This guy wandered out of the bushes yesterday limping and with some open sores. After some coaxing and food bribes I was able to get him in my truck and delivered to the local humane society.

We’ve had our almost 9 year old chihuahua rat terrier since she was about 12 weeks old. Shes always been a happy healthy sweet girl. Over the years, she’s slowed down and started having bad skin episodes. Itching, smelling so bad regardless of medicated baths, hair falling out etc.

We’ve gone to countless vet visits, gotten her on apoquel, antibiotics etc. It started off about 1x per year and the vet said it was most likely environmental. We were on top of her flea meds and did an antibiotic. The infection came back worse, and started to occur about 3-4x per year. Vets would always put her on apoquel and antibiotics. It would work but came back all the time. I had asked if it could be her food. She was on hills science chicken food, chicken wet food, treats etc. Vet said it’s mostly never food allergies and just had her on the same routine of antibiotics and apoquel.

After so many expensive visits, special shampoos and medication, I didn’t know what else to do. I felt so helpless. She was always chewing her limbs, licking herself, scratching and always had wounds on her. At one point, her neck was red and raw and oozing, and smelled like a dead body. I finally decided to try to see if it was her food.

I switched her to just kibble. It was super hard to find something with no chicken. I found this great salmon option on Amazon. It’s been 3 weeks and our girl seems like she’s back to her old self. She’s playful again, her hair is growing back on her bald spots, and even on her chest which she hasn’t had in years, she seems more comfortable and she doesn’t smell bad anymore. I’m truly hoping this is the answer to our issues.

I’m now wondering if the vet just wanted to keep us coming back for medication. I will be continuing this as I know it takes up to 12 weeks for chicken to get out of dogs system. But overall I’m hopeful that we found an easy solution to our zombie girls problem.

TLDR: dog with years of skin issues was put on a chicken free diet and after 3 weeks it’s done more than years of medication.

• General Discussion • Went for a routine dental cleaning

My 8 yo golden retriever went for a teeth cleaning last week. They noticed a small mass on her lower gum that we never noticed and did an excision. Found out today that it was a really aggressive melanoma. The vet called today and said that she has 3-6 months to live. We have a goals of care visit planned for next week and I can’t believe it. She is totally normal right now, but I guess based on the histology it was a really aggressive cancer that they think has already metastasized. Heartbroken and can’t believe it

When she was a puppy, she used to climb onto my desk all the time, sometimes sneaking right under my hands and falling asleep as if she had stepped into a "creative triangle" while I was sketching and working on concepts.

Even now, she occasionally tries to do the same thing. But she’s not a puppy anymore and completely takes up all the space. When that happens, she completely puts my work on hold, of course, but I just take a break and pet her, remembering those exact moments from her puppyhood.

• Advice (Health) • Dogs Nail Trim Needed? Spoiler

Need some weighing in here (this is not my dog, technically my sister’s bf’s dog). My sister loves him so he stays with us most times but bf does his maintenance.

I’ve been asking for weeks, when is this dog getting his nails trimmed. My sister will dutifully bring it up to him and he swears the dog doesn’t need his nails cut. To the point where it’s causing a huge fight where he says he’s going to send a vet friend over to our place to confirm he doesn’t need his nails cut.

To me this is obvious, becoming actually neglectful, and he needs at least every outside nail and his dewclaws trimmed.

I took some photos, he has nails that are starting to curl under his paw pads and some are badly cracked.

What does the dog community say? Are we being crazy helicopter dog moms or does this dog need his nails cut?

About 13 days ago, I posted here because I had a little dog about to have puppies. We rescued her w/o knowledge of the pregnancy. My wife nor myself have ever had a pregnant dog. I was asking for advice.
This is an update: she had 6 puppies, one at home and 5 in the ER vets office. The first one came at 8:24. At 10:23 she hadn’t had another puppy so we took her in. 2 dose’s of oxytocin and we left at 2am with 6 healthy puppies one exhausted mama dog, and a much lighter bank account. Here’s the pic.

Our little dog, named Mon, suddenly died today.

My mom picked her from a shop on the street. She was very fluffy and playful, she liked to nibble my hand when I petted her. In the video, she had just come to our house for a few days so she get startled easily, and my dad really love to make some little noise to see her reaction. After 1 year, she changed into a beautiful lady with long black fur, and the white bow on her chest.

I live far from home, and only go home twice a year. I did not visit home for 2 years, once. But she always remembers and greets me with the same joy, no matter how long I had gone. And from now on, I can never see her running to greet me ever again.

Bye, Mon.

P/s: she is the 2nd dog of my family that died within one year.

• Advice (Health) • help for an unusual cough and occasional white phlegm Spoiler

My dog always snores when she sleeps, but she had never coughed until now—in fact, she hardly ever barks. This started today. My wife has been giving her Greek yogurt for about two days; could that be the cause? Or perhaps she ate something she shouldn't have while outside? Or could it be kennel cough? I gave her some water mixed with honey and lemon, plus an extra spoonful of honey, and it seemed to help. She’s currently sleeping and snoring; I’ve been keeping an eye on her for two hours, during which she coughed twice. In total, it’s happened four times today: twice before I got home, and twice just now, in the early hours of the morning. Greetings dogs loving friends

We’re going to the doctor tomorrow regardless; I just want to hear about other people’s experiences.

Just a friendly reminder that if you have a dog who is known to run off, please get a fence. We lost our girl Daisy five years ago due to a coyote attack because our fence (which we had gotten specifically because she had a habit to run off) had a hole in it that we put off fixing. If you're wondering if getting a fence is the right idea, or if it's too expensive trust me, it's worth it. She was about a month away from her 10th birthday and probably would still be with us today, don't let this happen to you too.
