Advice Wanted i took too my lib ed’s for a semi hard major

i’m fighting regret but i’m in my first semester of sophomore year getting my schedule for next semester and i fucked up by taking a ton of lib eds my first year.

when i was a freshman, i tried not to take too many hard classes bc in my mind, i wasn’t ready. i viewed courses as a reasonable step up but i didn’t want to rush. instead, i took 1 stem course with lib ed’s and would get up to 17-18 credits. this semester im taking 20 but only with one stem course still. i would have taken math but i took math in the summer and by the time it transferred, i was already registered. anyways, now the courses i have left to take are all stem heavy/directly for my major. it’s to the point where id be taking 3 to almost 4 hard courses a semester from 12-16 credits and with no easy lib eds. is this just something i have to accept that ive done to myself?

little background, im a human physiology major and unfortunately, had no one, not even my advisor, to tell me to space out the lib eds.

is this just something i have to accept that ive done to myself?

No advice wanted (Vent) Does any of this shit matter?

With the state of the economy, it feels like no matter your major, the most likely outcome is the same: getting thrown down to where you began, back to the working class. Whether by burnout, layoffs, or just not finding a job, I'm worried five years after I graduate I'll be stacking boxes or mopping floors or carrying a rifle. It's looking bleak.

Advice Wanted Omfg I fumbled so fucking hard

Sorry, I just really need to Vent rn.

So, I’ve been really into this girl I like named Vee, because she’s just so cute and pretty and charming. And today, infact literally minutes ago, I decided that I was gonna speak to her by apologising to her, since I had made some self-depreciating jokes which I’m not fully sure she got and I just wanted to apologise for looking like an idiot.

So, I walked up to her after the lesson ended, she was waiting for her friend because he forgot his coat and I walked up to her and I was like “Hey, I just wanted to say I’m sorry”, but at that moment I realised how stupid I sounded and I stumbled over my words and I never even explained what I was apologising for, making me sound even stupider. And then, I got cold feet and ran away.

This is just so fucking frustrating, I have so many fantasies about things I wanna do with her; I’ve literally been planning a trip to a caravan park with her and her friends but I’m not even on Stage 1 on the whole relationship, at this point I’m probably on fucking Stage -4. Like, why can’t I just talk to people, it’s so fucking annoying, like literally the other day I asked a group of kids for a charger and I almost throw up from how nervous I was. Like FUCJHCCHEISJ. It’s crazy, I just love her so much, I love her so much that she’s even starting to piss me off.

So, here’s what I’m gonna do next Monday (after half-term break), I got a Deadpool figurine and I’m gonna give that to her as an apology for how stupid I was. I think she likes Marvel, she has an Avengers backpack, Thor Hammer Keychain and whatevs, but then again, I have a Chicago Bulls Hoodie and I live in the UK.

Just help me please, and before anyone says; I am taking therapy and it’s not working.

Discussion I can’t compete with ai

Genuinely it’s so hard I think it’s more and more difficult for older professors to figure it out but it’s so painfully obvious. I just got 4th place in a competition where all the top 3 presenters had clearly AI concept pictures and vision statements and I’m so salty abt it. My team spent over 10 hours designing and photoshopping to create a concept just to lose to a teams whose was not realistic and clearly computer generated. I mean they stuck an amphitheater in a 35 foot wide space like what the fuck and then they won the award money w that. I’m vehemently against letting my skills and creativity erode by resorting to AI but genuinely I don’t know how I can go on in college and my career if everyone else is doing it like there’s no competition. Design and everything could possibly be better w humans but not at the pace ai can just fuck it all broooo

Advice Wanted Is it normal for a professor to send 80+ Canvas notifications in one day? Am I overreacting?

I’m an online college student, and I’m getting close to graduating. I work full-time, so I do all of my classes online through Canvas. For anyone who isn’t familiar with it, Canvas is the platform my college uses for assignments, discussions, grades, and communication between students and instructors.
I’ve been attending college for quite a while now, and I’m used to instructors sending announcements at the beginning of a semester, reminding us about upcoming assignments, or reaching out if we’re missing something. I’ve never really had an issue with it before.
However, I recently started an introductory psychology class, and this professor’s communication style is honestly driving me crazy.
From the beginning, he has been posting announcements about how he will know if we use AI, that he will catch us, and that he will punish us to the fullest extent possible. The announcements themselves aren’t even particularly informative. Most are one sentence long, and sometimes he sends multiple separate announcements within five minutes that could easily have been combined into one message.
I also learned pretty quickly that he takes his title VERY seriously. I referred to him as Professor [Last Name] in a discussion board, and he responded rather rudely that we need to address him as Doctor [Last Name]. Okay, fair enough, I can use the title he prefers, but the way he handled it definitely set the tone for the class.
The notifications are what’s really getting to me, though. Canvas notifications come directly to my phone, and this man sends SO MANY of them. One day, I was working my nine-hour shift and had my phone on Do Not Disturb the entire time. When I checked afterward, I had 83 Canvas notifications.
EIGHTY-THREE.
At first, the announcements were mostly warnings about AI. Now, it’s multiple messages throughout the day saying things like, “This is due tomorrow,” followed a few minutes later by “This is due today,” then another message reminding us that the assignment is due today. It’s just notification after notification, sometimes for things that could have been included in one announcement.
I understand that professors need to communicate deadlines and make sure students know what’s expected of them. I’m not asking him to stop communicating altogether. But there’s a difference between keeping students informed and flooding their phones with dozens of separate notifications.
The biggest issue is that I’m starting to ignore the notifications altogether because there are just too many. Now I’m genuinely worried that if he sends something actually important, I’m going to miss it because I’ve gotten so used to seeing his name pop up constantly.
I know I can adjust my Canvas notification settings, and I know students can rate professors at the end of a course. I’m just curious whether anyone else has experienced something like this. Is this normal for an online class? Am I overreacting, or would this bother you, too?
I’m trying to get through this prerequisite so I can finish my degree, and I really don’t want to create unnecessary problems with my instructor. I just want to be able to work my full-time job and complete my coursework without feeling like my phone is being held hostage by Canvas.

Advice Wanted Should I drop this class?

My professor is impossible . We have to memorize 6 chapters by Wednesday and we are STILL learning new material. HW was barely given, and she has a terrible rating on ratemyprofessors. I didn’t do great on the first exam and I prob won’t do well on the next. The drop date is Friday so I’m still thinking about it.

Advice Wanted Bombed a midterm and my grade dropped so significantly and I'm not sure how to not feel doomed.

I usually do good on the homework in chemistry but I always suck on the exams. I don't think I've ever gotten this screwed over before. 34% grade. Sick as a dog when I took it. I swear on my life I studied every waking moment. I took lots of breaks but I basically had to study for two separate classes. I didn't cram, I did it over the course of several days. Dropped my score to a 43%. I feel so screwed.

And no, I'm not going to drag myself to a tutor. I don't have time and the stress of going to someone else would kill me. I don't want to, okay. I wouldn't know where to start and would have the same issues.

I don't want to retake this class, though. I don't want to have to go through these incredibly shitty labs with the lab prof. I've never been good at chem. FML. Am I screwed?

No advice wanted (Vent) First Emotional Breakdown of the School Year

I decided to take a creative writing class because I thought it would be fun. On a side note, I write creatively in my free time and I’m working on my first novel so I’m always learning and I thought this would be a class that would both be fun and insightful but I was so wrong. Because the class is so limiting and constraining. For someone who’s never written creatively before maybe it would be fun but I feel so frustrated and my creativity stifled by the structure of the course. We have to write a short story by the end of quarter and my instructor said we could write whatever we wanted but I get the feeling that’s not true. She tells me my idea is a novel idea even though it’s definitely not. Like, if I thought it was a novel idea I would’ve saved the idea for a future novel. Not for some short story in a creative writing class. Apparently my plot outline wasn’t detailed enough which I don’t know how much more detail she wanted. I feel a little like she already wants us to have written the short story at this point. And she said I had a lot of character work for a short story even though she previously said it was okay because there were things about our characters that we would know but might not show up on the page.

I guess I feel frustrated because I’m not used to making outlines for my stories. I find them to stifle any creativity and make me lose interest in writing the idea into reality. I get why I have to make the outline because it’s an assignment for class but I still find it mundane. I just like sitting down and letting everything come to me.

After I received the feedback, I got so upset(mostly because she gave me a b+ for what I felt like was thorough work). Between already being anxious for the test results for the statistics test I had to take today plus things have been stressful at work this week, I finally just ugly sobbed into my pillow for half an hour. I’m also just panicking because of my grades. I’m trying to maintain high grades because I plan to transfer to UW next year and I’m just worried my GPA’s not going to be high enough by the end of quarter.

Advice Wanted I moved to another country for college and somehow feel lonelier than ever

I’m 18 and moved to another country for college, and honestly, I don’t think I realized how lonely starting over would actually be.
Before I moved, I had this whole picture in my head of what my life was going to look like. I thought moving would be this huge fresh start where everything would finally come together. I’d make new friends, find my people, get a job, have places I liked going to, maybe meet someone, and just generally feel happier.
Instead, I feel like I’m constantly waiting for my actual life to start.
I’ve tried to make friends. I’ve gone to things, I’ve talked to people, and I’ve genuinely tried putting myself out there. The frustrating part is that sometimes I’ll have a really good conversation with someone, and they seem interested in talking to me too, but then… nothing.
They don’t initiate.
And I know friendships take effort from both people, but I’m getting tired of always being the one who has to start the conversation, send the message, or suggest something. At some point, I want to know that someone actually wants to talk to me without me having to be the one who makes it happen every single time.
There’s actually someone in one of my classes who I’d like to get to know better. We talk sometimes, and I’ve had moments where I thought maybe we could become friends. But I don’t know how to get from “we talk in class” to actually being friends. And I overthink everything, so sometimes I’ll leave class thinking, “Why didn’t I say more?”
But at the same time, I don’t want to spend my entire life chasing friendships. I want some effort to come from the other person too.
I’ve also been trying to find a job, and that’s been harder than I expected. I’ve applied and looked around, but finding something that actually works with my schedule and transportation isn’t easy. I don’t have a car, so getting to and from work is something I have to consider with every job.
And transportation has made my social life harder too.
I can’t just decide to go somewhere whenever I want. If I want to go somewhere, I have to figure out public transportation, schedules, how long it’ll take, and how I’m getting back. Sometimes something sounds fun until I realize getting there would be a whole adventure by itself.
Money doesn’t help either.
I don’t have unlimited money to spend going out just to meet people. I can’t constantly get coffee, eat out, go shopping, or pay for activities. Even some free events aren’t really free when you have to figure out transportation to get there.
So sometimes I feel like I’m trying to build a social life while having two giant obstacles sitting in front of me.
I don’t have a car.
I don’t have a lot of extra money.
But I still want friends.
I still want to go places.
I still want to have a life.
And I think that’s what makes it so frustrating.
It’s not that I don’t try.
I actually feel like I’ve been trying pretty hard.
I also love scrolling. Like, I genuinely enjoy it. But lately I’ve been reaching a point where even that isn’t interesting anymore.
I’ll sit there scrolling for an hour or two and eventually think, “Okay… what now?”
Because I don’t actually want to consume more content. I want something to happen in my own life.
I want someone to text me.
I want to make plans.
I want to have somewhere to go on a Friday night.
I want to become a regular somewhere and have people recognize me.
I want to randomly run into someone I know.
I want to have a friend who asks me to hang out instead of always being the person wondering how to meet people.
And I think that’s why this has been getting to me so much.
I made one of the biggest changes a person can make. I moved across the world at 18 because I thought it would give me a better life.
And sometimes I just sit there thinking, “I literally moved all this way and I’m still lonely.”
I know I’m young. I know I have plenty of time. I know friendships don’t magically appear overnight.
But knowing that doesn’t make being lonely right now any less lonely.
I don’t think I need 20 friends. I don’t need to be invited to something every night. I don’t even need my life to be exciting all the time.
I just want a couple of people who genuinely want me around.
I want to feel like I belong somewhere.
I want this place to feel like home instead of somewhere I’m still trying to figure out.
Maybe I’m expecting things to happen too quickly. Maybe starting over just takes longer than I thought. Maybe eventually I’ll look back at this period and realize it was temporary.
I really hope that’s what happens.
For now, though, I’m lonely. And I’m tired of pretending that moving somewhere new automatically means you’re going to have a new life.
Sometimes you move somewhere new and you still have to build that life from scratch.
And honestly, building it from scratch is really fucking hard.

Advice Wanted Should I withdraw or take my chances?

I’m indecisive and need help figuring out what to do. If you were in this position, what would you do?

I have 97% and up in the rest of my 4 classes but an 88% in psychology. I found out after it was too late that this professor is the lowest rated in the school. This prompted me to check other students grades. On the most heavily weighted assignments, which are 6 page essays, the average grade was a 60%, which means most of the people in the class are failing. There are 2 more of these essays left. I know my grade rn is fine, but I’m worried I won’t do as well on the next essay which could result in me failing the entire class bc these essays are weighted so heavily.

My goal is to join the nursing program and I’m worried this will ruin my chances if my grade goes any lower, as this class is one of the prerequisites. I’m worried about my GPA being lowered as the nursing program is very competitive. It’s really messing with my motivation because I feel like I could put forth my best effort and would still never be able to get an A.

The deadline to withdraw is in a few days. Should I take the withdraw on my transcript, or take my chances with finishing this class? If I end up getting a bad grade what are my options? I’m really regretting not researching my teachers prior to enrollment, but I assumed a college would notice something was up with a teacher who had such low ratings and so many students failing

Also, this whole class is open notes, which is exactly the problem. It’s basically just an English class where we recite whatever is written in the textbooks in our own words, but it has to be top notch English. The grading rubric literally says a paper with complete and full understanding of the material is a 90, the only way to get 100 is if you “go above and beyond college level” basically he wants us to be experts and if not, we won’t get an A. I do better when I actually learn information because it’s more engaging that way.

Advice Wanted i feel like i’m only in college now cause i feel like i’d have no stable day job i enjoy without it

i go to school for digital media and have an associates in visual communications. i originally tried to get a graphic design job a couple years ago, but the only ones that didn’t seem horrible all required bachelors degrees and experience in stuff i didn’t learn when i was in community college.

i’m not sure if it’s the classes i’m taking this semester, but i’m really not looking forward to the more advanced classes in this major. it seems as though there’s a shift where professors are making us learn ai stuff and keep telling us how it would look good on our resumes, but i just can’t help but feel annoyed when i hear things like that. i also just don‘t like how long some of these classes are and how you’re required to be in groups that stay on campus after class. i drive 30 miles to get to class and i really don’t wanna move out for this.

i know i could change my major, but i also don’t wanna be in school any longer than i have to. and even if i graduate, i wanna get a job in graphic design, which i constantly hear is a hard job market nowadays. i feel like i’m fucked no matter what i do, so i don’t even know what to do but just keep things moving and not totally burn out, which i feel creeping up on me

Advice Wanted regretting not applying for a BFA program

if anyone has advice i’d appreciate it, but please be constructive/kind. i already feel pretty stupid as is.

im currently a senior, majoring in art with a minor in education. i transferred to this college after completing my associate’s at a cc. i didn’t really know what i wanted to do after graduating high school, which is part of the reason i didn’t go straight to a four year university. i bounced between psychology and art as majors for a while, and eventually settled on my current major and minor. i figured going into art education was a decent plan.

when i transferred i was required to speak to an advisor before scheduling any classes. i had no idea what i was doing, and asked a lot of degree-related questions, like the difference between a BA and BS and what a BFA was. quite frankly, the advisor did a horrible job of explaining my school’s BFA program. he literally said, “well, people don’t really get a BFA in art”, giving me the impression that the degree wasn’t compatible with my major.

later on, near the end of my junior year/my first year at this college i learned what a BFA actually entails (picking a concentration, getting your own studio, developing a body of work, etc) and that you’re supposed to apply for the program your sophomore or junior year. i assumed it was too late for me to look into it and moved on.

at the start of this term i spoke to a classmate i have who is in the program and she told me it’s relatively common for students to extend their degree by a year to apply for/complete a BFA. i was immediately excited and spoke to the BFA advisor, who told me it was possible, but with some caveats. it would be a heavy workload to finish in one year, during which i would have to be working as well. i would need to apply by mid-february, which requires a portfolio (that i’m not sure i have enough recent work to create) and a recommendation from a professor.

after that appointment i kind of gave up again, but its been nagging at me. in one of my studio classes there are quite a few BFA students and they’re always talking about their experiences and it all sounds SO amazing. most of them go on and on about how they always knew this was the degree they wanted to pursue since high school, while i was terrified to even think of the future.

practically, i can see having a BFA being useful in the future if i decide to pursue becoming a professor, which i think is a good possibility. i would also give just about anything to have access to the time and resources to focus on my work and create an exhibition. i just don’t even know if this is something i can or should do at this point. the regret is genuinely plaguing me.

Advice Wanted I took an LOA and I feel my life is over

I started my second semester at the school I transferred to a few weeks ago and I was miserable. my roommate never left the room, other girls were threatening to hurt me (random roommates lol) and my mental health was at the lowest point I think it’s ever been. I didn’t have a lot of friends and my motivation for school was slowly falling even though I love it.

I left so suddenly to return home I left a lot of my belongings at my apartment and some with the few friends I had. the apartment complex is still charging me money because there’s no evidence I was receiving threats, and they won’t even guarantee that my mental state was a factor for leaving. I went home and fell into a bit of a depressive state. I was happy to feel safe but went into a deep depression over leaving.

I don’t even feel like I’m getting better back home I just feel like I failed. I miss school so much, I miss having a routine and going to my favorite classes.

I knew this was going to happen but now I’m graduating a semester later than I thought. I feel like my parents treat me like a basket case and a nuisance now that I’m back. I’ve been estranged by my stepdad after he tried to take the reins on transferring.

how do I know it’s not over? all my friends are going to graduate and start working before me. I fear I’ve failed. I just feel like is going to follow me forever and I’ll never come back from it

I miss school and I miss being me

Advice Wanted I wasted 4 days procrastinating and now I have 2 exams tomorrow. Am I cooked?

😭

Bro, I genuinely need some advice. I have two exams tomorrow, and I've wasted the last four days doing absolutely nothing. Now I have barely a day left to study, and I'm freaking out.

I kept telling myself I'd start studying later, and now I'm regretting it so much. I did pretty well in my UG, but PG feels different, and I'm scared that I'll end up failing both exams.

I know I should stop panicking and start studying, but I can't stop thinking about how much I have left to cover and whether I can actually manage it in such a short time.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation and managed to get through their exams with just one day of preparation? What did you do, and how did it go? I need honest advice, not just reassurance that everything will be fine.

I'm genuinely scared right now. 😭💀
