probably not everyone got a ruger commercial before the video.

Edit: after reading about all the commercials you guys got it kind of seems like none of the commercials pertain to the people who got them. Which is really weird. According to Gallatin Fire Department Chief Jeff Beaman, the fire sparked in a large detached garage adjacent to Cumberland Marine Works.

“As we investigated and looked into it, we found that it was more than likely just the normal things that you find in the garage, that when they’re exposed to a fire, sometimes they do go boom,” Beaman said. “So there was nothing that we’ve heard about propane tanks or natural gas lines.”

I wonder if it is totally fake now or if it is at least still accurate to NWS dish even if they now used the final full sweep image once it is processed by NWS. I am guessing the former though since that is cheaper.

Would at least be cool if it was accurate to something IRL even if it wasn't really useful anymore.

The "radar" spinny thing is a special effect to make it look all tech. The actual radar at that location collects information using a rotating antenna, but computers compile and analyze the information in multiple atmospheric layers, in 6 to 10 minute batches. The output image is then sent to the feed used by TV stations and others for public display in a form people can easily understand.

Further information about the WSR-88D NEXRAD radar system here.

I love how this just exposed for a lot of people that the line was fake all along. Everything is a lie.

5

u/techforallseasons 15h ago

The line has always been fake - BUT at one time it did have a purpose - it indicated where the radar antenna was pointing at the moment - where the data was the freshest.

The energy reflections echoed back to the antenna would "burn" into the phosphors at that point as would linger and fade over time until the sweep swung back around.

So far nothing has come remotely close to the Halifax explosion in 1917, at 2.9 kiloton TNT it was 3.5 times more powerful then Beirut and 10x more powerful then Tianjin.

For comparison:

Tianjing was 0.3 Kt

Beirut was 0.8 Kt

Halifax was 3.4 Kt

Hirosihma was 14 Kt

Tsar Bomba was 57 000 Kt (was suppose to be 100 000 KT but the project lead had a headache and did not want any bright lights that day)

8

u/JBaecker 15h ago

Actually, Tsar Bomba has been revised down to "only" 50Mt. The Soviets encouraged the inflated estimated size of the explosion to generate fear in the West.

That's from the 14th, with the video posted yesterday. The explosion on radar in OP's video is from today.

I liked it when 90's Marc Summers decided to walk into frame. Find that flag!

u/WoodsLovelyDarkNDeep 13h ago

Where was this explosion is there a link to a news story of it happening?  When did it happen?

Get none of that instead just an animation that doesn’t even make sense based on how actual weather radar works

u/Menekineko 7h ago

I thought this was Marc Summers

Meteorologist here, with a specialty in radar.
What the radar is picking up is know as a roost ring. It’s a biological signal of a high concentration of either birds or bats simultaneously taking off and spreading out over an area. An explosion, especially one of the size mentioned in the video, would not create returns on radar like this. The reflectivity return is too high and the distribution is too symmetrical.

u/Junior_Rise_7451 16h ago

The explosion could have caused the mass move of the birds though right?

https://www.wsmv.com/video/2026/10/14/explosion-leads-large-structure-fire-gallatin/ coincidence that an explosion occurred at this same place at the same time?

u/lets-play-car-pranks 15h ago

Nothings gonna scare a shitload of birds like an explosion

19

u/Campcruzo 15h ago

At this time of year?  Localized entirely in your kitchen?

19

u/The-King-of-Cartoons 15h ago

Right, so yes the explosion happened there, but the radar is not picking up the actual shockwave, it’s picking up all of the birds/etc. in the area flying basically outwards away from the shockwave explosion

Bethpage and Cottontown look to be 17 miles apart by highway.

Are you saying this flock of birds are managing to occupy an area with a diameter of ~10 miles?

13

u/LostInRetransmission 15h ago edited 15h ago

They don't need to "fill" the whole volume. Each tiny bird/bat has its own small radar return and the whole flock adds up, thus make enough return to be visible. That's why you can see murmuration on radar e.g. https://wxguys.ssec.wisc.edu/2024/09/30/weather-radars-birds/ the "blob" as mentioned by the radar specialist is shown also and explained - see image on right side with subtitle "Scientists can distinguish rainy weather as seen to the west and north in graphic from flocks of birds because they appear as circles or blobs on radar screens."

edited: I am certain the ring is not the explosion from two days ago of a garage (as some state below). That radar return is 16 km wide (distance galatin/cottonwood). A garage explosion would not make that wide a radius. Bird flying in panic from a huge noise , on the other hand, would potentially make that visible.

Pardon, I don't doubt your explanation, but why is symmetrical distribution a clue it ISNT an explosion? Arent explosions rapidly expanding energy? Wouldn't the signal thus be spherical in nature and therefore symmetrical?

We've all seen videos of explosions where the flame energy clearly isn't symmetrical like munitions impacts or crashes, but wouldn't a static catalyst's force and detectable signatures be nearly perfectly symmetrical?

This question isn't about the post, but about the nature of explosions in general.

This is the second massive explosion in Gallatin, TN in the past two years. A house exploded in June 2025. I'm curious, how's the meth business in Gallatin?

Sometimes I kind of forget how big the country is. I’m looking at the map trying to figure out what state and drew a blank. Couldn’t find a reference point like a medium sized city I recognized.
