I need some balancing opinions so far I think it looks pretty good I got rid of 2 wheat tiles in order to make the best resource rarer but this might be a miss.

Why isn't my red city working as a 3:1 dock? Is there only one spot that works here?

Sharing is caring (C/K)

Being deserted is never fun, but when you lose your level 3 knight, it even extra less fun. In our situation, I only had two lv 3 knights (thanks Smith) and got deserted. The person who deserted me couldn't build level 3 Knights. My interpretation of the deserter card is they place a knight of the same level, and the coin (our rock [ore]) progression only allows you to build it, not have it. Am I right, they get a level 3 knight even though they can't build it?

Mo Money Mo Problems (C/K)

I was really impressed with the response to my previous ask, so here's another that caused a ruckus. It doesn't happen often, but more than once, we've had someone get two metropolis while only having one city. The question became where does the extra arches go, and what happens if another player ties the double dude and has a city they could put it on?

Catan themed birthday party

Hey all! Does anyone have ideas for a Catan themed birthday party for my spouse turning 30? The main theme is "settling into your 30s" or some phrase like that.

Going to have a themed cake and cookies. A big banner that says the above and we're going to play Catan for the first few hours (like 5 games of 4-6 people). But other than that I've just started brainstorming.

Does anyone here have any cool ideas that I can get creative with in a few weeks time?

Favorite expansion combo?

What is your favorite expansion combination? Ours, at the moment, is Cities & Knights combined with Seafarers and the Fish scenario from Traders & Barbarians. It’s a lot of fun—especially when you win 😉 (the red player won this game!).

We’re currently playing to 15 victory points, with a house rule that each player can only earn the 2 victory points for discovering a new island once per game.

My Catan companion app has been out for 3 years and has grown a lot, but hardly anyone knows it. Honest feedback wanted.

Hey everyone,

three years ago I released SettlerStats, an unofficial iOS companion app for Catan. It started as a simple dice roller with statistics for my own game nights and has grown a lot since. The core is still free.

Two things you should know: Reddit has been my only marketing channel so far, so my reach is limited. And I deliberately built no ads and no tracking into the app, because I can’t stand them myself. The flip side is that I have no idea how many people actually use it, so I have to ask you directly.

I also know this is a niche of a niche: Catan players who want a companion app to track their games, and then only a fraction of those own GoDice™ Bluetooth dice. That’s fine, and the app works perfectly well with virtual dice too (just tap the screen). I’m genuinely curious how big that niche really is.

My Questions:

  1. Had you ever heard of SettlerStats before this post?
  2. Which screenshot would make you tap “Get”, and which is confusing?
  3. Where would you normally discover an app like this? (App Store search, BoardGameGeek, YouTube, friends, Reddit, something else?)
  4. Do you use any app at the table (dice, stats, scoring)? Which one, and why?
  5. If you’ve tried SettlerStats: what’s missing or annoying?
  6. If you haven’t: what would stop you? (No iOS? Don’t care about stats? No phone at the table?)

What it does today:

🎲 Real GoDice™ Bluetooth dice (the app detects your physical roll) or virtual dice
🔊 Resource sounds: hear the wood being sawed, sheep bleating, barbarians attacking, robber stealing
📊 Live stats: dice distribution, event die, resource production per hex, victory points, game progress graph
🌦️ Fairness rating: every game gets a weather forecast for your dice luck, from sunny skies to a tornado
📉 Resource drought tracker: who went longest without producing brick?
🏆 Hall of Fame for all your past games (one-time unlock, no subscription)
⚡ Ready in 30 seconds, Base Edition + Cities & Knights, up to 6 players

This is how it is promoted in the AppStore :

Brutally honest answers welcome, including “I don’t need this”. I’m a solo designer/dev, so feel free to reach me directly (DM me here). Thanks a lot for your time.

Day 3 of Still Being Stuck In The Same Game

Cannot load the game stuck in the same lobby, made a post yesterday, still has not been fixed. Payed for this game about to reverse charge them.

Who wins? (For the 10000th time)

Possibly relevant information: Dice rolls were pretty normal. Resource income was quite similar between all four players, three of them were tied at 78.

Custom Scenario Update #2

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello everyone, since it was requested I'm updating how the custom scenario went. We played 2:30hs with 5 players, though two didn't have experience with some common modules (such as cities & knights) and that made the game itself slower than it would be. Even then, I think it's fitting to break out the review by modules and then add my conclussions about the map itself.

  • Civs of Catan: while the power on a 7 was greatly appreciated (although this game we had very few 7s), the variety on costs wasn't very valued. It not only made harder to anticipate other player's need, but also was confusing for some players who sometimes forgot to check their building aids. As a sidenote, vikings turned out to be a neat addition, even though their player got a 7 pretty late on the game.
  • Fish and gold coins were good. In fact, one player mostly got those two instead of normal resources, so their presence guaranteed he could still move ahead despite terrible dice luck. It was hillarious that the only jew at the table was the one getting the most gold coins and something that was noted by all players.
  • Oil springs was ok, though mainly because of its location it wasn't accesible to all players to test it out. It didn't have the eco tracker, but helped simplifying the metropolis from C&K into an improved version of the cities.
  • Volcanos weren't attractive enough since oil spings and gold fields were on the map. Probably should be either balanced around them or available on the main island from the beggining.
  • Shipwrecks were a neat addition, gave about 6 tokens during all game so they could use an improvement in numbers like a lake hex (with 2, 3, 11 and 12).
  • Extra victory cards and trade companies didn't get to shine since there was already too much new things for players, but it was agreed those were nice modules to add on later games.

As for the map review, the conlussions are as followed:

  • The map was too big, in every aspect. The main island being that massive both allowed players to get hands on some resources but also wasted most of the ports and resources to the left since the map encourages players to go right. A more balanced setting would be two smaller main lands to the left and right, and a smaller island with some asilated hexes in the middle.
  • As previosly mentioned, volcanoes should be on the main island to give some early access availability to gold with an extra risk linked. I also like the idea of giving them high production numbers like 6 or 8 to better incentivize it.
  • If using a similar disposition, swap the free gold fields from the uncharted islands with the pirate lairs on the way there. those 4 lone hexes despite being gold fields were utterly ignored since players zeroed in on oil springs and how to reach them as fast as possible.
  • The pirate boat going around wasn't very detrimental, and people most of the time forgot to move it around each time they rolled a dice. Maybe buffing it would trully make it a meanace.
  • Shipwrecks, while nice, are positioned in a way thay you'd cross them anyway most of the time. If its an intended effect it's a good thing, but if not you're just buffing a normal route players would take instead of making players actually deviate to get some treassures.
  • I have mentioned the map is big, but another note is that it takes ages to get to the secondary islands. The route along is generally 10+ ships and roads, so it prolongs the game unecessarily.

All in all, the game faced two main problems: a map too big with resources too scattered for players to actually reach what they wanted, and too many things at play with no clear thematic/objective at play. Yes, I wanted to test many modules simultaneously, but it'd have been better to plan around 3/4 scenarios with less modules but a more focused point for each.

It says a lot that if you deleted the two secondary islands the game would still be playable and maybe even shorter since players could focus solenly on the extra islands and exploiting fully the main island.

An update to my post last week regarding Explorers and Pirates with Traders and Barbarians

Post image
10 Upvotes

This is what we ended up playing. I decided to add another one frame piece to maintain the explorer and pirates island so it does not have to be reduce at all.

We use 25 victory points just for traders and barbarians scenario with explorers and pirates. At first we plan to use 25 for the t&b, e&p, c&k. But ended up not using the c&k for our first game with this.

I ended up winning the game but it was close throughout, the last round was at 22, 22, and 21 (3 players) I ended up winning due to taking the extra 1 token from pirate lair which I took from my friend. The last score was 25, 23, 22. Throughout the game it was neck and neck, we had basically the same point most of the game.

The breakdown points from the game is for me, 10 points scored from settlements, cities and harbors. 5 points from commodities delivered, 10 points from explorer and pirates. We played this for around 3 hours and a half. I think for t&b plus e&p ideal would be 20 vp (17 from e&p + 3 from t&b)

The tricky part is which numbers token to use for the resources and how to arrange them. We ended up just placing it randomly but to make sure that 3 of 6s and 8s are in the coast hex to the right. And for the extra number token needed we picked 5 and 9 I think.

I think it was fun and we had to think where we want to allocate our resources, whether upgrading wagons, creating more ships, crews, roads etc. I like this better since brick is useful for roads and not just an afterthought in e&p.

Looking for people to live chat with while playing online

Hi, I am a level 25 in Catan Universe, and I love playing with strangers, but I’m looking for groups or people to live chat while playing the game to enhance the experience! I am 26 F in the East Coast time zone. Does anyone know of any active discord or groups that like to play regularly?

Jumping Knights, Cities and Knights

We play a lot of Catan, a lot, so some of our situations you may never have encountered, but, here goes. In ending a game, I recently moved my Knights, one to displace a knight that had been moved there previously to break my Longest Road (mine a level 2 to move a 1), and another at the end of my road to break another players longest road (mine a 3 to move a 1). The point was raised can a knight jump another knight along your road, and does the status of the knight being jumped make a difference?

My position would be that a knight can jump another knight along your road, regardless of status, and can be played each individually as a knight can be played independent of each other.

The rules aren't specific about Knights jumping Knights. Kosher?

Catan bots

Hi all, i was interested in knowing what bots exist and how good they actually are. I built a bot myself (because I have no life) that beats all the bots in colonist pretty easily and wins against the bots in Catanatron >80% of the time.

Just wanted to know if there are any good bots out there that I could test it against. Otherwise, I will have to resort to testing it against real people.

for context, I am not a particularly good Catan player, nor have I been playing for years. I only started recently and thought it'd be cool to build a bot.
