Question Should I read the manga? (Complete newbie)

I heard it's better than the anime , I never seen anything from the story but from what I gathered

In the anime: ayanokoji is depicted as the version he thinks he acts like In the manga: it's how people see him In the novel : he's a mix of both

I don't read novels so would y'all recommend the manga or the anime , at least for a first experience?

Light Novel Let's ignore what we think will happen to the characters. Do you think there will be some sort of Twist as to what this whole School is about? Spoiler

In Y1 V11, Manabu leaves a hint to Ayanokoji that it doesn't actually matter too much who graduates from Class A, but when Ayanokoji asks Manabu to expand on this, he says it doesn't matter and that he will find out eventually.

I don't think this has ever been touched upon again, but it gives me the impression that the author is going to reveal something about the school at the very end.

And I feel like that's due. Regardless. This school has been hyped up so much, taking place on an island of its own, functioning as its own City with its own currency based on how well the students are performing, and hypes itself up as holding the most elite students ever, with its graduates having 100% employment success.

And yet, I don't really see how these students are growing all that much. Yes, there are some students that are genuinely getting better, like Soudou for example, but that's not really the school's doing. The students aren't really expanding in anything other than social dynamics, and even then, they're not maturing that much more than regular high school students would. And there are still students like Ike and Kushida who are heavily immature, despite being Seniors. And don't forget, Soudou was very close to being expelled twice in the very beginning of this whole series. There was a high chance that he was just going to be expelled and not given the chance to grow at all, and it wasn't like the school was doing that much to stop it.

I'm also just confused though when it comes to this Grade In Particular. It's been pointed out in universe multiple times that there aren't nearly as many expulsions for this grade as there have been for others. And sure, you could blame it on Nagumo being harsh with his grade, or Ayanokoji being protective of his grade, but I don't think you can put it entirely on that. They're flat out. Haven't been that many opportunities for students to get expelled, and even when they do, it's usually just one. Heck, if we were to measure how brutal a special exam was based on how many students get expelled, then the most brutal by far was the Class Poll. Despite only expelling four students, it's expelled the most students out of any special exam in this grade.

I remember before Year 3 started, I I made my own little fan fiction outline on how I wanted it to go, and naturally everyone hated it. Regardless, I still liked it, and part of what I was wondering if we would see is if students would genuinely start getting expelled left and right, to the point that there would only be a few students left in the entire grade by the end and they would have to genuinely work together and use the sacrifices and hints Left behind by the other students to survive.

But that doesn't seem to be the case here. It seems like most of the students are going to make it just fine. Heck, the vast majority of the students in all of the classes we don't even know the names of, And yet they seem to be doing just fine just being background characters.

I don't know, I rambled a bit off topic, but I'm just genuinely curious where this series is going.

Some of my placements could trigger a few people, so I wanna clarify that this is just my opinion. Ur completely free to not agree with me. Also, sakura's placement is based on her illustration from y2v5, when she was leaving, because that's how she actually looks like. This list isn't ranked from best to worst in any category

Discussion Shiraishi’s Perspective on Nishikawa’s Behavior Toward Ayanokōji Spoiler

Post image

From Shiraishi’s perspective, isn’t it incredibly annoying how Nishikawa keeps saying all sorts of things to Ayanokōji?

It seems she’s started calling her “Nishikawa-san” now.

I’m also curious to see how the relationship between Nishikawa and Shiraishi develops from here!

Would it be going too far to say something like:

“If she keeps doing nothing but getting in Ayanokōji’s way, Shiraishi might…” ?

Discussion Does anyone else feel like Ichika's storyline in Y3 is a bit melodramatic? Spoiler

Of course, being threatened by her father with being sold as a potential sex slave is horrible... For an ordinary girl—and Ichika is anything but ordinary, since she’s a WR—which means she’s suffered physical abuse since she was literally a baby; she was trained in combat and social manipulation before she even had any muscle mass—in other words, she’s anything but harmless, as shown by her complete lack of hesitation in physically abusing and harming Kushida and Nagumo. So nothing would stop her from simply killing her “potential” husband if he tried to abuse her, should that ever happen

even the fact that she knows where the WR is physically and all the compromising stuff about her father and Atsumi would make her far too dangerous because then she’d simply have to use everything she knows

Question Is Ayanokoji actually making his classmates stronger, or just making them dependent on him? Spoiler

Post image
21 Upvotes

I've been thinking about this for a while. Ayanokoji has helped a lot of people develop throughout the series, especially Horikita, but I wonder how much they've actually grown on their own.

Horikita is a good example. She's definitely not the same person she was at the start, but Ayanokoji has been guiding her from behind the scenes for a long time. Without him, would she have developed the way she did?

I feel like this applies to other characters too. Ayanokoji puts people in situations where they can grow, but at the same time he's usually the one controlling things in the background. Sometimes it feels like he's helping them become better while also making sure they still need him.

Thats why I'm really curious about what will happen in Y3V5, especially with Ayanokoji being on house arrest. This might be the perfect opportunity to see how much the others have actually learned and whether they can handle things without his help. Of course, we still have to wait and see how things play out, but I think it'll be interesting if the volume explores this.

Discussion (Y3V5) Theory regarding the new exam Spoiler

Given the rules, rewards, and penalties, along with the fact that they isolated Kiyo so that he couldn't participate in the exam; it would serve to develop the dynamics and characters of each class along the plot of the Second Grade, functioning as the regular .5 volume acting as a setup, but since this isn't the case, there might be something more.

Due to the apparent lack of risk of expulsion and the absence of variation in the fluctuation of class points within the same grade, there is no need for cooperation and along with the exhaustion caused by spending a week on the uninhabited island, it would result in that only the diligent students would participate taking it seriously.

Therefore, at the end of the first day, in order to motivate the students, the school will reveal/add a rule penalizing the defeated side: that among the students who have lost twice, one or all of them will be expelled.

Now that the whole plot of the Third Year seems to revolve around Hiyori; she will be one of those eliminated or only just her, triggering a conflict within both sides as they fight and sabotage amongts themselves with some wanting to save her and others wanting her expelled, concluding with Nanase and/or Ichika becoming the martyr:

-Nanase's motives: She wants to provoke a change in Kiyo's ways that could be triggered by Hiyori's presence; she tried to get both Shiraishi and Ichika on her side so her expulsion might shift their stance; Housen might behave more wildly and recklessly without someone by his side; just like Arisu, she could exert influence from the outside should the plot required it.

-Ichika’s Motives: She doesn't have/know the purpose of her life nor does she have a stance regarding the feud between Nanase and Ishigami; is aware that Hiyori could/would be targeted; she meet Kiyo previously this one is thrown in quarantine triggering the trope of the unacknowledged last encounter; the treadmill girl who might also be the one who beat those two first grader could potentially be a wroomer becoming her replace/upgrade.

Light Novel Did the underclassmen choose the WRONG handicap? Spoiler

According to the Y3V5 synopsis, the first- and second-years get to request one handicap, and Ayanokoji ends up being completely banned from the special exam.

I get the logic. If I were an underclassman, I wouldn't want to face Ayanokoji either.

But they only get ONE handicap.

And even without him, the third-years still have Horikita, Ryuen, Ichinose, and plenty of other capable students.

So here's my question:

Was removing Ayanokoji actually their smartest move, or did they focus too much on one person?

If you were leading the underclassmen, what handicap would you have chosen instead?

I'm interested in hearing both sides, especially from anyone who thinks banning Ayanokoji was absolutely the right decision.
