Previously I played Chrono Cross on either PS1 and PS2. The picture quality on the remastered version is a lot better. Since Chrono Cross was actually my cousin's game (since her mom worked over the weekend, she spent Fri-Sun at our house), this was my first real opportunity to play Chrono Cross from the very beginning and not just a New Game+. I decided to put spoilers on both the storylines and the posts that involve strategy just in case.
It took me 8 days and 56 hours of playing time to finish. Since I hadn't played it in so long, I was stuck on a lot of the puzzles and how to get certain places. I wasn't sure how to catch the komodo dragons. I didn't know thatif you had Kid join with you that you couldn't add Leena. I wish I had gotten Leena. I went to the trouble to get Mojo, but I didn't actually use him in any battle.
I chose the Nikki route to Viper Manor because the other routes don't sit right with me for a first attempt. If you take Pierre's route, one of your characters gets killed by Ketchop, and even though they get revived, they're wounded. If you take Guile's route, it's awkward because you have a character with a black innate who goes with you to face a boss with a black innate (referring to King Moaman). At least I get a fair fight if I choose the Nikki path, even though Guile is the strongest character of the three.
I decided to not save Kid because I thought fighting the Hi Ho Tank would put me in a hole, but I didn't realize the Dragoon boss was going to be difficult. He killed Serge and Nikki, and only Glenn was left standing with about 40 HP. I decided to swap out Nikki with Macha after I finish the head-tail-body crap. I forgot to get Docbecause I thought I would get him automatically at some point. I wish I had gotten him, although I don't think he would have helped my party much since I already had a strong white innate character in Serge.
It took me two tries to beat Sun of a Gun. Up to that point, he was the only boss who beat me on my first attempt. I was stunnedthat some attacks that on paper should have been tough on him like gravity blow did next to nothing on him.
I didn't mind using Macha against Bunyip even though Bunyip is a red innate bosssince he turns into a black innate boss. When facing Bunyip, he did kill Macha after his innate turned black, but since I had revive, everyone was standing at the end. In my strategy, I used blue and black elements against him in his first form, and red and white elements in his second form. Viper and Lynx were jokes.
I tried to recruit Funguy but found it too complicated, so I gave up. I got lost on Fargo's ship. I didn't know what to do. I felt lucky to get off of it, so I missed the save Marbule challenge, and I also gave up on the grand slam after I lost the second battle.
I proudly beat Garai on the first try by doppleganging as a Wight Knight and using Radius instead of Harle so that I don't have 3 black innate characters.I don't actually like using Sprigg, and even thoughWight Knight has a black innate, I didn't intend to actually use that creature for the elements, I just wanted the strong physical attacks in the 200's. I decided to use the same strategy against Miguel later on. Miguel beat me on my first try, but I think that was a fluke because Lynx's physical attacks kept missing. At one point, I missed an attack that was at 99%. I didn't change much on my second attempt except bringing diminish one element sooner in my grid. On the second try, I beat Miguel easily. No one died, and Itrapped Holy Light. Total victory.
I beat the Water Dragon on the first try with Lynx, Fargo, and Orcha. Orcha died at some point in the fight, so I did struggle with this one. The Fire Dragon was the hardest dragon boss for me. He kept running my HP low. I ran away twice from the Green Dragon because at one point he made it to where Fargo couldn't use blue elements, and I wasn't going to play that game.
I fought Starky in between the dragon battles hoping I could get some strong white elements from him to use against the Black Dragon. I ran away after my first try because I didn't realize seal all only works against you and not your opponents. That was the worst element I ever used. Burn it with fire. I didn't end up getting any traps successfully done.
I was distraught when I found out that I couldn't fight the Black Dragon. I didn't know that the boss was optional. Every other time I saw it played, the player fought him. I thought I'd be screwed without the black plate. To make up for it, I decided to fight both Dario and the Criosphinx to get the Mastermune and Sunglasses respectively and the second Einlanzer. Itreated Dario like a blue and yellow innate boss to win. I didn't use black or white elements.
The Criosphinx was the hardest boss battle for me. I lost to him on the first try even with a yellow plate because his physical attacks are too strong. On my second try, I allocated Lynx's element grid with cure elements all over the place and relied on physical attacks. I was almost out of elements by the time I won. If his HP was closer to 15,000, I would have lost. I think that was the most boring battle in the game. It took me over 30 minutes. It felt like a never ending cycle.
The Sky Dragon was made easy. I wasted money trying to trap ultranova because she didn't even last long enough to use it.
Now that totally made up for not getting the black plate. Dark Serge was incredibly easy to beat, and Fate wasn't hard either. I trapped FreeFall, and she didn't even complete two countdowns. PolisPolice used a bazooka tech against my one character who had a white plate. Epic fail. I actually beat Gravitor twice, because on one try, he killed one character, but I actually killed Gravitor without reviving the person he killed. I wanted the player to receive a bonus. On the second try, I beat him without anyone coming close to dying.
For the Time Devourer on Terra Tower, I knew I wanted to use Serge and Glenn for X-Strike. I knew Serge and Glenn would do serious damage since they have white, green, and red tech skills. I decided that the last person in the party should be a blue innate person that fights with "glove" since I acquired spectral glove. I had to decide between Marcy and Orhla, and I decided on Marcy based on the magic stats. I made Marcy into a blue, yellow, and black element specialist, Glenn a black, red, and green element specialist, and Serge a white, yellow, and red element specialist. That was easy work.
On the last battle, I used Serge, Kid, and Poshul against Lavos, not for strategic reasons. Lavos kept interrupting my element sequence, but I finally learned how the stamina works. I thought Chrono Cross had to be the last element, but then I placed it in the first column of Serge's grid. So I had to run away a few times because I realized I kept losing the element colors that I needed from overuse.
Glenn was my most valuable accessory character on this attempt. I didn't realize he was that good when I was played 20 years ago.
