3 picture - new cut!
4 picture - before a hair cut
5 picture - day after a haircut (not styled just air dry)
(no I don’t dye my hair)

So at the ripe age of 25 my hair started to suddenly get curly. I decided to cut it and give this new life a go. So here’s my new shag haircut. I definitely need to learn to scrunch better and commit to a defuser but damn what a progress already! Can’t wait to rock my new waves that I hope soon will get even curlier!

My hair routine:
I use argan magic shampoo and karma smoothing conditioner mask. After showering I scrunch my hair as it is dripping wet and I apply John Frieda Frizz Ease dream curls styling foam and Nutricurls milky waves. I let it air dry after.

Before & After 4 months after my first post, and my hair is free of the triangle!

I posted 4 months ago about how my hair kept turning into a triangle whenever I dried it. Since then, I’ve gotten it cut by someone who knows how to work with my hair type (this honestly made the biggest improvement!) experimented with products, and have a permanently sore neck from diffusing upside down.

Updated wash routine:
L’OrĆ©al Everpure Moisture Shampoo 1-2x/week
Ouai detox clarifying shampoo ~1x/week
Oribe Curl Conditioner 1-2x/week
Wella color mask depositing conditioner 1x/month

Updated styling routine:
1- Ouai Leave-in Conditioner (spray and brush through)
2-divide and clip my hair into sections
3- R&Co Ringtone Defining Gel + Oribe Curl Mousse (work it in section by section, not all at once)
4- use a bounce curl brush on small sections
5- finger coil a few pieces near my face (I’ve had straightened bangs for 20+ years, it’s gonna take a bit for them to recover)
5- Diffuse (I start hover diffusing, diffuse leaning forward, then hang my head off the back of a chair and hold the hair dryer for what feels like an eternity
6- Ouai Hair Oil for any residual frizz

Help! Native hair care ruined my hair

Post image
161 Upvotes

The routine at the time of this picture:

Native curl care shampoo and conditioner (coconut and turmeric). Kinky Curly Knot Today leave in (just a little bit), air dried and combed through at the end of the day. Hair was never like this before.

I started using Native shampoo and conditioner (coconut and turmeric) which specified it was for curly hair. I was using it for about a month and noticed my fine, low porosity, 3b hair was extremely dry and bristly. I didn’t think it was the shampoo and conditioner because it seemed so innocent, it being specifically for curly hair and ā€œclean.ā€ But it’s the only thing I changed.

It’s been about a month since I stopped using it. I’ve also switched to a silk pillow case, don’t use hair ties anymore, and deep condition with Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Mask every time I shampoo. I switched to Maui Moisture shampoo and conditioner. I have a haircut appointment to get it cut to a chin length bob because I am not seeing any improvement. I’m really bummed about this. I just wanted to warn others that were looking for drugstore shampoo and conditioners.

Before & After Happy with the shorter haircut

Post image
229 Upvotes

After growing my hair out I settled with the longer hairstyle but it never looked quite right to me. I finally bit the bullet and got a shorter haircut and my curls are more defined now and the hair is much more manageable.

Routine:

- Shampoo and condition with the 'Lola Cosmetics Meu Cacho' line

- Apply a bit Skala Blue curl cream after rinsing the conditioner out

- Pat dry with a t-shirt then style with a bit more cream

Help! Feeling really unconfident and lost

Hello all, I could use some help with my curly hair. I honestly don’t even know where to start/what kind of help I need. My hair is pretty fine and prone to frizzing, and to top it off I have a vicious cowlick. I have a hard time with more ā€œfeminineā€ things and feel really unconfident in this area. My hair makes me feel very self-conscious. Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

My current routine is to use Olaplex shampoo and conditioner (bond maintenance no. 4 and no. 5) 2-3x per week. I put it in a microfiber turban right out of the shower and then finish by air drying. For styling it down, I fully wet and comb my hair with a wide tooth comb, then I squirt a dime-sized amount of Miss Jessie’s Multicultural Curls and work it through my wet hair with my fingers. Otherwise, I have it up in a bun. I do sleep on a silk pillowcase and refresh with a spray bottle of water.

Hair Victory! Two-Year Anniversary Gift For Going Grey

Post image
39 Upvotes

I stopped coloring my hair two years ago and it was the best decision for my curls. My hair is now thicker and healthier. I thought I would look old but I get a lot of compliments on my grey curls. I decided to celebrate with a refurbished Dyson Supersonic. I bought it off the Dyson site for $199. My hair dries in less than half the time with my old Conair. The curls are so defined with hardly any frizz. I didn't change my routine, only the diffuser.

Routine:

Wash Day: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Shampoo & Conditioner

Other Days: Bondi Curl Boost Conditioner

Styling: DevaCurl Ultra Gel and Curls Edge Control

Bonnet for sleeping

Help! Any tips on how to not lose volume??

Post image
• Upvotes

The pictures above show my hair without any product at all. Now, while I love this look id love to use product once in a while especially since my curls don't hold up after wash day. My only problem is that it turns my hair slick and stringy and or also makes me lose all volume. I think the slick problem I can solve by "scrunching out the crunch" but I don't know how to solve the volume problem. Should I use less product? I usually avoid diffusing since it causes me heat damage (I had a LOT of dead ends and I've kind of been a bit of a worrywart about heat) but I'd be open to it. Target the ends of my hair? Any tips are helpful!

Routine:

Garnier Fructis

Iomi conditioner fairytale

No product

Air dried

Regular cotton pillowcases, no bonnet.

Before & After New curly hairdresser butchered and thinned my hair

Long time lurker - first time poster.
First two pictures are before and the rest of the pics are after the haircut.

I’m from Melbourne Australia and tried a very popular curly hairdresser this week - I asked for more volume emphasising keeping the length as much as possible. Didn’t think I had to spell out I wanted to keep the density too as my hair is fine.

Anyway what I received without consultation was a shit tonne more layers, a lot of thinning and density lost and absolutely no extra volume. I have so many gaps inbetween my stands and My pony tail is sooo thin when previously it was so thick it would give me tension headaches. I am also suffering from my hair snagging snapping and knotting everywhere including at my scalp that I didn’t have before. I have fine high density hair so losing density really makes my hair look soo thin. Oh and btw second day rn and my curls have completely dropped - I’m just a shaggy frizzy mess. This is also not my first curly haircut so I know you don’t need to chop like a maniac to achieve volume as it has been done previously (by someone else).

I know it’s just hair and that it will grow but because the condition of it has been damaged by one haircut, I’m worried my hair will break at the same rate as its growth and therefore will never be able to regrow thickness or health.

I am so devastated. I have lost soo much confidence in a matter of few days. I have cried a few times since and can’t shake off the sadness.

Does anyone have any tips? :-(

Routine:
Wash: Innersense pure harmony bath shampoo and conditioner
Umberto ginnani mousse
Not your mothers gel
Diffuse with Dyson nural

The curling style products above change intuitively each wash

Update: since I left the salon a bad review with photos as evidence and sent an inquiry to get a refund, the owner has called me and asked me to come in to review the haircut and maybe do treatments etc… I said ok as they are trying but I’m still pretty nervous with letting them treat me again tbf

Discussion Torn between Dyson Nural, Dyson r, or sticking with what I have

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

So all of my research indicates that the Dyson Nural is a better choice for curly hair and sensitive scalps. HOWEVER, the reason I am looking for a new hair dryer in the first place is because I am chronically ill and my current hair dryer, which works fine tbh, is heavy and makes my arms hurt pretty quick. Hence why I’m interested in the r.

If I’m going to buy another hair dryer that’s not any lighter (Dyson Nural), I might as well just stick with my current hair dryer right?

My current hair dryer is the Curlsmith Defrizzion Dryer - Travel Edition. It works perfectly well for me, other than the weight.

I guess I’m just looking for opinions; switch or not? If I switch, which Dyson should I go for?

I’m adding some hair pics in case that makes a difference for dryer choice? Idk lol

Routine for the attached images:
- Apply OGX Coconut Miracle Oil on dry hair and let sit for 15-20 mins
- Clarifying shampoo: Olaplex No.4C Bond Maintenance Clarifying Shampoo (I clarify ~once a month)
- Regular Shampoo: NYM Curl Talk Bond Building Shampoo
- Conditioner: NYM Curl Talk Bond Building Conditioner
- Heat protectant/Leave-In: Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat Protectant Leave In Conditioner Primer
- Mousse/Gel: AG Mousse Gel Extra-Firm Curl Retention

I usually apply the heat protectant, section off my top/crown section, apply the mousse gel to the main section of my hair and just brush through with a Tangle Teezer brush and finger comb/scrunch

Then for top section I apply mousse gel and use the Bounce Curl brush on small diagonal-ish sections

Scrunch everything together, micro plop with a Microfiber towel, and diffuse with the aforementioned Curlsmith travel diffuser (except I’m lazy and my arms/neck hurt and I never dry it all the way and end up finishing with air drying 🤔)

Help! Favorite bonnet for wild sleepers?

I’m a wild sleeper and my bonnet ends up either half off my head or totally off every night. What’s your favorite bonnet that will stay in place no matter how much you toss and turn? TIA!

Routine: shampoo 1x week w/ Head and Shoulders (don’t @ me), condition 3x week w/ Native curl conditioner, set with Innersense gel on wet hair, plop in old t-shirt, air dry.

Help! Very frizzy and unaligned wavy hair right after styling, how to improve it?

Hi there, I've been using my natural hair for 2 years and i've been pretty happy with it. However, after coming back to my home country (Brazil, hot and dry weather) I've been struggling with it. It is very frizzy and unaligned. It is soft, well defined and also very shiny, but it doesn't looks "put together" and looks messy. It usually looks like what's in the video.

My hair routine is basically using TresemmƩ Lamelar Shine shampoo and mask (sometimes I use the conditioner), leave hair soaked wet and apply L'Oreal Paris Elvive Dream Curls leave in with a few drops of Glycolic Gloss serum, then i use Apice Nutriwaves Acidifyier Jelly for styling. Sometimes I air dry it, or I use a diffuser. Withing a few hours of washing and styling, my hair puffs up this way.

I don't usually use satin/silk bonnets or pillowcases, but I'm looking forward to them.

I suspect it could be high porosity, but none of the acidifying products I've used worked. So maybe product build up? Either way, any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Help! How to tame the frizz?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey, I've tried the curly hair method today, but the frizz always comes back. Is there anything I can do to reduce the frizz and tame the flyaways?

Routine
1. Used the Pureology Hydrate Shampoo
2. Applied the Amika Hydro Rush Intense Moisture Mask, let it sit for 10 minutes and rinsed it off
3. Applied the Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner, after brushing and separating the curls - at this stage the curls were damp and defined
4. Applied the Schwarzkopf Taft Power Mousse and lightly scrunched - the curls were defined here
5. Left the hair down to air dry

I also have used the Eco Gel and Curl Bites Strong Hold Gel on other occasions but they did not help :(

ISO Curly bridal hair styles

Hey ladies,

I’m getting married in a few months and am having trouble finding a bridal hair style I like that would elevate my natural curls. So many styles I see offered by hair stylists are the same waves/ brushed out curls created by curling irons, and while I can find some naturally curly bridal looks on Instagram I’m worried that these aren’t realistic for a typical hair stylists or wouldn’t hold up well over an entire evening. If you’re willing to share photos of your curly bridal looks and how they held up, I’d really appreciate it!

Routine for the bot:
Shampoo with whatever I have, alternate with olaplex clarifying shampoo once or twice a week. Condition with shea moisture intensive hydration conditioner.
Style by raking the doux mousse and bio silk rock hard gelee into sections of hair, scrunch, and diffuse.

Help! Favorite mousse?

My hair stylist recently suggested the Davines mousse for my curls, as it gives hold without being crunchy. I cannot justify spending $37, does anyone have any suggestions?

Routine-

Shampoo- ouidad curls (green bottle)

Conditioner- L'Oreal bond repair conditioner

Cream-curl smith air dry cream

Gel- the doux bee girl gel

Generally I air dry my air after raking through produce but I just got a bounce curl brush and will be trying that along with diffusing more!

Help! Need help finding the right producty

Thumbnail

The routine I use is shea moisture strengthen and restore shampoo, and cake curl enhancing conditioner I use both at night and let it dry then put in a bonnet. I do this about three times a week because I tend to get lots of build up. Then in the mornings I use as I am bond leave in and right now that’s the best product I’ve used for my hair but idk I don’t like the smell that much tbh. But I have low density 2c-3a curls that are pretty fine and thin and get weighed down by almost any product. I heard that mousse could be good but I don’t know which one I would get that fits my hair. I don’t like the crunchy cast feeling you get after using products and I aim for volume and healthy curls most of the time. I also use a scalp oil a few times a week. I always air dry and that’s it.so any recommendations for a good leave in or mouse that fits my hair and yes scent matters

Help! Protein Treatment

I was wondering if anyone has experience with protein treatments. I've been feeling like my hair has been limp and flat so I thought I would give a protein treatment a try since clarifying my hair didn't seem to help. I got the Curlsmith Bond Curl Rehab Salve and applied it to my hair before washing it and let it sit for about 15 minutes like the instructions say. After washing and styling, I felt like my hair had a little more volume and structure to it, but still felt soft and boneless compared to what it normally is. I thought one protein treatment is usually enough to make your hair bounce back from the videos I've seen online. Is it possible that I need to use it a few more times? I wanted to ask here in case I accidentally damage my hair by using too much protein!

Routine:

Double shampoo with Herbal Essence Grapefruit Volume shampoo and condition with Loreal EverPure Restore conditioner, occasionally use Pantene Sheer Volume shampoo to clarify

Styling (depends on what I'm feeling): not your mother's mousse or Odele air dry styler and air dry

Before & After Wet to Dry! I rarely judge my wet hair, gotta wait till it dries 🧔

Thumbnail
gallery
220 Upvotes

I started using mainly the Wide tooth comb and mostly retired the Fine tooth. Seems I get more volume up top with wide

More in depth explanations on my first post

Products

Shampoo - A curl can dream

Conditioner - Paul Mitchell, purple

Leave-in Conditioner - Camille Rose

Routine

Shampoo thoroughly

Condition and let sit while wash body

Brush out the conditioner to detangle, starting from the end of hair, working way up to roots

Keep hair dripping wet, press towel to the ends of my hair for split second, to stop the dripping

Roughly style and part with wide tooth

Add leave-in. A pea size for day 1. Half a pea on day 2 for co-wash days. Natural oils will be helping at that point so don't need as much

Scrunch scrunch scrunch the leave-in. Lightly finger coil/rake. So while raking my fingers through, I loosely spin them too for undefined coils

Microfiber scrunch my ends. Push up against my roots to create a wave. Scrunching the roots creates frizz, so I opt for pushing

Prefer air dry after micro scrunch. Then shake it out after it's completely dry 🧔

Help! Products to have that slick back natural flow??? (1st pic)

Thumbnail

So for context, the first three pictures are pictures of my hair, and the last picture is ideally what I would like to start making my hair look like, and how I would like to start slicking it back. But whenever I slick my hair back, I think I'm not using the right products. My hair is super, super thick, which is the problem. Does anybody have any recommendations for the right products that you're using to slick it back and have that slick-back wavy look? Could it be the length of my hair?

My routine
1.head and shoulders is my shampoo I don’t use any conditioner
2. I also have used this gel from shea moisture for slick back when my hair is damp I apply it as seen in my one slick back picture but it’s not that flow it just makes it hard
3. I let my hair air dry after drying it with a towel to get damp
4.I don’t use any bonnets or anything special other then the shea cream and the gel made from shea moisture

Help! 36 and still can’t work my hair!

Thumbnail

Hello! I have coarse, wiry hair that looks simultaneously frizzy and flat. It feels like fibreglass. It doesn’t grow beyond the pictured length anymore although I would love to have it longer.

Went to a trichologist who stated I have virtually no oil coming from my scalp (was on accutane historically but nothing the last year) and suggested a £500/month treatment which I cannot afford!

Current routine: I just use the redken acidic curls bonding shampoo, conditioner and leave in but after working for a couple weeks it’s not doing much anymore. I air dry. That’s about it.
Historically used Innersense hydrating line with average results.

Have tried it all at this point - completely removed heat for the last year (previously diffused it and it looked good for 2 days before turning into frizz+ seemed to mess it up longterm), every conditioner under the sun, Innersense (as above), kerastase, Amika, silicone mix, drugstore stuff, Lush, literally THE LOT.
Olaplex makes it worse.

Gel makes my hair look dull even when I scrunch out the cast, leave ins don’t work…

Tried oil, then removing all oil.

Got one of those special shower heads to soften water

My hair is so coarse and wiry I don’t see the point in wearing a silk cap but for a while I tried that too!

Bloods normal. I have a good diet. A high stress life but that is unlikely to change longterm (doctor, currently pregnant!).

I am considering cutting it all off.

Also people keep commenting they ā€œlove my hairā€ but it is so frustrating because I don’t understand why. I hate wearing it down and for special events I literally don’t know what to do.

Any advice welcome šŸ™

Help! How to handle this messiness?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been treating my hair as straight all my life. Since it’s always tangly and puffy I took my chances at a wavy hair routine. That was 6 days ago and this is what it turned out like today. It’s chaotic. Some days some strands on my right side are gorgeous and understand the assignment very well (not in this photo though). My hair on the left side gets a bit wavy but still tangly and in the back it’s still kinda straight. I feel like most products weigh my hair down too much because it is so fine. I actually get the best waves when it rains and I do nothing with it. The lengths are also damaged from bleaching and dyeing it back brown after a year of bleach.

This is the routine I did today:

- cantu sulfate-free clarifying shampoo on my roots

- pantene keratine protect mask for about 5 minutes, rinse out

- Schwarzkopf gliss kur ultimate repair conditioner, I comb it through while this is in there and then rinse it out carefully

- kept it dripping wet and carefully put curling cream in there using prayer hands (bought it in a Dutch drug store but the cream is discontinued)

- put in L’oreal dream long waves mousse same way as the curling cream

- scrunched with a soft towel (not microfiber because I don’t own one)

- vertically scrunched in gel from Syoss that I mixed with some water on my hands (it’s a bad gel for nonstraight hair imo so looking into another one)

- scrunched again with the towel

- blow dried the roots (without a diffuser because again I don’t own one) on the coldest setting and shortly dried the lengths a bit while trying to use my fingers as a diffuser a bit, so it was like 60% wet still

- let it air dry without touching it

- when it was dry I sprayed some sea salt spray on it, way too much I think, making it sticky and wet looking, but it helped a bit (brand is Kruidvat, a Dutch drug store)

What I struggle with is that I cannot keep my hair in big clumps while wet. Only the ones in the front right do this and those are often the prettiest ones.

I’m also considering having a haircut so that there are some layers in there and maybe som curtain bangs or like a butterfly cut.

I’m on a budget so I’m looking for ways to improve things that aren’t too pricy. But all suggestions are appreciated.

Help! How do I fix this

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I’ve had trouble with my hair since the dawn of time. Recently my hair feels like it’s completely lost volume (I’ve included pictures of what it used to look like). This is two days after washing.
My current routine is not much: brush before shower, shampoo (head and shoulders), conditioner (andrelon), scrunch in Umberto Gianni moisture milk (the only product I’ve found that works and doesn’t leave me feeling gross), use the diffuser before letting it airdry fully.
I don’t do any sleeping protection, so I probably should start doing that.
As you can see I dye my hair, for which I bleach it first. It grows very fast, and I’m currently trying to grow it past my shoulders, but there’s always the possibility I’ll get impatient or annoyed and cut it all off once more.
My biggest problem with finding the right products is that I can’t stand when my hair feels ā€œhardā€ or too oily.
Oh and the stands on the side of my head are usually braided :D
I hope this is the right place to ask because I have no clue how to handle this/what’s going on
