I've been a huge fan of stand up comedy my entire life, I've met some of my favorites and been to a ton of shows but there really wasn't anyone quite like Greg Giraldo. Most know him for his roasts if at all, but his ability to be a brilliant comedian who balanced topical, smart, and often dark material while still making it unfathomably funny is something only found in the greats. I often find that "smart" comedians, aren't that funny. I often find that "edgy" comedians are only capable of crafting jokes about the same bunch of often powerless demographics. It is so immensely devastating to the artform of stand up comedy that someone who had everything it took to be an all time great comedian was lost so early.
There are plenty of comedians who I think of, and I would love to hear their views on the world today. George Carlin is so timeless, that bits of his still go viral for their relevance regularly. There are comics like Patrice O' Neal, that were captivating and opinionated that would've thrived in an internet environment where they didn't have to play the corporate game. Then there's Greg Giraldo, a Harvard lawyer who didn't always go with material where other comedians would. Of all comics, he is the one I genuinely wish we could've gotten more of. The type of comic who in one moment could contrast the written letters of soldiers over a century apart, and in another tell Flavor Flav he looked like King Lear after a three year crack binge on the Sun.
If you have not heard of his work, please seek it out. You owe it to yourself.

Jimmy Kimmel has defied the White House, stared down the FCC and stood up for the First Amendment. Now there is joy in Melonville, for he has done what not even Martin Scorsese could do — a documentary about SCTV.
Kimmel is the executive producer of “SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of,” a 90-minute feature premiering Oct. 30 on Netflix.
The 58-year-old comedian and talk show host discovered the series late at night growing up in Las Vegas. “I just couldn’t get enough of them,” he said.
This docu-salute to SCTV was supposed to happen eight years ago. The scrappy Canadian sketch series, shot in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, had a glorious cast reunion in 2018. Then, nothing. Scorsese’s documentary never materialized.
Netflix, home of the original documentary, acquired rights to the entire “SCTV” series.
Kimmel called up Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos and told him that “if you need somebody to finish it for you, I’d love to do it.”
