Mod Post Simple Questions Megathread

Remember, the #1 thing you can do to improve is to review your own replays and post them for others to critique!

This thread is for anyone who has a question that they feel might be too "simple" to warrant its own thread and would be more comfortable posting their question in a format like this. Note that this is not a containment thread -- individual question threads are still allowed and encouraged, this is just trying to get people out of their shell a bit and interact with the community. All types of smash questions are welcome, from mindset to terminology definitions to controller setups to frame data to whatever you want to ask!

Please help out others where you can! And remember to stay respectful!

Mod Post Watching and sharing replays (aka VODs) is the best way to improve! Here's how to upload replays

You can save replays (also known as "VODs", "Videos On Demand") in the victory screen after any match. The game will show you which button to press to save it (Y on the GC controller). Then you'll need a micro sd card in your Switch in order to save the replay as a video. Once it's saved, you can connect the sd card to your PC and transfer, or upload directly from the Switch. 16-32gb micro sd cards only cost a few dollars, but if you can't buy one then you'll have to record the video with your phone.

How to save the replay as a video and transfer it to PC: https://www.wikihow.com/Transfer-Replays-from-Super-Smash-Bros.-Ultimate-to-PC

If you want to upload directly from your Switch and use the Nintendo Switch app on your smartphone: https://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/353519

As of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 3.0.0 update, replay videos can be uploaded directly to YouTube via the Miiverse / Smash World sharing service and collected on the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app.

This technique still requires an SD Card in your Switch to save videos. It does eliminate though the steps of removing the SD Card from your Switch, plugging it into your computer, manually posting to YouTube, etc.

You will need to be signed in to the various Nintendo online accounts.

  1. Save a replay after a match.
  2. Go to Vault > Replays > Replay Data. Select a replay and Convert to Video to save the replay as a video onto your SD Card.
  3. Go to Vault > Replays > Video and select the just-created video. Select Post to share this replay to Miiverse / Smash World. Nintendo uses YouTube as the backing store for videos, so it will now take a few minutes to upload the video from your Switch directly to YouTube.
  4. Open the Nintendo Switch Online mobile app on your phone. Select Smash Ultimate > Profile > Posts. Once they have fully uploaded, your replay videos will appear here.
  5. Select a replay video. Click the Share arrow icon. Copy the link.
  6. Open this link in a web browser. The video will have been added as an unlisted video on the official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate YouTube account.

Characters (Playing Against) How to deal with super fast characters? (Joker/aegis)

I have a friend that mains joker and aegis and it’s so infuriating every match. I tend to play fox or wario and no matter what I do it feels like he is always wherever he needs to be to punish me. If I play slow and patient, he shoots me or grabs me. If I try to play aggressive they are fast enough to just be out of reach but can still hit me for it. Both (or all three) characters can outrange me so every time I try to punish him I get hit before I can get in. It’s especially frustrating cause even in advantage, when I’m in the middle of a combo, they are fast enough to hit me out of it and put me back in disadvantage. It constantly feels like I’m backed into a wall and he gets to just do whatever he wants, and be everywhere. It’s to the point where I don’t enjoy playing against him anymore, but he never gives any actual advice about the matchup

Edit:
I don’t have many good recent videos of our games but here are 2 I found. Also please note this was my second time ever touching marth and was very much just trying to get a feel for him. I don’t often just stand still and throw out moves like I do in the video, but I feel like it does capture the feeling that if I don’t have a wall up he’ll just run in and steam roll me

General Question How to improve the feeling of movement in Ultimate?

I started playing competitively in Smash 4. For all its faults, movement in that game felt *crisp* (perfect pivots, dash-dancing, being able to use c-stick diagonally for nair to maintain aerial movement, and an almost one-to-one reflection between inputs and what happens on screen), and I definitely took it for granted until the switch to Ultimate.

I never got used to the buffer system in Ult, and took a long hiatus while I went back to school, but now I'm trying to get back into it again. There's a couple local weeklies I'm attending on a regular basis, but it seems like, multiple times at every event, there's moments where I just stare at my character and think "that's not what I told you to do", or "Why didn't you do what I told you to do?"

So I'm looking for resources to help me get past this hurdle. Lots of people seem to love the movement options in Ult, so I'm fairly certain this is an "old man yells at cloud" moment and I just have to figure out a way to adapt my hands and brain to the new age. Any advice?

General Question How to convince my dad to take me to a tournament.

I am a teenage player from CA. I want to go to a tournament this sunday in Fresno this sunday (Grand Theft Auto: Fresno 14)I have pretty good results and idk if I can use them to explain to my dad why I should go. He's not fond of taking me to tournaments in general, but he still takes me anyways because he's great. But it feels as if since he doesn't really like taking me to locals in the first place, it'll be a monumental task for me to get him to take me. Does anyone have advice on how I could get to go besides the usual "tell him you'll do all your homework and maintain good grades" type response? Thank you.

Match Critique Match critique

Im playing as Luigi and my friend’s playing Cloud. Could we get some advice on what we’re doing good and bad. I know I dropped my combos this game and maybe my defensive options weren’t the best ? I think cloud was jumping onto stage too much.
What are some things that jump out from the match that we could improve on, defensive options, spacing, stage control, punish options, decision making etc ?

General Question Offline struggles after wifi

Went to any in person event the other day. Made finals at my last one, but havent been in quite a while. I like challenging myself to be good at Smash, but it unfortunately isn't a big part of my life. Anyway, I found at this one I was getting a particularly high amount of misinputs. I play a lot of wifi cause I mostly only have time to practice on my breaks at work. I know this messes with your timings when you play offline, but what is curious to me is how. One would assume the extra delay would make online feel comparatively unresponsive, yet it actually feels like offline is the more unresponsive experience a lot of the time. I have to delay my throw combos a little bit, which is fine after like 10 mins of practice. The biggest thing that kills me tho, is it feels like im constantly getting dead inputs when I try to fast fall or dash. Am I just used to doing things too fast because of all the lag?

General Question Should I switch my main?

Right now im maining mainly 2 characters ( king k, Isabel) which are considered low tier to most… im thinking of switching to hard maining snake, mario or donkey kong… me playing king k or isabel id think im pretty decent at the game! But when coming across someone who knows how to play or even counter zoning or king k’s crown mechanics it seems as if they’re un playable … if im trying to get better at this game which characters would be best for comp play and doesnt have many cons? Does characters tiers really matter?

General Question Trying to seriously get into smash…

At this point, I’m actually not too sure on what the best mode to practice on… every time I play online it’s very laggy and inconsistent!! I lose every game even though I know I’m definitely capable. Is it better to just practice offline and sharpen up my skills or still play laggy online?

General Question Cant "lock in"?

I play ssbu competitively for my school esports, so I want to improve, especially mid match. Whenever I play, either against friends, randoms online, or preferably in school matches, I can never seem to actually play as good as I feel like I can. It always feels like I can play better in the moment, not with more practice, but right when Im playing. I could be explaining this poorly, or it could be another issue (not being as good, just slow reaction time/movements), but it feels like I should be able to play better than I do mid match. I always feel slower than the previous match I played, even if its the opposite, or just feels like I play worse after every match. I cant seem to get into the "zone" of playing. Maybe I have been watching too much DBZ shorts, but it feels like I could be doing a significantly amount better than I do most of the time. I hope someone can help if this is an actual issue.

Do you guys look at your opponent or your own character when you play? Most people I know said they look at their opponent but I'm still curious.

Info/Resource PSA for dealing with zoners

This is going to be extremely eye rolling for 90% of people reading this, but I was today years old when I realized you can threaten with full hop aerials through platforms. You just have to time the fast fall right as your feet are about to hit the platform, and have your aerials hitbox come out before frame 10ish. I know this is incredibly rudimentary info, but my Wolf is at 16.4 mil gsp, I have top 8'd multiple locals, and I did not know it worked like this until today. Nobody told me either, just stumbled on it during the game below. There's layers to this shit players. Just wanted to spread the word if anyone else was somehow in the dark on this.

General Question Best ways to practice beyond grinding in training room?

TL;DR: I am looking for ways to improve my gameplay outside of just grinding combos and movement tech in training room. I have been getting conflicting answers on google. Able to go 2-2 pretty consistently, but keep getting outplayed by players whose skill level and technique out class my own.

I have been playing Ultimate competitively for the past 4 years and have been able to go from 0-2'er to going 2-2 pretty often. I started going to more locals recently so I can play more and realized that although I've been able to get pretty good thus far, that there is a whole other echelon of player whose level I haven't reached yet. I talk to them and it seems that I have all the right knowledge and game sense, but there is something that I guess I'm not getting / understanding.

I did some research on google on other ways to expand practicing and getting better at the game, but I keep getting conflicting answers. I know each character has their own unique nuances, but beyond that, I want to be able to practice the game to get a better understanding of my main (Mac) and the game as a whole. I have a modded switch and know that the training mod can help, but if anyone has any ways that have clearly helped them get better at playing and understanding the game, I would really appreciate the advice. Thanks!

Characters (Playing as) My gameplay feels too robotic (ZSS)

I can sum up my entire gameplan like this: Zair my opponent. Start jumping? Spam fair to anti air until grounded and shielding. If Shielding f tilt and jab them to punish them. Conditioned to hold shield longer? Either grab or get better position for when they let go or punish oos option or try and cross up shield and tilt or tilt or jab in sync to when they let go. If I hit shield and they parry? Delay it. Need kill? Predict ledge option and either down smash or bair. Not hitting because shield? Accept needing a million grabs to kill.

I have no idea where to go from here, and need advice on how to play more actively.

Characters (Playing as) Secondary Reccomendations?

I've been playing on and off for about 5 years, but I've never used a secondary, just bounced around mains. I'm set atm on maining Aegis and have been practicing them hard for the past 2-ish months. Should I pick up a secondary? If so, when should I? And who should it be? I'm considering Joker or Cloud, but I'm open to any suggestions.

General Question How to fix this bad habit?

I’m a Kirby main who wants to be better at smash. It’s going to be a hard endeavor since Kirby is infamously known as one of the worst competitive smash characters.

What I want to talk about today is a bad habit I have that I’ve noticed way too often. Shielding for too long and too much. Against someone is isn’t a pro, it works fine, but people who are experienced will attack with an aerial or jab, and then grab me since I hold shield out for too long.

Against characters who have good command grabs like incineroar, Ridley and bowser destroy me in disadvantage since I always shield too much.

Also against characters with tether grabs, like Luigi and samus have an easy time against my shield.

How do I fix this bad habit?

General Question horrible wifi

IDK if its the console, game or controllers but the connection between the inputs and the outputs are acctually some of the worst in terms of delay and overall consistency of any game i have ever played , it feels like someone covered my controller in honey then fucked me. how is it that a game so horribly ping based can be so damn popular, im getting about 400 mbps on my compuiter but the switch is just slow as shit, disconnecting mid match leading to bans, and overall just shitty wifi to the point where its unplayable fuck this game

General Question Bad habit?

Ever since I can remember, I've always used shield + attack to grab instead of just using a grab button. I'm asking, is this unoptimal? I've gotten so used to it it'll be hard to change my muscle memory, should I just push through and try to change this habit? Or is it no big deal?
