Career Advice/Clarification Practising CA vs Corporate CA: Who earns more in the long run

Post image
35 Upvotes

I wanted to understand the career growth and earning potential of a practising CA compared to a corporate CA in India.

Suppose both have around 4–5 years of experience after qualifying.

1. Who generally earns more at this stage?

2. Which career path has better long-term earning potential?

3. How difficult is it for a practising CA to build a profitable firm and acquire clients?

4. How far can a corporate CA progress in terms of salary and seniority over 10–15 years?

5. Which path would you recommend to someone who prioritises both financial growth and career opportunities?

I'd especially appreciate responses from CAs who have experience in either field. Please share realistic figures or personal experiences if possible.

Career Advice/Clarification Life is full of regrets

I joined this course after two-year gap from Class 12 & cleared Foundation in the December 2021 attempt, but after giving multiple attempts cleared my inter in jan26.

Now, I’ve completed six months of articleship.

I’m 25, and life feels full of regrets. To work as an article under seniors who are younger than me even my friends are working and doing good in their life. I keep comparing myself to others and just regret everything now.

I haven’t appeared for any SPOM exams yet, nor have I started any classes. There is so much work pressure and barely got time to study just go to office and come then sleep.

Rant An absolute genius in my office

It's not me. Not even close. It's another guy. So we are articles in a mid size ca firm. I joined here three months ago. He joined later than me. I had taken attempts in almost double digits. That's my fault. No doubt. He was the district topper. So a genius and definitely well made for the career that CA is. Also a future ranker in Finals, I'm sure.

I absolutely admire the way he thinks. But there's a problem. He cuts me mid sentence.

I know he knows more than me. He has more retention power and learning skills touch wood. But why he keeps explaining everything to me lol. I'm not a poor baby. Helpless child. I can google if I don't know, ask ChatGPT to explain this.

Yesterday my colleague and I were discussing about the client we were assigned to to the manager. And he was listening, like we all do. He wasn't assigned the client. He doesn't know what the client does.

Whenever I ask my doubts to the manager, he'd try to answer on manager's behalf. Okay. When I took for example a word, "due diligence" he asked me, "do you know what due diligence is?" While we were talking to the manager. Okay. He knows more than me. But why he keeps giving me knowledge when I did not ask him? And he explained to me like a teacher what due diligence is. It's extremely patronizing. With all due respect to him. I did know what due diligence is.

When we would be discussing with the manager he'd chip in his comments which, are not 100% correct cause he doesn't know the client at all. But it's okay still. But feeding me the basics without him having any proof that I didn't know this is... Idk.

I was previously assigned a client with him. And yes, it was not a pleasant experience to work with him. He kept explaining, like a teacher, stuff which, I did not ask him. And when I was stuck at someyhing I've asked him his thinking process and he has explained to me like a teacher, and I have always been thankful for his inputs. It's the unsolicited knowledge shoving that I don't appreciate. It's making me feel like we are not equal and I'll always be below him.

And when once I tried to suggest him something, he said, "Itna toh mene bhi dekha hai. I know this already." And make me feel guilty for trying to pitch in suggestions.

My manager is extremely nice to me no doubt. But there's a constant pressure to always be in his good books. To not upset him. These experiences make me feel like I'm not worthy to be there. I'm always learning. Reading new concepts when I don't have anything to do. But I still can't compete with his skills I admit. But do I have to feel dumb af all the time? (Which to a level I might be). I'm rethinking my career choices now.

Career Advice/Clarification Need advice as afraid science std from this community 🥺

I am a CA foundation student from science background (got 69% in both 10th and 12th). I genuinely feel like that the course is okay 👍 This is achievable.

Later I came across a post which was about students misjudging ca course hardness with ca foundation.

I had a goal of becoming ca with rank and doing articles from big 4 (since everyone said around me that there they will torture articles less than mid or small firms)

I truly wish to pass ca with 1 attempt could anyone suggest what I can do

I am afraid of this guys 👇

https://www.reddit.com/r/icai/s/Nno93yH8Mf

My mind goes like this "YOU CAN PASS FND AND THEN THERE ARE TOPPERS WHO PUT MORE EFFORTS AND TIME WITH POTENTIAL, HOW CAN YOU GET RANK ? "

Edit: I can study well and I love to but dk y I don't. That's y I got 70%

Career Advice/Clarification What are your honest takes on the massive shift towards Global Practice roles for CAs??

Is it just me, or has the CA profession completely changed?

I qualified recently in Jan 26 and joined a global Big4, though I have resigned now and am moving to industry next month. The thing is, I am seeing a lot of Global Big4 vacancies in such huge quantities, which was completely unheard of even 2 or 3 years ago. They literally just need a CA, and I see so many people joining them too.

But from what I have heard, the package gets stagnant after a point of time, like once you become a Manager or Sr. Manager. Exit from there is difficult. I do understand that exit opportunities are there in industry like GCCs or other global practices, but even that's not as comparable to Indian practice, or not as easy, with only a few people actually able to make it. Plus, the package at the managerial level in these global firms is not that great compared to what old CAs used to make either in industry at top position or in Indian CA firms or Big4s as Partners or in their own practice.

It makes me seriously wonder whether newer CAs opting for Global practice will ever be able to reach that massive earning potential which older CAs reached back when Global Big4s didn't even exist??

But then, when I see such a huge quantity of CAs joining these Global Big4s, I feel maybe we have just made peace with the fact that younger CAs can't earn that much anymore. Maybe Global Big4s are the need of the hour because at least they are employing people, I mean where would this huge quantity of newer CAs even get absorbed if these Global Big4s were not there??

In a way, Global Big4s have at least stabilized the market, otherwise packages would have drastically reduced across the board. Mid-size firms just don't wanna pay at all. And Indian Big4s, although they pay well and provide good hikes and growth, have become increasingly toxic. Such was not the scene even 10 years back, but now it is literally a do-or-die situation in them. Now you either put in 15 hrs a day or put down papers.

Plus, it's not just the Big4s anymore. I am seeing a lot of other firms also opening up and providing Global Practice opportunities, like RSM, Crowe, etc.

I really want to understand this perspective. As a CA, what are your takes on this, and how do you see the profession evolving?? Would love to hear perspectives from all the CAs out here.

Edit : Also, we need to talk about the actual nature of the work. Most of the work in global Big4s is outsourced from onshore. It is generally less judgmental, less risky, and involves more repetitive tasks. Although that is slowly changing now, it is still nowhere near comparable to the exposure you get in Indian practice.

So, I see two highly contradictory things playing out here at the same time: on one hand, global practices are expanding massively in India and hiring CAs in huge bulk. On the other hand, the usage of AI is increasing rapidly, where all these repetitive and lower-level tasks can be easily automated, meaning that work might not even be required in the near future. How exactly are these two opposite trends going to play out, and how do you see this affecting our job security and growth?

What are your takes on this, especially regarding the AI vs. Bulk Hiring contradiction, and how do you see the profession evolving? Kindly put your perspective.

Final Doubt Looking for Dummy Articleship due to toxic work environment.

Can anyone recommend how can I get a dummy articleship in Pune.

I have only a few months left for my articleship to end and due to family and health issues, I wont be able to dedicate time to a normal 9-5 articleship let alone an articleship in a toxic big 4 environment.

Dont get me wrong, I have learnt a lot and have learnt a lot and my collegues with better managers and a good team have no such issues but I think its all just in my case. I cant even complain to HR or to the partners since my manager already has a bad reputation and they have done nothing against the 5-6 complaints and 3-4 resignations which he has caused so far.

Career Advice/Clarification Should I join a regular university or focus on CA? Really confused.

• Upvotes

I completed my 12th in 2025 and took a drop year. This year, I took admission in a local college and started preparing for CA Foundation (January 2027 attempt).

Recently, I went to a university event with a friend, and honestly, I had a great time. Everyone was so friendly, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. It made me realise that I want to experience college life too.

Now I'm confused about what to do next year. If I clear Foundation, should I join a regular university while continuing CA, or should I stick to my local college and focus entirely on.

So I'm worried about managing both. Also, I'm already 20, and most of my friends are in their second year. If I join next year, I'll have to start from the first year.

I don't want to make a decision based on FOMO, but I also don't want to miss out on the college experience.

What would you do in my situation?

Especially if you're pursuing CA alongside a regular college, I'd love to hear how manageable it actually is.
