Polling Community

I posted a thread about how we want to move people asking for help etc to a dedicated community but I want to see what everyone's thoughts are.

For now I have reverted the rules until we see what peoples thoughts are.

Advice for year-round lights on a historic lodge

Post image
14 Upvotes

I'm the GM for a small non-profit ski hill and we've always had C9 Christmas lights on our lodge and other buildings. These are on all year on timers. They've been cobbled together with various ages and shades of white bulbs and literally stapled to the building. Of course, we're on a shoestring budget after last year's abysmal winter and this year's forecast El Niño.

Looking for advice:

  1. Best brands of more pro-level lights that won't go out if individual bulbs fail. Currently using decent strings that have lasted years in the sun and heat of summer.

  2. Advice on how to mount these without too many additional holes or clips that won't match against the wood (we're limited on what we can do with the historic building so we want minimal impact). Staples were ok but leave the lights looking...uneven and at various angles.

  3. Any way to black out or cap sections that don't need lights? (Notice the string runs from the roofline to the window)

Appreciate the Reddit world's expertise!

Vickerman G30 multicolored ceramic bulbs...

Has anybody used these bulbs? I really like the look of the round bulbs and I'm interested in how these compare to the true tone opaque bulbs?

Who’s making the best, most incandescent-like warm white LED mini lights right now?

We want to use warm white mini-lights on our tree, but we’d like enough light density for a full look, and that can be tricky to power when you get enough incandescent strands going. We’re also wary of the heat from incandescents drying our tree out.

So LEDs seem like the best option. Is anyone making really convincing, warm white mini lights? I feel like so many are dim or have a faint green/blue cast.

Apparently Christmas lights are a family argument now

We somehow got into an argument about christmas lights at dinner last weekend, and it's only october. I've always liked warm white lights. They look nice with the red and gold ornaments we already have, and i love how the living room looks when they're the only lights on. My husband completely disagrees. He grew up with those big red, blue, green and yellow bulbs, and apparently a christmas tree without colored lights is just a regular tree wearing jewelry. Then my mom got involved and reminded us that when i was little, i'd sit under our tree trying to figure out why the blue bulbs made everything around them look purple. I'd completely forgotten about that until she mentioned it.

We've been looking at trees for this year, and i have a warm white costway tree saved that i really like. But now my husband keeps sending me pictures of multicolored ones from the 90s. The funniest part is that our kid has already declared the whole argument pointless because the tree should obviously have both. honestly, that's probably how this is going to end.

Tru Tone ClassiColor

My wife absolutely insists on traditional incandescent bulbs. We do the entire roofline and we end up needing to plug into 4 separate outlets because of the amp draw. We run them 4 hrs a night on weekdays and 6 on weekends. Our electricity bill doubles. I just can’t take it anymore. Are Tru Tones really indistinguishable from traditional incandescents? And I can just reuse my current strings and only replace the bulbs? How many bulbs can you run on a single circuit (20A)?

Okay so this is my first year hanging Christmas Lights, I'm look at the C9 Classic Light Set • Dura-Bulb, but on their website they have no directions on how to hang the lights from your roof line, does the set come with everything I need? I have gutters that run the roofline of where I want to hang the lights, what would I even need to hang the lights from my gutters that point downward and how would I do it? Thank you for help in advance!!

First time hanging lights and need some advice

Not sure if this is the appropriate sub to post this question. I’m looking to hang Christmas lights this year, but all the conventional methods seem to be working against me. My home has a metal roof, my gutters have gutter guards and are aluminum, and I live in Maine so when it snows all that snow is going to avalanche all the clips and lights on the roof and gutters off, but I was wondering if anyone has had this particular problem or knows of a way to work with this. I was thinking of possibly drilling holes to push in some hooks in the vinyl soffit, the soffit clips I see seem to possibly not be a best match for my soffit but I could be wrong. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Anyone able to help with a Falcon Controller? (F16V5)

Hopefully this is okay to ask in here!

I'm trying to get my controller properly configured to run my pixel tape. I'm using SK6812 RGBW tape from BTF, which I know is GRBW order. I've set up my outputs to GRBW, and have tried both WS2811 and APA109 types, but when I run the test mode the Red, Green and Blue Fade tests just run a washed-out multi-color fade. White works fine.

Is the test mode just not going to send the proper signal for GRBW, am I doing something wrong, or do I need to get different pixel tape?

I will be running the lights over E1.31(Art-Net) from a theatrical lighting console, but I don't have access to it to test at the moment and I'd rather feeling confident that things are functioning properly by the time I do.

Thanks!

Permanent Vintage Style Christmas lights

Post image

Does anyone make a permanent Christmas light system that gives off a vintage style glow? I’ve seen Trimlight has a dome style that makes the light wash softer. But I’m looking for more authentic looking options.

Traditional color C9's

It looks like people are really starting to miss that old glow of the traditional multi-color C9s. I feel like we are going to see more nostalgic Christmas displays in the next couple years. I am personally switching to the enchanted forest c9's this year. The tru-tones are a tad pricey for a full switch over. I feel like the reviews have been pretty good on the menards enchanted forest vintage c9 leds.

Permanent Lighting Dealers

Hi Permanent Lighting Installers,

I’m an electrical contractor looking to add Gemstone Lighting to my services. Just looking for advice from present or past authorized dealers that would share their experiences / do’s/dont’s / If this is a good idea altogether as the demand for permanent solutions is on the rise.

Any tips would help! Thanks!

Help tracking down muli-colored incandescent micro lights

I had a multicolored set of these micro lights when I was younger that ran off a couple AA batteries. Can't for the life of me find any evidence of them even existing online. Any help tracking them down or key words to search with?

Wife wants vintage style lights

Can’t find the specific ones she’s describing. Importantly - no blue! They have pink and orange in them and definitely give off a warm vintage vibe. Anyone know what style we may be trying to identify?

Looking for solar Christmas lights

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules posting this. I asked in another Christmas sub and my request was deleted in minutes!

I live in an apartment with my wife and we would love to have some lights out on our covered patio, but there is no outlet to power our lights. I've been reading reviews on solar lights on Amazon that have been pretty underwhelming. If you have any recommendations for warm white Christmas lights that are solar powered, let me know! Even better if it's not on Amazon!

Best c7 or c6 vintage look/feel lights? more affordable than TruTone

I would love to buy TruTone, but they are over my price range. I would like to put either c6 or c7 on my tree. Are there any good alternatives? I remember reading last year that the brand that is great for c9 is not the same brand that is best for the c7.

Absolute Minimum Christmas Lights!

Here’s my pre-season idea of the Absolute Minimum Christmas lights!

Back story;

Someone on another Reddit sub was given a homework project for their EE class.

While I won’t do student’s homework for them, I did put together the answer, just to show it can be done.

Then I realized I have my first Christmas light install for this season. It’s even using LEDs.

What do you think?

Ravenna Christmas Market 2026

Hiii

I just booked tickets for 13th December. Unfortunately couldn’t get evening tickets as they were all sold out. But I got afternoon tickets i.e 14:20 ~ 16:20 but I wanna stay there for evening.. and watch the lightning on the bridge…

But I have no idea on how to travel back after 8pm. Coz I heard shuttle service is strictly based on our ticket and we should be there around our booked slot ( i don’t even know if this is true)

Probably my shuttle drop point is Hinterzarten..

Does anyone has any idea about — Can I stay in the market till 7:30/8pm and witness the lightning tho my ticket is only till 16:30pm ? Will shuttle service drops even for those who couldn’t manage on time? If not can I choose to walk? Any suggestions or recommendations on where to spend that night ( looking for budget friendly dorm stays) just for that night. It would be really helpful and grateful for any tips whoever has visited in past ♥️🫂

Also if anyone planing on same day same place.. we can plan together!!
