Media Our girls (and boy!) eating some cat food as a treat, much to the frustration of the cat!
We gave the girls some cat food as a treat, only for our cat to come right up to the door in confusion as to why they were eating his food! Especially funny as he’s usually too nervous to walk right up to them.

Discussion It's my turn to ask the infamous question...hen or rooster?
I have kind of developed a sort of breed, this is the third chicken with this kind of color pattern and I'm really happy about it. I've had chickens for years but I can't wrap my mind around this guy here. It was born the 4th of July (🦅🇺🇸) and at this point the characteristics of a male and female should be more apparent (the comb is not very prominent), a month ago I was 100% sure it was a hen (which would be great), but now with that tail not so much...any thoughts? I am just overthinking it because I really want it to be a female and would love another opinion.
Thanks

Other Everything I've read says leghorn chickens aren't cuddly, lap chickens and they don't like being handled or held. Lol, ok... This is one of my recently acquired hurricane chickens and she's more friendly than the last chickens we had.

I don't own chickens but your subreddit pops up on my feed a lot and you're all adorable. Maybe this tapestry isn't impressive but I adore it and thought it should be shared lol

Question I have a lethargic rooster but I'm not sure what is he suffering from exactly NSFW Spoiler
galleryhe has been getting slightly sluggish the past week. his head movements are becoming slow compared to his brothers. intstead of being able to move his head almost instantly when he pecks food, he has been moving his head slowly. however, I am not sure what is wrong with him. he was able to eat on his own up until today, where I now have to place a few pieces of feed on my hand for him to eat. I took him to my room to attempt feeding him and I managed to help him eat. I'm not sure what is making him slowly go lethargic. and the only clue that I have left is trying to see if something is wrong with his droppings, so I waited for him, and it just happened to be on my bed. I took a picture and then cleaned up. to me, it looks like he has diarrhea. but I'm not very good at this, it may be something else. and even if it was diarrhea, I don't know what is the course of actions that I should be doing is.
for now I give him a tiny amount of salt for electrolytes, fed him, and let him drink sugar water, but I don't know what to do next. I suspected that his lethargy may be because of bullying. so I brought him back out and placed him next to my other roosters, but all the other roosters avoided him rather than attacked him, with some even running away from him. so it can't be because of bullying. he was in a strong rooster before he became lethargic so they are all wary of him. but what do I do now? do you see anything wrong with the droppings? what should my course of actions be?

Question How often do your chickens get sick?
Our first ever chicks are being delivered next week so I’ve been lurking all the chicken subs. I know that specific subs like these catch a lot of questions just by nature of the sub but it’s kicking my anxiety up that there is just going to be mites and sour crop and egg bound chickens coming out of my eyeballs. How often have you had to deal with sick chickens??

Question The Great Rebellion Without A Cause
For years, my chickens and I, had a good thing going. At dusk, they go into to their coop, which fits more chickens than exist right now(some have passed RIP).
For whatEVER reason the bantam rooster started to sleep outside on the roof of the coop instead. He is in an enclosed area gated off from predators, so it’s fine to let him stay there. However, it’s about to get COLD (already chilly) and I need him inside where it’s warm.
After a week or so of putting him inside after dark…. A second female bantam joins him?!?! They continue this for a week, now three weeks into this, a THIRD chicken have joined the rebellion... my oliveegger!
I’ve done the following:
A) checked for mites, no one has any pests, and no red coop mites or whatever, I’ve done the tape test and have been scoping out the coop at night, nothing.
B) made sure no bullying is happening (my bantam rooster is actually in charge and bullies all the hens, but generous about sharing snacks… if that makes any sense).
C) have a camera aimed at the coop to see if we get visitors. So far nothing, but the camera is a bit old, and could have missed something.
I’m all out of ideas of what it could be. If it’s a rodent then surely it would go for the food and not harass my sleepy chickens?
First pic is the lil man that started this whole thing. Second pic is from tonight, when three chickens decided to stay outside the coop.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please share them. I’m so sick of carrying chickens into the coop late at night, when I’m tired and ready for bed.

Other Broiler chicks
Ordered 30 received 31. So far doing good. We’ve been raising a flock every year for about 12 years. We will expand the brooder in a day or two and they’ll stay in the brooder for 2-3 weeks before going into a mobile chicken tractor on pasture.

Question two roosters — can it work?
i have a flock of 35 chickens, two of which are roosters. my first rooster who is 2-3 years old is a very docile production red, he has never shown aggression towards humans and is a very gentle rooster. he is a very good boy, but definitely a scaredy cat. he doesn’t defend his girls at all, we’ve actually had more predator issues since getting a rooster.
that being said, i ordered 16 hens from meyer hatchery and ended up with a chocolate orpington rooster. he’s about 14 weeks right now, and hasn’t been showing human aggression but flairs his neck feathers at his girls (might just be an age thing, the hens at this age all do this too) and runs with food as opposed to feeding his girls like our other rooster does.
i feel like i have enough hens to keep both, and they are not free range but have about a quarter acre fenced in area that ranges from shaded areas with lots of tree cover, open grass, compost, woods, lots to do to avoid boredom and pecking…but what are the chances that my production red will get bullied by this new rooster? what have been your experiences with having 2 roosters? is it possible for them to both be happy?

Other Meet my new flock of hurricane chickens
Living in the Florida panhandle we just had a hurricane a few days ago. In the midst of the worst of it, I saw these poor girls running panicked through the neighborhood, dodging falling trees and huge limbs, sideways blowing rain etc.
Having a fenced in yard and a nice unused coop, I knew I had to rescue them. My grandson and I were able to safely catch them all and secure them in the coop. A friend in the neighborhood is next door neighbors with the person that owned the chickens. My friend said the neighbor was a horrible pet owner, and she had no coop, no protection, or anything for the girls. They basically ran that part of the neighborhood unchecked. And code enforcement had written her up a few weeks ago due to her shitty care of her animals. The neighbor also said she wasn't going to chase them down to get them back after the storm either. Well guess what, she ain't getting them back. They're safe now, and will be cared for, loved and protected for the rest of their lives.

Question New chicken mom
Hey everyone I’m a new chicken mom! I bought a heat plate to keep the chicks under until they are fully feathered and can go outside. The heat plate is set at 100 degrees but it doesn’t feel hot to me. Is that normal?? I can put my hand on the plate and it not burn me. I’m wondering if I need to get a new heat plate and return this one.
